The Junction Flea, You, and Me! {June Edition} + Night Market, June 22!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Rain or shine, we didn’t have to worry about it this time because Mother Nature was good to us this time around and provided gorgeous weather for a gorgeous Junction Flea! We were so thrilled to see so many people out in the neighbourhood, and whether they be locals, friends, or from afar, each and every one of the guests who visited us at the booth were so fabulous and unique in their own way.

The food was sold out by around 2 pm, which can only mean the event was slamming! We like it when it’s like this. We like it when it’s like this, and have our fingers crossed it will be like this and maybe even more next time around!

Not only are the finds amazing at the Flea, but the people are too! There’s such a bold and beautiful mix of people coming in and out , you wouldn’t even believe the diversity!  It really becomes one swell melting pot with so many different types of people rubbing shoulders, which is really cool to be a part of.

Lots of tattoos, lots of beards, lots of bangs, lots of babies, and a lot of BAD ASS style! That’s why we love it here. . .

 the-eye-of-faith-vintage-in-the-news-toronto-life-june-2013-1

We were excited to see the latest issue of Toronto Life Magazine hit the news stands today, as your faithful vintage voyagers here at The Eye of Faith were lucky enough to make an appearance on their glossy coloured pages.

Beautiful.

Can you spot us ?

Check out the fuss!

Its such an honour to be featured in The Reasons to Love Toronto edition  (right alongside the Ikea Monkey and Beyonce’s mink fur eyelashes) as a purveyor of “hipster bliss” – very cool. Beyond, really.

In honour we wanted to share our success with our readers, who really have made it worth it to keep sticking it out and marching forward with our initiative towards a more beautiful tomorrow!

Lets keep marching to the beat of our own drum, and looking for those sacred lost memories of the {past} that keep informing us today, and help bring these lost memories to the forefront. Without your support, we never would have made it this far, so a big, huge, thank you very much!

Riders on the Storm @TheJunctionFlea

The Eye of Faith @ The Junction Flea 2

The Eye of Faith had our trusty mannequin dressed very chic, and spanning the decades in a 1930s “SAINTS” basketball tank, beautiful 1940s baby mink fur wrap, and a 1950s black straw fedora for a look that reminded me of Paris (the kind of masculine and decadent look Galliano himself might have choreographed). Indeed, he looked quite dapper and was ready to impress in the sunshine for our very first ever outdoor Pop-Up at this month’s Junction Flea!

As usual, we met many fantastic and style-wise individuals, and saw many of our favourite recurring faces, and were able to send home many of them with some of our unique finds. Seeing as we do most of our business online, it is always great to have that face-to-face interaction, and also getting to know our neighbours and introduce them to our brand. That in itself is the most fulfilling thing about having our Pop-Ups, and we look forward to doing many many more (especially if the weather decides to cheer up!).

This month’s Flea came to be probably the most challenging yet, even as we were so excited to be setting up literally just down the street from our studio! It wasn’t the man-power that gave us issues, but a much greater force that we are all accustomed to, and even after thousands of years are not immune – the powerful force of nature!

Before Vintage Armageddon Struck!

Mamma had a bit of a temper this Mother’s Day (Happy Mother’s Day to all you beautiful Mammas!), as she wouldn’t give any of the vendors a break! We were lucky enough to have a tent, and the shelter of a brick wall which managed to shield us from the gusting winds, pouring rains, and hail storms which scattered themselves between beautiful blue skies and the warmth of the sun. Talk about fickle.

Like soldiers, we stuck it out until the bitter cold end, having watched dozens of vendors go down one by one and vying to pack up early and head for shelter. However, determination won, and we were able to make some brilliant sales and spark some new friendships along the way, as well. Very good.

Shout out to our vendor neighbours Brad at Fair Judy’s and Lisa at Partners in Crime Vintage for sticking it out alongside us. Way to go! We survived the “vintage apocalypse“, as it was becoming known . . . We’re looking forward to more fun and festivities next month at The Junction Flea! Having held our own this time around, here’s hoping Mother Nature decides to give us a break, a little.

The Eye of Faith @ The Junction Flea 3

If you weren’t able to make it down to visit us at The Flea, please check out the {SHOP} where many of our items have been uploaded, and many more to come in the next few weeks! We have been promising womenswear, and we shall deliver! And all you men dressing like boys, come check us out for something both fun and stylish, why don’t you?!

Bring the past back to life, and do your part to stop the excess waste of textiles and clothing our society is currently suffering from!

Enjoy the video!

Until we meet again,

The Eye on the Street – May 9, 2013 + THE JUNCTION FLEA

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Eye of Faith‘s own Aaron Robert Duarte took the street, and captured some magic moments that really showcase our neighbourhood’s most unique quality. There is a great blend of past and present, old and new, and nature and man-made that make this a one-of-a-kind corner of the globe that must be showcased and admired.

Also, if you are in Toronto this weekend, make sure to make a stop in the Junction this Sunday, and visit {theEye} at the Junction Flea. The event is from 9am – 4pm, and is located in the empty lot on Indian Grove and Dundas Street West – the original outdoor location where the Junction Flea was born. Admission is $2.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

Plus, you never know what you might find! Apart from our selection of finds, there are dozens of different vendors to choose from, all of whom bring to the table some of the most unique and cool finds you are to find in the city.

