Hamilton Vintage Community Pop Up {Oct 28 @ Spice Factory #hamont}

When we first moved back to Hamilton, we never expected our humble hometown would turn into such a vintage mecca!

Just last year, our friends at Vintage Soul Geek provided some of their impeccable vintage garments for the filming of a little movie called “The Shape of Water” which was both nominated for Best Costume Design, and went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards amongst many other accolades.

With such a rich history, its not surprising that Hamilton, Ontario is full of true love for the vintage lifestyle. After all, we are all shopping at the same mall or big box shops to see the same things – derivatives of vintage styles whether it be furniture, decor, accessories, or fashion! Why spend your money on cheap, expensive, knock-offs when you can get the real thing ?!

That’s why, we are so excited to be taking part in the Hamilton Vintage Community Pop-Up this Sunday October 28 at The Spice Factory from 10a – 4p! With over 40+ vintage vendors, plus free admission, we know we are looking forward to a brilliant day of vintage shopping, and meeting and making connections with fellow vintage lovers in the city.

We will have a rack of select mens and women’s clothing priced as low as $5, so definitely if you are looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon, be sure to check it out! Here’s a link to the event:

Follow Hamilton Vintage Community of Instagram!

This group is a lovely community of vintage lovers so if that’s your jam, be sure to check them out on Facebook also.

Hope to see you Sunday! And if you aren’t local and still want to shop, visit us on Etsy in our {SHOP}. XIXIXI gets you 25% OFF.

KYLIE + TRAVIS vs. JANE + SERGE

Since the beginning of time (or at least, the beginning of our blog) we have been saying there is a definitive relationship our collective {PAST} plays into the {PRESENT} – always influencing and helping create what inevitably will be known as the {FUTURE}!

Well here we have a case of {PAST}, {PRESENT}, {FUTURE} featuring the notoriously infamous billionairess Kylie Jenner and her new man, Crown Prince of Rap, Mr. Travis Scott on the latest cover of GQ causing controversy for being a “cheap rip-off” of  a now forty year old photo shoot of iconic French couple of cool Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin shot by Helmut Newton.

It is absolutely undeniable, and I don’t think they were trying to be chill about the inspiration, or rather recreation, but who is to judge her for that. If anything, I find it strange that Paola Kudacki, the photographer, would feel comfortable putting her name on such a mainstream copy of the work of a great artist like Helmut Newton! Now the controversy has flooded the internet, but then again, for the right paycheck these days, a little backlash isn’t the worst if it pays the rent.

Obviously, inspiration from the past is one of the cornerstones of our beliefs, but being 2018, it might be nice to have a fresher interpretation of the past than just a flat out copy. Where’s the fun in that?

Take the past, and turn it on its head. Blend one influence with another. Go on a ride through the past and bring me forward into the future…

And if you take a look at the original photo series shot way back in 1978, the rawness, sexiness, and coolness really shines through! How can you be a rebel if you’re trying….Serge and Jane are just so relaxed, irreverent, and thereby: BAD ASS!

Needless to say, Jane and Serge will always be on top in most versus situations, so….sorry Travis and Kylie- maybe next time. And maybe next time, just be yourself!!!

I know Travis and Kylie have turned a few looks, but Jane and Serge really TURNED LOOKS! Just a few below!

We need more originality these daze . . . be inspired, but make it your own! That’s half the fun of life.

Not the most creative choice, but different strokes for different folks! Definitely appreciate her bringing to a whole new generation the beauty and boldness of Serge & Jane (who are definitely due for a {STYLE IDOL & DIVINITY} post or a {VINTAGE RED CARPET ROMANCES} story) … that is a really cool thing.

We know this story is all over the internet right now, but still wanted to give our E.O.F. P.O.V. on the whole situation.

So, let us know what you think in the comments section below!

I DON’T NEED YOU TO TELL ME I’M BEAUTIFUL! I KNOW I’M BEAUTIFUL!!!

Fresh off our VMP DRAG FASHION FLAUNT at this year’s Vintage Marketplace, we can’t stop thinking about how incredible drag queens are, especially those of the {PAST} who paved the way for the {PRESENT} culture and creativity and will continue to invoke its {FUTURE}.

We know everyone who is anyone keeps up with RuPaul’s Drag Race, and the past season’s ALL STARS edition featured a wickedly hilarious Snatch Game that had Brooklyn babe AJA take on one of Herstory’s most legendary queens – founder of the House of LaBeija, and star of the cult 1968 documentary “The Queen”, Crystal LaBeija!

