BAD GIRL BEAUTY: Vintage Mugshot Makeup + Hair Inspiration

The Mugshot. Definitely a work of art.

We’ve had a few of them come into our possession over the years, and they are always full of so much fascinating mystery. They definitely have a special quality to them; you know that person did something “wrong” and then they paid for it. Most of the time we don’t know what that “wrong”-doing was, or what happened to them thereafter, and for someone with a vivid imagination like ours, it can provide endless amounts of entertainment.

Sites like Small Town Noir give new life to these individuals and their stories, and many of the mugshots that really inspired us for this post are taken from there. Definitely check it out!

Mugshots were first devised in 1888 by French police clerk Alphonse Bertillon who devised the classic format of a side by side profile and head on photograph on one sheet to keep track of the various delinquents making their way in and out of the justice system.

This format provides a unique portrait of the individual at their most vulnerable and/or volatile so its interesting to seek out the various expressions you can find.  Vintage ones definitely have a lot more appeal to them with the various photographic qualities you can find out there compared to the ratchet digital captures they use today.

So, lets indulge a little . . . This is a gallery invoking the spirit of bad ass bad girls in all their irreverence, modernity, boldness, and femme fatale glory . . .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we can’t help but appreciate these stylish bad girls for all their bad ass glory!

Pay special attention to the makeup & hair (especially the 50s / 60s era mugshots) whose eyeliner, cat eyes, and bouffants are definitely making a comeback today!

The Eye of Faith X Style Group {BEHIND THE SCENES} Vintage Inspired Fashion Shoot

metallic gold 1950s brocade ‘Babylon Rock Goddess’ dress by The Eye of Faith

{photo by Derrick Vanderkolk @stylegroup }

So, as you may or may not know, in the past two years we have evolved our purveyance of time traveled vintage clothing to creating one of a kind handmade fashions inspired by the {past} to influx the {present} and change the {future} of style.

It really made sense in our mind to make this shift, and has led to some incredible opportunities. While we are making new clothes, many of our materials are still vintage, which makes these pieces all the more special, and perfectly in tuned to our philosophy.

We often say we didn’t choose fashion as a destiny, but it truly chose us!

[Check out our past collections: HOLLYWOOD BABYLON / VALLEY OF THE DOLLS / TAROT ]

Which leads us to this video, which is a super wicked behind the scenes glimpse of a vintage inspired photo shoot we had the opportunity of collaborating on with Style Group!

We had the honour of working with photographer Derrick Vanderkolk who helped us transform his Cotton Factory studio into a timeless jetset rock n roll pad, and with the help of Nate Belgrave we have this memorable behind the scenes glimpse of a truly amazing day.

The undeniable Nicole Buston truly gave us some magical moments which we will be sharing on the site, so stay tuned! And of course, we couldn’t do it without the help of our makeup artist extraordinaire Janet Granados.

When people ask us how we’ve been, and we say “Just keeping on, keeping on…” – this is what we mean!

We were given a piece of advise once from the Canadian mentalist Chris Mysterion back in our humble beginnings, who said: “When it comes to being in a creative field, you never dodge at an opportunity to collaborate, to do things, to create”, and we’ve held this mantra close to our heart and mind ever since.

Seems to be working out.

Rewatching these moments makes us know that we are definitely on the right track!

STYLE {WISE} Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922)

HŠxan (1922) Filmografinr: 1922/06

Poor little hysterical witch! In the middle ages you were in conflict with the church. Now it is with the law.

Title Card: “Häxan (1922)”

We really ought to be saving this one for our own private inspiration board, but a higher wisdom has urged us to share.  We swear!

This sinisterly beautiful Style {WISE} is from the archives of cinema history. Back to the days of the silent film, where the power of imagery ruled supreme.

haxan devils

The film is the 1922 Pseudo Documentary Art-House Horror Silent Classic, Häxan (pronounced “hek-sen”). Imaginations soared through creative interpretations of alleged real-life events right up through to the early twentieth century.  The Swedish Film was directed, written, and starring Benjamin Christensen as the Devil himself.

Ultimately  comparing the hysteria of contemporary (1921) women with the behaviour of the witches in the Middle Ages; the film concludes that they are very similar. Hey, we never said a peep! {click here for more}

haxan2-1

Title Card: Centuries have passed and the Almighty of medieval times no longer sits in his tenth sphere.

Title Card: We no longer sit in church staring terrified at the frescoes of the devils.

Title Card: The witch no longer flies away on her broom over the rooftops.

Title Card: But isn’t superstition still rampant among us?

Title Card: Is there an obvious difference between the sorceress and her customer then and now?

Title Card: We no longer burn our old and poor. But do they not often suffer bitterly?

Title Card: And the little woman, whom we call hysterical, alone and unhappy, isn’t she still a riddle for us?

Title Card: Nowadays we detain the unhappy in a mental institution or – if she is wealthy – in a modern clinic.

Title Card: And then we will console ourselves with the notion that the mildly temperate shower of the clinic has replaced the barbaric methods of medieval times.

Häxan (1922)

What’s most fascinating is the way they amp up the already iconic images we have in our mind when we turn our thoughts to the idea of witchcraft, the frenzy of the medieval times, and the rugged decay of the Medieval Times. All these elements are intensified and, almost glamourized, for the silver screen in a way only the 1920s could make happen.

Wouldn’t it be great to  see more powerful imagery like this come to the forefront today, while still staying beautiful ? Perhaps some of you beauties will find some inspiration to take with you after your visit here with The Eye of Faith.

Witchcraft through the Ages (1922 Sweden) aka Haxan Documentary

Häxan: Witchcraft through the ages, is a true experience for the eyes and ears,  with music beautifully composed by Emil Reesen.

Seemingly a silent horror sensation, but truly a documentation of modern man.

So much faith is thrown into the blind eyes of God, as fellow man takes judgement and punishment upon himself.

Friendly Update from Yours Truly {theEye} . . . Happy Holidays, and Thanks for a Sweet Year!!!

Bruce Lee in 1970s Black and White Floral Graphic Shirt- Vintage Mens Inspiration- Th Eye of Faith Blog

As you may have noticed, we’ve been a little tardy on updating the blog.

Not to worry, we are still very much present . . . buzzing around in the background; making strides everyday we survive this crazy world.

For the past, nearly two months now, we have been without a charger for our computer, which has made things quite “unique”, to say the least. Yes, we do have very kind friends who do let us borrow their’s when the time permits, but overall, we’ve been struggling to keep the battery alive to do as much as check our email, do a Facebook update or two, and regular maintenance on our Etsy shop.

All this has left little opportunity to do what we so love – what started it all – which is keep the site updated with awesome vintage inspiration! But fear not, we will tread on, and hopefully by the New Year we will be back to our consistent selves.

In the meantime, there are nearly a thousand posts from the {PAST} you can delve yourselves into by perusing the backlog, or use the sidebar on the left to discern your gaze to the many particular categories we have offered over the years. Our personal favourite, E.O.F. Style Idols & Divinities, is much recommended reading.

We have been doing a lot of cool stuff (like styling Charles Bradley and The Beaches for Hamilton’s Supercrawl), and creating epic fashions shows which we will update the site with in the coming weeks.

Overall, we can’t complain. Other than the time its taking for our charger to make it to us from China!!! What a pain . . .

But you know what? We’ll survive… After all, we’ve survived much worse.

So keep in touch! We’ll be around.

Hope you all have a Happy Holidays, and can’t wait to see your bright shining minds back again!

Until we meet again,
