Commercial Break: Hiroshi Teshigahara’s “Woman in the Dunes” Trailer

If you’re looking for horror, sex, and a little intrigue look no further than this incredible cult classic from 1964: Hiroshi Teshigahara’s “Woman in the Dunes”. This art house film that could would garner Teshigahara an Academy Award nomination for Best Director in 1967 (he was beat by Robert Wise for “The Sound of Music”).

It’s a strange story, one first told by Japanese author Kôbô Abe (who also wrote the film’s screenplay) in the hugely successful novel by the same name. This is 1960s cinema at its finest and absolutely darkest. It’s also the kind of film that you wish was made now; a film that is provocative, lingering, sexy, intellectual, and above-all screams style!

So if you enjoy films with a core, and our thirst for the strange you’ll definitely appreciate this one.  There’s little blood, and definitely no ghosts, but there’s definitely something creepy that lurks with you long after the movie has ended. Trust us on this one and grab a copy from Amazon today!

“The most frightening thing in the world is to discover the abnormal in that which is closest to us.”

+KNIGHTS OF THE SANDCASTLE +

There once was a mysterious band of knights who roamed and raved their days and nights along the banks of the cool dark waters. Young and wild, they howled at the moon like the wolves, and on the clear days when the sun seemed to sparkle like diamonds on their faces, they stood sullen like statues of antiquity before cawing and cooing outrageously to their peers.

They sat watching the crowd waves roar; the boardwalk full of walking visitors, strange and new from far away places, that would all turn away in disdain from the boys of summer, sensing somehow their mighty position above it all . . .

knights of the sandcastle 4

knights of the sand castle 3

They weren’t there for the sights and sounds, instead vying for an order of things far from the distressing quarrels of everyday society.

Simple positions shared amongst them all. One assigned to watch, another to distribute, another to discover, and the rest to play by the rules. No one over stepped a turn at the bottle, for each one knew that their last could be any day.  Neville, one of the leaders, would say, ‘Never shy from your true colours’ and these they would display with unbroken pride.

knights of the sandcastle 2

knights of the sandcastle 6

Your honour was earned by the friendships you garnered and gathered.

Some say they had magic on their sides; magic powers taken from the ages, used to ensure their place along the sand dunes. Others say they made friends easily, but were actually ghosts playing games on the common folk.

Only one place in the world for them. A sacred fellowship that haunts us all to this day . . .

I like to imagine seeing them there every time I go back to the seaside. Guarding their little corner of the Earth, and protecting the small sliver of paradise they managed to claim as their own.

knights of the sandcastle 5

Sometimes I can hear them sing their favourite tune; a memory that wavers from faded dream to brilliant exuberance.

It was a familiar one made their own by one of their musically gifted initiates –

“Going down to Stoney End.

I never wanted to go down to Stoney End.

Momma let me start all over!

Cradle me Momma!

Cradle me Again . . . “

The Eye of Faith RULES!!!

‘Concision in Style, Precision in Thought, Decision in Life”

You may have noticed those immortal words when browsing through our ABOUT US page, although the phrase is more like this:

+ CONCISIONEM STYLO, ACCURATIUS CORDE, IUDICARI VITA +

Since our inception, these words have helped build the foundations for creating The Eye of Faith, and we never forgot them along the way.

Patrick Bateman Loves Les Mis

Wise words from an icon in his own right,  Victor Hugo (and I’m not too sure if he would be one for musicals ) . . . but none the less, his “concision in style, precision in thought, and decision in life”, have made him and his work relevant to this very day!

It’s quite wild how the past comes and goes, and is brought back to life again. Inspiration finds it’s way through the cracks of your mind to infiltrate your thoughts and create something special. This comes into play every time you make your way into your own wardrobe, for example. You stare at your clothes and an idea might come to your mind, and thus a new look, and a new you is born!

The Eye of Faith Boys

While our motto  CONCISIONEM STYLO, ACCURATIUS CORDE, IUDICARI VITA (it just sounds so F***ing good in Latin) has carried us far the past year, most mysterious 2014, we have a few new thoughts for the year ahead, and some new virtues we want to inherit and inspire for 2015.