+GET A TASTE+

And she took her on with gusto and glamour, and also delivered this beautiful spirit back into the forum of the mainstream…much in the way Jinx Monsoon brought us Little Edie of “Grey Gardens”, and Sasha Velour took on Marlene Dietrich; keeping these divinities alive for younger generations is absolutely key!

How sad it is when you hear a young man or woman denote they have no idea who these iconic legends are . . . stay educated, kids!

“The Queen” is a fabulous film directed by Frank Simon, and provides an up close and candid look at the behind of the scenes of the 1967 All-America Camp Beauty Contest in New York City. It is a wonderful portrait of a time gone by. . . New York City is rough and tough, and men from all around America shack up in tiny hotel rooms in anticipation of the pageant discussing the difficulties of being gay in America. They are all fabulous, and its wonderful to see their final transformations from the male versions of them you see in rehearsals. This transformation truly proves the power of style and image to invoke strength from within.

Illustrated herstory by Laurel Lynn-Leake

By far, the most fabulous moment has to be Crystal’s freak out when she is named fourth place storms out and then rips everyone a new one backstage. Absolutely ICONIC…you are going to have to see it to believe it! And if you are a fan of Drag Race, you will really appreciate what Aja brought to the table even more.

We stumbled upon a full version of the film on Youtube, so check it out below and enjoy!

+Look out for Andy Warhol’s cameo (he was a judge in the pageant)+

Did you know Frank Ocean sampled Crystal Labeija ???

We love moments like this in pop culture where the {PAST} races into the {PRESENT} and ultimately shapes our {FUTURE}. . .  rebel queens like Crystal LaBeija will live on far past those who chose not to be the truest, most incredible versions of themselves.

I don’t need you to tell me I’m beautiful! I KNOW I’M BEAUTIFUL!!!

And really, we should all fell this way! Screw the haters- you rock!

Listen to that spirit within you, and let it free…

Until next time,

{MUSIC MINUTE} “I’d Rather Be Burned As A Witch” by Eartha Kitt

1

witch

noun \ ˈwich \
1: one that is credited with usually malignant supernatural powers; especially : a woman practicing usually black witchcraft often with the aid of a devil or familiar : sorceress — compare warlock
2 : an ugly old woman : hag
3 : a charming or alluring girl or woman
4 : an adherent of Wicca

The word witch derives from the Old English nouns wicca Old English pronunciation: [ˈwɪttʃɑ] (‘sorcerer, male witch’) and wicce Old English pronunciation: [ˈwɪttʃe] (‘sorceress, female witch’). Thanks Wikipedia!

The origins, really, are much more complicated and mysterious, of course. For many centuries this term was used a blanket term for outsiders in society; people who didn’t fit the mould of the status-quo. Outrageously, these free spirits were often burned at the stake!

HOW RUDE?!!!

Lord knows if these were different times, we’d be right on that stake with the best of them!

Eartha Kitt does a fabulous job of playing with the stereotype and society’s perceived notions in this song, and especially give it up to bosslady1971 for a wicked compilation of witches in popular culture to go along with what is sure to be one of the highlights of your playlist!

Do Enjoy!

I’d rather be burned as a Witch than never be burned at all!!!

OPRAH’S CRUSADE AGAINST GRUNGE!

{Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage}

The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.

-Oprah Winfrey

Since the Golden Globes, Oprah is on everyone’s mind after a poignant acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony which has gone as far as having people saying “OPRAH FOR PRESIDENT!”

The model for elegant maturity and refinement for most, it has come to our attention that this Queen of the Screen really fought hard against something we totally take for granted – GRUNGE STYLE!!!

That’s right people. I think Oprah hates GRUNGE; that iconic style that emerged from the late 80s which rejected the gloss and polish of mainstream fashion for a more relaxed, tattered and easy vibe and was popularized by designers Marc Jacobs and bands like Nirvana, R.E.M, and Pearl Jam to name a few. . .

from ‘Grunge & Glory’ shot by Steven Meisel {US Vogue / c. December 1992}

Flannel plaid, cardigans, army boots, ripped jeans – you’d have to be living under a rock to not be able to characterize this style, especially considering every mainstream fashion brand from Los Angeles to Seoul are touting the trend . . .

We say it time and time again, but style is absolutely cyclical. That’s why we always promote our mantra of seeking the {past} to influence the {present} and shape the {future}. I really wonder what Oprah would be crusading against these days . . . there would definitely be plenty of material for her to draw from.

Enough said, however, let’s take a look at just how much Oprah hates GRUNGE!

Makes me wonder what she would say about Grunge now? She really seemed to be not into that. Like, when she questions those cool black leather witch boots the teenage daughter gave her Mother in her own 90s Grunge Makeover.

