E.O.F. Presents +KNIGHTS OF THE SANDCASTLE+

+KNIGHTS OF THE SANDCASTLE +

There once was a mysterious band of knights who roamed and raved their days and nights along the banks of the cool dark waters. Young and wild, they howled at the moon like the wolves, and on the clear days when the sun seemed to sparkle like diamonds on their faces, they stood sullen like statues of antiquity before cawing and cooing outrageously to their peers.

They sat watching the crowd waves roar; the boardwalk full of walking visitors, strange and new from far away places, that would all turn away in disdain from the boys of summer, sensing somehow their mighty position above it all . . .

They weren’t there for the sights and sounds, instead vying for an order of things far from the distressing quarrels of everyday society.

Simple positions shared amongst them all. One assigned to watch, another to distribute, another to discover, and the rest to play by the rules. No one over stepped a turn at the bottle, for each one knew that their last could be any day.  Neville, one of the leaders, would say, ‘Never shy from your true colours’ and these they would display with unbroken pride.

Your honour was earned by the friendships you garnered and gathered.

Some say they had magic on their sides; magic powers taken from the ages, used to ensure their place along the sand dunes. Others say they made friends easily, but were actually ghosts playing games on the common folk.

Only one place in the world for them. A sacred fellowship that haunts us all to this day . . .

I like to imagine seeing them there every time I go back to the seaside. Guarding their little corner of the Earth, and protecting the small sliver of paradise they managed to claim as their own.

Sometimes I can hear them sing their favourite tune; a memory that wavers from faded dream to brilliant exuberance.

It was a familiar one made their own by one of their musically gifted initiates –

“Going down to Stoney End.

I never wanted to go down to Stoney End.

Momma let me start all over!

Cradle me Momma!

Cradle me Again . . . “

Vintage Summer Style Inspiration – Bikinis, Beaches, Babes, and Bond!

martine-beswick-Bond vintage- swimsuit style summer inspiration

Canada is infamous for its cold weather, but we were shocked to wake up to snowfall in April this morning! Needles to say, it had us yearning for those days of blissful sunshine and relaxing on the beach.

Sometimes we use inspiration to invoke a certain spirit to amp up our day, but on days like this, inspiration can be used to transport oneself to new worlds. In our case, we were looking for much hotter destinations to take us away from this bitter cold.

This being said, we easily found ourselves taken away to the beach, and who better to spend a day at the beach with than the impenetrable, secret agent, 007 himself – Bond. James Bond.

And if you’re friends with Bond, you’re likely to rub shoulders and elbows (maybe more) with any number of his beautiful beach bunny sweethearts. But don’t get too cozy in the sand just yet. Some of these beach bod bombshells are not to be trusted, and some of them have a bark that’s worse than their bite. So maybe best to just admire from the distance and let Bond do the dirty work . . .

From Honey Rider to Agent XXX, Bond has had more than his handful of beautiful women, which could account for his own impeccable sense of style. He is a man that knows it pays to look your best!

So enough chit-chat! Feel the sand between your toes, and lets hit the waves!

Can you feel the heat already?

{DISCOVERED} Bathing in Brighton: Vintage Memories and Musings

Who are the  dapper gents in top hats and scandalous bathing shorts?

None other than some of the original members of The Brighton Swimming Club. This photo was taken circa 1863 by photographer Benjamin Botham.

Seems like the boys of Brighton have been stirring up a lot of conversation on the net, which seems quite remarkable for a one hundred and forty nine year old memory!

It’s remarkable that photographs like this have survived,  helping keep the past alive, and showing all of us here in the {PRESENT} the weird and wonderful moments of the past they don’t teach you in history class.

The Brighton Swim Club was established on May 4th, 1860, following a meeting of swimming enthusiasts at The Jolly Fisherman in Brighton’s Market Street. The members, all serious for the sport, were completely revolutionary to the strict mandates of Victorian dress codes often ditching their scanty shorts to swim the seas nude.

As noted in our story on Men’s Vintage Swimwear Styles, swimsuits were made of heavy cottons or wools and covered most of the body, making it highly uncomfortable and straining.