+KNOWLEDGE+

The chemical preparation of Aurum Portabile (Sadeler II, Kilian, Geiger)

+KNOWLEDGE+ has always been an important piece of the puzzle here at The Eye, and for our frequent followers and visitors, you have come to expect in our approach an appreciation for history and all it’s secrets and quirks. We love to expose the {PAST} and examine where it fits into the {PRESENT} and hopefully, using our age defying wisdom, we can summarize a likely {FUTURE}.

Much like the alchemists and sorcerers of the past, the gaining and collecting of knowledge, every little bit no matter how esoteric, is a vital aspect of one’s true power, for when the time comes and all you are left to is you and you alone, you can count on yourself to follow through! Whether we’re talking life or fashion, no one is ever going to blame you for knowing too much.

We hope to continue in this vein, and bring you more and more vintage memories and musings that can both inspire and inform.

+INTEGRITY+

Blame it on the Gang (from THE EYE OF FAITH rules)

Since we began creating The Eye of Faith, we have been told a million and one things we should be doing instead. Everyone and their mother has had an opinion on our vision, without even asking what that vision may be!

We came into this game knowing full well who we were, and what we intended to accomplish. You don’t see another site quite like The Eye of Faith online, and that is a good thing. We are not trying to fall into place behind other fashion blogs (most of which look the same) who recycle content from site to site, but we wanted to be true innovators on the scene. This dedication to our vision, and always standing by it without changing it to appease naysayers is why we have ruled +INTEGRITY+ as a continuing priority here at The Eye of Faith.

The Eye of Faith was conceived as a portal to the past with many seemingly disparate items, articles, and stories coming together to create a well-rounded vision of how little things have changed, and how cool the past really was! This will continue NOT to change.

We will also not be picking any random articles of vintage clothing to add to the collection. Nothing is arbitrary, and each piece speaks to a certain story or style we are aiming to incorporate into the vision of the collection as a whole. Believe us, it’s not as easy as it sounds! It’s called +INTEGRITY+

+COURAGE+

The Spirit of Contemplation (1901) by Albert Toft {1862 - 1949}
The Spirit of Contemplation (1901) by Albert Toft {1862 – 1949}

+COURAGE+ has always been our silent leader when it came to creating The Eye of Faith. In fact, the whole idea of the The Eye of Faith encapsulates this virtue entirely.

The Eye of Faith is an age old symbol of +COURAGE+, and by the pure belief in matters at hand, and some proper insight, one may be given sight to see the way to get to one’s destiny. It’s a silent pathway, but a strong one, and without proper reinforcement your trail could just wither into the wind before your eyes and you would be left to find your way without the guidance of the fates. . .

The latter is a path many of choose in life, but since we are beings with a choice, we definitely chose to trust that The Eye of Faith will get us where we belong.

It took a lot of +COURAGE+ to stand up and tell those we know and love our belief in it, but it definitely seems to be paying off, with everyday us getting stronger and stronger.

+STRENGTH+

Have Strength Poor Child

+STRENGTH+ comes in many forms. We need it constantly; in the physical sense, to keep up the hustle of getting our pieces from one place to another, and even more so in the emotional and spiritual sense, when it seems like you’ll never figure it all out.

Truth is, you’re never going to figure it all out, so best stop wasting your energy on that one . . .

Having +STRENGTH+ of mind is more powerful than any fist when it comes to life. Creeping deep down into oneself and building +STRENGTH+ from within is your best start. From there, everything else will seem like a cinch!

+IMAGINATION+

Imagination Psychedellia

I once read somewhere that +IMAGINATION+ is more important than +KNOWLEDGE+

But I don’t think that is quite true, as much as learning to utilize both to one’s advantage can be the most powerful tool of all.

+IMAGINATION+ is quite literally the God-Sense in all of us. If you seek the divine in the everyday all you need do is open a pad of paper and sketch, or write for an hour about any old thing, even messing about your wardrobe will suffice. It is simply that beautiful magical moment where your brain has decided to create something new, and completely you.

