Lizzie Borden Lies!!! ‘LIZZIE’ Starring Chloë Sevigny + Kristen Stewart

What is our fascination with Lizzie Borden? Is it that she possibly got away with the grisly murders of her father and step mother back in 1892? Oh yes, most definitely a major reason, and its this mystery that keeps fascinating new generations everyday.

We may never know, but that’s the beauty in a good mystery! The spaces between not solidified can be filled with many possibilities, and that’s what the new film “Lizzie” starring Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny seems to explore.

If you know us well, and I hope you do, you know that Chloë Sevigny is just one of those people on the top tiers of everything. Goddess of style, art, a muse to many, and obviously one of the coolest women of all time…so needless to say, we are psyched for this film!

Check out the trailer, and you will see why!

Spicy stuff! Looks like a real nail biter, and the period details are absolutely on-point! Have a little bit of a feel where they are going with the story, but excited to see it play out in real life!

Glad to see Kristen Stewart staying dedicated to unique artful films since her return to the screen.

Two modern muses! SIDENOTE: Can huge Edwardian sleeves just take over the scene, already!!! Can’t wait for more inspiration to come…

Maila Nurmi: Beat Babe vs. Squares !!!

{MAILA NURMI & ELVIS PRESLEY GOOFING OFF}

When we say the name Maila Nurmi, you might not know who the fuck we are talking about. What if we were to say, Vampira? Of course!

Our current climate is so influenced and inspired by her delightful darkness, gothic glamour, and overall irreverence to almost everything! Oh, and did we mention she was friends with James Dean and Elvis??!

You might have even read our STYLE {DIVINITY} tribute to the goddess of creepy chic. Somehow in the 1950s at the height of conservative moral values, this daring Finnish actress rose to stardom with a status-quo bashing gig as television’s first last night horror show host of The Vampira Show which officially premiered on May 1, 1954!

As Vampira she retold the story of women in the media – not just prim and proper and ready to serve; the only thing Vampira was ready to serve was a bloody head on a platter for brunch. Its still hard for me to wrap my head around how she was able to get away with her gruesome take on House & Home living. All the more reason to worship this divine creature for everything she stood for.

Now, while Maila found popularity playing Vampira, she was an actress in Hollywood playing many roles. This next clip we found, we fell in love with – showcasing her talents in another rebel archetype that was taking hold in America in the 50s: the lousy beatnik.

A precursor to the hipster of today, a gateway to the free love hippie movement of the 60s and 70s. The beatnik was every conservative’s biggest pain in the ass. Like millennials of the atomic era- they were often viewed as aimless, pretentious, and overall whacky.

This clip taken from the iconic Beat-era classic “The Beatnik Generation” features Maila Nurmi pissing off a couple of squares with her off beat poem sporting a short blonde haircut and a rat on the shoulder;  she completely oozes this infamous generation’s vibe to the max! Its very comical…and tell me she doesn’t look a bit like Katya Zamolodchikova ?!

{CHECK OUT MORE MAILA NURMI INSPIRATION HERE}

Anyways, we thought is was all too fitting for The Eye of Faith and had to share! Lets keep empowering the brave, and blessing the bold, and letting people be the best they can be inside and out!

Let us all be a bit more like Ms. Nurmi, shall we?

{STYLE WISE} ANTONIONI’S “ZABRISKIE POINT” +BLOW IT UP!!!+

Our latest addition to the altar of E.O.F. {STYLE IDOLS & DIVINITIES) was the impossibly stunning Mark Frechette, whose stardom originates as the handsome hero of Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 counter-culture cult classic Zabriskie Point.

We thought it apropos to delve into the fantastic and fundamental stylish-ness of this poignant and severely under-rated film.

Whilst the flower power movement is mostly seen as Woodstock, flower children dancing in parks, peace, love, and rainbows – the counter-culture movement that began to arise from the horrors of the Vietnam War and injustices in America was also an aggressive and violent force ready for radical change.

