{January 22} Isn’t It Byronic? Happy Birthday LORD BYRON [ Currently Conjuring this ODD FELLOW ]

“Death, so called, is a thing which makes men weep, And yet a third of life is passed in sleep.”

-Lord Byron: George Gordon Byron {6th Baron Byron}

ON THIS DAY, SOME MIGHT SAY. . .

A GENIUS

was born.

Others may just call him a MAD MAN.

Byronic [ bahy-ron-ik ]

adjective
  • of or relating to Lord Byron.
  • possessing the characteristics of Byron or his poetry, especially romanticism, melancholy, and melodramatic energy.

Regarded as one of the most important English poets, as well as a leader of the Romantic Movement of the early 19th Century. . . he was a revolutionary in the Greek War of Independence, a politician, as well as a major celebrity of the time!

Indeed, before Beatlemania – there was “BYRONMANIA”, as described by his own wife Annabella. Self-aware to the max, and huge proponent of personal promotion- his celebrity was equivalent to that of a modern day rock star of the time.

As an Aquarius, it is no surprise that he was extremely odd and eccentric about certain things. He had a fascination for the macabre and stories tell of him having a coffin at the dining table of his family’s Gothic manor, as well as collecting the skulls of animals which he proudly displayed in an enormous shooting gallery. He also loved to drink out of a monkey skull turned into an elaborate chalice…so they say.

His antics were legendary, however, as much as he enjoyed the spotlight, he retired to a self imposed exile from Britain later in his life. . . how Byronic.

He knew himself a villain—but he deem’d
The rest no better than the thing he seem’d;
And scorn’d the best as hypocrites who hid
Those deeds the bolder spirit plainly did.
He knew himself detested, but he knew
The hearts that loath’d him, crouch’d and dreaded too.
Lone, wild, and strange, he stood alike exempt
From all affection and from all contempt:

“The Corsair” (1814) by Lord Byron

Incredible to know these robes are all over 150 years old, and as beautifu and stylish as ever! Time traveled and dripping with the luxury of mystery . . .  any of these robes are as home with Lord Byron in his gothic estate to modern day hype boys on the subways of New York City.

Check out for instance rapper FUTURE below wearing this incredibly opulent embroidered velvet robe with Vetements X Doc Martens shoes . . . time is relative – style is eternal.

We hope you feel inspired.

{INTERESTING FACT}

One of the most outrageous things the notorious playboy did in his life, you will get a kick out of!
Back in the 1800s, it was quite customary for lovers to keep mementos of their love of letters, drawings, even a lock of hair – however, Byron took this to the extreme and kept clippings of each lovers pubic hairs and kept them in labeled envelopes in his library for safe keeping…

Now that’s Byronic!

{MUSIC MINUTE} “GIGI IN PARADISCO” by +DALIDA+

Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti ( 17 January 1933 – 3 May 1987) better known as Dalida (داليدا‎)

+Before Beyonce there was Dalida.+

This exotic beauty of Italian descent and born in Cairo, Egypt rose to international fame throughout the 1960s and all the way to her suicide in the 1980s. A suicide over a broken heart only days after appearing in television interviews perfectly normal…love was her worst enemy in life.

She sold upwards of 140 million albums; Beyonce has sold 17 million solo, and 17 million with Destiny’s Child which really puts it into perspective (although, our girl Rihanna has sold upwards of 230 million records, so . . . ).

Special thanks to +THE ULTIMATE FASHION HISTORY+ Channel and its fabulous curator Amanda Halley for introducing us to this dazzling Diva. I’m sure we will focus on her again in future posts! The more you dive into her memory, the  more incredible she becomes.

There was actually a biopic released in 2017 about her which we are dying to see! Check out the trailer here.

This is a wonderful disco extravaganza from 1979-1980 (?) entitled “GIGI IN PARADISCO”. It’s a total odyssey of 1970s crazy euro party glamour!

{STYLE IDOL} HELMUT BERGER (Doesn’t Give a Fuck!!!)

Helmut Berger is what I consider a perfect artist – very serious in his craft, intelligent in his thoughts, without any time or patience for “bullshit” or empty phrases that litter many people’s everyday lives, conversations and relationships.

Alexander Tuschinski, article about working with Berger on the film Timeless in 2015.

Helmut Berger doesn’t give a fuck what you think about him.

A icon of beauty, sex, and hedonism – the actor experienced great attention through the late 60s and 1970s for his work in film, most particularly with iconic Italian film maker Luchino Visconti whom took Berger under his wing as a muse in art and love.

