{January 22} Isn’t It Byronic? Happy Birthday LORD BYRON!

“Death, so called, is a thing which makes men weep, And yet a third of life is passed in sleep.”

-Lord Byron: George Gordon Byron {6th Baron Byron}

ON THIS DAY, SOME MIGHT SAY. . .

A GENIUS

was born.

Others may just call him a MAD MAN.

+LORD BYRON+

–+Lord Byron {Jan 22 1788 – April 19 1824}+–

Byronic [ bahy-ron-ik ]

adjective
  • of or relating to Lord Byron.
  • possessing the characteristics of Byron or his poetry, especially romanticism, melancholy, and melodramatic energy.

Regarded as one of the most important English poets, as well as a leader of the Romantic Movement of the early 19th Century. . . he was a revolutionary in the Greek War of Independence, a politician, as well as a major celebrity of the time!

Indeed, before Beatlemania – there was “BYRONMANIA”, as described by his own wife Annabella. Self-aware to the max, and huge proponent of personal promotion- his celebrity was equivalent to that of a modern day rock star of the time.

As an Aquarius, it is no surprise that he was extremely odd and eccentric about certain things. He had a fascination for the macabre and stories tell of him having a coffin at the dining table of his family’s Gothic manor, as well as collecting the skulls of animals which he proudly displayed in an enormous shooting gallery. He also loved to drink out of a monkey skull turned into an elaborate chalice…so they say.

His antics were legendary, however, as much as he enjoyed the spotlight, he retired to a self imposed exile from Britain later in his life. . . how Byronic.

He knew himself a villain—but he deem’d
The rest no better than the thing he seem’d;
And scorn’d the best as hypocrites who hid
Those deeds the bolder spirit plainly did.
He knew himself detested, but he knew
The hearts that loath’d him, crouch’d and dreaded too.
Lone, wild, and strange, he stood alike exempt
From all affection and from all contempt:

“The Corsair” (1814) by Lord Byron

“I love not man the less, but Nature more”

-Lord Byron: George Gordon Byron {6th Baron Byron}

One of the most outrageous things the notorious playboy did in his life, you will get a kick out of!

Back in the 1800s, it was quite customary for lovers to keep mementos of their love of letters, drawings, even a lock of hair – however, Byron took this to the extreme and kept clippings of each lovers pubic hairs and kept them in labeled envelopes in his library for safe keeping…

Now that’s Byronic!

{also…AQUARIUS, much?}

PARIS IS BURNING: Notre Dame Saved By Fashion?

In this image made available on Tuesday April 16, 2019 flames and smoke rise from the blaze at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, Monday, April 15, 2019. An inferno that raged through Notre Dame Cathedral for more than 12 hours destroyed its spire and its roof but spared its twin medieval bell towers, and a frantic rescue effort saved the monument’s “most precious treasures,” including the Crown of Thorns purportedly worn by Jesus, officials said Tuesday. (AP Photo/Thierry Mallet)

To say it was a shock to glance at the breaking news on April 15 to see Notre Dame engulfed in blazing hellfire. With the world already feeling so hopelessly derelict, seeing this sight was a surreal feeling…what is happening in this world?!

Oddly enough, this event has occurred at the beginning of Holy Week leading to Easter – the most important week for the Christian church, without a doubt. Interestingly, we also have Venus and Lilith meeting at the 23rd mark of Pisces on this day…Venus, the goddess of love, and Lilith, the rebellious first wife of Adam; who refused to be subservient and was cast out of the Garden of Eden.

Notre Dame quite literally means “Our Lady”, and its impossible to ignore the rise of female power in our society- in arts, politics, business, and with the Church imposing its patriarchal grip of society for thousands of years, perhaps this could be some fateful symbol we all may never understand fully.

{Click here for more intriguing astrological interpretation of this fateful event}

On the flip side, it didn’t take long for France’s three richest families to raise money for its restoration post-fire; a whopping $700 million in total.

The three dynasties (LVMH, L’Oreal, and Kering) have an impressive portfolio of high end luxury brans that they own- being pretty much every high end fashion brand you can think of. For instance, LVMH headed by CEO Bernard Arnault has put forward $226 million! For the owner of an endless list of brands such as Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Fendy, Dior, Hennessy, and even Fenty Beauty by Rihanna to name a few, so it surely seems almost like it would be pocket change.