Parties like The Weathermen, Baader Meinhoff, and the Black Panthers fought for revolutionary change from the capitalist bourgeoise regimes that still run the world to this day.

Much the way Antonioni’s fashionable masterpiece Blow-Up captured the Swinging London of the mid-60s in his chic docu-stylized manner, Zabriskie Point aimed to shed light on this particular moment in time.

The film even features a cameo by THE political power-force and activist Kathleen Cleaver (who is also very due to be inaugurated to the rank of E.O.F. DIVINITY}!

The turbulently good-looking Mark Ferchette plays Mark, an armed student radical on the run from the cops.

While flying an airplane over the desert he spots Daria Halprin who plays Daria, a gorgeous bohemian goddess who may or may not have a thing for wealthy older business execs, and they engage in an erotic (and dusty) desert orgy.

Whilst a desert orgy might seem like a tried and true climax for any film- the real climax drifts dreamily to Daria’s increasing discomfort and disgust over bourgeoise attempts to redevelop the gorgeous Mojave desert.

What follows this moment of realization is a fantastical finale that tells a thousand thoughts, statements, and poetic musings through the universality of cinema.

This final moment cannot be denied.

SPOILER ALERT!

{WATCH THE FINALE BELOW}

If you watched the clip, you can see why Zabriskie Point  is really fuelling our psych-rock summer.

Would have to recommend musing over the desert love scene, if you’re in the romantic mood . . .

And whether you’re in it to take in all the timelessly cool/counter-culture chic/boho American stylings of costume designer Ray Summers or the epic psych-rock soundtrack that features a theme song by Roy Orbison, and tracks by the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, The Youngbloods, Patti Page, and the ultimate Pink Floyd– this film is ICONIC in every right!!!

Interestingly, both of the films stars were non-actors who both appeared in exactly three films.

Mark Ferchette was a carpenter discovered during a loud argument on the streets of Boston where he allegedly threw a flower pot at a woman, while Daria Halprin was spotted by Antonioni in the Jack O’Connell documentary ‘Revolution‘ which profiled the counter-culture movement in San Francisco.

The two make for a beautiful All-American bohemian brunette couple, whose enigmatic bond is as mysterious as it is inspiring…

They gained the status of the first counter-culture couple, and actually maintained a real life romance, which later led to them getting a string of magazine covers, TV appearances, and even joining a cult together.

After all, a couple that joins a cult together stays together!

”It put me in a kind of lifestyle and situation that in many, many ways I wasn’t ready to deal with,”

-Daria Halprin

Halprin would later leave the Fort Hill Community that was founded by musician Mel Lyman, who was known as the Charles Manson o the East Coast,  while Ferchette was arrested for armed robbery and died in prison from a weightlifting accident joining the notorious Dead at 27 crew.

Whilst the film garnered lack lustre reviews at the time for its meandering plot and docu-surrealism which may have just been a little too ahead of its time.

{watch it now}

But, that’s what’s great about exploring the {PAST} you have the opportunity of looking at it through the lens of the {PRESENT} and hopefully keep the dialogue going into the {FUTURE}.

In a world as messed up today (if not more than)- a film like Zabriskie Point is a fearless reminder of the people who almost 50 years ago cried for change, the timelessness of true style, and the dreaminess of the desert . . .

Where did this courage and fight go in our day to day? Have we really been brainwashed to believe everything will be OK?

Sometimes it feels like you just might pull a Daria, too?

Talk about American beauty . . . do yourself a favour and watch this film!

Music Minute: Krzysztof Komeda “Rosemary’s Baby Interlude”

Rosemarys-Baby-p01

Setting Up For Stan- Rosemary's Baby- Scream

“A chance to sit quietly and find out who you are; where you’ve been and where you’re going.”

-Ira Levin, Rosemary’s Baby

{published in 1967}

I called this an interlude because of its sauntering sweet nature between the high stakes and drama that is”Rosemary’s Baby”.

