{STYLE-WISE} The Secret Society Style of Tom Buchanan

secret society style- joel edgerton as tom buchanan

Indeed there are many sinfully stylish idols to worship throughout “The Great Gatsby”; like masculine and cool Jordan, soft and feminine Daisy, even the bookish narrator Nick. And then of course there’s the poster boy himself, Jay Gatsby ,who shall always remain in the fore realm of our memory as a hero to determination and an eternal icon of excess.

But, one that is often overlooked has to be Tom Buchanan; the brutish and masculine husband of Daisy.

This powerful Yale alum is as much the style savant as any of the other devilish dandies that parade themselves throughout the story. This time around, however, Tom Buchanan is as much the idol of style as anyone of his other stylish co-sars.

For instance, actor Joel Edgerton, who plays Tom Buchanan mentions “There’s a Skull and Bones insignia sewn into it that may not even be visible,” to Empire Magazine, adding a unique twist to the characterization of the East Egg Prepster.

After all, Tom Buchanan is of the upper crust of society, and a recent graduate of Yale University, so why wouldn’t he be a member of the elusive Skull and Bones from which Presidents, Astronauts, and Great Leaders in society are born? Allegedly.

I thought it interesting that several years ago a human skull that had been carved into a ballot box was put up to bid at Christie’s (and later pulled under controversial circumstances), and more and more, this particular secret society  (No. 322)  is coming to the forefront of our own culture; it’s the perfect play on history and style that make for a refreshing take on such a popular story. The bold reinvention is most definitely in their favour.

We thought it only {STYLE-WISE} to look at style through the eyes of the ivy league, and look at secret society style with a time travelling hustler’s unique eye for detail. . .

{Do it Right} “The Two Faces of January” (2014) starring Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen

The Two Faces of January- Vintage Menswear Fashion Inspired- The Eye of Faith Blog- Kirsten and Viggo

Based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith (‘Purple Noon‘/’The Talented Mr. Ripley’), and directed by the screenwriter of Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Drive‘, not to mention, starring Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen in a Hitchcockian thriller set against the backdrop of Greece in the early 1960s- ‘The Two Faces of January’ is hands down one of our most anticipated films of 2014.

The ingredients are all there for a great film, and the reviews have been generous in its favour, so I guess we will just wait until it makes its way to this end of the world to enjoy all the intrigue and vintage fashion splendor.

1962 does good on them both, as both Viggo and Kirsten have never looked so good.

A nod to the {past} never hurts!

{STYLE-WISE + MUSIC MINUTE} “Mambo” from West Side Story!

I’ve always been a huge fan of this film, not only for its modern take on a classic tale, and some superb, unmatched, out-of-this-world choreography from Jerome Robbins (who was fired from the film for his back breaking attention to detail), but msot of all it’s amazing sense of style!

style wise- west side story- bad ass street gang vintage

Even almost 60 years later, it’s absolutely timeless, and pretty far advanced with its popping colors and slick silhouettes. In fact, if you pay attention, you might notice that lots of these looks are being rehashed for the runways today. And turn your head down any city street and you’ll see the same kicks, the same two toned blazers, the same shirts, and all the same skinny jeans those boys are wearing in the film.

mambo- dance scene- west side story- vintage style wise

This is the gym scene, and the famous “Mambo” duel the Jets and Sharks bring to the school dance – and the place that Maria first meets Tony (or Tony first meets Maria?). Yes, it’s a sappy story, AND a musical, but it has a lot guts to pair New York street gangsters against each other doing modern dance. If anything, it’s all a bit surreal the way it comes together, which makes for an especially powerful visceral visual experience.

Pair it off with some exquisite orchestration, and you have a timeless classic to forever remember. And if you don’t take my word for it. You’re a fool. Hate to say it, but this film has style in spades, and if you can’t get past the musical aspect of it all – I feel sorry for you . . .

Been super busy lately, so apologize for the lack of posts! Will be getting back on track shortly. That’s why I thought it appropriate to give you a double duty inspiration today.

Style + Music. A perfect combination.

So this is love, isn’t it?

Rebel rebel.

Yell.
