This a photo of some of the talented set builders of the BABYLON set for INTOLERANCE {1916} directed by D.W. GRIFFITH [b. January 22, 1875 - July 23, 1948] ♒️🔮👑 rocking some beautiful #vintage #mens #workwear #vibes 🔥🔥🔥 these dedicated men worked tirelessly to build this mammoth mile long ancient city on the desolate corner of Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard under the intense Los Angeles sun 🔥 Over four thousand extras were gathered, rehearsed, and dressed to the Gods for the unheard of pay of $2 a day + lunch + travel fare to bring the “Feast of Belshazzar” to life in all its decadent glory complete with giant plaster elephant columns 🐘, massive intricately carved and researched thrones, altars, exotic animals, hanging gardens, lavish parades of opulent gemstone dripping extras and full-on chariot races 🤯 Even by today’s standards this would be extremely over the top and they would easily use CGI to digitally map the crowds and monstrous scenery...however, not during the Golden Dawn of Hollyweird 👁 these men painstakingly worked to bring the directors vision to life - a sweeping three and half hour saga in four parts with subtitle of “Love’s Struggle Through the Ages” spanning centuries of time ⏳ it’s a time machine in many senses as it travels between the ancient past, to the daze of Christ, into the Renaissance to the {present} / now {past} 🕰 it is regarded now as a veritable masterpiece and an essential building block in modern day #cinemastyle and #aesthetic, however it was a major flop at the box office as the broken plot and lengthy running time was a huge setback which ultimately set the high hopes and dreams of Griffith back to zero. His legacy was over, and the city of Babylon became a ghost #old ollywood haunting the neighbourhood until it was eventually torn down as a fire hazard in 1919 🔥 it is however, remembered today for its wild #vintagestyle and sheer #innovation 🎞 indeed, no gigantic blockbuster would exist without INTOLERANCE and for that we are all eternally grateful D.W. Poet and leader of the Romantic movement, notorious playboy, rebel dandy supreme, and Aquarius King ♒️ In his prime his celebrity in England was that of a modern day rock star with much scandalous notoriety attached to his name. He had a disdain for society, but also indulged in its many luxuries (especially women...and some men, too 🤔)!