You are a well of ideas and inspirations, and once you are able to tap into that spring, you might find your true self overflowing!

+ + +

So there you have it!

Our five newly anointed principles that can be used not just for your style sensibilities, but use them in life, as well. If you use them right, the transformations will happen almost immediately.

Feel free to adapt our Rules to fit your own life, or simply come up with a few of your own.

What means most to you? In the end, that’s all that matters. We know what we need to do to survive, and we’re going to definitely be making it happen! So hopefully some of our words of wisdom have rubbed off a bit, and we can all make things happen together!

{Style-Wise} This Very Moment . . . Vintage Style Inspiration for Spring 2015

badlands-style wise-the eye of faith- vintage- title 1974

This very moment we couldn’t be more blessed.

Many props go to our many friends, fans, and followers who have helped get us this far – and many more to those who we have yet to meet who will take us even farther along the path our destiny has chosen for us.

Life is nothing but a series of moments that pass before us. In a blink, they are gone. A whisper in the wind. A forgotten melody that drums in our memory.

Take these moments and package them tight, for you never know when you might need them.

This very wise {Style-Wise} is dedicated to that. After all, style is not as cut and dry as people like to make it out to be. It goes far beyond the clothes we wear, and trickles deep down into our centre where the components of who we truly are stay in constant motion.

Here’s a little inspiration mixed with some simple philosophical points courtesy of the brilliant words of one, Mr. Terrence Malick, who seems to have some magical grasp on words, sound, and image, in a method that transcends the idea of style to whole other level that never ceases to enchant the mind and soul.

Check out this scene from his first feature ‘Badlands’ (1974) starring Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen as star-cross’d lovers on a crime spree across America in the 1950s.

Starkweather was promptly sentenced to death by electric chair and died June 25, 1959 after a mass crime spree across the plains. Caril Ann Fugate maintained her innocence, and was sentenced to life in prison for a charge of first degree murder. However, after 17 years as a model inmate she was released on parole in June 1976.

Caril Ann Fugate lived a rather normal life hereafter, with many people siding with her innocence. Last summer she was involved in a car accident that left her husband dead, and herself in critical condition at the age of 70. There is no news since whether or not she survived her injuries.

“Since this has happened, there’s not a day in my life that has gone by that I haven’t thought about it,” she said of the killings. “There’s times when I think about my family and when I think about them, it’s always what happened. It’s always how they died.”

{STYLE WISE} What Men Want To Buy: Rad Sweaters from 1930s Catalogs!

1930s catalogue- what men want to buy- the eye of faith vintage

What men want to buy . . .

I guess not much has changed. Like you all, I’ve been out and about searching for Xmas treasures, and I swear I saw every single one of these pieces in almost every {Present} day retail store out there! It’s really amazing.

tommy-hilfiger-fall-winter-2012-campaign1Tommy_Hilfiger_FW_2012_Ad_Campaign_1tommy-hilfiger-aw-2012-advertising-campaign-5

Tommy Hilfiger Ad Campaign 2012-13; 1930s styles relived for the ages. . .

One big difference you’ll find, however (other than the incredibly low prices of the 1930s), is the quality of these garments would be resoundingly higher than the versions you can find in stores today. That’s why I try mostly to stick to vintage on a budget, because chances are if it’s lasted all this time in great condition, it’s gonna keep delivering year after year as it has since its inception. So when it comes to sweaters go big (price-wise) or go vintage.

Ads from the 1930s are beautiful, and I just picked out a few stand-out moments that display the vivid vibrancy of the clothes you could find of this time. Would love to see a bit ore of that come back . . . but, it always does!

You just gotta hang in there.

1933

This is a tear from a German catalog dating to 1933. I’m loving the layout they’ve got going on – c’est moderne. But, I also love how the sweaters are styled. As you can see…texture is key. Not to mention, striped cardigans are still the rage!

