Don’t panic, this is just a transition. It’s just been announced this week Playboys Chicago headquarters will be closing their doors, and editorial, art and photo departments will be moving to California to continue publishing the magazine. But no word on the fate of other departments which will still run from the Chicago location.
“Some of the magazine’s Chicago employees have been asked to relocate, while others have been asked to stay on in Chicago to ensure a seamless transition,” Playboy spokeswoman Theresa Hennessey said in a statement.
Hefner acknowledged the upcoming changes himself in an October 2012 interview: “I think we’re probably going to be doing that out of economic concerns, yes,” Hefner said. “We will be probably consolidating on the West Coast.”
The magazine was established from a Chicago apartment in 1953, but it wasn’t until 1975 that Hefner relocated to L.A. and founded the Playboy Mansion we know and love.
Today we pay homage to the fine art department that endured for so many years with some of our favourite Playboy covers.
Do you think Playboy still has a bright future in sunny California?

This takes me back. Mother’s second husband had a stack of old Playboys, late 60’s to early 70’s. Quite an eye opener for a teenage Catholic boy! And I appreciate those old pictorials even more now. Advanced gynaecological studies don’t exactly enhance the mystery of the feminine.
