{STYLE WISE} ANTONIONI’S “ZABRISKIE POINT” +BLOW IT UP!!!+

Our latest addition to the altar of E.O.F. {STYLE IDOLS & DIVINITIES) was the impossibly stunning Mark Frechette, whose stardom originates as the handsome hero of Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 counter-culture cult classic Zabriskie Point.

We thought it apropos to delve into the fantastic and fundamental stylish-ness of this poignant and severely under-rated film.

Whilst the flower power movement is mostly seen as Woodstock, flower children dancing in parks, peace, love, and rainbows – the counter-culture movement that began to arise from the horrors of the Vietnam War and injustices in America was also an aggressive and violent force ready for radical change.

Parties like The Weathermen, Baader Meinhoff, and the Black Panthers fought for revolutionary change from the capitalist bourgeoise regimes that still run the world to this day.

Much the way Antonioni’s fashionable masterpiece Blow-Up captured the Swinging London of the mid-60s in his chic docu-stylized manner, Zabriskie Point aimed to shed light on this particular moment in time.

The film even features a cameo by THE political power-force and activist Kathleen Cleaver (who is also very due to be inaugurated to the rank of E.O.F. DIVINITY}!

The turbulently good-looking Mark Ferchette plays Mark, an armed student radical on the run from the cops.

While flying an airplane over the desert he spots Daria Halprin who plays Daria, a gorgeous bohemian goddess who may or may not have a thing for wealthy older business execs, and they engage in an erotic (and dusty) desert orgy.

Whilst a desert orgy might seem like a tried and true climax for any film- the real climax drifts dreamily to Daria’s increasing discomfort and disgust over bourgeoise attempts to redevelop the gorgeous Mojave desert.

What follows this moment of realization is a fantastical finale that tells a thousand thoughts, statements, and poetic musings through the universality of cinema.

This final moment cannot be denied.

SPOILER ALERT!

{WATCH THE FINALE BELOW}

If you watched the clip, you can see why Zabriskie Point  is really fuelling our psych-rock summer.

Would have to recommend musing over the desert love scene, if you’re in the romantic mood . . .

And whether you’re in it to take in all the timelessly cool/counter-culture chic/boho American stylings of costume designer Ray Summers or the epic psych-rock soundtrack that features a theme song by Roy Orbison, and tracks by the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, The Youngbloods, Patti Page, and the ultimate Pink Floyd– this film is ICONIC in every right!!!

Interestingly, both of the films stars were non-actors who both appeared in exactly three films.

Mark Ferchette was a carpenter discovered during a loud argument on the streets of Boston where he allegedly threw a flower pot at a woman, while Daria Halprin was spotted by Antonioni in the Jack O’Connell documentary ‘Revolution‘ which profiled the counter-culture movement in San Francisco.

The two make for a beautiful All-American bohemian brunette couple, whose enigmatic bond is as mysterious as it is inspiring…

They gained the status of the first counter-culture couple, and actually maintained a real life romance, which later led to them getting a string of magazine covers, TV appearances, and even joining a cult together.

After all, a couple that joins a cult together stays together!

”It put me in a kind of lifestyle and situation that in many, many ways I wasn’t ready to deal with,”

-Daria Halprin

Halprin would later leave the Fort Hill Community that was founded by musician Mel Lyman, who was known as the Charles Manson o the East Coast,  while Ferchette was arrested for armed robbery and died in prison from a weightlifting accident joining the notorious Dead at 27 crew.

Whilst the film garnered lack lustre reviews at the time for its meandering plot and docu-surrealism which may have just been a little too ahead of its time.

{watch it now}

But, that’s what’s great about exploring the {PAST} you have the opportunity of looking at it through the lens of the {PRESENT} and hopefully keep the dialogue going into the {FUTURE}.

In a world as messed up today (if not more than)- a film like Zabriskie Point is a fearless reminder of the people who almost 50 years ago cried for change, the timelessness of true style, and the dreaminess of the desert . . .

Where did this courage and fight go in our day to day? Have we really been brainwashed to believe everything will be OK?

Sometimes it feels like you just might pull a Daria, too?

Talk about American beauty . . . do yourself a favour and watch this film!

