THE EYE OF FAITH 2018: FALL UPDATE !!!

Wow, this summer was a wild ride for us!!! From manning the Supercrawl Pop-Up Shop right in the heart of Downtown Hamilton, helping rep local fashion artists, as well as creating our most exciting collection to date, “The Visitors”,  using some flashy vintage fabrics we have accumulated over the years (pictures to be posted soon)!

But, as you know, there is no rest for the wicked and we have quite a few things simmering this Fall!

We were honoured to host a Spice Girls / 90s Karaoke at Toast Wine Bar in conjunction with the screening of “Spice World” for the AGH BMO World Film Festival. Of course, we continue our Karaoke Cabaret residency at The Casbah every second and fourth (October 23) Tuesday, and we have a very special Halloween karaoke on Oct 31 at the legendary Sous Bas! So if you are in Hamilton, ON, and need to let loose on All Hallow’s Eve, be sure to stop by!!!

Now, of course, we have some really cool fashion events coming up also. This Sunday (October 28), we will be participating in the Hamilton Vintage Community Pop-Up at The Spice Factory, with 40+ vendors, drinks, and loads of vintage shopping !!!

We can’t wait…we will have a unique assortment of vintage mens, vintage womens, and some of our one of a kind, handmade pieces made using vintage materials. We will be bringing some wicked pieces priced as low as $5, so don’t miss out!

Also, we have a very exciting fashion presentation for the Hamilton Film Festival at the Zoetic Theatre, where will be a presenting in a show inspired by “Darkness” – which couldn’t be more up our alley! Our looks will be showcased to film industry professionals who hopefully will take a liking to our designs!

After all, just a few years ago; Guillermo Del Toro filmed his Academy Award wining film “The Shape of Water” right here in our city, so you never know!!!

Always put your best foot forward, in life . . .  which leads us to our next project, which we will save for another post. A GRAND ANNOUNCEMENT . . . stay tuned!!!

So, apologies that we haven’t been able to sit down and share some of the cool vintage musings and memories we have been collecting in a while, but as you can see, our life has been pretty hectic, but rest assured, we will be getting back into the swing of things once the dust has settled.

Thank you for checking us out, and for those who have followed us for years, thank you so much for your support! It means EVERYTHING.

We just uploaded about 30 new pieces in our {SHOP} last week, so be sure to check those out and use code XIXIXI for 25% OFF.

E.O.F. SPRING 2018 UPDATE!

Greetings friends and followers!

It’s been a while since we’ve posted on here, so we thought we owed something to the gods of the internet! I can’t believe its been almost 7 years of us having this blog, and all the incredible things it has led us to, we couldn’t even have imagined on that fateful night we created it.

These incredible things, however, lead us to be very busy and it makes it hard to get time to create the content we know you love! So, here a little catch-up with everything we have been up to!

Spring always seems to be a busy time for us, and we have been up to some fun things. Currently we are creating a collection for one of our city’s biggest fashion events, Glamour in the Hammer. It is a wonderful event that helps support the incredible philanthropic efforts of the Good Shepherd and promoting the long history of giving they have done for those in need.

If you are in the area, tickets are still available, and are going fast! Ticket includes a fabulous fashion show featuring the city’s top designers, as well as drinks and eats from the city’s top restaurants. Definitely not to be missed. {click here for tickets}

This year, our collection +WUTHERING HEIGHTS+ hopes to bring a romantic edge to the grunge aesthetic inspired by the ghostly mood of the English moors, combining vintage fabrics and street chic style for many new one-of-a-kind pieces to add to the many creations we have made over the past {click here to see them}.

As well, as preparing for that, we are also embarking on a voyage to the 1980s with our costume design for Hamilton Theatre Inc.’sThe Wedding Singer” which has been chalk full of its own challenges, but insanely fun to sort through weird and wild 80s party fashions. The silhouettes and details of that time period are just over-the-top, and that of course, we absolutely love! Again if you are in the area, {click here} to get tickets for a wickedly funny show! Show runs May 11 – May 26.

