STYLE {WISE} – Suddenly Seeking Sweater Girls

Lovely ladies, it seems we’ve been thinking of you a lot lately. It’s not by accident, for we have been meditating on many thoughts as of late about our many loves and desires when it comes to female fashions. In true E.O.F. Style we stepped back to the past for a little taste of times past to infiltrate our vintage vision for the future. When it comes to sweaters, it’s not hard to see how having a great one is top of the pops for most style driven Sams and Sallys. If it’s not one, it better be a hundred. There aren’t many sweater that go out of style, either. They are simply one of those timeless treasures that titillate… Indeed, there was a time when we imagined only the good girl donning a prim and proper sweater, but don’t be fooled. Many a femme fatale and vixen have adorned their bodies with an armor of angora to dumb found the senses. We looked back  the distant and recent past to pull some of the best images we could find that helped seduce and inspire.  Listen close, and you might hear the sweet, sweet, song of the Sweater Girls….

Slavery in the WhiteHouse!? Ci.

We have always been on the Michelle Obama bandwagon,  and we’re not even American! We don’t care where she’s taking us, but as the American Presidential Elections draw near, it’s the latest controversy which has us nostalgic for the days of interest over her trim arms, and healthy food initiatives.

Appearing on the cover of the August 2012 issue of Spanish magazine, Fuera de Serie, is a nude portrait of American First Lady Michelle Obama.

Well to be clear, appearing on the cover of the August 2012 issue of Spanish magazine, Fuera de Serie,  is an image by Artist Karine Percheron-Daniels  with First Lady Michelle Obama’s face super imposed over a pre-exsisting Marie-Guillemine Benoist‘s painting “Portrait d’une négresse.”

Benoist painted the portrait in 1800 as a social commentary on France’s sexism and racism during the 19th century. Historians also view the piece of art as the beginning of the country’s feminist movement.

So perhaps the comparison is more fitting than not?  Albeit a number of sites have called the cover inappropriate because it depicts the First Lady in imagery closely associated with slavery.
It wasn’t too long ago that the Benoist painting was used as a reference for a shoe campaign by red-souled Christian Louboutin in 2011.  So we ask what’s more shocking? Using the image of a ‘slave’ to push politics, or sell shoes?

Also, this wouldn’t be the first piece by the artist to cause such a scandal by Karine Percheron-Daniels.  She has done previous portraits of Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn, Eva Peron, Albert Einstein, and even Barack Obama and Michael Jackson in the buff.  Somehow this latest nod to the first lady seem’s to of launched the artist into mainstream conversation.

After the controversial piece hit the net, the artist released a statement via their website to address any haters or misunderstanders, Saying;

“If any of you have found this piece of art insulting I would like to say that my GENUINE intention was never to chock or upset anyone.This has COMPLETELY got lost in translation. I created this picture as part of a series of other famous  nudes.  As an artist I only paint and create pictures of people I admire and feel passionate about. Michelle Obama is one of these people. In my eyes , the picture I created here is of a beautiful woman with a beautiful message : The first Lady of America  in the first time in history is a black woman who proudly and confidently displays her WOMANHOOD (the nude) her ROOTS (the slave)  and her POWER(the First Lady of America embraced by the American flag). This picture, is a celebration of EVERYTHING GOOD, it is a celebration af achievement and in my opinion is not a racist slur. I am not a racist: I admire people regardless of their colour and this picture was meant to be a tribute….totally lost in translation. With my art I try to show beauty  NOT DIRT.”




Here at the Eye of Faith, we can appreciate the historic references for all these images, but when it comes to this one of the First Lady… we are left wondering, what would Michelle Obama say?

{Style Wise} – Feathered Frenzy: Where Were You “Last Year at Marienbad” ?

Fresh off our post featuring an interview with Colleen Atwood and her immaculate creations for the new film “Snow White and the Huntsman“, {the Eye} began thinking of Charlize Theron’s haunting black raven feather “Transforming Cape” and how much it reminded me of Delphine Seyrig’s amazing feathered dress from the ambiguous and elusive 1961 French art house classic, “Last Year At Marienbad“.

Since it’s release in 1961, the film has captivated it’s viewers with it’s sleek black and white photography, decadent Hotel backdrop (Marienbad), and it’s mysterious plot, which involves a Man named “X” and a woman named “A” who may or may not have met the last year a Marienbad. It’s a wild ride through flashbacks, memories, dreams, faded thoughts, and blurred desires that remains the pinnacle of the New Novel movement.

Empty salons. Corridors. Salons. Doors. Doors. Salons. Empty chairs, deep armchairs, thick carpets. Heavy hangings. Stairs, steps. Steps, one after the other. Glass objects, objects still intact, empty glasses. A glass that falls, three, two, one, zero. Glass partition, letters.

Written by the renowned French author Alain Robbe-Grillet, and directed by Alain Resnais, the film hoped to break the bounds of narrative and conventional film style all together, and in exchange offer us, the audience, the chance to shape our own perception of the story being unfolded before us.

We may never get an answer from Resnais or Robbe-Grillet on what the film truly is or isn’t about, but it truly is a remarkable and powerful thing to have complete control over our own perception – don’t you think?

From a style perspective, it only takes one look at Delphine Seyrig‘s iconic black feathered cape to understand its staying power in our style consciousness.  Chic and elegant, it would take some serious rock ‘n’ roll attitude to pull this kind of look off today. This didn’t stop Karl Lagerfeld from using the film as the jump point for his collection last Spring/Summer 2011 for Chanel.