Due to public outrage over the sight of the naked male swimmers, authorities in Brighton would introduce regulations that insisted that men who wanted to swim on the main beach between the hours of 8 AM and 9PM, would have to wear a bathing costume to “preserve public decency”.

{The club’s  “two-dolphins” crest is embroidered on these suits – a symbol of the seaside town. This photo was taken outside their clubhouse at No. 231 King’s Road Arches on March 1881}

That’s where the calecons, a French creation, came into play allowing for the coverage authorities desired, and the lack of coverage desired by the club members. They were truly rebels of the waters, treading the fine lines of societal morality and the function they knew they (and WE) needed!

The Brighton Swimming Club is still alive and well today! The Swimming Club has gone through great efforts to keep their history in tact so all can see. Floating Memories is an archive dedicated to preserving and curating their collected history, and features a remarkable database of vintage clothing and lifestyle. Their Vimeo channel yields some true wonders!

If you enjoy the beach (I know you do), and vintage styles (I know you do too) be sure to check this out!

Thanks to Callum James for bringing this remarkable tradition to our attention. His blog Front Free Endpaper features many cool vintage treasures to adore. Also David Simkin, whose Sussex Photo History blog featured a brilliant page on The Brighton Swimming Club, including a detailed breakdown of that fantastic picture of the gentleman wearing top hats that’s been buzzing around the place!

Once again, history prevails and shows it’s not going away anytime soon. So have fun! Do what you want!

Hope you’re all having a great summer!

Sincerely,

This is How They Do. “Come Into The Water” (1929)

Screen shot 2013-06-13 at 3.08.53 PM

“I don’t mind giving money to orphans, but I draw the line at working for them.”

Oh, the 1920s, how I love thee so. You must check out this incredibly silly, weird, and wonderful crazy flapper beach ballet to the tune “Come into the Water”. The ladies are rehearsing tirelessly for the upcoming Orphans’ Benefit.

The clip starts off with some impressively fluid camera movement along the bustling shoreline, revealing all the beach fun that could be had in 1929 including beach volleyball and the charleston! Some things never change . . .

It’s just a short clip, this one. Just enough to make you smile. Check it out!

Come Sail Away With Me . . . Sailing The Norwegian Sea {Summer, 1937}.

Thanks to the National Archives of Norway we found this beautiful series of photographs featuring a long ago lost afternoon dream spent on the beautiful Norwegian Sea.

The photos were taken by photographer Thomas Neumann, and are just a part of a vast faded wonderland,  strange but endearingly and hauntingly beautiful.

These are memories past…Neumann was  a member of the Norwegian Nazi Party, the Nasjonal Samling (NS), from the party’s earliest days. A trained engineer, these photos were donated to the Archives in 2007.

It’s just a summer by the sea. Candid moments caught in between…What we see is what we know. Everything else is lost along the way to getting here.

E.O.F. Style Idol: Frankie Avalon, Teen Idol Worship

“I think today’s music absolutely stinks. I really do mean that.”

Frankie Avalon (b.1940).

Don’t worry, we know. Considering today’s reigning teen idol is Mr. Justin Bieber – you know him- it’s easy to see Mr. Avalon’s remorse. Sure the boy from Stratford has plenty of swag, but to Frankie Avalon I’m sure he’s no Teen Angel!

Frankie ascended the throne of Teen Supreme  starring in “Beach Party”with Beachgirl Extraordinarie Annette Funicello, the first of five official “Beach Party” films that would spin “Beach Party” mythology into the public realm, and without a doubt kick fashion’s ass.

frankie avalon

Frankie Avalon was far too much a sweetheart to ever kick anyone’s ass, but his die-hard all american 1960s summer fashions definitely do all the talking anyone needs.

It would be this single released Feb. 2, 1959 , “Venus”, that would debut a young gentleman from Philadelphia’s sparkling talents. Couldn’t imagine the Biebs crooning so cool.

So please enjoy…1959-style!

Sincerely,