Last but not least, we are fresh from our annual collaboration with The Vintage Marketplace, which is our city’s biggest vintage shopping event. Whilst we were berated by a historical ice storm, the event was still a success with hundreds of people making it out to shop from a myriad of local vintage vendors, with many new faces, which is always great to see our little community growing in that respect.

On top of our booth, which we were very proud of in the end, we also had the honor of producing some entertainment for the weekend. What we came up with, we never could’ve foreseen, but it all seemed to make so much sense, and was a wild way to shake up our usual fashion show segment.

Instead of a retrospective fashion show, we created the VMP DRAG FASHION FLAUNT ft. Queen Costia Sterling and Sapphyre Poison. If only you could be there to see how fantastic this show was (or maybe you were, if so, leave a comment), the Queens delivered vintage inspired numbers that ranged from Rosemary Clooney, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and even a number from the iconic musical CHICAGO.

The most magical moment had to be when the many children who had come to the show gathered to watch the Queens, and the wonderful smiles on their faces as they watched the magic. Definitely a show for the books.

So, as you can see, we have been swamped with projects, but promise to get back more in the swing of posting on here. We have so many fabulous stories on the back burner that are just waiting to see the light of day, so definitely stay tuned…

If you have been missing us, be sure to follow us on INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, and FACEBOOK to stay up to date, and see what we are up to!

Remember we also have dozens of unique, one-of-a-kind, time traveled vintage pieces in our {SHOP} which is always changing, so do check it out, and remember to use code XIXIXI for 25% OFF at the checkout.

ARE YOU A SELF-CONSCIOUS GUY? Vintage Educational PSA Film {c. 1951}

Had a lot of fun posting “Shy-Guy” yesterday, so thought we’d continue showcasing some of these awesome and entertaining vintage educational films. They sure were worried about the self-esteem of teenagers.

This one shows how feelings of self-consciousness keep a high school boy from doing his classwork well or making friends easily. Poor dude feels so out of whack ALL THE TIME, until he realizes everyone else feels self-conscious too and if you learn to remind yourself of this, you will be fine!

And when he realizes this watching his buddy totally goof at ping pong after just being so dashing in a tuxedo, he should have realized that of course he felt better wearing a tux! Who doesn’t feel bad ass in a tux?!

Again, a great collection of classic American style from the early 1950s which still has that timeless 40s vibe lingering. This is a look that seems to be really permeating in the fashion world more and more lately. . .

Especially couldn’t take my eye off a wicked panther graphic sweater one of the featured students wears while yacking on the phone with confidence…check it out! The panther motif is a super bad ass graphic that was quite popular, and today, a very rare vintage find.

We featured a good looking Vintage Panther Graphic Sweater on The Eye of Faith years ago, but you can totally see this EXACT look for a hefty price point from Alessandro Michele over at GUCCI!

Love anyone bringing vintage styles to the masses, but its always good to know your shit and see the influences in the world around us. This is how the {PAST} helps inspire the {PRESENT} and shape our {FUTURE}.

Well enough ado. Thanks OLD TIME TV for uploading this and all the other wicked vintage content you post on your channel!

Please enjoy and let us know what you thought in the COMMENTS BELOW!

Take a look at some of the pieces waiting in our {SHOP} to be brought back to life on the streets that channel the “Self-Conscious Guy” vibe!

“All the Glitz and GLAMOUR IN THE HAMMER 2017”!!! Video by Style Group

In our society, it’s easy to take things for granted. Food, water, shelter- all things that we wouldn’t second guess or question as being a part of our lives, are for too many people, a day to day question of when, where, and how?

Here in Hamilton, Ontario many of these people in need are helped every year by The Good Shepherd who last year alone provided food and clothing for 61, 466 people, and not even including the thousands of tenants they shelter around the city.

