Maila Nurmi: Beat Babe vs. Squares !!!

{MAILA NURMI & ELVIS PRESLEY GOOFING OFF}

When we say the name Maila Nurmi, you might not know who the fuck we are talking about. What if we were to say, Vampira? Of course!

Our current climate is so influenced and inspired by her delightful darkness, gothic glamour, and overall irreverence to almost everything! Oh, and did we mention she was friends with James Dean and Elvis??!

You might have even read our STYLE {DIVINITY} tribute to the goddess of creepy chic. Somehow in the 1950s at the height of conservative moral values, this daring Finnish actress rose to stardom with a status-quo bashing gig as television’s first last night horror show host of The Vampira Show which officially premiered on May 1, 1954!

As Vampira she retold the story of women in the media – not just prim and proper and ready to serve; the only thing Vampira was ready to serve was a bloody head on a platter for brunch. Its still hard for me to wrap my head around how she was able to get away with her gruesome take on House & Home living. All the more reason to worship this divine creature for everything she stood for.

Now, while Maila found popularity playing Vampira, she was an actress in Hollywood playing many roles. This next clip we found, we fell in love with – showcasing her talents in another rebel archetype that was taking hold in America in the 50s: the lousy beatnik.

A precursor to the hipster of today, a gateway to the free love hippie movement of the 60s and 70s. The beatnik was every conservative’s biggest pain in the ass. Like millennials of the atomic era- they were often viewed as aimless, pretentious, and overall whacky.

This clip taken from the iconic Beat-era classic “The Beatnik Generation” features Maila Nurmi pissing off a couple of squares with her off beat poem sporting a short blonde haircut and a rat on the shoulder;  she completely oozes this infamous generation’s vibe to the max! Its very comical…and tell me she doesn’t look a bit like Katya Zamolodchikova ?!

{CHECK OUT MORE MAILA NURMI INSPIRATION HERE}

Anyways, we thought is was all too fitting for The Eye of Faith and had to share! Lets keep empowering the brave, and blessing the bold, and letting people be the best they can be inside and out!

Let us all be a bit more like Ms. Nurmi, shall we?

Until we meet again,

+STYLE STAR+ ANDRE JUDD: PROPHET OF FASHION

If you’re a fan of Lookbook, or have ever had the chance to browse the online showcase of individual styles gathered to help foster the “collective fashion consciousness” that Lookbook is all about. While glancing past looks by a self proclaimed Mermaid from Neverland you are bound to stumble across this true one-of-a-kind Prophet of Fashion.

Just when you thought style couldn’t get more exciting or gloriously out-of-control you will meet Andre Judd. Andre treads the lines of dreaming and reality with a panache and attention to detail rivalling some of fashion’s greats. Time and time again, Andre has proved that the art of dressing is as much an art as any.

This type of talent is rare, and very few can achieve his bold unique punch of imagination, virtual reality, and pure abandon.  So, naturally we felt the need to connect with the Stylist, Designer, and Fashion Blogger Extraordinaire who answered a few of our questions on life, style, inspiration, and the unique fashion-forward fashion scene of Manila!

Most of all, we felt Andre was the perfect example of what we here at The Eye of Faith are always harping on about and that’s the courage to find inspiration and be your truest self to the highest extent.

“We see something new. Something exciting”

-Andre Judd.

EOF: There seems to be a lot of excitement and intrigue in the world of fashion in the Philippines. What would surprise or excite people most about the Filipino fashion scene?

AJ: Indeed. Every season we see new bright young talents emerge. These designers score high on the critics and fashion press because they have a refined focus on aesthetics as well being commercial.

I think what excites Filipinos about the fashion scene, is that every season it gets better and better. We see something new, something exciting.

EOF: Where would you say the epicentre of Filipino fashion is right now in the Philippines? Any favourite go-to spots?

AJ: Manila is considered the current fashion epicenter, drawing in designers from different parts of the country, as well as Filipino designers based abroad. There are a lot of cool retail shops and boutiques to check out in Manila. Top of my mind is Greenbelt 5, where a few concentrated stores are found selling current collections from my favourite local designers.

EOF: We love how many looks you create, and your undeniable knowledge for style. Who taught you these secrets? God, or deal with the Devil?

