{PHOTO BLAST} Playing With Pandora’s Box

Louise Brooks- Legendary in Pandoras Box

You know how the story goes, don’t you?

She was a seductive woman  and the first woman in Greek mythology. Made from Earth to punish Prometheus for his overreaching and theft of the sacred fire, her youthful curiosity led her to opening a mysterious jar, the “Pandora’s Box”, that contained all the evils of humanity, releasing them into the wild.

According to the myth, she closed the jar leaving only HOPE inside.

Thanks, Pandora.

+

It’s an age old tale going back to Ancient times, but the story is still permeating our landscape to this day.

Was Pandora just curious, or did she have a bit of a wild streak? You know how they say if your parents say not to do something, you’re going to do it. A little work of the Rebel Spirits, perhaps?

We wanted to make a {PHOTO BLAST} dedicated to the ultimate bad girl, and the many incarnations we saw of her. So please, enjoy!

Until Next Time,

Making an Impact: “Don’t You Dare” by The Impacts {and the Mystery of “Kelly”}

Here’s a newly uncovered lost treasure we happened to find lying about. What a shame. This is one that is sure to have you grinding and grooving all the night through. Just shy of making you want to howl at the moon. This one’s called “Don’t You Dare” and it’s played by none other than The Impacts.

Hopefully we’ve all been there. That terrible yearning, the endless nights. Incredible emotions. Melting.

I am bound to a fate worse than death if I don’t have you around

Tell me how you really feel! The track really has the ability to bring you back. Back to a time. Back to a place.

Originally The Fogcutters, the band based out of St. Martin’s High School in Lacey, Washington delivers all the sadness and cool you could expect from the illustriously mysterious Pacific Northwest.

Locked in the bowels of a boarding school, the troupe of 8 would find constant challenge in having members from two States (Washington and Oregon), and the struggle to find a place to practice amongst the monks and cloisters of their privileged boarding Academy. The School on a Hill.

Usually when thinking “ivy style”, that ultimate mid-century academic cool you automatically think athletic. You think the jocks and their varsity jackets, cardigans, t-shirts- the whole bit. But with The Impacts you have that same All-American Vintage Academia with the radness only being part of a rock ‘n’ roll band can lend a young group of Dapper Dans! You have to admit, it just sounds good.

You might not always get the cheerleader, but who cares. They’re boring. They’d be doing homework instead of catching your shows. God knows how bad the world falls for a good boy band. Also, think groupies. Groupies. Catch a falling star, right?

The Impacts would make their run from 1961-1964 and ultimately consisted of 8 members. All have been accounted for except the 5th member, the original rhythm guitar. His first name unknown, all he is remembered as is his last name – “Kelly”

All in all, I get a real sense of mystery from these pictures, and this song. Not to mention, the mystery of “Kelly”, and his elusive first name. Have any clues or premonitions?

“Okay, what is it tonight?
Please just tell me what the hell is wrong?
Do you want to eat? Do you want to sleep?
Do you want to drown?
Just settle down, settle down, settle down

I’ll give you candy, give you diamonds
Give you pills, give you anything you want
Hundred dollar bills
I’ll even let you watch the shows you want to see
Just marry me, marry me, marry me”

So not only are we in love with the single; Anything Anything, by Dramarama, but we are obsessed with this one when it comes to Karaoke!  Us boys at The Eye of Faith have become addicted to singing our guts out every weekend.  We suggest it to all, it’s a great stress reliever.

Leave it to a band called “Garbage” to style one of the most iconic Bond songs ever made.

We’ve profiled Adele’s stunning take on the Bond song with “Skyfall” back in 2012, and still agree that it is one of the best, as well as a masterful encapsulation of the {PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE}.

Garbage did the same thing, only 15 years ago, which in our world makes it certifiably vintage!

That makes it all the more fun to revisit now and marvel at the power of Shirley Manson’s voice and the seductive lyrical quality that only a GREAT Bond song can provide.

{STYLE WISE} Invoking Jim Morrison . . .

JIM MORRISON - you are not my enemy

For the last while we’ve been a little obsessed, or encouraged, by Jim Morrison’s ghost. You cannot deny this guy has style. Ever since the teenage years (weird to say), there’s been a fascination with this bit of a God.

An idol in all respects…I had one of my very first writing gigs doing a style summary of the legend for the website, Everyguyed, which still operates today as an online source for men’s style and tips for your everyday when you’re a guy. I remember the vivid rush whilst composing the words to describe this very 70s tainted, easy-breezy, laid back, effortless, easy cool.

Some might point fingers at the snake skin and leather (‘Lizard King’, after all), but I think it was in his soul. It was a cool, dark, anointed spirit that still contemplates to this day.

As fate would have it, I also wrote a piece regarding men’s vintage clothing staples and tips for finding and incorporating these pieces into your style. So, if you want a piece of my {past}, do check it out!

The Nagging Doubt You Can’t Shake . . . PRISSY LIPS!!!

PRISSY LIPS - 1

Meet PRISSYLIPS, a Brighton-based alternative due consisting of Crysi de Milo & Reuben Drake. They play “post-apocalyptic new wave protest songs shaped out of love letters, suicide notes, death threats, and shit lists”.