For the past three years, we have had the honour of showcasing our own original vintage inspired collections at the Good Shepherd‘s fabulous night of fashion – “GLAMOUR IN THE HAMMER”.

This year the event sat upwards of 800 people, and showcased looks from 10 of the city’s unique designers including Blackbird Studios and a vintage retrospective from Milli’s boutique featuring some of the haute couture and designer fashions she has acquired over her many years providing luxury designer fashion in the steel city.

And in a society that is very focused on ‘self’ – it always feels good to feel compassion for people in need, and know that somehow through our passion for fashion we are able to help others while we do it!

Style Group is another fantastic company who lended their many talents to archiving the event, and here is a little taste of what the night was all about! Kudos to Alex Coombs for putting it altogether!

This year The Eye of Faith presented +GODDESS+ , a collection of one of a kind garments inspired by the kick ass-ness of 80s and 90s supermodels. It was a collection of pure glamour, and we are so pleased with the outcome.

We can’t wait to share our designs with you, so stay tuned!

The Eye of Faith is back for Supercrawl 2016!

output_dmqPyB

That’s right friends and followers!

We are so psyched to be back presenting for Supercrawl 2016 alongside the city’s best designers of original clothing. Last year not only did we have our runway show, but we also presented a two hour Vintage Showcase the following day, so this year we are so thrilled to only have our runway show to master.

This year, our collection was inspired by TAROT, and we can’t spill too much, but we are definitely sure that we have more than a few show stoppers to give all you fashion lovers the most bang for your buck.

We are also pumped to showcase some original menswear in the collection this year, as well as some conceptual looks that incorporate unconventional materials. Being proponents of vintage clothing, we also thought it would be interesting to use primarily vintage fabrics to create our looks!

This year, the fashion tents are situated at James St. N and Murray.

Our show begins

 Saturday, September 10 @ 3: 45 SHARP.

Fashion, Art, and Music – the most powerful trifecta – all in one slamming event taking over downtown Hamilton: SUPERCRAWL!!!

Don’t miss out! Grab a seat and enjoy the show!!!

Until we meet again,

{STYLE WISE} LAUREN BACALL PRESENTS 1987 COSTUME DESIGN OSCAR

With the 88th Annual Academy Awards just around the corner, we can’t help but indulge in some Oscar nostalgia in this key periods of waiting…

One fantastic find is this clip from Oscar.com of the costume design portion of the 1987 ceremony which celebrated the best films of 1986; a fantastic year which include Roland Joffe’s “The Mission”, Woody Allen’s “Hannah and her Sisters”, Oliver Stone’s “Platoon”, and of course, my boy David Lynch’s iconic modern masterwork “Blue Velvet”*.

*one nomination for David Lynch in the category of Best Director (should have been many more).

Presenting the award is none other than style divinity Lauren Bacall in all her sultry, sophisticated glory….MAN! THEY DON’T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO!

What began as the most innocent unassuming presentation turned into full-on 80s fashion MADNESS!!!

Basically, the jist was that the costumes of films have always and will always directly influence fashion so with the help of legendary costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge ( 1974’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ ) who used the year’s nominees (“The Mission”, “Otello”, “Peggy Sue Got Married”, “Pirates”, and that year’s winner “A Room With a View”) as inspiration for contemporary fashions a la 1987 through the eyes of one magnificently creative and visionary mind.

They just couldn’t help themselves, and be prepared to be dazzled by some super enthusiastic dancers and some really exciting fashion that probably never actually made it to the streets, but at least opens the eye to the possibilities of inspiration.

In a not very surprising instance of history repeating itself, Jenny Beaven, the winner of the Oscar that year for James Ivory’s stunning, classic film “A Room With a View” (starring young and fresh faces Helena Bonham Carter and Denholm Elliot), is nominated again this year for George Miller’s visionary epic “Mad Max: Fury Road” and is primed to taking home the Golden Boy once again!

