{STYLE IDOL} PAUL NEWMAN, THE UNFORGETTABLE

“A man with no enemies is a man with no character”
-Paul Newman

+PAUL LEONARD NEWMAN+

{January 26, 1925 – September 26, 2008}

+

Just the other day we celebrated what would have been Paul Newman’s 95th birthday, because time and time again he is emphasized as God of Style, and to be honest. . . its hard to disagree with public opinion on that! Even legendary Hollywood film director Elia Kazan had to point out his unbearable good look which to him rivaled the God of Male Hollywood Beauty himself: MARLON BRANDO!

Late July 1953

To Budd Schulberg

I’m not insane about Brando for this. In fact, in my opinion he is quite wrong. But he’s a fine actor and if he’s really excited about it and will work like a beginner trying to get a start, he can be fine. He’s got to be hungry and anxious. The power to be that disappears with your picture on an ad. If we don’t get Brando, I’m for Paul Newman. This boy will definitely be a film star. I have absolutely no doubt. He’s just as good looking as Brando, and his masculinity, which is strong, is also more actual. He’s not as good an actor as Brando yet, and probably will never be. But he’s a darn good actor with plenty of power, plenty of insides, plenty of sex.

{{PAUL NEWMAN’S SECRET SEX LIFE??}}

+ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK+

Well, indeed its hard to disagree from that gallery alone, but take a look at his life and work and be astonished by the wonder. . .

It’s hard to think of an actor today that embodies such poise, charm, scorching manliness, subtle sophistication,  remarkable gentility, and undeniable talent the way he does. He truly was a bona fide star in the way only Old Hollywood could make.

Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio – Newman had a penchant for acting from a young age, but like many young men at his time, he enlisted in the army (first as a pilot, but then shortly thereafter, transfered to the Navy division after discovering he was in fact, COLORBLIND), and after the war was done completed a Bachelor of the Arts back in Ohio.

Remarkably he landed a starring role in the Broadway production of Picnic (opposite of Kim Stanley who had won an Oscar for her role in Kazan’s A Streetcar Named Desire) in 1953, and it wasn’t long before Hollywood was calling. . . before he knew it, he was doing screen tests for the iconic film  East of Eden opposite the legend – JAMES DEAN!

Let us know if you feel the love the way we do!

FUN FACT: James Dean & Paul Newman are both AQUARIUS!

+B.A.E.+

[BIG AQUARIUS ENERGY]

The role would ultimately go to Richard Davalos, who was excellent in the film, who we previously worshiped on The Eye of Faith several years back.

His first ever Hollywood film would be 1954’s The Silver Chalice which James Dean had rejected for being dismal, and becoming a film Newman would publicly loathe for the rest of his life ! It wasn’t until 1955 when he landed the lead in the film  Somebody Up There Likes Me (alongside Rebel Without a Cause  star Sal Mineo) where he played a teenage hoodlum who turns his life around that he was able to display his natural acting prowess.

The same year he also starred in the film adaption of William Faulkner’s  The Long Hot Summer where he would meet the woman who would be his wife for 50 years  . . . Joanne Woodward (technically, they reunited as she had actually been an understudy in the broadway production of  Picnic )!

This film solidified him as a verified . . .

THIRST TRAP

Even by today’s standards.

From then on he would star in some incredibly poignant and iconic roles that helped define the fine tradition of high quality acting in Hollywood . . .  as well as completely solidifying his place as one of the most influential style icons of all time.

From his pyjamas in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,  battered denim in Cool Hand Luke, even cooler cowboy in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, to slick bad ass hustler in both  The Hustler and The Scent of Money – he is about as cool blue as his famous blue eyes. . .

The NOSCAR was made as a joke by Joanne Woodward after winning her OSCAR in 1958 for The Three Faces of Eve - in total he recieved 7 Academy Award nominations, winning an honorary Oscar (featured above) in 1986, ony to finally win Best Actor the next year for Martin Scorsese's sequel to The Hustler - The Color of Money. He also recieved the Jean Hirscholt Academy Award for his
 Humanitarian Efforts in Kenya.

“There are two Newman’s laws. The first one is “It is useless to put on your brakes when you’re upside down.” The second is “Just when things look darkest, they go black.”

Paul Newman

Timeless and classic beyond compare . . . he can also be seen taking advantage of all facets of mens fashion and style from scarves, cravets, ties, watches, and necklaces . . .  all applied with nonchalant confidence and sophistication!

“The embarrassing thing is my salad dressing is out-grossing my films”

ARE YOU A SELF-CONSCIOUS GUY? Vintage Educational PSA Film {c. 1951}

Had a lot of fun posting “Shy-Guy” yesterday, so thought we’d continue showcasing some of these awesome and entertaining vintage educational films. They sure were worried about the self-esteem of teenagers.