Being the “bright new darlings of the avant-garde”, we couldn’t but help give our friends, fans, and followers a little taste and insight into the “nagging doubt you can’t shake” that is PRISSY LIPS. Keep your eyes and ears open for this gruesome twosome.

Once again, our brilliant correspondent John Wisniewski was able to get the inside scoop!

Check it out:

JOHN: How did Prissy Lips form?
PRISSYLIPS: PRISSYLIPS is what happens when living becomes desperate… it’s the voice of the beaten generation… it’s the culmination of ten years on the edge of the blade.. I met my guitarist, Reuben, about 4 years ago when we were both fucked-up self-destruct-button-pressers and we embarked on a crazy schizo train-wreck of a relationship and this is where we ended up. PRISSYLIPS is like finally clearing your throat properly after 10 years. It is my catharsis, my therapy, my bread and butter and my deepest secrets.
JOHN: What was the first record that you released?
PRISSYLIPS: We haven’t released an LP yet but have an EP (“Hissy Fits”) in production. The first song we released was a 6-minute Bolan-esque guitar ballad  called “Hermaphrodité” which is about the choice I made in being true to myself and so forsaking love! The post-gender blues. I always thought of it as “the Breech Birth of Venus”… it’s a very depressing song but a lot of our songs have come from the dankest, most fucked-up or self-loathing corners of my mind.
JOHN: Prissy recorded a cover of the song “Female Trouble” used in John Waters film of the same name? Are you both fans of John’s films?
PRISSYLIPS: John Waters is pretty much the Pope at our house. His films are staggering works of genius, and Divine a legend. We were honored to be asked to perform at the Brighton premiere of “I Am Divine”, which was an awesome night full of beauty and reverence and boundary destruction… I want to be friends with the Dreamlanders and visit Baltimore. I think John’s book “Shock Value” should be on the bedside table of the world!

Styling Orchards, the Band; Plus BONUS {MUSIC MINUTE} “Oh, Sister” by Orchards

The Eye of Faith -Orchards - Ally Kristensen Photography - 3

I learned long ago that when someone asks you to pull looks for a vaudeville circus inspired shoot, you do so!

Granted, I’ve never been asked to in this life, but something just tells you to jump at the opportunity when its right. We didn’t even have to question whether or not we wanted to be a part of this when the beautiful, and lovely (don’t forget talented) Jessica Panetta asked if we’d want to work together, and pull some looks to bring to a shoot for the city’s finest up-and-coming folk band, Orchards.

The Eye of Faith - Orchards - All Kristensen Photography - 10

Orchards comprises of Anthony William Wallace (violin, banjo), Daniel John Taylor (bass, guitar, ukulele), and Gabrielle Sylvane Charron-Merritt (trumpet, guitar) who are all uber-talented, fun, and highly multi-disciplinary artists who dove right into every scenario with gusto and poise.

Couldn’t have done it without my wardrobe partner, Heather English, who had a great eye for colour and detail (heart!) .

The Eye of Faith -Orchards - Ally Kristensen Photography- 13

Their music is haunting and eloquent with captivating melodies that evoke lost memories from deep within our collective consciousness. The songs are classic and utterly timeless bringing a modern twist to classic folk sounds. Needless to say, their music was the perfect inspiration for the shoot.

We played off the softness and decadent dishevelling of men and women seen in vintage photographs for the quieter moments, and looked for bold and intriguing colour and graphic combinations to complete the circus vibe.

All in all, I think the look completed is a nod to the past, but is completely reinvented – just like Orchard’s own music, which ultimately is the element we all hoped to showcase.

Each shot is so great to look back on, as you remember it all happening – when it was moving, and there were sounds, and laughter, and distraction; not with a photograph. These are magic moments here, captured throughout.

Please enjoy the photographs, and definitely dive into the track below entitled “Oh,Sister” by Orchards for a true escape from the everyday . . .

Music Minute: “Japanese Cigarette Case” by Spoon.

Spoon is one of the bands  . . . it’s hard to put into words, but I always feel like they do something original, and very Spoon. It’s always different, which is the key, and at the same time, it’s always the same – just ultra cool. This song came out a few years ago with their album “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” (which also features the haunting “The Ghost of You Lingers“; if you have the chance, check that out, too).

Just love the vibe, and its ode to eclectic vanity! You can’t go wrong with a “Japanese Cigarette Case”. . . .

Music Minute: “Feel Flows” by The Beach Boys

“Feel Flows” all day and night long with this track from The Beach Boys…

Every time it plays, we like to let the waves take over and go for the ride. Their smooth harmony is definitely the secret remedy to all your cares and worries.

Released in 1971 with their album Surf’s Up, the song was featured in the 1972 surf documentary “5 Summer Stories”, which would lead to the second-coming of the Surf Movie (The first being the ever iconic “Endless Summer” whose poster has become an ever popular go-to graphic). Many fans consider it “one of the best surf films ever made”.

Here’s a short Prologue for the film provided by The Surf Shop!

The Surf-Film genre is still an ever-popular genre today, with a quickly growing audience that loves to embrace the tide, the beauty of nature, and above-all adventure! In fact, the influence of nostalgia for surfing day past can be seen in many of the industry’s top brand names.

Who can blame them? The allure of water and the ocean is about as old as time itself. Not to mention, it’s a great way to play off of time-tested classics, and create something new!