The other large donors were the Betterncourt Meyers family who control L’Oreal, and the Pinaut family who own Kering which control iconic luxury brands such as Gucci, Saint-Laurent, Balenziaga, and Alexander McQueen to name a few…

Surely, they are toasting over a glass of Veuve Cliquot over their charitable efforts, but this kind of thing is exactly what gives fashion a bad name, and doesn’t really help to battle the idea that fashion isn’t vapid, vain, and wasteful.

Granted, Notre Dame wasn’t just a treasure of France, but also the entire world. Paris is the number one tourist destination in the world, and the beautiful Gothic Cathedral with is iconic towers, and flying buttresses reaching out into the Seine, it is (or was) a marvel of human endeavour, engineering, and creativity, no doubt. 856 years, and a bit damage, sure, but its still standing.

With our world in the state of crisis (climate change, increasing poverty, always an imminent war) there couldn’t be more available resources to help those truly in need? A medieval church is one thing, but the fact that certain people in this world have every mean necessary to truly make a difference to people, is shocking and disappointing to say the least. Especially, that these brands uphold and sell a lifestyle that 99% of us could never afford, and only fantasize about being a part of – you begin to realize the illusion of luxury, and the many people whose backs these brands have been built on.

This is all a bit of what led us into what we do. Outrageous prices, bad quality, and who even knows what goes on BTS…for what? Just a knock-off a vintage style or design, when billions of pounds of textiles and clothing are put into landfills every year! If we can’t universally accept the concept of reducing, reusing, and recycling what we already have, the future could be grim.

Amazingly, 16 year old environmental activist, and recent Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, made a poignant statement regarding the fire, and the pledges that are being made to rebuild the monument whilst no changes are being pledged to save our own planet. Greta Thunberg’s thoughts on “cathedral thinking” are truly inspiring…

It seems like this is an event that may have opened up all our eyes a bit, and definitely encourages us to continue our own crusade! If fashion can save Notre Dame, could they switch gears to save the world?

Much to ponder…but,

Until next time,

DING DONG CHARLIE MANSON IS DEAD!

We’re not in Wonderland anymore Alice

-Charles Manson

Maybe we can all sleep a little more sound knowing that yesterday marked the passing of one of the world’s most notorious criminals – Charles Manson.

Infamous for bringing a dark turn to 1969’s Summer of Love co-ordinating a string of horrific murders in the Hollywood Hills of 7 highly influential and well-to-do victims including the heiress to the Folger coffee fortune, owners of a successful grocery chain, and iconic beauty – actress and model Sharon Tate.

You could say 8 victims total if you include that Tate was pregnant.

While he never committed any of the murders with his own hand – there is little doubt that his cult-like hold on his followers was so powerful that he was able to control and manipulate seemingly ordinary people to do some of the world’s most vicious atrocities using his strange magnetic quality, and the help of psychedelics like LSD.

{THROWBACK: “The Night Roger Sterling took LSD with Angela’s Mom from ‘My So Called Life’}

The three women also charged in the murders have all given chilling accounts of the murders, as well as the hold Charlie had over them.

{read Susan Atkin’s account of the murders from December 14, 1969}

And whilst Manson and his black witches were put away, they were spared the death penalty when it was deemed unconstitutional in California in 1972- Manson still garnered countless followers and fans who worshipped the man like a God. Most recently he was even engaged to a 20-something woman named Star, only later to call it off when it was revealed to him that their relationship was a ploy to acquire his body and set up a Lenin-esque tomb in Los Angeles after his death to make money.

All across the internet you can buy merch featuring his face and words, countless best-selling books about the man, his cult, and their crimes, successful feature films, and even an NBC series ‘Aquarius’ featuring the handsome Gethin Anthony as the cult-leader.

Most recently the popular FX series American Horror Story featured a scene in their latest season ‘CULT’ depicting Evan Peters telling his own followers about the legend of Charles Manson and the murders that incited his revolution. This episode aired only less than two weeks before his death, in a strange twist of fate with Peters also doubling as Manson, and series stars Sarah Paulson, Bilie Lourd, and Leslie Grossman as Susan “Sexy Sadie” Atkins, Linda Kasabian (granted immunity for her testimony at the trial), and Patricia Krenwinkle – California’s longest serving female prisoner.

