BAD GIRL BEAUTY: Vintage Mugshot Makeup + Hair Inspiration

The Mugshot. Definitely a work of art.

We’ve had a few of them come into our possession over the years, and they are always full of so much fascinating mystery. They definitely have a special quality to them; you know that person did something “wrong” and then they paid for it. Most of the time we don’t know what that “wrong”-doing was, or what happened to them thereafter, and for someone with a vivid imagination like ours, it can provide endless amounts of entertainment.

Sites like Small Town Noir give new life to these individuals and their stories, and many of the mugshots that really inspired us for this post are taken from there. Definitely check it out!

Mugshots were first devised in 1888 by French police clerk Alphonse Bertillon who devised the classic format of a side by side profile and head on photograph on one sheet to keep track of the various delinquents making their way in and out of the justice system.

This format provides a unique portrait of the individual at their most vulnerable and/or volatile so its interesting to seek out the various expressions you can find.  Vintage ones definitely have a lot more appeal to them with the various photographic qualities you can find out there compared to the ratchet digital captures they use today.

So, lets indulge a little . . . This is a gallery invoking the spirit of bad ass bad girls in all their irreverence, modernity, boldness, and femme fatale glory . . .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we can’t help but appreciate these stylish bad girls for all their bad ass glory!

Pay special attention to the makeup & hair (especially the 50s / 60s era mugshots) whose eyeliner, cat eyes, and bouffants are definitely making a comeback today!

The Eye of Faith X Style Group {BEHIND THE SCENES} Vintage Inspired Fashion Shoot

{photo by Derrick Vanderkolk @stylegroup }

So, as you may or may not know, in the past two years we have evolved our purveyance of time traveled vintage clothing to creating one of a kind handmade fashions inspired by the {past} to influx the {present} and change the {future} of style.

It really made sense in our mind to make this shift, and has led to some incredible opportunities. While we are making new clothes, many of our materials are still vintage, which makes these pieces all the more special, and perfectly in tuned to our philosophy.

We often say we didn’t choose fashion as a destiny, but it truly chose us!

[Check out our past collections: HOLLYWOOD BABYLON / VALLEY OF THE DOLLS / TAROT ]

Which leads us to this video, which is a super wicked behind the scenes glimpse of a vintage inspired photo shoot we had the opportunity of collaborating on with Style Group!

We had the honour of working with photographer Derrick Vanderkolk who helped us transform his Cotton Factory studio into a timeless jetset rock n roll pad, and with the help of Nate Belgrave we have this memorable behind the scenes glimpse of a truly amazing day.

The undeniable Nicole Buston truly gave us some magical moments which we will be sharing on the site, so stay tuned! And of course, we couldn’t do it without the help of our makeup artist extraordinaire Janet Granados.

When people ask us how we’ve been, and we say “Just keeping on, keeping on…” – this is what we mean!

We were given a piece of advise once from the Canadian mentalist Chris Mysterion back in our humble beginnings, who said: “When it comes to being in a creative field, you never dodge at an opportunity to collaborate, to do things, to create”, and we’ve held this mantra close to our heart and mind ever since.

Seems to be working out.

Rewatching these moments makes us know that we are definitely on the right track!

{PHOTOBLAST} MAN, I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN – VINTAGE STYLE INSPIRATION

elizabeth-bergner-1922-man-i-feel-like-a-woman-vintage-style-inspiration-the-eye-of-faith-bad-ass-androgyny-birth-of-modernity

I like being a woman, even in a man’s world. After all, men can’t wear dresses, but we can wear the pants.

I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.

The Eye of Faith Shop Banner Boys

{MUSIC MINUTE} Rainbow Melody: Joni Mitchell, Mama Cass and Mary Travers.

We are so excited to announce that we will be costuming “HAIR” at Hamilton Theatre Inc. this May, and for the first time in ages your boys at The Eye of Faith will be gracing the stage as peace-loving, flower-wearing, fringe-flinging New York City hippies during the Summer of Love!

So to celebrate the news, we thought we’d bring back this {MUSIC MINUTE} that we originally posted back in 2012!

We love this performance from the 6.26.1969 episode of “The Mama Cass Show”! Like, the fact that a celebrity like Mama Cass existed and went as far to hosting her own T.V. show is so flipping cool! This performance features Mama Cass herself, Canadian Lady of the Canyon Joni Mitchell and Peter, Paul & Mary’s own Mary Travers. It’s a beautiful song, and they all look beyond great!

Photos courtesy of Joni Mitchell

Its a great way to kick-off our dive into the rabbit-hole of 60s psychedelic glory, and we can’t wait! We will be posting more inspirations in the days and months to come!