This one shows how feelings of self-consciousness keep a high school boy from doing his classwork well or making friends easily. Poor dude feels so out of whack ALL THE TIME, until he realizes everyone else feels self-conscious too and if you learn to remind yourself of this, you will be fine!

And when he realizes this watching his buddy totally goof at ping pong after just being so dashing in a tuxedo, he should have realized that of course he felt better wearing a tux! Who doesn’t feel bad ass in a tux?!

Again, a great collection of classic American style from the early 1950s which still has that timeless 40s vibe lingering. This is a look that seems to be really permeating in the fashion world more and more lately. . .

Especially couldn’t take my eye off a wicked panther graphic sweater one of the featured students wears while yacking on the phone with confidence…check it out! The panther motif is a super bad ass graphic that was quite popular, and today, a very rare vintage find.

We featured a good looking Vintage Panther Graphic Sweater on The Eye of Faith years ago, but you can totally see this EXACT look for a hefty price point from Alessandro Michele over at GUCCI!

Love anyone bringing vintage styles to the masses, but its always good to know your shit and see the influences in the world around us. This is how the {PAST} helps inspire the {PRESENT} and shape our {FUTURE}.

Well enough ado. Thanks OLD TIME TV for uploading this and all the other wicked vintage content you post on your channel!

Please enjoy and let us know what you thought in the COMMENTS BELOW!

E.O.F. SNAPSHOT OF THE DAY {DECEMBER 2, 2016}

Subject Unknown.

+ MYSTERY DAPPER DUDE+

{circa. 1940s}

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead —his eyes are closed.

-Albert Einstein {source}

Exploring a plethora of vintage style inspiration in unexpected places.

Vernacular imagery gives us a sense of time and place, while also creating a relatability between us and the subject matter through the elusive mystery of the moment. As the Godfather of fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, proclaimed “What i like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce”; so it is the instantaneous feeling held forever in time by light and precious metal taken in the {past} forever capturing the {present} forever beheld into the {future}.

That’s what truly has drawn us to vernacular imagery all these years, and has always been a huge foundation to our perception of style. While we are often worshiping the idols of golden ages past, it is the hidden mystery of unknown faces that truly inspires us and gives us a real sense of the spirit of style that permeates through the generations.

Take this Mystery Dapper Dude for instance – his face is blurred, there is a strange anomaly in the top right corner, and yet, this image is as fashion-centric as a spread in GQ (with a little more panache). You can tell he is handsome, but it is his nonchalant style that truly stands out. Mix of patterns, classic cool – its all happening, and always will, thanks to the magic of the moment.

Who says we can’t time travel?

Until next time,

Commercial Break: Hiroshi Teshigahara’s “Woman in the Dunes” Trailer

If you’re looking for horror, sex, and a little intrigue look no further than this incredible cult classic from 1964: Hiroshi Teshigahara’s “Woman in the Dunes”. This art house film that could would garner Teshigahara an Academy Award nomination for Best Director in 1967 (he was beat by Robert Wise for “The Sound of Music”).

It’s a strange story, one first told by Japanese author Kôbô Abe (who also wrote the film’s screenplay) in the hugely successful novel by the same name. This is 1960s cinema at its finest and absolutely darkest. It’s also the kind of film that you wish was made now; a film that is provocative, lingering, sexy, intellectual, and above-all screams style!

So if you enjoy films with a core, and our thirst for the strange you’ll definitely appreciate this one.  There’s little blood, and definitely no ghosts, but there’s definitely something creepy that lurks with you long after the movie has ended. Trust us on this one and grab a copy from Amazon today!

 “The most frightening thing in the world is to discover the abnormal in that which is closest to us.”

+STYLE STAR+ ANDRE JUDD: PROPHET OF FASHION

If you’re a fan of Lookbook, or have ever had the chance to browse the online showcase of individual styles gathered to help foster the “collective fashion consciousness” that Lookbook is all about. While glancing past looks by a self proclaimed Mermaid from Neverland you are bound to stumble across this true one-of-a-kind Prophet of Fashion.

Just when you thought style couldn’t get more exciting or gloriously out-of-control you will meet Andre Judd. Andre treads the lines of dreaming and reality with a panache and attention to detail rivalling some of fashion’s greats. Time and time again, Andre has proved that the art of dressing is as much an art as any.

This type of talent is rare, and very few can achieve his bold unique punch of imagination, virtual reality, and pure abandon.  So, naturally we felt the need to connect with the Stylist, Designer, and Fashion Blogger Extraordinaire who answered a few of our questions on life, style, inspiration, and the unique fashion-forward fashion scene of Manila!

Most of all, we felt Andre was the perfect example of what we here at The Eye of Faith are always harping on about and that’s the courage to find inspiration and be your truest self to the highest extent.