We always have a ton of fun, and its the only place in the city you can get your palm read, eat handmade dumplings, invest in a burlesque costume, buy exquisite handmade jewelry, look for that new old work of art for above the fireplace, and find wicked hand-picked favourites for your wardrobe all in one place! THE FEBRUARY FLEA, YOU, AND ME : Some Cool Stuff Found @JunctionFlea

The Eye of Faith at the February Flea

The February edition of The Junction Flea came and went, and was again, a blast.

Just to be there among our vintage and style savvy peers, who run some of the city’s finest and best vintage stores; to be in this company, is an absolute dream! We love what we brought to the table, and got to meet some really rad people in the process.

Come To My Table

We are going to continue working towards getting even more things online at the {SHOP}, so stay tuned.

We’ve also been excited to join the ETSY community as we recently opened up a shop with them with some of our favourite and most desirable pieces. From the feedback of peers, we figured this would be a great place to promote {theEye} and the wicked finds we have accumulated.

We’re just trying to get the word out there to every available platform we can, so that our visibility online can be at its max. So don’t forget, if you are, or know any style savvy individuals, make sure to direct them to THE EYE OF FAITH!

Boozy Hot Chocolate Courtesy of Micah and Paul

This month’s flea was not just a home-run because of the boozy hot chocolate, but it there was simply a great vibe about the day.

The energy was so real.

Perhaps it was the Valentine’s Day atmosphere, but we were definitely feeling the love. So, Thank You everybody who made their way out, and hopefully bought something 😉

We were delighted to be set up beside the booth for OPTICIANADO – the city’s only purveyor dedicated to vintage glasses and frames.

Not only do they have a wicked selection of frames to choose from, but they are full on stylists willing to work with you to find the look that not only suits you, but can elevate you to heights of vintage style glory.

We love their store (located at 2919 DUNDAS ST W.), and being just down the street from us, we are always getting to see their wicked window displays.

There’s something really cool going on there, so we would definitely recommend any vintage lover to make their way over there to, if not grab a pair of vintage frames, at least get to browse through their incredible inventory.

FOLLOW them on TWITTER, and don’t forget to check out their site for more information.

Also fun was the fact that we got to do a little shopping of our own.

Going to a Flea Market is hard enough not buy anything, but then to work there all day, is pretty much impossible! Especially, as the other vendors are unfolding their treasures in the early morning. You are pretty much keeping tabs on the things you like the entire day. It becomes a funny process, really.

You don’t exactly set up {SHOP} to be buying, but with all the great things to be found, at such great prices, it was impossible not to dip into our own wallets for something special.

Just a few things:

The Mod Squad Book From Mrs HuizengaBack Cover of THE MOD SQUAD 1969 Book

We’ve already started reading this “MOD SQUAD, Assignment: The Arranger” book from 1969 that we picked up from the lovely Mrs. Huizenga. She always knows how to get my invested with nostalgic teenagery-type books from the sixties, and this one, with its wild psychedelic front and back cover illustration was no exception.

“Me? A cop? Why, less than a year ago, I spit in a cop’s face!” says Julie, the story’s main heroine (played by Peggy Lipton in the TV Show, who would later go on to play Norma in “Twin Peaks“), and that’s just the beginning. Can’t wait to get even more invested in this one. And for $10, how could we say “NO” ?

Tenesse Williams Paperback- A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE- Vintage Marlon Brando Cover

Finding a paperback version of Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire” is not as easy as it sounds. For months we’ve been trolling the shelves of used book stores and thrift shops, and we’ve never hit the jackpot on finding one. UNTIL, unloading time came and tucked away in one of Liz Ikiriko’s bins was this beauty.

Liz owns and operates The Arthur on College Street (550 to be exact), and has a real eye for treasures. Treasures like this one! And for $3, it was definitely too good to be true. In these cases, its always best to just take it with you.

The last treasure we picked up on our day at the Junction Flea this February came from the booth of the beautifully romantic and decadently decayed stock of one of our favourites, Tattered and Torn. Kim has a unique eye for really beautiful pieces that are not shy of their age or history. She carries everything from beautiful vintage clothes to desirable pieces for any well-dressed home. Somehow tucked away amongst a pile of old handwritten letters I came across one of the most captivating pieces of the day:

Tattered and Torn- Vintage Playing Card - Queen of Diamonds- Her Name is Rachel

A beautiful Victorian playing card. She is the Queen of Diamonds, and from the looks of her, she is named “Rachel”. It was such a beautiful and mysterious object that truly resonated, and for $1, I was completely sold. She now sits watching as we type at our writing desk. Don’t be surprised to see her show up later around these parts, too.

So, as you can see, it was a pretty sweet day for us at The Junction Flea, and we can’t wait to do it, again. The Junction Flea is every second Sunday of every month, so mark the date, and make it out for a great afternoon of bargains and treasure hunts!