The worst part is – they never look better!!! I totally prefer their personal sense of style over the manufactured cookie cutter that Oprah seems to be tied to, sadly.

Fun, nonetheless! Tell us what you think in the comments below!

+ FAVOURITE FIND + VIVA MAGAZINE {circa. January 1976}

VIVA MAGAINE: The International Woman’s Magazine {circa. January 1977}

Cover Photograph by the iconic HELMUT NEWTON (hence, the undoubtable chic-ness of this image).  Published by icons Bob Guccione and Kathy Keeton of PENTHOUSE fame, this is a prime piece of classic porn chic.

First coined in a highly influential New York Times article in 1973, porno chic describes a distinct period between 1969 and 1984 where American pornos were hitting the mainstream consciousness and pocketbooks hardcore. Andy Warhol kicked it off in 69 with Blue Movie, and films like Deep Throat, Behind the Green Door, Caligula, The Opening of Misty Beehtoven, A Night at the Adonis, and Flesh Gordon are among the films that encapsulate the Golden Age of Porn.

But it wasn’t just about the films. This period also saw a surge of amazing publishing prowess seen by magazines like PLAYBOY, HUSTLER, OUI, and of course PENTHOUSE dominated the scene, but for the first time publishers turned their attention to the female gaze, and offered pleasures like PLAYGIRL and VIVA with the male form objectified freely and openly to ease the tensions of the day.

I know it seems cliche to say, but its about the articles, too! Especially adult magazines of this period, you will find some powerful political, cultural, and historical content that just can’t be beat! Some of the articles included in this VIVA Magazine include:

The Blue Angel: Inside New York’s Naughtiest Night Club
Minnie Riperton Raps About Fashion
The Real Brenda Vaccaro
The Naked Cowboy
Dustin Hoffman & Robert Redford on set of “All the President’s Men”
Do You Have What It Takes to Be Happy?

Not going to lie; what really stood out to us was the top story on the cover: HOW TO MAKE LOVE LIKE A WITCH!

The things they targeted their demographics with back in these times is fantastic! Imagine if they had published topics like this today?? People would have a fit! But, seriously we need more of this!

That’s just what makes this piece so god damn amusing. Keep pieces like this for entertaining treats for your guests- some pop culture, history, and a little eye candy.

They don’t make them like they used to …

And I always get a kick with cigarette ads from this period. They are always so special and great. Like this one:

Just out in the park picking flowers and placing them in my pretty flower basket and smoking a cigarette. . .

+LADY BE COOL+

I don’t know how things have taken such a drastic turn. It’s rather sad, really…but luckily, we do have pieces like this to remind us of these lost times.

This is a rare item especially considering the super sensual and chic Helmut Newton cover, and VIVA being of lesser popularity as PLAYBOY or even PLAYGIRL. If you have any questions? Send us a message to the.eye.of.faith@gmail.com

The party is never over . . .

Come, blessed Dionysus [Dionysos], various nam’d, bull-fac’d,

begot from Thunder, Bacchus [Bakkhos] fam’d.

Bassarian God, of universal might, whom swords, and blood, and sacred rage delight:

In heav’n rejoicing, mad, loud-sounding God, furious inspirer, bearer of the rod:

By Gods rever’d, who dwell’st with human kind, propitious come, with much-rejoicing mind.

{WEIRD T.V.} “Silent Twins: Without My Shadow” (1994)

So, its probably safe to say we all love a break from the status-quo when it comes to what to watch . . . we are all fed the same things via Netflix, cable, etc. but sometimes you find yourself thirsting for something off the beaten path that truly quenches that need for the weird, the wonderful, and the strange!

That’s why we are starting this new series we aptly have named {WEIRD T.V.}!

We know many of you fine viewers continue to come back to our site because we aim to offer something a bit more eclectic and unique than your average blog, and have been searching the depths of the interwebs for gems dying to be rediscovered!

We’re gonna present the first video in this series, “Silent Twins: Without My Shadow” which was a BBC special that premiered in 1994 about the strange case of  June and Jennifer Gibbons AKA The Silent Twins.

The bizarre story of these twin girls from the UK first caught our eye on the vlogosphere with several Youtubers telling the strange tale, but this first-hand account includes amazing insight from doctors and journalists who followed the girls’ case since they were young, as well as their parents, and remarkable excerpts from their many journals and short stories.

We don’t want to reveal too much, because the story truly unfolds in such an odd and fantastic way that you really just have to give yourself over to this oddity of a tale.

The story is UNBELIEVABLE! So, If you need a good weird before bed something to watch – this is IT!!!

Alas, we hope you enjoy our first entry into our {WEIRD T.V.} category, and hope you come back for more!