AJ: God. Definitely 🙂

EOF: What has been your most important lesson in life when it comes to your own personal brand of style?

AJ: Never say never. It’s my mantra ever since.

EOF: Creating so many complex and detailed looks must be quite the task. What is your secret to staying focused?

AJ: It’s not really hard. I wake up every morning with a strong idea on what I would wear.

EOF: You mix a lot of items one might typically prescribe as masculine or feminine, and it seems once they get the Andre Judd touch, it’s neither. Instead, it’s a whole new brand of cool. What do you call this?
AJ: Some call it non-conventional, others call it androgynous, but I call it post-modern and irreverent 🙂

“Fashion is about change”

-Andre Judd.

EOF: Interesting shapes, textures, and patterns are essential ingredients to your fashion magic. Do you have any tips on incorporating these ideas into one’s everyday style?
AJ: Try playing with shapes, textures, and patterns. For the novice, one can start with just one different detail. Like if you love black, why not play with colour – lets say fuchsia, and combine it with black. If you like wearing block colors, why not try a printed top? It’s the idea of adapting to new things. After all, fashion is about change. You don’t need to sacrifice your style, you just simply like it to evolve 🙂

EOF: You’ve accidentally conjured up an angry spirit who won’t get the hell out of your closet. You want to call the cops, but you know they won’t believe you so you pull out your exorcism kit and go to work. What is the one thing you are hoping to save from your wardrobe?
AJ: Oh my, toughest question ever. I’d pick my accessories box. You can do wonders to your look just by adding a necklace or a brooch.

EOF: What is your favourite vintage find, and why do you think your devils approve?

AJ: Its my Gianni Versace bomber jacket from the 80s.  You wouldn’t believe how super cheap I got it. Its my number one treasured find because its real leather, it has chain mail, looks very contemporary,  the color of the leather goes with anything, and it gives an instant edge to any look.

EOF: We have received a lot of botched up advice on fashion in our lives, but we have always stayed pure to what is inside. What is the worst fashion advice you’ve ever been given?

AJ: Men shouldn’t wear women’s clothing.

EOF: For us, fashion is definitely an escape, and the style or look we wear is the story being told. You are an expert in storytelling, with a seemingly eternal well of inspiration. With almost 400 looks on LOOKBOOK, dark we ask – do you have a favourite?

AJ: Every new look I post is my favourite.

EOF: Here at The Eye of Faith, we like to think of ourselves as soldiers marching for a better tomorrow. Are there any causes or struggles in your life that you are fighting for?

AJ: I am a huge advocate of Filipino fashion so as much as I can I like to wear Filipino designers in my looks. That way I can help promote their names in the international scene via LOOKBOOK.

EOF: What sort of things can the readers of The Eye of Faith expect from Andre Judd in the future?

AJ: Expect the unexpected 🙂

Patti Quatro is HOT - EOF Style Divinity

We’ve always had a thing for Patti Quatro.

The statuesque brunette of the classic Detroit girl group, The Pleasure Seekers, and sister to Suzi Quatro, Patti is a triumphant figure who put the power of beauty, style, and girl power to the forefront of our culture, and helped propelled the things we take for granted in our contemporary world.

Patti Quatro Ericson on July 25, 2011

Thank the heavens for E.O.F. correspondent John Wisnewski, who got the chance to ask this Girl Group maven some questions about her captivating life.

JOHN: What was the first band that you were in, Patti?

PATTI:First band I was in was The Pleasure Seekers, started in 1964 when I was 16 years old and Suzi was 14, in Detroit Rock City. We grew our talent jamming with all our home boys…..Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, MC5, Alice Cooper, Iggy, etc…….all honing our craft as we played the teen circuits together.

JOHN: Patti, Fanny paved the way for future female fronted groups-  does Fanny receive recognition for this?

PATTI: All our roots bands receive recognition constantly from magazines, interviews, fans, etc…..people who appreciate us forging the road for women.    Actually, Suzi and I started the earliest at 14 and 16 in Detroit……earliest heavy rocking all female band…1964.   Others started later, and were more soft/girly sounding.

Hopefully Fanny will be at some point. But, Suzi has had more than a few honours for her contributions.