What is so fantastic about Jenny Beaven’s contribution to “Mad Max: Fury Road”, personally, is that it is such a different kind of project than her past films which have garnered nominations such as “Gosford Park“, “The King’s Speech“, and “Howards End“, which makes it so cool to see her creating such raw and original and truly contemporary visions for this latest masterwork, and getting much deserved recognition for it.

If you haven’t seen “Mad Max: Fury Road” do so. It is a magnificently conjured film by true veterans of the craft. To be honest, I had my doubts about it, as I am getting so tired of these Hollywood remakes, but with the original director at the helm it truly is a treat to see what could be done with a story like Mad Max if given the treatment it deserves.

And if you wonder how possibly could we see the tattered and extreme costumes of “Fury Road” translate to today’s fashion scene. Look no further than say Kanye West’s label “Yeezy” and his latest collection SEASON 3 . . .apparently dystopia is tres chic these days, and that’s just a single example.  Go figure!

We hope to delve a bit more into the Costume Design category in the coming week, so stay tuned!

And don’t forget to watch on the big night (Feb. 28) to see history in the making!

How rich it is to find the threads of our {past}, {present}, and {future}

entangling us so  . . .

Until next time,

+STYLE STAR+ ANDRE JUDD: PROPHET OF FASHION

If you’re a fan of Lookbook, or have ever had the chance to browse the online showcase of individual styles gathered to help foster the “collective fashion consciousness” that Lookbook is all about. While glancing past looks by a self proclaimed Mermaid from Neverland you are bound to stumble across this true one-of-a-kind Prophet of Fashion.

Just when you thought style couldn’t get more exciting or gloriously out-of-control you will meet Andre Judd. Andre treads the lines of dreaming and reality with a panache and attention to detail rivalling some of fashion’s greats. Time and time again, Andre has proved that the art of dressing is as much an art as any.

This type of talent is rare, and very few can achieve his bold unique punch of imagination, virtual reality, and pure abandon.  So, naturally we felt the need to connect with the Stylist, Designer, and Fashion Blogger Extraordinaire who answered a few of our questions on life, style, inspiration, and the unique fashion-forward fashion scene of Manila!

Most of all, we felt Andre was the perfect example of what we here at The Eye of Faith are always harping on about and that’s the courage to find inspiration and be your truest self to the highest extent.

“We see something new. Something exciting”

-Andre Judd.

EOF: There seems to be a lot of excitement and intrigue in the world of fashion in the Philippines. What would surprise or excite people most about the Filipino fashion scene?

AJ: Indeed. Every season we see new bright young talents emerge. These designers score high on the critics and fashion press because they have a refined focus on aesthetics as well being commercial.

I think what excites Filipinos about the fashion scene, is that every season it gets better and better. We see something new, something exciting.

EOF: Where would you say the epicentre of Filipino fashion is right now in the Philippines? Any favourite go-to spots?

AJ: Manila is considered the current fashion epicenter, drawing in designers from different parts of the country, as well as Filipino designers based abroad. There are a lot of cool retail shops and boutiques to check out in Manila. Top of my mind is Greenbelt 5, where a few concentrated stores are found selling current collections from my favourite local designers.

EOF: We love how many looks you create, and your undeniable knowledge for style. Who taught you these secrets? God, or deal with the Devil?

AJ: God. Definitely 🙂

EOF: What has been your most important lesson in life when it comes to your own personal brand of style?

AJ: Never say never. It’s my mantra ever since.

EOF: Creating so many complex and detailed looks must be quite the task. What is your secret to staying focused?

AJ: It’s not really hard. I wake up every morning with a strong idea on what I would wear.

EOF: You mix a lot of items one might typically prescribe as masculine or feminine, and it seems once they get the Andre Judd touch, it’s neither. Instead, it’s a whole new brand of cool. What do you call this?
AJ: Some call it non-conventional, others call it androgynous, but I call it post-modern and irreverent 🙂

“Fashion is about change”

-Andre Judd.