Because the Sky is Blue it Makes Me Cry!!! ‘VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS’ TRAILER {Luc Besson, Supermodels, and Rihanna OH MY!}

Luc Besson,
Supermodels,
and Rihanna
OH MY!

In case you didn’t know, trailers have been dropping for Luc Besson‘s latest visual masterpiece “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” which stars burgeoning stars Dean DaHanne and the supermodel who continues to break the mould (as well as continually be a major bad ass)- Ms. Cara Delevingne.

Based on the French comic series first published in 1967 and reappearing again in 2010, Valérian and Laureline ; the trailer is full of astounding moments that dazzle the eyes (that PALETTE, though?!) and are all the more amplified by the surge of emotions provided by the addition of the very first original recording by the Beatles to ever appear in a movie trailer!

Sounds like a big feat, but apparently all it took was for Luc Besson to ask Paul McCartney himself.

I just asked! We reached out to Paul McCartney, and he asked, ‘What is the film?’ and then he said yes! I never met him – I wish I could, to thank him. From what I heard, he’s seen a couple of my films…There is a vibe that I think, from what I heard, made him say, ‘For this one, because it’s at least new and fresh.’ So I think that he likes that. He likes to be part of something new.” {source}

While the French director certainly isn’t a stranger to the genre of science fiction, count on today’s advances in technology breaking the walls down for true aesthetic mastery, much the same way he did years ago with the stellar 90s masterpiece “THE FIFTH ELEMENT“!

I mean, who can forget that DIVA MOMENT!!!

OH, and have you spotted HER yet?

According to most conspiracy websites, the Queen of Witches herself: RI RI , GOOD GIRL GONE BAD , MISS SUNSHINE . . . RIHANNA where you at?

{STYLE WISE} Wild for Kicks! ‘Beat Girl’Est Tres Chic!

Wildforkickssoundtrack

From the cusp of 1960’s culture came a film documenting wild teen tomfoolery and squaller.  Daughter of local divorced architect father, was born Jenny; an impressionably sexy young woman who falls into the towns scene of beatnik culture and electric youth.

When Jenny’s divorced father Paul marries a Parisian woman named Nichole, Jenny’s distaste for the new woman in her life is immediate.  Her now ‘mother’ is not much older than vibrant Jenny which infuriates the teased haired beauty.  In a tit for tat attempt to expose Nichole’s seedy past, Jenny begins a journey into the dark side that is deeper than she could ever have planned for.  Discovering Nichole’s root’s in the unsavoury night scene abound with strippers and rock’n roll, Jenny is determined to undermine and manipulate Nichole to get whatever the fuck she wants.  Bad girl antics ensue while attracting the attention of Kenny, owner of the dance hall.

Full of cheese-ball rebels and hot girls this flick from 1960 delivers action and vulgarity.  We surely recommend this one if you are in the mood for a badass black and white.  We know we can never get enough of greaser culture and faster kill pussycats, this flick may just get you to buy a leather jacket and bleach your hair platinum blonde… but we suggest avoiding games of ‘chicken’ despite the peer pressure.

Until next time,

STYLE {WISE} Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922)

HŠxan (1922) Filmografinr: 1922/06

Poor little hysterical witch! In the middle ages you were in conflict with the church. Now it is with the law.

Title Card: “Häxan (1922)”

We really ought to be saving this one for our own private inspiration board, but a higher wisdom has urged us to share.  We swear!

This sinisterly beautiful Style {WISE} is from the archives of cinema history. Back to the days of the silent film, where the power of imagery ruled supreme.

haxan devils

The film is the 1922 Pseudo Documentary Art-House Horror Silent Classic, Häxan (pronounced “hek-sen”). Imaginations soared through creative interpretations of alleged real-life events right up through to the early twentieth century.  The Swedish Film was directed, written, and starring Benjamin Christensen as the Devil himself.

Ultimately  comparing the hysteria of contemporary (1921) women with the behaviour of the witches in the Middle Ages; the film concludes that they are very similar. Hey, we never said a peep! {click here for more}

haxan2-1

Title Card: Centuries have passed and the Almighty of medieval times no longer sits in his tenth sphere.

Title Card: We no longer sit in church staring terrified at the frescoes of the devils.

Title Card: The witch no longer flies away on her broom over the rooftops.