“We see something new. Something exciting”

-Andre Judd.

EOF: There seems to be a lot of excitement and intrigue in the world of fashion in the Philippines. What would surprise or excite people most about the Filipino fashion scene?

AJ: Indeed. Every season we see new bright young talents emerge. These designers score high on the critics and fashion press because they have a refined focus on aesthetics as well being commercial.

I think what excites Filipinos about the fashion scene, is that every season it gets better and better. We see something new, something exciting.

EOF: Where would you say the epicentre of Filipino fashion is right now in the Philippines? Any favourite go-to spots?

AJ: Manila is considered the current fashion epicenter, drawing in designers from different parts of the country, as well as Filipino designers based abroad. There are a lot of cool retail shops and boutiques to check out in Manila. Top of my mind is Greenbelt 5, where a few concentrated stores are found selling current collections from my favourite local designers.

EOF: We love how many looks you create, and your undeniable knowledge for style. Who taught you these secrets? God, or deal with the Devil?

AJ: God. Definitely 🙂

EOF: What has been your most important lesson in life when it comes to your own personal brand of style?

AJ: Never say never. It’s my mantra ever since.

EOF: Creating so many complex and detailed looks must be quite the task. What is your secret to staying focused?

AJ: It’s not really hard. I wake up every morning with a strong idea on what I would wear.

EOF: You mix a lot of items one might typically prescribe as masculine or feminine, and it seems once they get the Andre Judd touch, it’s neither. Instead, it’s a whole new brand of cool. What do you call this?
AJ: Some call it non-conventional, others call it androgynous, but I call it post-modern and irreverent 🙂

“Fashion is about change”

-Andre Judd.

EOF: Interesting shapes, textures, and patterns are essential ingredients to your fashion magic. Do you have any tips on incorporating these ideas into one’s everyday style?
AJ: Try playing with shapes, textures, and patterns. For the novice, one can start with just one different detail. Like if you love black, why not play with colour – lets say fuchsia, and combine it with black. If you like wearing block colors, why not try a printed top? It’s the idea of adapting to new things. After all, fashion is about change. You don’t need to sacrifice your style, you just simply like it to evolve 🙂

EOF: You’ve accidentally conjured up an angry spirit who won’t get the hell out of your closet. You want to call the cops, but you know they won’t believe you so you pull out your exorcism kit and go to work. What is the one thing you are hoping to save from your wardrobe?
AJ: Oh my, toughest question ever. I’d pick my accessories box. You can do wonders to your look just by adding a necklace or a brooch.

EOF: What is your favourite vintage find, and why do you think your devils approve?

AJ: Its my Gianni Versace bomber jacket from the 80s.  You wouldn’t believe how super cheap I got it. Its my number one treasured find because its real leather, it has chain mail, looks very contemporary,  the color of the leather goes with anything, and it gives an instant edge to any look.

EOF: We have received a lot of botched up advice on fashion in our lives, but we have always stayed pure to what is inside. What is the worst fashion advice you’ve ever been given?

AJ: Men shouldn’t wear women’s clothing.

EOF: For us, fashion is definitely an escape, and the style or look we wear is the story being told. You are an expert in storytelling, with a seemingly eternal well of inspiration. With almost 400 looks on LOOKBOOK, dark we ask – do you have a favourite?

AJ: Every new look I post is my favourite.

EOF: Here at The Eye of Faith, we like to think of ourselves as soldiers marching for a better tomorrow. Are there any causes or struggles in your life that you are fighting for?

AJ: I am a huge advocate of Filipino fashion so as much as I can I like to wear Filipino designers in my looks. That way I can help promote their names in the international scene via LOOKBOOK.

EOF: What sort of things can the readers of The Eye of Faith expect from Andre Judd in the future?

AJ: Expect the unexpected 🙂

‘Concision in Style, Precision in Thought, Decision in Life”

You may have noticed those immortal words when browsing through our ABOUT US page, although the phrase is more like this:

+ CONCISIONEM STYLO, ACCURATIUS CORDE, IUDICARI VITA +

Since our inception, these words have helped build the foundations for creating The Eye of Faith, and we never forgot them along the way.

Patrick Bateman Loves Les Mis

Wise words from an icon in his own right,  Victor Hugo (and I’m not too sure if he would be one for musicals ) . . . but none the less, his “concision in style, precision in thought, and decision in life”, have made him and his work relevant to this very day!

It’s quite wild how the past comes and goes, and is brought back to life again. Inspiration finds it’s way through the cracks of your mind to infiltrate your thoughts and create something special. This comes into play every time you make your way into your own wardrobe, for example. You stare at your clothes and an idea might come to your mind, and thus a new look, and a new you is born!