Personally it felt a bit like a gross glamorization of a horrific act, and a bit of a gratuitous showcase of violence (which is very AHS these days), and the thought that these twisted fuckers could get any kind of glorification from something like this was disgusting.

We’ll post it here, and let you decide:

Then it was announced that Charles Manson was dead, and somehow it seemed like a door had been closed on all that, and maybe we can feel good that some strange twisted energy has been depleted from this world.

Or maybe, its only out there running rampant looking for its next conduit….either way:

Ding Dong Charles Manson is DEAD!

We collected some fascinating headlines from the murders and trials, and thought they made for a unique visual of the horror and terror these seemingly simple-minded and harmless people brought onto this world.

His legacy will live on for better or worse, and if there is one thing we can learn from Manson is that evil truly does exist in this world, and we can never underestimate its reach. He may have indeed incited some kind of wickedness when you consider all the messed up things that have begun to avalanche in our society.

 Also, never underestimate a starving artist scorned!

From the world of darkness I did loose demons and devils in the power of scorpions to torment.

+RARE+ JUDY GARLAND’S ‘VALLEY OF THE DOLLS’ WARDROBE SCREEN TEST

We love Valley of the Dolls…

And we love the myth and legend of Judy Garland, so to discover this rare gem on the interwebs, was to say the least, a huge score!

If you haven’t seen the film, “Valley of the Dolls” was based on Jacqueline Susann’s best selling novel about several young ladies entrapped in the tumultuous world of the entertainment industry.

It is camp, it is glamour, it is a bona fide classic piece of cinema starring the late Patty Duke as the self-sabotaging but talented Neely O’Hara, Barbara Perkins playing a naive small town girl trying to make it in the big city of New York, and Sharon Tate as their gorgeous pal who is forced to do some “shameful” business to make a little cash . . .

One of the antagonists of the film is the character of Helen Lawson, who is a big-shot Broadway star of the ages who Neely goes up to bat against during the production of a play. There are plenty of bitchy moments that incur, which make the film a true joy to behold.

With this in mind, we were shocked the find out that Helen Lawson had originally been given to none other than JUDY GARLAND!!!

This was big news at the time, with the contract being signed February 1967, and a press conference with Judy and Jacqueline Susann at the St. Regis Hotel on March 2, 1967.

“Lets face it; the role calls for an old pro over 40. That’s for me. It’s for sure I am no longer Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz…the part of Helen Lawson is no more me than the part in Judgement at Nuremberg. It doesn’t pertain to me…”

{source}

Work on the film began shortly thereafter with songs being recorded, and scenes being shot. However, many of this footage hasn’t survived, and many claim the scenes that were shot were few and far between and mostly unusable, with Judy refusing to leave her dressing room.

Things reached a head on April 27, 1967.  Judy was fired.

Fox announced that she had resigned for “personal reasons”, which Judy quickly denied citing that she had showed up on set ready to film at 6am and had no idea!!! In the end, she admitted to objecting to certain obscenities in the film, and many fans agree that this film was far beneath her talents….so in the end, everything works out (I guess, minus the fact she died 2 years later from a heavy drug overdose)!!!

Oh, Hollywood….so strange. So weird. So mysterious and odd. And if you’re wondering what I’m talking about, lets get to the point of this all – the wardrobe tests!

You know we love fashion and style, and William Travilla’s glorious designs for Valley of the Dolls are one of the highlights of this film, and Helen Lawson’s costumes are no exception. In these clips, Judy does her thing showing off the designs, as only she could.

If that doesn’t shock you just a little, I’m not sure what will.  The legacy of Judy Garland is so odd and sad. So young and full of talent; thrown into a monstrous machine that only cared to crank out dollars from her…in the end, she lost her vitality, and her mind.

Let her be a lesson to us all to stay true to yourself, and never be a pawn to those in authority. It’s just not worth it. You live one life. Let it be the best life you can imagine!

In the end, the role of Helen Lawson would go to Susan Hayward, who was a legend in her own right, and had even won the coveted Best Actress Academy Award in 1958 playing a death row inmate in I Want to Live!