Title Card: But isn’t superstition still rampant among us?

Title Card: Is there an obvious difference between the sorceress and her customer then and now?

Title Card: We no longer burn our old and poor. But do they not often suffer bitterly?

Title Card: And the little woman, whom we call hysterical, alone and unhappy, isn’t she still a riddle for us?

Title Card: Nowadays we detain the unhappy in a mental institution or – if she is wealthy – in a modern clinic.

Title Card: And then we will console ourselves with the notion that the mildly temperate shower of the clinic has replaced the barbaric methods of medieval times.

Häxan (1922)

haxan

What’s most fascinating is the way they amp up the already iconic images we have in our mind when we turn our thoughts to the idea of witchcraft, the frenzy of the medieval times, and the rugged decay of the Medieval Times. All these elements are intensified and, almost glamourized, for the silver screen in a way only the 1920s could make happen.

Wouldn’t it be great to  see more powerful imagery like this come to the forefront today, while still staying beautiful ? Perhaps some of you beauties will find some inspiration to take with you after your visit here with The Eye of Faith.

Witchcraft through the Ages (1922 Sweden) aka Haxan Documentary

Häxan: Witchcraft through the ages, is a true experience for the eyes and ears,  with music beautifully composed by Emil Reesen.

Seemingly a silent horror sensation, but truly a documentation of modern man.

So much faith is thrown into the blind eyes of God, as fellow man takes judgement and punishment upon himself.

#RiotClub – Secret Society Style Prevails Yet Again!

Cast of The Riot Club- Secret Society Style- The Eye of Faith

They don’t know when to stop . . .

It’s as if they tapped into our brains with this one!

“Riot Club” is the latest film from British director Lone Scherfig who last brought us a vintage style feast in 2009’s “An Education”.

The film is a fictionalized vision based on the salacious modus operandi of the notorious Bullingdon Club, who came to the forefront of the media’s gaze in the 1980s as they trashed their way through some of England’s finest establishments. The most shocking aspect of their antics was that the band of bad asses were actually some of British society’s finest bred.

the bullingdon club

(1) the Hon. Edward Sebastian Grigg [the BBC Pension Trust sub-contractor and former SCREAM snuff-film director for Goldman Sachs], the heir to Baron Altrincham of Tormarton and current chairman of Credit Suisse (UK)
(2) David Cameron
(3) Ralph Perry Robinson, a former child actor, designer, furniture-maker
(4) Ewen Fergusson, son of the British ambassador to France, Sir Ewen Fergusson and now at City law firm Herbert Smith
(5) Matthew Benson, the heir to the Earldom of Wemyss and March
(6) Sebastian James, the son of Lord Northbourne, a major landowner in Kent
(7) Jonathan Ford, the-then president of the club, a banker with Morgan Grenfell
(8) Boris Johnson, the-then president of the Oxford Union, now Lord Mayor of London
9) Harry Eastwood, the investment fund consultant

Based on the play Posh by Laura Wade, the film delves into the manic musings of the centuries old club which resided within the historic confines of Oxford University, and the psychology of privilege that prevailed in the minds of the club’s most esteemed members.

Many members of the Bullingdon Club would go on to become some of England’s most powerful and influential politicians and businessmen including Prime Minister David Cameron, British ambassador to France Sir Ewen Fergusson, Jonathan Ford and Boris Johnson. Some of the club’s legendary members included King Edward VII, King Edward VIII, Cecil Rhodes, Nathaniel Rothschild, and Gottfried von Bismarck!

Makes you think . . .

Needless to say, after watching the trailer for the film, we are psyched as ever to see the story of the Buller boys come to life! We love to see that secret society style truly is making its way to the forefront!

After all, everyday in life we encounter secret societies. Whether they be clubs or members only parties, or just the secret conversations with have with our friends and family – they are all the same. It’s that bond that keeps us all together in the end, and no matter how hard we try, we cannot escape wanting to feel like we belong to something exclusively ours.

This is the truth.

Can’t wait!

“I don’t think an evening would have ended without a restaurant being trashed and being paid for in full, very often in cash. […] A night in the cells would be regarded as being par for a Buller man and so would debagging anyone who really attracted the irritation of the Buller men.”

