A GIFT FROM THE GODS

PLEASE ENJOY WHILE YOU CAN

Who knows how long it will be available for your viewing pleasure . . .

Absolutely amazing footage of The Young Vic’s masterful production of Tennesse William’s American masterpiece “A Streetcar Named Desire”, starring Ben Foster as Stanley Kowalski and the Queen herself, Gillian Anderson, as Blanche Dubois.

ICONIC, MUCH?

The production brings this timeless story of vanity, lust, shame, misconception, and denial to a very vivid place that truly makes the audience feel like they themselves are somehow teetering a fine line between fantasy and reality.

I’ve always depended on the kindness of the internet . . .

Until we meet again,

Commercial Break: Suspiria! (1977)

We had been anticipating watching this one for some time, and finally this past weekend we indulged in a masterpiece called Suspiria! Starring a young Jessica Harper who’s starred in The Phantom of the Paradise and Rocky Horror Picture Show II, and keeps us entertained to this very day as the Crabby Cook.

This is tale of an elite european ballet School where collecting on debt is a ‘charming habit’ of the students(insert the very sexy and very shadey Barbara Magnolfi), and the teacher’s and staff know more about the historic ballet school then they’d ever to let on.

From the Blind Pianist, to a creepy little blonde boy, this flick has got it all, including a killer soundtrack!

Drawn in by the Euro-Horror King, Dario Argento’s name alone, we knew we’d be in for some fun gore, sexy girls, and supernatural spooks, but were clueless to where the story may lead us other than reading a brief synopsis before hand. To our delight, every scene was as beautiful as the last!

With a set as beautiful as any work of art, adorned in blue and red velvet wallpaper, labyrinths of stripes,  a wide assortment of stained glass windows, shiny black lackerred wood panels and door’s, mile high ceilings, and an opulent Serpent staircase we’d love to climb.

We are introduced to the school through the eyes of a wide -eyed newcomer , played by Jessica Harper, who quickly grows suspicious of the happenings within the domineering school.

Upon her arrival, she witness a leggy buck-toothed blond fleeing from the school in a rainstorm, and learns the next morning of the school escapees dreadful fate (emphasis on the wide assortment of stained glass…).

Odd events lead to odder. Must be more than Voodoo? With everyday shrouded in mysteries, it isn’t until our heroin shares her suspicions with her classmate, played by lovely Stefani Casini, that the puzzle truly  begins to come together.  Leading Harper to a Psychiatric Convention and conversations of Witches and Covens.  Speculation leads to proof when it’s realized the Ballet school was founded by a great and powerful Witch who was said to be killed in a fire at the turn of the century.

If you’re a fan of Black Swan or Rocky Horror Picture Show, this one’s for you!

This is no chick flick by any means despite the gaggle of gals in ballet shoes.  Scene after scene, Dario Argento will keep you shocked and in suspense as this tale unravels.  Enjoy the Eyeful of opulence but be prepared for some gross yet charming gut-turning death’s.

Heed our words…This is a great film!!

The Secret of the Vibrant Green Vintage Nat Nast Bowling Shirt . . .

Knights of the Sandcastle- Ray Jewelers 1950s Nat Nast Bowling Shirt

A rather fantastic thing happened the other day.

It seems that one of our recent sales, a vibrant turquoise 1950’s Nat Nast bowling shirt that featured a fantastic diamond embossed on the back ( ‘Ray Jewlers’ it proudly proclaims in the most elegant lettering), was embedded with some very strange history. . .

Embossed Diamond Detail

It always seemed to possess a mysterious energy, and was for so long, a most precious piece of our collection. Excited to have found a home for this exquisite find, we would never have expected to learn what would soon be revealed and unraveled.

Upon undergoing some alterations to properly suit its new owner, some peculiar mysteries emerged. Embedded within the collar stays was a very old social security card for “Charles Beckweth, Born 1929” that was halved and in a fragile state.

Looking into a bit more about the mystery man uncovered an important man in history. . .

Charles_Beckwith

Charles Beckwith, or “Chargin’ Charlie’”was a Korea & Vietnam Vet and Colonel with the United States Army and is accredited with creating “DELTA FORCE”.

Delta Sigma Chi - University of Georgia

Footballer and frat boy, this Delta (of the Sigma Chi Fraternity of The University of Georgia) rose the ranks of the United States military system, and was also able to have some fun in-between, by the looks of this incredible shirt.