I guess, things happen for a reason..

YOU, ME, AND ANGELYNE! L.A. ICON’S TRUE IDENTITY REVEALED!

Everyone knows Angelyne.

A staple of Los Angeles culture, and a precursor to the “famous for being famous” antics of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian; this mysterious blonde bombshell exploded in the 80s with the wish to be famous. You can’t miss her wild billboards or that sexy pink corvette. Even if you don’t know her name – you know here. Trust me. You do!

I love the term Hollyweird, and Angelyne definitely lives up to Los Angeles’ reputation for eclectic characters and unbelievable tales of transformation.

Always a lady of mystery…not much has ever been known about her; The real her, at least.

Most of the time, you can’t make up stories as intriguing and mind rousing as simply searching for the truth. That’s exactly what Gary Baum chronicles in his latest article for The Hollywood Reporter which has got the internet buzzing!

+CLICK HERE TO READ THIS AWESOME ARTICLE+

While, I feel a little sad that her mystique has been stripped away, there’s no denying that we are only going to experience an even bigger renaissance of Angelyne and all her bright pink glory.

I wonder how she feels about all this? There are many paparazzi videos of her on the internet, and she seems to hate that kind of attention. Either way, this article does not detract from her legacy as a patron saint of Hollywood….

Everything about her IS Hollywood. The dream to be a star. To be worshipped. Iconized. And of course…the fakery of it all. It’s not a bad thing. I think its empowering to be able to be whoever you want to be.

And that’s why she remains a hero to so many people. In fact, we had posted the original article on our FACEBOOK page (GIVE US A LIKE for cool stories, inspirations, and updates), and we
got a lot of response! I had promised a few people I would share this crazy documentary on Angelyne I had found while perusing the depths of Youtube, so thought why not just feature it on our site!

Angelyne definitely has a place here at The Eye of Faith. She is mysterious, enigmatic, beautiful, rebellious, independent, weird, and definitely has a singular sense of self that people would only ever even dream to attain.

Angelyne is still alive and well today and pushing her persona to the max, so do her a favour and follow her on Instagram! I was absolutely shocked at how little followers she has on there! So don’t waste the moment, people!

+FOLLOW HER HERE+

Above all else, I feel like Angelyne represents the magic of the feminine. The mystique a woman can harness and use as power in their life. From nothing to something….that’s magic, in itself.

O ‘MOTHER!’, WHERE ART THOU?

A couple daze ago, the poster for Darren Aronofsky’s newest film ‘Mother!’ dropped, and it has the internet spinning.

The plot is shrouded in secrecy, with not much about it being revealed except a few vague sentences. Here’s what wikipedia says:

A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.

Leaves a lot to the imagination, but I guess Aronofsky just knows the power of mystery!

The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Kristen Wiig!!!

Whatever it ends up being, we have been itching for another psychological thriller a la Black Swan and perhaps Mother! can truly deliver! Perhaps it will even deliver J-Law her second Oscar? Only time will tell…

You know we love linking {present} day visuals to the {past}, so we couldn’t help but perceive the remarkable similarities to the aesthetic of sure-fire style diva Frida Kahlo!

There’s some kind of resemblance….the heart, the botanicals, even the gore! So Frida!

The Mother! poster was designed by Taiwanese artist James JeanMother! opens in theatres October 13, 2017  – so stay tuned!

Who knows what kind of musings this film will expose the world to . . .

WTF?! THIS EXACT MOMENT 105 YEARS AGO . . . APRIL 14, 1912

The R.M.S. Titanic hits an iceberg and the 20th Century will never be the same.

Imagine how different 1997 would have been without this megalith of a movie hitting the screens?We might not even have the same Kate or Leo we have today?! Winter of 1997/98 wouldn’t have been consumed by 12 theatre viewings of “TITANIC”!!!

We shudder to think . . .

+TITANIC 4 LIFE +

On a serious note; I’m not sure what it is about this majestic ship that has always captured my imagination. I’m guessing its a mixture of the Edwardian elegance, decadence, and grandeur of the ship – the microcosm of society contained within it – and the hubris of the upper echelon whose powers control the world to this day, and the tragedy that ensued as a result.

