{MUSIC MINUTE} Jennifer Warnes sings “Easy to be Hard” from HAIR #LoveWins #PrayforOrlando

jennifer warnes - easy to be hard- the eye of faith vintage blog

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold
+
In the wake of the tragedy that struck us early Sunday morning in Orlando, we were inspired to post this very moving {MUSIC MINUTE} in honour of those lost, hurt, and affected by this unspeakable crime.
To imagine that in 2016, we are still dealing with repression, bigotry, and hate to such a violent extreme saddens us beyond belief. It truly goes to show how important it is for us to keep being invigorated and reminded of OUR {PAST} in the {PRESENT} to help shape the {FUTURE}.
The nightmares and horrors of yesterday, are the nightmares and horrors of today, and the more we keep ignoring them, the worse our world will become.
+
Many of you know that we just finished a successful sold out run of the musical HAIR at Hamilton Theatre Inc. and what truly drew us to this show was its message of friendship, freedom, peace, and love; and through being a part of this iconic show, we truly feel that it is our duty to continue spreading the groovy revolution.
Before she was crooning “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” and “Love Lifts Us Up (Where We Belong)” in the 1980s (winning Grammys and Academy Awards along the way), she starred as Sheila Franklin in the West Coast cast of HAIR.
Here is her soaring rendition of one of our favourite songs whose message is ultimately timeless and true especially after the unforgivable terror that was imposed on a vibrant and loving community.

Bullet Breasts and Beatnik Poetry, “High School Confidential” with Phillipa Fallon

Phillipa Fallon

Sometimes you can just wake up in the mood for some Beatnik poetry.

We want to hear that wa-dee-ya cry from that broken saxophone on the dusty radio . . .the wisha-wish-washish from the pipe in my basement sink . . . that shining reverie from that crusty Madonna posing as some telephone operator on the other end of this plastic cup. . .

high school confidential

Something like that, right? But even better (though I’m gonna give it up for myself on that one)!

Check out this clip from the classic not to be forgotten 1958 film “High School Confidential” starring Russ Tamblyn, John Drew Barrymore and Mamie Van Doren (to name a few). The film was meant to be an expose on the horrifying beat generation and their libertine ways infiltrating every dark corner of the American Dream! And GASP! Your children ! ! ! EEK!

HighSchoolConfidential - Mamie Van Doren & Russ Tamblyn

{Mamie Van Doren Gets A Visit From

A Young & Shirtless Russ Tamblyn}

You’d think most parents would be proud to see their daughter schmoozing it up at some artsy bar, and rattling out some rhythmic articulation of her soul, but amidst the repression of the era, this film was just another hot potato of controversy tampering with societal morals and hardcore stepping on accepted standards of decency.

Today it’s fun to revisit, and imagine life the way it was in the movies . . . Phillipa Fallon, the lovely brunette in the clip, totally attacks the scene and will make you want to watch it over and over again . . .Not much is known about the actress, but there is a site dedicated to her which I have included the link above! Interestingly, she was signed to the same agency as the notorious Frances Farmer . . .

So take me to the Beatnik Bar, Daddy! I have a ringing in my brain that needs to be let free!

Tomorrow is a drag, Man! Tomorrow is a King-sized bust!

Badalamenti Scores! Bringing Twin Peaks to Life with “Laura Palmer’s Theme”

Twin Peaks - Night Time is My Time - Fire Walk With Me

+mine too+

+

Sometimes we just get into that Twin Peaks kind of mood. You know when all you can think about is Twin Peaks, and everything about it, and that’s all you’re interested in for a certain amount of time ?

Well, we were having one of those nights (you can tell by our Tumblr, although I prematurely stopped myself, as well as Facebook this morning) and stumbled upon this gem of a moment! A severely magic one, if I do say.

None other than the brilliant musical mastermind Angelo Badalamenti retelling the moments when Twin Peaks came to life with David Lynch by his side talking him through the images in his mind . . . The video was originally from the Twin Peaks: Definitive Gold Box Edition (proud owner of).

You get to see the original keyboard, see the man himself playing the haunting theme, and get to know the inspirations and imagery behind it all. The only thing missing is David Lynch, himself!

I can’t imagine ever getting sick of that score . . .

It’s almost like you’re there. As we said, we are huge Twin Peaks fans so if you haven’t delved – do.

{Monday Music Minute} Annette Hanshaw’s “Pagan Love Song”

AnnetteHanshawRadioStarsAug1935

Known as “The Personality Girl”, Annette Hanshaw was a popular chanteuse of the 1920s who brought a modern spirit to the classic ingenue. She was signed with Pathe records, and later married label executive Herman Rose, effectively retiring from entertainment altogether.