Commercial Break: Suspiria! (1977)

We had been anticipating watching this one for some time, and finally this past weekend we indulged in a masterpiece called Suspiria! Starring a young Jessica Harper who’s starred in The Phantom of the Paradise and Rocky Horror Picture Show II, and keeps us entertained to this very day as the Crabby Cook.

This is tale of an elite european ballet School where collecting on debt is a ‘charming habit’ of the students(insert the very sexy and very shadey Barbara Magnolfi), and the teacher’s and staff know more about the historic ballet school then they’d ever to let on.

From the Blind Pianist, to a creepy little blonde boy, this flick has got it all, including a killer soundtrack!

Drawn in by the Euro-Horror King, Dario Argento’s name alone, we knew we’d be in for some fun gore, sexy girls, and supernatural spooks, but were clueless to where the story may lead us other than reading a brief synopsis before hand. To our delight, every scene was as beautiful as the last!

With a set as beautiful as any work of art, adorned in blue and red velvet wallpaper, labyrinths of stripes,  a wide assortment of stained glass windows, shiny black lackerred wood panels and door’s, mile high ceilings, and an opulent Serpent staircase we’d love to climb.

We are introduced to the school through the eyes of a wide -eyed newcomer , played by Jessica Harper, who quickly grows suspicious of the happenings within the domineering school.

Upon her arrival, she witness a leggy buck-toothed blond fleeing from the school in a rainstorm, and learns the next morning of the school escapees dreadful fate (emphasis on the wide assortment of stained glass…).

Odd events lead to odder. Must be more than Voodoo? With everyday shrouded in mysteries, it isn’t until our heroin shares her suspicions with her classmate, played by lovely Stefani Casini, that the puzzle truly  begins to come together.  Leading Harper to a Psychiatric Convention and conversations of Witches and Covens.  Speculation leads to proof when it’s realized the Ballet school was founded by a great and powerful Witch who was said to be killed in a fire at the turn of the century.

If you’re a fan of Black Swan or Rocky Horror Picture Show, this one’s for you!

This is no chick flick by any means despite the gaggle of gals in ballet shoes.  Scene after scene, Dario Argento will keep you shocked and in suspense as this tale unravels.  Enjoy the Eyeful of opulence but be prepared for some gross yet charming gut-turning death’s.

Heed our words…This is a great film!!

GHOST HOLE V FUNDRAISER Poster

It’s that time of year again – October, our favorite month, not only for all the fun you can have with Fall Fashions, but also for all the creepy cool stuff that begins to emerge with Halloween in our midst!! And with Halloween and all that ghoulishly good inspiration all around comes the re-emergence of GHOST HOLE, the all-night art extravaganza which will take place on Toronto Island in its fifth incarnation.

Also exciting is that yours truly will be taking part in the goings-on this year with an art installation entitled “Voodoo Beach” which will bring light to Toronto’s dark slave history with the imagined rituals and romance of voodoo in all its many faces.

This Friday join the curators of GHOST HOLE, and some of Toronto’s best bands for a fundraiser for the event which will provide much needed $$$ to pay for this one of a kind wild night of art and horror, and help provide some much-needed income to the night’s artists’ who have come together to choreograph this wickedly wild experience that you will never forget.

Check out bands Fresh Flesh, Doctor Ew, Wake Island, CRHYMES, and Rambunctious at Double Double Land (209 Augusta Ave) in Kensington Market with a suggested donation of $5 and plenty of cheap drinks to be had all the night through! Sounds like a blast, right?

Be there or be square. Check out this wicked promotions video by the ever-talented Brandon A. Dalmer for the night’s event to help get you in the mood. . .

{STYLE-WISE + MUSIC MINUTE} “Mambo” from West Side Story!