There are many many many fascinating details regarding this ship, but perhaps the most stimulating aspect of the Titanic’s untimely fate is that it was predicted 14 years earlier by a pulp novella entitled The Wreck of the Titan: Or, Futility which I was lucky to read before the film had even been in production.

Talk about psychic premonitions; author Morgan Robertson (also the self proclaimed inventor of the periscope) chillingly predicts much of the Titanic’s destiny with his fictional telling of an enormous “unsinkable” triple screw British luxury ocean liner named the S.S. TITAN  which meets its untimely demise on a cold April night in the North Atlantic after it hits an iceberg losing almost everyone on board due to a lack of lifeboats.

{click here to read the rundown of similarities between the TITANIC and TITAN}

CRAZY, RIGHT?! This is 14 years before the infamous disaster! Designs for Titanic‘s sister ship didn’t even go into production until 1908. How was it that Morgan Robertson could right a tale so shockingly similar to the Titanic’s actual events. Was he psychic? Was it planned?

TIME TRAVEL???

The whole thing is absolutely incredible, and definitely worth looking more into.

We wanted to start right out with the juice on this one, and take us straight into Part 2 of this disturbing segment from 20/20 back over 20 years ago. “The Exorcism” was the very first time the controversial rites of exorcism had ever been documented and aired on network television causing quite the stir.

20 years later the footage is as raw and disturbing as ever. Definitely beats the crap out of the Horror they try to feed you today. This kind of evil only exists in the twisted realms of our own reality.

Forget what you’ve seen – real life is always better {scarier}.

Question is: What do you believe?

Could the young 16 year old girl seriously be possessed by evil souls living deep in her body, or is this a battle of her rebellious teenage subconscious? This timeless battle between science and religion is carefully crafted by ABC correspondent Tom Jarriell with vintage appearances by the show’s anchors Hugh Downs, and the always stylin’ Barbara Walters.

Baby, Let’s Cruise Away From Here. . . GUCCI Men’s Cruise 2017

Gucci Cruise 2017 at Westminster Abbey, London {May, 2016}

“I chose Westminster Abbey because everyone has this idea of London being cool, but for me the history is what’s really cool.”

-Alessandro Michele {source}

Gucci-Cruise-Men-2017-1

Check out this righteous collection of photographs from Nick Waplington of the menswear in Alessandro Michele’s triumphant 2017 Cruise collection for GUCCI making another landmark in style for the classic Italian high fashion brand, and what is being known as another groundbreaker in the area of men’s fashion and style.

The inspirations are vast and varied ( spot turn of the century collegiate vibes, 80s punks, 90s street couture, 1920s leisurewear, 70s bohemian playboys, 50s varsity jocks,  19th century naturalists, Edo Japan, and more ), and its this exciting eclecticism that is putting Michele at the forefront of truly changing the way we look at specifically men’s fashion, which for the most part has become a sea of black, beige, and boring.

Our motto has always been ‘more is more’, and we’re happy to have such a prestigious like mind in our corner on the matter. If you are unfamiliar with the new GUCCI vibe, this collection of portraits will not only be getting you a taste, but you will truly understand what all the buzz is about. Taken almost portrait style, the loud and eccentric looks are jarringly juxtaposed against the backdrop of a stately English country home like a tribe of wanderlusting young men who had just conquered the Old World and are setting forth establishing the New.

Gucci-Cruise-Men-2017-73

This is a new voice, yes; and yet, much of what we see isn’t necessarily “new” in any way, in fact, as we pointed out with the mass of inspirations colliding in this collection, its a true example of taking from the {past} to invigorate the {present} and thus poising change for the {future} …

“The men’s wardrobe is like a ritual and I am fascinated by it and its codes. The codes are not to be cancelled, they have to be reinvented and repositioned in a different fresco. There is the part of formalwear which I consider like the father of all the different styles. There are some punk pieces which are the most romantic part of the collection. When you are punk you are romantic, because you want to break the rules. And then there is the preppy/street part which recalls college-wear and is thought for more relaxed moments. Each of these parts has its own codes and, as always, I enjoyed putting a sort of confusion among the different codes and languages.”