While for many years it was believed the actress had begun her singing career shortly after her 16th birthday, it has been recently revealed that, in fact, Hanshaw was born in 1901, and not 1910, making her 25 at the time of her first recording in 1926.

The wonderful, beautiful, gorgeous, Annette Hanshaw

She was a prolific performer (with over 780 recordings!), and made records under dozens of pseudonyms including Gay Ellis for sentimental songs, Dot Dare and Patsy Young (for Betty Boop impressions), as well as Ethel Bingham, Marion Lee, Janet Shaw, and Lelia Sandford. And while she made an attempt at a comeback later in her life, the demos were never released.

We bring you now her 1929 classic “Pagan Love Song” to drift away with, and help enjoy the day. . . her voice is the pinnacle of that 1920s sound, and is as fresh and true as ever. It’s the perfect song for these hot and lazy summer days.

Please enjoy, and look for more of Annette Hanshaw‘s wonderful recordings (we are blessed to have them) !

Abandoned ‘Wizard of Oz’ Theme Park To Open!

abandonned wizard of oz theme park

An abandoned theme park based off of Frank L. Baum’s classic ‘Wizard of Oz’ will re-open its doors between October 5th and 6th to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of “Autumn at Oz”; a once a year reunion for past employees of the now derelict park in North Carolina.

The Land of Oz‘ opened its doors in 1970, and allowed guests to trot down the yellow brick road, take a balloon ride, and meet the Wicked Witch of the West, but by 1980 the park closed its doors, leaving the magical land of Oz to succumb to the wilderness.

Last year over 8,000 people attended the reunion, so be sure to check it out if you’re in the area this weekend!

Styling Orchards, the Band; Plus BONUS {MUSIC MINUTE} “Oh, Sister” by Orchards

The Eye of Faith -Orchards - Ally Kristensen Photography - 3

I learned long ago that when someone asks you to pull looks for a vaudeville circus inspired shoot, you do so!

Granted, I’ve never been asked to in this life, but something just tells you to jump at the opportunity when its right. We didn’t even have to question whether or not we wanted to be a part of this when the beautiful, and lovely (don’t forget talented) Jessica Panetta asked if we’d want to work together, and pull some looks to bring to a shoot for the city’s finest up-and-coming folk band, Orchards.

The Eye of Faith - Orchards - All Kristensen Photography - 10

Orchards comprises of Anthony William Wallace (violin, banjo), Daniel John Taylor (bass, guitar, ukulele), and Gabrielle Sylvane Charron-Merritt (trumpet, guitar) who are all uber-talented, fun, and highly multi-disciplinary artists who dove right into every scenario with gusto and poise.

Couldn’t have done it without my wardrobe partner, Heather English, who had a great eye for colour and detail (heart!) .

The Eye of Faith -Orchards - Ally Kristensen Photography- 13

Their music is haunting and eloquent with captivating melodies that evoke lost memories from deep within our collective consciousness. The songs are classic and utterly timeless bringing a modern twist to classic folk sounds. Needless to say, their music was the perfect inspiration for the shoot.

We played off the softness and decadent dishevelling of men and women seen in vintage photographs for the quieter moments, and looked for bold and intriguing colour and graphic combinations to complete the circus vibe.

All in all, I think the look completed is a nod to the past, but is completely reinvented – just like Orchard’s own music, which ultimately is the element we all hoped to showcase.

Each shot is so great to look back on, as you remember it all happening – when it was moving, and there were sounds, and laughter, and distraction; not with a photograph. These are magic moments here, captured throughout.

Please enjoy the photographs, and definitely dive into the track below entitled “Oh,Sister” by Orchards for a true escape from the everyday . . .

Check it! The Eye of Faith is becoming more and more of an art gallery, and we love it!

We are finding so many unique and intriguing vintage images everyday, and we love the many people who see the beauty in these remarkable snapshots of the past. They are indeed, frozen moments lost in the time . . .

We are so fascinated by the stories contained within each of them, but most of the time we will just never know. Take for instance one of our favourite “moments” of our collection of vintage vernacular . . . The Breathtaking Vintage 1960s Beehive Bad-Ass Beauty! That’s right.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Quite the impressive hive she’s got there. She is a beautiful idol to natural beauty, and the mystery photographer definitely appreciated his subject as so. An original photograph from the 1960s, this image transcends past any insecurity of the “not knowing”-ness of it all, and lives to be a timeless image suitable for anyone of discerning tastes, and an eye for something special.

Tell your friends, and help spread the word! And don’t be shy to want her all to yourself, because you can buy her now on Etsy!

Vintage vernacular (snapshots) is an authentic and affordable way to collect contemporary art, which is why we are such big fans. We know there are like-minded people out there, and if that’s you, you can check out the {SHOP} for more cool vintage photographs for sale <<click here>>.
