OPRAH’S CRUSADE AGAINST GRUNGE!

{Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage}

The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.

-Oprah Winfrey

Since the Golden Globes, Oprah is on everyone’s mind after a poignant acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony which has gone as far as having people saying “OPRAH FOR PRESIDENT!”

The model for elegant maturity and refinement for most, it has come to our attention that this Queen of the Screen really fought hard against something we totally take for granted – GRUNGE STYLE!!!

That’s right people. I think Oprah hates GRUNGE; that iconic style that emerged from the late 80s which rejected the gloss and polish of mainstream fashion for a more relaxed, tattered and easy vibe and was popularized by designers Marc Jacobs and bands like Nirvana, R.E.M, and Pearl Jam to name a few. . .

from ‘Grunge & Glory’ shot by Steven Meisel {US Vogue / c. December 1992}

Flannel plaid, cardigans, army boots, ripped jeans – you’d have to be living under a rock to not be able to characterize this style, especially considering every mainstream fashion brand from Los Angeles to Seoul are touting the trend . . .

We say it time and time again, but style is absolutely cyclical. That’s why we always promote our mantra of seeking the {past} to influence the {present} and shape the {future}. I really wonder what Oprah would be crusading against these days . . . there would definitely be plenty of material for her to draw from.

Enough said, however, let’s take a look at just how much Oprah hates GRUNGE!

Makes me wonder what she would say about Grunge now? She really seemed to be not into that. Like, when she questions those cool black leather witch boots the teenage daughter gave her Mother in her own 90s Grunge Makeover.

The worst part is – they never look better!!! I totally prefer their personal sense of style over the manufactured cookie cutter that Oprah seems to be tied to, sadly.

Fun, nonetheless! Tell us what you think in the comments below!

Until next time,

1980’s French Psychic Predicts 9/11, Obama Presidency, & 2012 Alien Encounters!

capturedcran20120113133We stumbled onto this video full of revelations this morning.

We were astonished by the blatant similarities that mark our present, that this French psychic, who’s name is unclear  (either Albert Florintie or Sean Mciver),  told of back in 1980. With talking of ‘Change’ and clear references to  Chernobyl, we knew we found something for our readers to Eye.

Full of eerie warnings of nuclear powered disasters in the coming decades, and warnings of us crippled by our need for fossil fuels, we were a bit disturbed by the accuracies we are warned of in our impending future including talk of religious wars, and promises of an attack on American soil.

The predictions weren’t only doom and gloom: visions of electric cars on the way, change in America, even a revolution by the People. The most interesting of all has to be the vision of a “black man” becoming President of the most powerful country in the World.

Hoax or not, we are intrigued.  The most alarming revelation of the future would have to be the impending encounter we will face with ‘People from another Galaxy”.  Perhaps this will be a lesson to man kind, and we will see the flaws in our ways and become stronger than ever.

Or, as this French Psychic seems to think . . . impending doom of mankind will surely come our way in 2012.

Slavery in the WhiteHouse!? Ci.

We have always been on the Michelle Obama bandwagon,  and we’re not even American! We don’t care where she’s taking us, but as the American Presidential Elections draw near, it’s the latest controversy which has us nostalgic for the days of interest over her trim arms, and healthy food initiatives.

Appearing on the cover of the August 2012 issue of Spanish magazine, Fuera de Serie, is a nude portrait of American First Lady Michelle Obama.

Well to be clear, appearing on the cover of the August 2012 issue of Spanish magazine, Fuera de Serie,  is an image by Artist Karine Percheron-Daniels  with First Lady Michelle Obama’s face super imposed over a pre-exsisting Marie-Guillemine Benoist‘s painting “Portrait d’une négresse.”

Benoist painted the portrait in 1800 as a social commentary on France’s sexism and racism during the 19th century. Historians also view the piece of art as the beginning of the country’s feminist movement.

So perhaps the comparison is more fitting than not?  Albeit a number of sites have called the cover inappropriate because it depicts the First Lady in imagery closely associated with slavery.
It wasn’t too long ago that the Benoist painting was used as a reference for a shoe campaign by red-souled Christian Louboutin in 2011.  So we ask what’s more shocking? Using the image of a ‘slave’ to push politics, or sell shoes?

Also, this wouldn’t be the first piece by the artist to cause such a scandal by Karine Percheron-Daniels.  She has done previous portraits of Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn, Eva Peron, Albert Einstein, and even Barack Obama and Michael Jackson in the buff.  Somehow this latest nod to the first lady seem’s to of launched the artist into mainstream conversation.

After the controversial piece hit the net, the artist released a statement via their website to address any haters or misunderstanders, Saying;

“If any of you have found this piece of art insulting I would like to say that my GENUINE intention was never to chock or upset anyone.This has COMPLETELY got lost in translation. I created this picture as part of a series of other famous  nudes.  As an artist I only paint and create pictures of people I admire and feel passionate about. Michelle Obama is one of these people. In my eyes , the picture I created here is of a beautiful woman with a beautiful message : The first Lady of America  in the first time in history is a black woman who proudly and confidently displays her WOMANHOOD (the nude) her ROOTS (the slave)  and her POWER(the First Lady of America embraced by the American flag). This picture, is a celebration of EVERYTHING GOOD, it is a celebration af achievement and in my opinion is not a racist slur. I am not a racist: I admire people regardless of their colour and this picture was meant to be a tribute….totally lost in translation. With my art I try to show beauty  NOT DIRT.”

Here at the Eye of Faith, we can appreciate the historic references for all these images, but when it comes to this one of the First Lady… we are left wondering, what would Michelle Obama say?

We wouldn’t leave you hanging without a touch of style inspiration a la you know who.  Let’s keep celebrating Independence on this 5th of July.

Unhate Campaign 2011 – United States of Benetton

Came across an article from the Daily Mail regarding The United Colors of Benetton’s newest scandal of a campaign! I love how they’re always stirring the pot.

Benetton is not new to controversy- this is just what they do! Gotta love a company who can stand up for what they believe in, whether it sells them sweaters or not.

I actually love the message of this campaign. It’s part of the Unhate campaign from Benetton, and I think the photos perfectly capture the idea of moving past our racial, religious, and political identities and uniting us strong!

It definitely shocks me in a way, don’t get me wrong, but there are some things in life too important to shy our eyes away from! That’s what makes them great (Plus- who were the actors?).

There seems to be a lot of buzz about this, so let us know what you think! Leave a comment 🙂