Andrew Grimson, biographer of Boris Johnson on the Bullingdon Club in the 1980s

Satanic Possession in Archie Comics – Sabrina the Teenage Exorcist!

We are always in a nostalgic mood when it comes to our evening reading. Infact, we love delving into a quant story from Riverdale!  Homeland of our favourite group of teenagers, the Archie’s and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, along with Josie and the Pussycat and so many other fictitious characters.  Now …what would it take to bring us a story of true captivity.. and wonder?? Perhaps it would add some excitement with the addition of The Devil.
Well perhaps is no true reason as to why, but why on earth would a children’s publishing company come up with a plot line involving satanic possession?? Naturally, the Exorcist made QUITE the splash upon it’s release at the time.  We reckon the Comic publishing company only meant to make thing’s a little more exciting.  And we say.. it worked!  With plot-lines normally consisting of ‘what to wear to the beach’ or ‘who wants to meet for a sundae’, we here at The Eye of Faith are very entertained by a tale of an Evil Cameo Pendant which carries a Evil Curse.  Big Up’ to one of our FAVOURITE retro sources online RetroSpace for posting this amazing story.

We have to admit our genuine amusement as we read this comic.  We hope you guys get a kick too!! Even if this was all done to get some of the Exorcist’s hype, we say kudo’s… kudo’s to teaching kids the importance of the Bible and expelling any evil within.

Rebel Without a Cause: The Exploits of Patricia Hearst

“Around 9 o’clock in the evening on February 4, 1974, there was a knock on the door of apartment #4 at 2603 Benvenue Street in Berkeley, California. In burst a group of men and women with their guns drawn. They grabbed a surprised 19-year-old college student named Patty Hearst, beat up her fiancé, threw her in the trunk of their car and drove off.”

-Federal Bureau of Investigation

It’s been over 10 years since the charges against publishing heiress Lydia Hearst were officially pardoned. The world would rock and shake in 1974 with news that the granddaughter of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst had been kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army- dangerous domestic terrorists who had proclaimed war on the United States of America- creating an instant sensation across the Nation.

“I was horrified and I’m still horrified.”

Patty would be driven to extremes while held in captivity, where she was ultimately brainwashed into joining her captors. In fact, thirty plus years later, Patty has become the pop cultural icon for Stockholm Syndrome.

When you see the surveillance photos of the young mousy heiress screaming at customers at Hibernia Bank holding her own assault weapons- she definitely looks the part, a poster child for the revolution. Very ‘Prada Meinhoff’ – radical chic. “California Heiress renounces her blood lines and wants to fight for freedom”- SENSATION!

Hearst Castle, San Simeon CA.

The brainwashing would also lead her to drop the Patty and become “Tania” (OK?).

Patty would go through hell and back being the only member of the SLA who would be put on trial for the crimes. Talk about sensationalism. Having gone through physical and sexual abuse, as well as typical signs of “Stockholm Syndrome” prevelant, Hearst would serve 22 months in prison before being released by President Jimmy Carter February 1, 1979.

We can only imagine the emotions Patty went through then, and to this day. How different could this young beauty’s life have been?

Fashion people LOVE a good story, so it’s no surprise Patty’s drop dead gorgeous daughter Lydia was able to make a splash in the fashion world. Possessing Patty’s unique bone structure, her daughter has been adding fresh vitality and positivity to the Hearst name for the good part of the 21st Century.

Hearst. The name that just keeps giving! (Glad that she changed her name back to Patty).

{SHARE THIS} The Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise!

Telekinetic Coffee Shop Inspired by Carrie

This made us laugh . . .HARD.

Although nothing about telekinetic attacks is funny in any sense (someone could get hurt), we couldn’t help but laugh at the pure horror these pranksters conjured to spook the living daylights out of innocent coffee-goers in honor of the upcoming redesign of the Stephen King classic “Carrie“, starring Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore (out October 18).

It’s also rather apropos to be writing this post inside a coffee shop. Too bad it’s not turning out anywhere near as exciting as this.

Why do people stand there? I’d be out of there in a flash the second a man is being dragged up a wall. That’s the sign things are getting real messy. I guess also be careful who you spill your coffee on . . .

We also hope this inspires many more innovative and interactive movie promotions in the near {Future}!