How couldn’t he? When Visconti first cast the young and rebellious Austrian actor in his film Le Streghe (The Witches) in 1967, it was clear this was a rare star coming closer into orbit, and soon he was doing one iconic role after another playing Martin Von Essenback in The Damned (dressing in Dietrich drag in one of the film’s pivotal moments), King Ludwig II of Bavaria (earning him a David Di Donatello Award for Best Actor), and the title role in the flashy mod remake of Oscar Wilde’s classic – Dorian Gray.

He was also the first man to ever grace the cover of VOGUE alongside girlfriend Marisa Berenson – not surprising considering his classic beauty.

Those smouldering eyes, that golden blonde hair, his brooding masculinity mixed with a distinct dandy elegance – its a combination we don’t see in celebrities today.

On screen and off screen, Helmut Berger is definitely an idol of style we need to praise! So, here’s a classic {STYLE IDOL} collection of wicked photos of this bad ass legend of cinema to muse over and inspire your personal sense of style!

Yes, I am tainted by the beautiful things in life. But to all those who only want to see me as an agent provocateur and an eccentric I can only say: With every day of my life the number of people I don’t give a damn about grows and grows.

-Helmut Berger

As portrayed in the intensely provocative documentary by Andreas Horvath, Helmut Berger is a rebel without a cause – full of spunk, a lust for life, and a certain je na sais quois that really make a star ignite.

Not many people have the balls to to live as loud as this guy, so major props to him for that; and despite his seemingly reckless antics, we can’t deny the beautiful tapestry of work this man has created with his art and contributions to the legacy of cinema and of course, classic bad ass style!

For the most part, off duty, he’s a very classic jeans and oxford shirt kind of guy, but I love the extravagance and opulence he is able to pull of in many of his film roles, that I believe many other actors would have had a hard time making believable.

Tres chic and a bit of a rebel- Helmut Berger should definitely be at the top of your list for all-time style icons if you are into that kind of thing. We started this blog to help promote the beauty of the {past}, so hopefully we’ll be seeing a little more Helmut Berger realness in the near {future}.

What frightens you, what you see or what you don’t?

{MUSIC MINUTE} LANA DEL REY’s “LOVE”: Is there life on Mars???

lana-del-rey-love-is-there-life-on-mars-the-eye-of-faith-vintage-inspiration-blog-shop-6

“It’s like she’s the only one that gets me”

                              {the internet}

We are proud to admit that we are absolutely obsessed with Lana Del Rey (along with the rest of the internet) – her melancholic croons and her unapologetic approach to bringing the {past} to the {present}, truly mirrors our own approach at The Eye of Faith to try and shape our {future}.

lana-del-rey-love-is-there-life-on-mars-the-eye-of-faith-vintage-inspiration-blog-shop-3

So, of course, we have been buzzing over her latest video drop just the other day for her new single “LOVE”. How apropos…

In true Lana style, her team takes us on a sweeping visual journey from grainy 1960s black and white realness to a dreamy extraterrestrial getaway for a pack of beautiful wayward youth. It’s like a picture from a dream; and no artist can really capture that mysteriously nostalgic vibe of needing to “escape our everyday” – I mean, who doesn’t want to escape to another planet with their best friends?

Truly breathtaking moments that conjure up feels from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and Lars Von Trier’s “Melancholia“. From floating trucks and many moons, to the spot on psych rock styling – this video is truly one of her greatest, and is not to be missed.

Vintage inspired posters of Lana Del Rey have been spotted plastered across the streets of Los Angeles, and elsewhere in California, so expect a big resurgence of the 21st Century’s truly unique Pop Diva this coming year!

Knowing how you feel about the things we love, we truly thought you’d appreciate “LOVE” by Lana Del Rey. Marvel at how so many inspirations truly have come to play to make this video come to life. That is what is so great, and important about staying {style-wise} – creatively, it can allow you to create a much richer and deeper experience which is exactly why we began The Eye of Faith in the first place!

So do enjoy the video below, and leave your comments when you are done, and stay tuned for more to come!