Also in the spirit of The Eye of Faith and our union of the {past},{present}, and {future} check out how remarkable of a parallel it is between the fashion donned by especially Mama Cass and Joni Mitchell align with Chloe’s latest S/S 16 showcase in Paris!

What’s more is that the Claire Waight Keller’s Chloe collection is actual ly an ode to the 90s (after all, 60s bohemian fashions had a bit of a revival in the 90s), so we are actually being treated to quite the smoothie of fashion style, going to show how important it is, and empowering it is to have all eyes open, and take in all we can to create a richer, and ultimately more beautiful life!

{MUSIC MINUTE} MURDER He Says! Betty Hutton cries out loud.

betty-hutton-movie-poster-9999-1020246292[1]

Growing up in the dirty thirties, with a rough and tough childhood, our lady crooner has been through a lot more than most have to experience!

Bouncing around from city to city through her childhood gave this woman real tenacity.  Money troubles abound kept her family on their toes, shifting from town to town running away from the Police.

She had a father who walked out on her family to runaway with another woman, and the only word again from him was a telegram alerting the family of Mr. Hutton’s suicide.

Maybe her irreverence to her father helped fuel her fire for this tune.  Betty does her rendition of ‘Murder he says’ in 1943, and we are moved!! We’ve love her styling of ANY song , and we are suckers for her straight-shooting bluntness and of course  we’d love any tune that cries out ‘MURDER’.

Don’t forget: KARAOKE CABARET TUESDAY tonight at 8:30p!! Hosted by yours truly . . .

{STYLE WISE} This is no Mirror, a Twin is Here.

Turns out two is always better than one, we’ve recently discovered that theres a serious upside when you get double for the money.  No matter the bargain, or the price, we can find luxury in abundance.

Traveling the world, discovering the new and exotic, there’s so much to fathom, we aren’t sure if we could handle it all all by our lonesome.

Two Eyes are indeed better than one.

We wouldn’t be bias, and select only the femme fetale who walk on the wild side, oh no no.  We have seen many people, far and wide, far and few between when it comes to quality.  We have found men and women all different but with something the same;  A twin.  Arguably stylish, but always in style, we’ve found double trouble when it comes to cool.  Enjoy this share of photos that are all equally timeless.

Sincerely,

Commercial Break: Suspiria! (1977)

We had been anticipating watching this one for some time, and finally this past weekend we indulged in a masterpiece called Suspiria! Starring a young Jessica Harper who’s starred in The Phantom of the Paradise and Rocky Horror Picture Show II, and keeps us entertained to this very day as the Crabby Cook.

This is tale of an elite european ballet School where collecting on debt is a ‘charming habit’ of the students(insert the very sexy and very shadey Barbara Magnolfi), and the teacher’s and staff know more about the historic ballet school then they’d ever to let on.

From the Blind Pianist, to a creepy little blonde boy, this flick has got it all, including a killer soundtrack!

Drawn in by the Euro-Horror King, Dario Argento’s name alone, we knew we’d be in for some fun gore, sexy girls, and supernatural spooks, but were clueless to where the story may lead us other than reading a brief synopsis before hand. To our delight, every scene was as beautiful as the last!

With a set as beautiful as any work of art, adorned in blue and red velvet wallpaper, labyrinths of stripes,  a wide assortment of stained glass windows, shiny black lackerred wood panels and door’s, mile high ceilings, and an opulent Serpent staircase we’d love to climb.

We are introduced to the school through the eyes of a wide -eyed newcomer , played by Jessica Harper, who quickly grows suspicious of the happenings within the domineering school.

Upon her arrival, she witness a leggy buck-toothed blond fleeing from the school in a rainstorm, and learns the next morning of the school escapees dreadful fate (emphasis on the wide assortment of stained glass…).

Odd events lead to odder. Must be more than Voodoo? With everyday shrouded in mysteries, it isn’t until our heroin shares her suspicions with her classmate, played by lovely Stefani Casini, that the puzzle truly  begins to come together.  Leading Harper to a Psychiatric Convention and conversations of Witches and Covens.  Speculation leads to proof when it’s realized the Ballet school was founded by a great and powerful Witch who was said to be killed in a fire at the turn of the century.

If you’re a fan of Black Swan or Rocky Horror Picture Show, this one’s for you!

This is no chick flick by any means despite the gaggle of gals in ballet shoes.  Scene after scene, Dario Argento will keep you shocked and in suspense as this tale unravels.  Enjoy the Eyeful of opulence but be prepared for some gross yet charming gut-turning death’s.

Heed our words…This is a great film!!

All things we might never leave behind . . .

Images like this are wonderful remnants that still ring true to this day.

You might not understand it’s meaning, but a meaning will be made immediately in your mind

for which you decide its value or worth. The same can be said for any image, really.

It’s the simple power we all possess –

To think. To be. To believe. To see.