I’ve always been a huge fan of this film, not only for its modern take on a classic tale, and some superb, unmatched, out-of-this-world choreography from Jerome Robbins (who was fired from the film for his back breaking attention to detail), but msot of all it’s amazing sense of style!

style wise- west side story- bad ass street gang vintage

Even almost 60 years later, it’s absolutely timeless, and pretty far advanced with its popping colors and slick silhouettes. In fact, if you pay attention, you might notice that lots of these looks are being rehashed for the runways today. And turn your head down any city street and you’ll see the same kicks, the same two toned blazers, the same shirts, and all the same skinny jeans those boys are wearing in the film.

dance! style wise- west side story

mambo- dance scene- west side story- vintage style wise

This is the gym scene, and the famous “Mambo” duel the Jets and Sharks bring to the school dance – and the place that Maria first meets Tony (or Tony first meets Maria?). Yes, it’s a sappy story, AND a musical, but it has a lot guts to pair New York street gangsters against each other doing modern dance. If anything, it’s all a bit surreal the way it comes together, which makes for an especially powerful visceral visual experience.

Pair it off with some exquisite orchestration, and you have a timeless classic to forever remember. And if you don’t take my word for it. You’re a fool. Hate to say it, but this film has style in spades, and if you can’t get past the musical aspect of it all – I feel sorry for you . . .

Been super busy lately, so apologize for the lack of posts! Will be getting back on track shortly. That’s why I thought it appropriate to give you a double duty inspiration today.

Style + Music. A perfect combination.

“The Name Game” Challenge: Jessica Lange VS. Shirley Ellis

american-horror-story-asylum-the-name-game

It’s been about two weeks since American Horror Story: Asylum ended on FX, and for anyone who has seen the show, you will know that it is near impossible to get that rhythm and beat of Jessica Lange’s boppin’ rendition of the classic “The Name Game” which premiered in Episode 10 of the miniseries.

The scene, in which all the members of the cast work it out to the tune of Shirley Ellis’ 1964 hit is already sweeping the internet, and proves again that the show is there to push the boundaries of the genre, and take the story to the very outer limits of the audience’s expectation.

Surprising, Jessica Lange had never performed a sing and dance number throughout her expansive career, and so the scene was born, making everyone wonder why she hasn’t been shaking her thing and lip synching to herself before on screen. Absolutely electric, and ICONIC.

1005001

Shirley Ellis, on the other hand, found immense success with the song, making her way to the top 3rd spot on the Billboard 100 with the number in 1965, but failed to have any follow-up success after this crazy song. It’s kind of a dirty word, but – one-hit-wonder, is often used to describe the career of Ms. Ellis who would release it a second time in the 60s, and again in 1973.

Now we are often looking for those bridges that lead us from the {Past} to the {Present}, and what better example than this! What we couldn’t manage was which version we enjoyed better?!

We grabbed videos of both Jessica Lange and Shirley Ellis performing the song, and were hoping to have a little battle, of sorts. They both have their merits, but we wanted to see which version struck the chord most with our readers!

So sit back, enjoy “The Name Game”,  and comment below which was your favourite!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Meeting Olive from “BULLETS OVER BROADWAY”

Bullets Over Broadway

Bullets Over Broadway was a great film from 1994, which garnered a second Academy Award for Dianne Wiest, as well as six other nominations including Best Director for Woody Allen. The cast also includes veteran actors such as Tracey Ullman, Jim Broadbent, Chazz Palminteri, and Mary-Louise Parker.

Starring John Cussack as a neurotic playwright in the 1920s, the film follows the follies of making a work of art, and the many pains of compromises of getting a respectable work of art produced. If the title isn’t indication enough, things quickly fall out of whack as the play gets more and more involved with a mobster and his gang.

f100bullets

The film is undoubtedly one of Allen’s best, and if you enjoyed the 1920s period recreation done in Midnight in Paris, you will be sure to love the scenery here – New York, flappers, the 1920s, Art Deco  (everything in swing with the design trends of today, in fact) – and if nothing else, as you will see from this clip, Jennifer Tilly really goes out of her way to steal the show as Olive, the naive and talkative dancer turned Broadway actress.

Bullets Over Broadway (1994)

Some of her lines are the very best. And it is no surprise she got nominated for an Oscar, too, for the crazy kooky character she developed here. Cussack is also great as the Allen-type character, making all the wools, tweeds, vests, ties, messy hair, and academic looks of a playwright come right to life.

If you are a style savant, comedy aficionado, oscar follower, or simply the bored lonely type, then Bullets Over Broadway is the film for you!

Check it out! Hope you enjoy!

Most sincerely,