EOF: Interesting shapes, textures, and patterns are essential ingredients to your fashion magic. Do you have any tips on incorporating these ideas into one’s everyday style?
AJ: Try playing with shapes, textures, and patterns. For the novice, one can start with just one different detail. Like if you love black, why not play with colour – lets say fuchsia, and combine it with black. If you like wearing block colors, why not try a printed top? It’s the idea of adapting to new things. After all, fashion is about change. You don’t need to sacrifice your style, you just simply like it to evolve 🙂

EOF: You’ve accidentally conjured up an angry spirit who won’t get the hell out of your closet. You want to call the cops, but you know they won’t believe you so you pull out your exorcism kit and go to work. What is the one thing you are hoping to save from your wardrobe?
AJ: Oh my, toughest question ever. I’d pick my accessories box. You can do wonders to your look just by adding a necklace or a brooch.

EOF: What is your favourite vintage find, and why do you think your devils approve?

AJ: Its my Gianni Versace bomber jacket from the 80s.  You wouldn’t believe how super cheap I got it. Its my number one treasured find because its real leather, it has chain mail, looks very contemporary,  the color of the leather goes with anything, and it gives an instant edge to any look.

EOF: We have received a lot of botched up advice on fashion in our lives, but we have always stayed pure to what is inside. What is the worst fashion advice you’ve ever been given?

AJ: Men shouldn’t wear women’s clothing.

EOF: For us, fashion is definitely an escape, and the style or look we wear is the story being told. You are an expert in storytelling, with a seemingly eternal well of inspiration. With almost 400 looks on LOOKBOOK, dark we ask – do you have a favourite?

AJ: Every new look I post is my favourite.

EOF: Here at The Eye of Faith, we like to think of ourselves as soldiers marching for a better tomorrow. Are there any causes or struggles in your life that you are fighting for?

AJ: I am a huge advocate of Filipino fashion so as much as I can I like to wear Filipino designers in my looks. That way I can help promote their names in the international scene via LOOKBOOK.

EOF: What sort of things can the readers of The Eye of Faith expect from Andre Judd in the future?

AJ: Expect the unexpected 🙂

“STOKER” – The Life and Styles of the Rich and Sophisticated . . .

STK-3223.NEF

“Stoker” is one of those films that only come out once in a blue moon; when we’ve all done our chores, and said our blessings to the universe – then we get a film like “Stoker”.

Complex, beautiful, provocative, wonderfully acted, great dialogue, and stylistically beyond are some words you could use to describe it, but its more the indescribable feelings you are left with after leaving the picture, that truly speak to its prestige in the grand scheme of world cinema.

The term world cinema couldn’t be more appropriate in this case, as Korean Director Park (Chang-Wook of “Oldboy” fame) has choreographed this exquisitely sinister plot in a language foreign to most of the cast and crew. Even while working with the film’s biggest stars, a translator was used to communicate between actor and director. And while this is his first English language film, it will definitely not be his last. As any film buff knows, the language of film is universal, and from the film’s opening shots the director’s eye for detail and acute sensibility sing a song harking back to film makers of a time long gone like Bergman, Hitchcock, and Kubrick.

India Stoker- Classic Vintage Inspired Look by Kurt and Bart

Many things spoke to us throughout the film, from Clint Mansell‘s (“Black Swan”) haunting score, the incredibly articulated and imaginative Production Design of Therese De Prez (another “Black Swan” veteran), Wentworth Miller (“Prison Break”) and Erin Wilson’s sophisticated script, as well as the acting chops of Matthew Goode ( playing against type as the mysterious Uncle with a dark past), Nicole Kidman (the lonely and vindictive mother), and most especially Mia Wasikowska, as India Stoker, the film’s protagonist.

This young starlet is always good in everything she is in, but almost expertly does she manage to tackle this role which requires her to be many things, most of the time without many words, making for a most appreciated and most memorable character in the past decade.