-Alessandro Michele {source}

We have always felt like fashion and style is like a secret society full of codes and rules and symbols that all add up to create greater meaning . . . like geomancy, the way you mix and match elements have different suggestions and powers. If you are wise, you can use these powers to your advantage in your day-to-day, and even make great strides in following your path to destiny.

Through Alessandro Michele’s meticulous orchestration, and continuing success in the fashion industry, be sure to check out the change that is ready to explode in our everyday! Just look around . . .

After looking through the photographs, I’m sure you will notice the sense of individualism achieved in this collection which is a funny thing to say, when a collection is usually thought of as a wholly distinct and cohesive mass, however, what Michele knows is that there will be dozens of different men who in their daily lives belong to whichever tribe  (suits, shorts, bohos, rock n rollers, geeks, streets, etc.) and having such an eclectic array provides the greatest cohesion amongst men.

Also, note the artisanal quality of each piece. This not the same GUCCI that you find horrible knock-offs of in Chinatown . . . these are truly thought out works of art. From the embroidery, to the hand painting, to the beading, bleaching, patchwork, knitwear; each piece has a true artist quality that renders the price tags not even as devastating when you think of the work involved, as well as the increasing value throughout time.

Even with all the embellishment, at the end of the day you are looking at classic and timeless pieces. If you check out our {SHOP} you can find a lot of style-wise pieces that can help you achieve the look!

How to Cook a Unicorn!

EOF- How to cook a Unicorn

“Taketh one unicorne . . .”

Talk about secret knowledge! It seems scholars are absolutely ecstatic to find a long lost Medieval cookbook that includes recipes and instructions for cooking Unicorns!

The book was uncovered by The British Library, and contains hundreds of recipes for classical Medieval dishes that include herring, tripe, fish stews, and pigeon, as well as a delicious recipe for black bird pie – just like the nursery rhyme!

Sing a song of sixpence

A pocket full of rye

 Four-and-twenty blackbirds

Baked in a pie.

But among the most interesting of the dishes presented in the beautifully illuminated pages of the book they believe dates back to the 14th Century, is a most peculiar instruction for the preparation of Unicorn, complete with pictures!

EOF- How to Cook a Unicorn 2

The recipe begins appropriately with the phrase “Taketh one unicorne” and continues to instruct the cook to take the meat of the beast and marinate in cloves and garlic and then roast it on the griddle. I think I want seconds, already!

Scholars believe the cookbook was written by famed chef of the moment, Geoffrey Fule, who served as the chef to Philippa of Hainault, Queen of England (1328-1369). Was this all just a jest? Or, could there be some truth to the matter?

Most people assume that Unicorns are only a myth, but perhaps those beautiful ponies with their majestic horns really did roam freely through the lands. Story goes that the unicorn’s horn holds magical properties that could cleanse poisoned waters and render the sick able again. Of course, you could only find them using a virgin. She would wander the forests until the unicorn, smelling the scent of virgin flesh, would greet her with his big hard spiralled horn . . .

LAST UNICORN

Today the unicorn has been reduced to the world animated child fantasy and nursery rhymes, but thousands of years ago, the Ancient Greeks didn’t just believe in the creatures as mythical beings, but as full fledge creatures which they studied and recorded in their natural history texts. We can also find mentions of the animal and its supernatural strength in various books of The Bible.

So, I guess the mystery is just bound to live on. Perhaps Fule was just using his imagination, and jotting down his ideas for a “What-if” kind of situation, but with all that heavy illuminating (which would take months on end), its hard to believe there wouldn’t have been a specific need for a Unicorn recipe. Also note that “COOKING” as we know it today, was much more of a magical and mystical art, especially in the Medieval times and Renaissance; an art that would run parallel to that of alchemy and other sacred knowledge practices.

Many grimoires from the same period will contain recipes for food alongside the details to invocating spirits, so perhaps Fule was not only a reputable chef, but was somewhat of a magician, who knew secrets, such as where to source Unicorn, and the advantages and benefits to eating it . . .

EOF- How to Cook A Unicorn 3

The idea of eating a unicorn definitely is kind of gross, but I’m sure with the proper preparation it would be tolerable – or just skip the meal and steal the horn from the kitchen wench. Did they once cook Unicorn meat for the King & Queens of England?  It’s still a toss-up for me. What do YOU think?

You can read more at The British Library website!