But why was his social security card cut in half and used as collar stays? Was getting dressed to impress a smart way to go undercover? Dapper “Dean” makes a statement to not make a statement. If you’re found dead, then they have something to properly identify you by when looking in the collar? This is the secret of the Nat Nast shirt.

That “vibrant green bowling shirt” was already unforgettable, but this truly shows how remarkable the history behind vintage pieces can be. It’s a powerful force really, and the mystery of it all is undoubtedly part of the fun.

We might never know the full truth of the Nat Nast shirt and its secret history, but we will enjoy knowing that this shirt truly was something special.

Music Minute: “Goodbye to Love” – The Carpenters (1972)

Richard Carpenter and Karen Carpenter

Composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis,  and fiirst released in 1972 on the “Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters” documentary; the song was ispired by a visit to London, where Richard saw an old Bing Crosby 1940 film called Rhythm on the River, where he noticed that they kept referring to the struggling songwriter’s greatest composition, “Goodbye to Love”.

He says `You never hear it in the movie, they just keep referring to it,’ and he immediately envisioned the tune, and lyrics starting with:

I’ll say goodbye to love
No one ever cared if I should live or die.
Time and time again the chance for
Love has passed me by…

He said that while the melody in his head kept going, the lyrics stopped “because I’m not a lyricist“, and he completed the rest of his arrangement upon his return to the US.

Karen Carpenter called guitarist Tony Peluso  herself to get him to play on the track.  Tony remembers: “At first I didn’t believe that it was actually Karen Carpenter on the phone but she repeated her name again. … It was at this point that I realized it was really her and that I was speaking to one of my idols.” She told him that she and Richard were working on a song called “Goodbye To Love” and they were both familiar with his work with another band (called Instant Joy), and that he’d be perfect for the sound they were looking for.

Peluso first played something soft and sweet, but then Richard Carpenter said

No, no, no! Play the melody for five bars and then burn it up! Soar off into the stratosphere! Go ahead! It’ll be great!

Peluso insists this was one of the first, if not THE first, love ballads to have a fuzz guitar solo.

Funny enough, The Carpenters did receive hate mail; claiming that The Carpenters had sold out and gone hard-rock because of Richard’s idea for a fuzz guitar solo in a love ballad!  And even some Adult Contemporary oriented radio stations refused to play the song because of it.

Regardless of the controversy, many Carpenters fans today still admire the song for its unique power.

Sincerely,

BURGER GIRL WANTS YOU…

If you have never heard of Benjamin Dukhan then please let me introduce you to one of fashion’s most intelligible of beings. His face has helped redefine the image of the male model, whom had always been young, spry, and smooth. While he is both young and spry, it is his scruffy hairiness that has helped make a mark for the man on the mainstream.

With a beard like Zeus, Benjamin has become a one-of-a-kind life force in the industry, walking for some of the biggest names out there, and bringing a manly elegance to each new look he dons. He has also shown up on The Eye of Faith in the past in our story entitled “My Demon Brother” walking one of his best looks in the Jean Paul Gaultier FW 2011 collection.

As well as his continuing stint as one of fashion’s staple faces on the catwalk, Benjamin Dukhan’s exciting multi-disciplinary background has taken him, and the industry, to new and unseen heights.

Beginning his career as a dancer, Benjamin has been able to fuse his love for movement with his unlikely chameleon nature in a continuing performance art piece called BURGER GIRL. As much an art piece as some sort of alter-ego or secret persona, the videos Dukhan and his collaborators have produced give rise to thousands of new notions of what it means to perform in front of a camera.

Not only is Benjamin pushing the bounds of what it means to be a “super model”, but he is also pushing the bounds of dance, art, video, music, and fashion to a world where each can see each other off and amalgamate into a singular dynamic art form.

So where do you come in?

Benjamin needs the help of as many people as he can to fund his latest BURGER GIRL project. Donated funds will go towards the production of his 10th and final video, “Vogue Positive” which will be featured on the official site, as well as on Youtube, and will most likely tour the European underground scene.

There are only four days left to make a contribution, so please check it out.

+You can make your donation here. +

Also make sure to check out his site to watch more original BURGER GIRL videos.

Benjamin is graciously awarding contributors with gifts according to the size of the donation, so best to give generously. It’s not everyday that a high fashion supermodel needs your help, so let’s pull ourselves together and do what we can for the sake of fashion, the sake of art, and getting these worlds closer and closer together!

Sincerely,

{theEye}