Polanski’s iconic film had many claiming he had beckoned the murder of his glamorous superstar wife, Sharon Tate just months following the film’s release, with this chilling tale of a wife sold to a coven of witches to give birth to the child of Satan!

The track is featured in a montage of Rosemary’s gleefully completing the contemporary turn-over of her new apartment (just before receiving a visit from her eccentric neighbour, Minnie).

The myth of the curse on the film was further perpetuated when John Lennon was murdered just outside the historic and now notorious Dakota building (below) just across the street from Central Park in New York City.

Seting Up For Satan- Rosemary's Baby-The Dakota

in·ter·lude

noun \ˈin-tər-ˌlüd\

3. a musical composition inserted between the parts of a longer composition, a drama, or a religious service

So enjoy this brief interlude, and sail away with this new vintage classic. . .

Don’t forget; although, we got the 90s thing going on – “CASPER, THE FRIENDLY GHOST” is a certified vintage cartoon staple who first appeared in book form in 1939, and later became the beloved animated ghost we know today in 1945!!!

THE EYE OF FAITH on GWG TV!!!

THE EYE OF FAITH ON TV- Vintage Photo of Family Watching Television - 1958

Check it out friends and followers!!!! We’re on the TV!!! GWG TV to be exact . . .

You know, its interesting because Paul and myself (Aaron) were talking just a few weeks ago about how cool it would be if some cool bloggers and/or stylistas would find us and record us for an interview, and as it goes, you put it out there. . . and sure enough, it was only a few days before we got an email from the radical Felicia Mancini of Girls with Gunz asking us whether we’d like to be featured in an interview for their website.

How EOF is that?!

Girls with Gunz is a really exciting and provocative force in the city, and we got the chance to team up with them earlier this year for some secret mission-type stuff (its all still very hush hush), so the questions was truly a no-brainer.

The interview was shot in the shop by the wonderful and outrageous China Corvino who really killed it when it came to batting down the hatches and creating a vid that we are proud to be a part of!

Screen shot 2015-04-28 at 1.54.47 PM

For the first time you can sit down with us and get a little piece of who we are, and the things that inspire us, and what set us off on this crazy wild journey that we now call THE EYE OF FAITH!

Little did the ladies know, they were truly making our dreams come true . . .

Thanks Girls with Gunz, and be sure to check them out too, while you’re at it!

SNAPSHOTS FROM THE VINTAGE MARKETPLACE 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This year’s Vintage Marketplace was an exciting weekend for us, and we still can’t seem to shake it!

We wanted to give an opportunity to our friends and fans who couldn’t make it to the event (held this year at the very vintage Hamilton Convention Centre) to see what we were up to with some photos we took over those eventful two days where style and history collided! It truly was a meeting of the {PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE}, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year!!!

First off, hats off to the team at VMP for everything they did to make sure our experience was the best it could be. Shout out to Lacey Battaglio who always did everything she could to help, and keep strains and stresses to a minimum. Also to the fabulous DJ Donna Lovejoy who provided her signature spin to many a vintage classic that helped give us the pep in our step after a dubiously long Saturday night!!!

Luckily for us, we always surround ourselves with the best people, and our team of vintage and style aficionados really came together to create what could only be described as a wildly dynamic and captivating booth that meshed together all of our areas of expertise and individual styles (and in record time, I might add)!

Another highlight of the Vintage Marketplace was the awesome vintage fashion show produced by Whitney McMeekin of Girl on the Wing which showcased looks from her own collection, as well as our friends at New Old’s, Love in the Afternoon, Vintage Soul Geek (!!!), and of course, yours truly! The looks showed the wild variety of vintage styles available in the city, and the multitude of looks that look as fresh today as they ever did.

Best of all, we got a sneak peak at the {FUTURE} of fashion with an encore catwalk from three fresh new faces who just couldn’t stop at the opportunity to soak in the limelight!

Overall, a successful and fun weekend spent amongst friends and plenty of inspiration for next year!!!

Until next time,