Check out those bold colours, and I love the pop of green in the tie. Wish you could find more sweaters with a more generous opening at the collar to display shirts as finely as Jacques does. It’s formal, but relaxed. I like this outfit quite a bit.

1930s sweater vest -german catalogue photo- the eye of faith menswear

Again, the colours of this piece are spectacular. Set against the ivory knit, all those colours almost become neutral and could virtually be worn with anything. Love the pattern of the graphics, and the intricacy of it all. Sporting a dapper watch never hurts, either. I think guys don’t sport cool sweater vest enough these days . . . so why not get inspired?

1930s mens catalogue cover- sweater- the eye of faith vintage

This guy is cool. His sweater is even cooler. This one is all about texture, not to mention details. Check out those buttons at the collar – how amazing is that?! Paired with a polka-dot tie, it goes to show that classic looks don’t need to be dull to pack a sophisticated punch. In fact, it takes a bit of panache to take it to the next level.

Now lets put our {STYLE WISE}-ness to work. This is from our {SHOP}:

il_570xN.485020080_a2dq

We’ll take the spirit of these gems and imbue them into this piece which is a vibrant reclaimed vintage sweater from the 1960s by heritage brand LONDON FOG. It really packs that punch we were talking about using colour, pattern, and texture for a refined and sophisticated garment that doesn’t shy on making a statement.

It’s all about playing your cards right in life, and the one mistake you could make is playing it safe, because you’ll just have another hundred people one-upping you from the spotlight you deserve.

Classic doesn’t mean boring. It means timeless. Just as we have shown “What Men Want to Buy” in the 1930s is pretty much the same stuff you can find now. We can take the same spirit of our inspiration of 1930s sweaters and find them in great pieces like this great LONDON FOG sweater from our {SHOP}.

If you’re {STYLE-WISE} like that, you can also save a pretty penny by investing in clothes that will stand the test of time (and your washing machine, for that matter).

Commercial Break: Seventies Style Orgy – “Baba Yaga” (1973)

Baba Yaga 1973- The Eye Wonders Baba Yaga 1973- shot through the heart and youre too late - vintage fashion film inspiration Baba Yaga 1973- illustrated title

Perhaps its the fashion photographer protagonist . . . or maybe the sexy 1970s set decor; most definitely attribute the funky score by Piero Umiliani (you know him – “Mah Nà Mah Nà”), as well as the brilliant presence of film legend, Carroll Baker (“The Watcher in the Woods“, “Babydoll“), and those quirky illustrations that appear, throughout the film – “Baba Yaga” is a bit of a shit show, but a wonderfully unique and stylish one, at that.

I thought Daily Grindhouse summed it up best:

Carroll Baker (BABY DOLL, THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS) is the titular stranger who is all sexed up with hunger for some female flesh. Baba Yaga sets her sights on fashion photographer Valentina Rosselli (Isabelle De Funes) after a chance encounter and soon pays a visit to her humble abode to deliver a doll dressed in some S&M gear for “protection”. After the visit, Valentina’s life is turned upside down; she is suddenly surrounded by death, hallucinations, Nazis (?), and more naked women than a Las Vegas casino. Of the four I prefer the naked women… just sayin’.

It’s these bizarre, unusual, and unexpected (perhaps, even absurd) elements that make a cult classic like this one to remember! You can totally read this film (even just the trailer) for clues on seventies style, and how timeless one can really make it. Love the stripes, the furs, the bobs, the rings . . . love it all! Even the menswear is pretty sublime.

Did I mention there’s witches? You probably gathered, by now. After all – “Baba Yaga” literally translates to Devil Witch! So, sit back and enjoy the sumptuous feast of the best vintage, stylish, erotic, exploitation, sleaze in three and half minutes you’re bound to find on the internet!

How to Cook a Unicorn!

EOF- How to cook a Unicorn

“Taketh one unicorne . . .”

Talk about secret knowledge! It seems scholars are absolutely ecstatic to find a long lost Medieval cookbook that includes recipes and instructions for cooking Unicorns!