Surrounded by Saddle Shoes- India Stoker Style Stunner

But what stood out in particular for us here at The Eye of Faith, had to be the incredible costume design by designer duo Kurt & Bart, who put together the looks to fully realize these strange personalities.

Indeed, they are very rich and very sophisticated, and from the moment India walks onto the screen in her crocodile skinned LaBoutins, flowy skirt and floral silken blouse – you just knew you were in for a style treat with this one.

STK-5409.NEF

In fact, throughout the film, the costumes play a great deal in helping enrich the story being told throughout. The designers point out a green Marni cardigan, worn during the film’s strange piano duet, noting how the colour of the cardigan matches the colours of the walls in her own house, symbolizing India’s captivity.

Also signature to the film’s main theme is a pair of shoes – saddle shoes, to be exact, which represent the more child-like and homely version of India, before she foregoes her inevitable transformation into womanhood.

India Stoker - Vintage Fashion Inspiration- Style Idol of Tomorrow

STK-5861.NEF

India Stoker- The preraphaelite muse- nouveau gothic- style stunner inspiration- vintage fashion reinvention

While the film displays a nod to the 1950s with the styling of India, the duo point out that no vintage was harmed in the making of this film.

Instead, they studied day dressed and blouses from the era and used them as inspiration in the creation of India’s wardrobe, adding extra details, and unique clasps and fastenings that would indicate India’s obsessively detailed nature, as well as her rejection of the everyday – that’s my girl!

She is not of this world, but of her own, and throughout the film we are by her side in  her own elevated sense of reality.

The Spider Crawls Up Indias Saddle Shoes

I’m gonna bet there’s already been a rise in saddle shoe sales, and I’m hoping to see more girls unafraid to rock a pretty blouse and skirt combination. After all, its all in the attitude – the India Attitude.

She’s definitely a new idol of sorts; Nouveau-Gothic, in a way, with her pastel coloured blouses, and prim and proper way of dress, but grossly morose in her attitude and presentation to the world around her.

She is a representation of that breaking point from teen to adult, and that indefinite feeling of not belonging to the world that surrounds you, and doing everything you can to not fit into it. She’s a strange poster child for our generation, in that way.

There’s no doubting the staying power of this film, and in 25 years from now, we will still be looking back on this one as a great one on the level of psychological horrors like “The Shining” and “Rosemary’s Baby”. Even compared to those great classics, there is something very different here with “Stoker” that cannot be compared. Perhaps it is the contemporary nature of the story, and it taking place today that is very different.

These days American films don’t often delve into the lives of the rich and sophisticated to come out with a vision so twisted and maniacal, so perhaps it is the appropriateness of this action that really helps speak to the “nowness” of it all. There is no denying the conspiracies and secrets of the world’s most affluent families, and as history as shown us, they often hide the most terrible and terrifying secrets . . .

Finding The Letters She Never Received

“Stoker” is a glimpse on what might just be the truth behind the family with the mansion, the housekeeper, the beautifully kept lawn, the designer furniture, valuable antiques, most incredible designer clothing, and carved stone art just laying about in the garden. After all, you never know . . .

From the very beginning it will really keep you guessing, but be warned – its not for the faint of heart. This is a thriller, and while director Park describes his film as a modern fairy tale, don’t be expecting ponies and rainbows from this one. There is a glass slipper at the end of it all – though be them black crocodile LaBoutins at the end of it all, which maybe a few hours afterwards will really strike you as a funny “Happy Ever After” to this very modern Fairy Tale; a fairy tale that, unlike most,  challenges its audiences, and asks you to question the characters motives and uncover their vices to help us question ourselves and our own everyday anxieties.

So if there’s one thing you get up to this week its getting your butt out the door to see this film!

Stoker- Opening Shots

This is me. Just as a flower does not choose its colour, we are not responsible for what we come to be. Only once you realize this do you become free. And to become adult, is to become free.

-India, “Stoker” {2013}.