The Eye of Faith Boys

While our motto  CONCISIONEM STYLO, ACCURATIUS CORDE, IUDICARI VITA (it just sounds so F***ing good in Latin) has carried us far the past year, most mysterious 2014, we have a few new thoughts for the year ahead, and some new virtues we want to inherit and inspire for 2015.

+KNOWLEDGE+

The chemical preparation of Aurum Portabile (Sadeler II, Kilian, Geiger)

+KNOWLEDGE+ has always been an important piece of the puzzle here at The Eye, and for our frequent followers and visitors, you have come to expect in our approach an appreciation for history and all it’s secrets and quirks. We love to expose the {PAST} and examine where it fits into the {PRESENT} and hopefully, using our age defying wisdom, we can summarize a likely {FUTURE}.

Much like the alchemists and sorcerers of the past, the gaining and collecting of knowledge, every little bit no matter how esoteric, is a vital aspect of one’s true power, for when the time comes and all you are left to is you and you alone, you can count on yourself to follow through! Whether we’re talking life or fashion, no one is ever going to blame you for knowing too much.

We hope to continue in this vein, and bring you more and more vintage memories and musings that can both inspire and inform.

+INTEGRITY+

Blame it on the Gang (from THE EYE OF FAITH rules)

Since we began creating The Eye of Faith, we have been told a million and one things we should be doing instead. Everyone and their mother has had an opinion on our vision, without even asking what that vision may be!

We came into this game knowing full well who we were, and what we intended to accomplish. You don’t see another site quite like The Eye of Faith online, and that is a good thing. We are not trying to fall into place behind other fashion blogs (most of which look the same) who recycle content from site to site, but we wanted to be true innovators on the scene. This dedication to our vision, and always standing by it without changing it to appease naysayers is why we have ruled +INTEGRITY+ as a continuing priority here at The Eye of Faith.

The Eye of Faith was conceived as a portal to the past with many seemingly disparate items, articles, and stories coming together to create a well-rounded vision of how little things have changed, and how cool the past really was! This will continue NOT to change.

We will also not be picking any random articles of vintage clothing to add to the collection. Nothing is arbitrary, and each piece speaks to a certain story or style we are aiming to incorporate into the vision of the collection as a whole. Believe us, it’s not as easy as it sounds! It’s called +INTEGRITY+

+COURAGE+

The Spirit of Contemplation (1901) by Albert Toft {1862 - 1949}
The Spirit of Contemplation (1901) by Albert Toft {1862 – 1949}

+COURAGE+ has always been our silent leader when it came to creating The Eye of Faith. In fact, the whole idea of the The Eye of Faith encapsulates this virtue entirely.

The Eye of Faith is an age old symbol of +COURAGE+, and by the pure belief in matters at hand, and some proper insight, one may be given sight to see the way to get to one’s destiny. It’s a silent pathway, but a strong one, and without proper reinforcement your trail could just wither into the wind before your eyes and you would be left to find your way without the guidance of the fates. . .

The latter is a path many of choose in life, but since we are beings with a choice, we definitely chose to trust that The Eye of Faith will get us where we belong.

It took a lot of +COURAGE+ to stand up and tell those we know and love our belief in it, but it definitely seems to be paying off, with everyday us getting stronger and stronger.

+STRENGTH+

Have Strength Poor Child

+STRENGTH+ comes in many forms. We need it constantly; in the physical sense, to keep up the hustle of getting our pieces from one place to another, and even more so in the emotional and spiritual sense, when it seems like you’ll never figure it all out.

Truth is, you’re never going to figure it all out, so best stop wasting your energy on that one . . .

Having +STRENGTH+ of mind is more powerful than any fist when it comes to life. Creeping deep down into oneself and building +STRENGTH+ from within is your best start. From there, everything else will seem like a cinch!

+IMAGINATION+

Imagination Psychedellia

I once read somewhere that +IMAGINATION+ is more important than +KNOWLEDGE+

But I don’t think that is quite true, as much as learning to utilize both to one’s advantage can be the most powerful tool of all.

+IMAGINATION+ is quite literally the God-Sense in all of us. If you seek the divine in the everyday all you need do is open a pad of paper and sketch, or write for an hour about any old thing, even messing about your wardrobe will suffice. It is simply that beautiful magical moment where your brain has decided to create something new, and completely you.

You are a well of ideas and inspirations, and once you are able to tap into that spring, you might find your true self overflowing!

+ + +

So there you have it!

Our five newly anointed principles that can be used not just for your style sensibilities, but use them in life, as well. If you use them right, the transformations will happen almost immediately.

Feel free to adapt our Rules to fit your own life, or simply come up with a few of your own.

What means most to you? In the end, that’s all that matters. We know what we need to do to survive, and we’re going to definitely be making it happen! So hopefully some of our words of wisdom have rubbed off a bit, and we can all make things happen together!

Take The Oath of The Eye

From the bottom of my cool blazing heart,