The book was uncovered by The British Library, and contains hundreds of recipes for classical Medieval dishes that include herring, tripe, fish stews, and pigeon, as well as a delicious recipe for black bird pie – just like the nursery rhyme!

Sing a song of sixpence

A pocket full of rye

 Four-and-twenty blackbirds

Baked in a pie.

But among the most interesting of the dishes presented in the beautifully illuminated pages of the book they believe dates back to the 14th Century, is a most peculiar instruction for the preparation of Unicorn, complete with pictures!

EOF- How to Cook a Unicorn 2

The recipe begins appropriately with the phrase “Taketh one unicorne” and continues to instruct the cook to take the meat of the beast and marinate in cloves and garlic and then roast it on the griddle. I think I want seconds, already!

Scholars believe the cookbook was written by famed chef of the moment, Geoffrey Fule, who served as the chef to Philippa of Hainault, Queen of England (1328-1369). Was this all just a jest? Or, could there be some truth to the matter?

Most people assume that Unicorns are only a myth, but perhaps those beautiful ponies with their majestic horns really did roam freely through the lands. Story goes that the unicorn’s horn holds magical properties that could cleanse poisoned waters and render the sick able again. Of course, you could only find them using a virgin. She would wander the forests until the unicorn, smelling the scent of virgin flesh, would greet her with his big hard spiralled horn . . .

LAST UNICORN

Today the unicorn has been reduced to the world animated child fantasy and nursery rhymes, but thousands of years ago, the Ancient Greeks didn’t just believe in the creatures as mythical beings, but as full fledge creatures which they studied and recorded in their natural history texts. We can also find mentions of the animal and its supernatural strength in various books of The Bible.

So, I guess the mystery is just bound to live on. Perhaps Fule was just using his imagination, and jotting down his ideas for a “What-if” kind of situation, but with all that heavy illuminating (which would take months on end), its hard to believe there wouldn’t have been a specific need for a Unicorn recipe. Also note that “COOKING” as we know it today, was much more of a magical and mystical art, especially in the Medieval times and Renaissance; an art that would run parallel to that of alchemy and other sacred knowledge practices.

Many grimoires from the same period will contain recipes for food alongside the details to invocating spirits, so perhaps Fule was not only a reputable chef, but was somewhat of a magician, who knew secrets, such as where to source Unicorn, and the advantages and benefits to eating it . . .

EOF- How to Cook A Unicorn 3

The idea of eating a unicorn definitely is kind of gross, but I’m sure with the proper preparation it would be tolerable – or just skip the meal and steal the horn from the kitchen wench. Did they once cook Unicorn meat for the King & Queens of England?  It’s still a toss-up for me. What do YOU think?

+STYLE IDOL+ Dennis Wilson {The Bad Beach Boy}

“They say I live a fast life. Maybe I just like a fast life. I wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world. It won’t last forever, either. But the memories will.”

-Dennis Wilson

+++

This spring and summer we are all about Dennis Wilson, the infamous bad boy and drummer of The Beach Boys. The band brought the beach lifestyle to the forefront of popular culture in the 1960s , creating a romantic notion that still resides in the populous today. But without Dennis, the iconic boy band would have been lost.

It’s hard to think of that era without the The Beach Boys and their iconic sound, a mix of harmony, rhythm, soul, and blues all dedicated to Southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and girls.

Hits such as Surfin USA, California Girls, and Good Vibrations, encapsulated the image we still associate with the notion of surf and beach living to this day.

Their music certainly came to define the dreams and musings of many who longed for the coasts and beaches of California, and the utopian recluse this magical land of surf and sun could provide (Don’t tell me it’s just us!)

Though his eldest brother Brian Wilson is accredited with much of the band’s creative and technical genius, it was the rebel bad boy drummer Dennis who lived and breathed the California that inspired the band in the first place.