My Soul.
I summon to the winding ancient stair;
Set all your mind upon the steep ascent,
Upon the broken, crumbling battlement,
Upon the breathless starlit air,
“Upon the star that marks the hidden pole;
Fix every wandering thought upon
That quarter where all thought is done:
Who can distinguish darkness from the soul

-William Butler Yeats, excerpt from “A Dialogue of Self and Soul”

XIXIXI GETS YOU 25% OFF IN THE {SHOP}

Into the Age of Aquarius, the Spirit of a Generation

That’s Verushka above holding the crystal ball. The premium European Sex Pot 1960s Supermodel Extraordinaire will always be remembered for her natural inclinations toward the artistic and extreme. This photo being a prime example of her unnatural talents, but it wouldn’t be without the stand alone talent of Don Snyder [1934-2010] and his remarkable publication “Aquarian Odyssey: A Photographic Trip into the Sixties”.

Since we’ve been especially psychedelic lately with our recent posts, it was important for us to go one step further and discover the psychedelic moods in the art and fashion of the day. There really was no better artist to turn to than Don Snyder, whose work is a cosmic collection of photographs taken throughout New York City in the 60s, as well as communes in New England and San Francisco.

The photographs he captured are both timeless and magical, and offer a beautiful glimpse into a not so far away world. His combination of stark reality with the whimsy of his surroundings create for priceless and spectacular moments caught in time. It’s all in the subtlety of each shot; the magic he has captured, proof there must truly be a God, or perhaps that Don Snyder is one.

Either way, let us not forget Don Snyder and his wicked gifts he has left for this generation to covet. Don passed in 2010 alone without a will, leaving an apartment full of prints and negatives the world might never get the privilege to see! He was known as a gifted photographer, and an even better teacher – “the alchemist of the darkroom”.

His friends and colleagues remember him for both the ingenuity and artistry of the man, but also his kind and dynamic spirit. While some might say the Psychedelic Art movement died with the times, young artists are emerging with some of the same sensibilities we see in Snyder’s work. Photographers like Petra Collins, Elliot Lee Hazel, and Ryan McGinley can all be seen as forgers of the same odyssey.

Sixties psychedelia has always “turned me on”, and while 2012 and the future seems to be striving for some sort of impossible sleekness. There is an unbearable inclination towards  cutting-edge in technology, and perhaps we have forgotten the strides the “Age of Aquarius” took for us.

The influential people of this moment were not celebrities seeking hits on a web page. The influential people of this generation were making dramatic steps to shaping the future. Causes of consideration included  civil rights, women’s rights, gay and lesbian rights, the liberation from the repression of sexuality, as well as the controversial use of drugs or “herbs” such as marijuana or LSD, all these things have been brought to the forefront of popular culture thanks to millions of brave “Aquarians” everywhere.

Now that all these steps have been made, it is up to younger generations not to let these messages fall to the wayside.  We must keep on keeping on, or have our freedoms slowly and unwittingly fall to our wayside. Yes, steps have been made, but where are we going? This is the question Don Snyder asks. And his “Aquarian Odyssey” represents a moment of hope amidst great uncertainty for the future. Sounds familiar, right?

Don Snyder’s “Aquarian Odyssey: A Photographic Trip into the Sixties” is a rare book to come by these day, but there is no denying the spell kept within. Browsing Barnes and Noble, a few copies can be found in near perfect condition, and with the recent death of the artist, and the rising interest in this niche of popular culture and history, it wouldn’t be unwise to pick one up today! A sure-fire great addition to any well-rounded style library!

Don’t forget!  When the moon is in the seventh house, The Eye of Faith will always be there! Snyder was a smart man for leaving his legacy behind with this one publication. Perhaps with these photos we can seek to find an answer to some of life’s great mysteries. Hope we helped you get there. Wherever that may be.

Sincerely,

{[The Eye]}

JIM MORRISON - you are not my enemy

For the last while we’ve been a little obsessed, or encouraged, by Jim Morrison’s ghost. You cannot deny this guy has style. Ever since the teenage years (weird to say), there’s been a fascination with this bit of a God.

An idol in all respects…I had one of my very first writing gigs doing a style summary of the legend for the website, Everyguyed, which still operates today as an online source for men’s style and tips for your everyday when you’re a guy. I remember the vivid rush whilst composing the words to describe this very 70s tainted, easy-breezy, laid back, effortless, easy cool.

Some might point fingers at the snake skin and leather (‘Lizard King’, after all), but I think it was in his soul. It was a cool, dark, anointed spirit that still contemplates to this day.

As fate would have it, I also wrote a piece regarding men’s vintage clothing staples and tips for finding and incorporating these pieces into your style. So, if you want a piece of my {past}, do check it out!
