{STYLE-WISE} The Secret Society Style of Tom Buchanan

Indeed there are many sinfully stylish idols to worship throughout “The Great Gatsby”; like masculine and cool Jordan, soft and feminine Daisy, even the bookish narrator Nick. And then of course there’s the poster boy himself, Jay Gatsby ,who shall always remain in the fore realm of our memory as a hero to determination and an eternal icon of excess.

But, one that is often overlooked has to be Tom Buchanan; the brutish and masculine husband of Daisy.

This powerful Yale alum is as much the style savant as any of the other devilish dandies that parade themselves throughout the story. This time around, however, Tom Buchanan is as much the idol of style as anyone of his other stylish co-sars.

For instance, actor Joel Edgerton, who plays Tom Buchanan mentions “There’s a Skull and Bones insignia sewn into it that may not even be visible,” to Empire Magazine, adding a unique twist to the characterization of the East Egg Prepster.

After all, Tom Buchanan is of the upper crust of society, and a recent graduate of Yale University, so why wouldn’t he be a member of the elusive Skull and Bones from which Presidents, Astronauts, and Great Leaders in society are born? Allegedly.

I thought it interesting that several years ago a human skull that had been carved into a ballot box was put up to bid at Christie’s (and later pulled under controversial circumstances), and more and more, this particular secret society (No. 322) is coming to the forefront of our own culture; it’s the perfect play on history and style that make for a refreshing take on such a popular story. The bold reinvention is most definitely in their favour.