+ + + +

“I don’t do much surfin’, no I don’t. Actually, I don’t even know how to surf, but one guy in the group is a real good surfer, he’s a lot better than any of us, actually, all of us put together. His name is Dennis Wilson, of course, he’s our drummer, and he’s actually the inspiration behind this whole sort of surfing image for the Beach Boys. He encouraged me to write a surfing song a couple, 2, 3 years ago which started the whole thing moving.”

Brian Wilson, St. Louis 1964

Perhaps you noticed, but Dennis certainly had a different presence and a certain swag, as they say, compared to the rest of the band.  Even his eldest brother Brian, who created most of the music during The Beach Boys’ hit making days, knew that Dennis and his SoCal rebel lifestyle was the clue to the puzzle of making a name for themselves.

Dennis always seems a mystery, a part of his embodiment of the surfing rock n’ roll image, you could say. Definitely an archetype of rebellion, desire, and thirst for danger. Behind his eyes there are stories and thoughts completely untold.

There are not many rock stars today who truly live the fantasies they suggest in their music. Dennis was not only a surfer, but also a pro drag racer, sailor, movie star, and notorious womanizer. These are the stories and tales written into almost every hit breaking, chart smashing song produced by the band.

As much a piece of the puzzle to The Beach Boys’ success, Dennis never seemed to be able to stay far from trouble. As early back as childhood, Dennis was known for getting in fights, and failing classes.  He married four times, and had developed a heavy habit for drugs and alcohol.

Most can definitely agree he had some demons.

Free-spirited Dennis would hit the ultimate heights of his notoriety when it was found out that he had housed Charles Manson and his cult for a time. Viewing the group as just a bunch of cosmically inclined free loving spirits with a itching for music, Dennis welcomed the “family” into his home, and housed them for several months.

During this time Charles Manson and his groupies were hoping to become the next great music act with the help of Dennis. Dennis would indeed get some of their songs out there, but reworked for The Beach Boys, and in 1968 they would release the single “Never Learn Not To Love” written by Dennis, a reworking of a Charles Manson original.

Morbid, considering the message, and later the acts committed by the Manson Family in the Hollywood Hills…This attachment to the Manson family would always stain Dennis’ reputation, and only further instill his bad boy image in the public mind.

His 1977 solo debut album “Pacific Ocean Blue” was a huge critical hit for the artist, which allowed him to demonstrate his very own unique and progressive point-of-view. Many fans and critics agree it is Dennis’ fearlessness, drama, and deep soul that almost eclipse The Beach Boys altogether.

These are the traits we admire in the man. The adventurer in all aspects. His music. His life. His soul. And the whole time, he wasn’t even trying. He just simply was the most pure form of himself at all times. He just was.

His style is almost the same. It is not pent up in being cool, it just is…sounds silly, but most of the time Dennis Wilson was just chucking clothes on. His wardrobe is simple, always comfortable, and fitted just right. Classic, but he shakes it up with his rough and messy sort of way about him.

Aaron Eckhart is set to star in a film entitled “The Drummer” documenting the last six tragic years of Dennis Wilson’s life that included losing his yacht “Harmony”, the loss of The Beach Boys recording studios, being kicked out of The Beach Boys, and the subsequent abuse of alcohol and drugs to the bitter end.

Wilson’s body was found curled up in a fetal position at the corner of the dock that once harbored his yacht, Harmony – one of his greatest joys, as well as the scene for many dramas in his life. He had spent the afternoon drinking and diving into the waters finding objects he had thrown over his boat and into the water.

After nearly an hour of searching, they were able to drag his body out of the 13 feet of bone chilling water at the Marina Del Rey boat slip just three days after Christmas, 1983.

At 39, Dennis Wilson was already a legend in every right. He had inspired his band to create an entire persona around him, and with that they became America’s most famous and beloved band in history.

His devilish grin, and candid charm kept him a favorite of the group, and with a wicked ability to adapt and change, Dennis kept the band going during the band’s hardest times. Sadly, no one would be able to help carry him through his own.

Dennis Wilson was given a burial to sea, his favorite place on Earth, and an honor reserved only to members of the military. The perfect resting place for a restless, wandering, and beautiful  soul.