While the collection captured some of the signatures of Bernard Evein‘s enigmatic costume designs – feathers, sequins, sheer, black – there’s something masterful in the simplicity and cleanliness of the film’s sumptuous designs.

Here at {the Eye}, we’re going to sit back and let this mystery of a film continue to confuse and delight, as the demons of fashion plant the seeds of inspiration from sea to sea. What Resnais and Robbe-Grillet attempted was to reject accepted notions of time in telling a story- they step forward, backward, under, and sideways creating a timeless lingering legacy.

Inspiration is a strange thing going on and on, snowballing on through time non-stop. Between Charlize, Delphine, and Chanel it might be safe to say, if you’re feeling a little frenzied by feathers – you may just be on the right track!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so we know we must value the Planet we’re living on!  We must find more resources and think differently about how we’re utilizing our energy.  We rather look toward the stars for answers instead of draining  our one planet for every drop of oil it has.  Surely there is a better way, why haven’t we found it?  Or have we,  but our world leaders are too timid to take the drastic steps of change that are necessary?  Let’s see what happens AFTER 2012.

Fancy and Folly: Giving Me The Silent Treatment

When I first saw the trailers for “The Artist“, shortly after it’s premier at the Cannes Film Festival that would lead to Jean Dujardin’s Best Actor win at the prestigious art festival, I was not impressed. Silly folly, I thought. Reductive (Thanks, Madonna). Wasted Inspiration. How could this “NEW” silent film set in th 20s really make a splash? There was no way, in my mind, that the audiences of 2011 would really appreciate the novelty…but surprisingly, they did!

Don’t know what it is about this one (as I’m still stubbornly NOT seeing it) that really taps a chord with everyone these days, but one thing is certain we have a hit on our hands! Picking up seven wins at the British Academy Awards last night, the film is continuing it’s unbeatable winning streak all the way to the Oscars.

Granted, the recreation of the 1920s looks great (especially costumes by first-time Academy Award nominee Mark Bridges, who painstakingly recreated designs from the 20s), not to mention Du Jardin’s charisma and winning smile, but there seems to be something so defeatist about watching a silent film made in 2012.

Why do I need to see this? I have seen many silent films, some of which are the most impressive pieces of film making, or dare I say ART, I’ve ever seen: “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920), “Birth of a Nation”(1915) , “Intolerance”(1916), “The Gold Rush”(1925), “Metropolis”(1927), “Voyage to the Moon” (1902), and “Pandora’s Box” (1929) are all some of the most important films ever made, as well as full of some of the most visually arresting images of all time.

 

All these films were made before sound became an unstoppable force in making movies. Before this time, the power of image and word, and the novelty of the moving image was enough to begin a revolution that would become Hollywood. And don’t think that because these films were made without sound that they are PG fair, because most silent classics are full of adultery, scandal, ghosts, vampires, drugs, sex, violence, and witches- all the things we love at The Eye of Faith, minus the rock n’ roll!

Watching the films of that time are magical in itself, as it’s probablly the closest any of us could ever get to time travel in our lifetime. It’s fascinating getting lost in Louise Miller’s beautiful bow lips, or catching Valentino’s devilish gaze- these celluloid dreams are the closest thing we have to these faded idols of yesteryear and their long lonst lost time. Having been made on film, we are getting a literal imprint of a moment in time playing out before our eyes. Absolute magic!

Back in those days, they didn’t have any of the technology we have today to make movies- all you had was a team full of people and a whole lot of passion to try to tell your story. Even “The Artist” couldn’t escape from having the shoot the film first in Colour, to then digitally manipulate the film to the lauded black and white photogrpahy being praised today.

Back in the 1920s, there is no way they would have shot a film only to have to redo it completely somewhere else; if time meant money now, time really meant money in those days- but today in 2012, I’m afraid that time for these jewels only means edging closer and closer to obscurity.

Ultimately, it’s about love for movies in general. I cannot fault director Michel Hazanavicius’ vision, bringing his ode to Silent Era to the masses, and hopefully with it’s growing popularity the film can also bring some love to the real classics of the 1910s and 1920s. However, I can’t help but think “The Artist” may even further dampened our view of the true days of Hollywood Babylon. Reductive.

Many people, like myself, see all the promos for “The Artist” and can’t see past the gimmick of it all. (I mean, REALLY?!!) Hopefully this doesn’t taint the idea of watching a real classic- seeing as you can watch a “NEW” one. Or maybe I’m being much too cynical and everything is jolly! It’s great to see so much love for the past, in general though. Perhaps simply, the time of nostalgia has really struck.

Throughout the years, silent films have provided an endless source of inspiration. Luckily, many silent films are being restored and archived so future generations can enjoy the magic of the past. Watching a silent film, you can almost feel lucky, as if somehow you have found a hidden doorway to the past, and luckily you can stay there (at least for an hour or two).

Lest we forget from whence we came, and enjoy a piece of the puzzle today!

“Immigrant Song” – Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, & Karen O.

Feel the chill of winter’s song. Makes me want to scream!

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, last year’s Academy Award winners for David Fincher’s Facebook film “The Social Network” team up with the Oscar nominated director, and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s front woman Karen-O for a steamy and bizarre ride. Banding together for this year’s “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, the trinity rage through an atmospheric and moody cover of Led Zepellin’s “Immigrant Song”.

Definitely translates some of the bad-ass-ness we’re expecting from the American remake of the Swedish Blockbuster trilogy based on the International Best Selling books. Haven’t read or seen either, but can definitely dig the song! This is rock ‘n’ roll.

New York Times Magazine Gives Us A Touch of Evil.

Here at The Eye of Faith, we always have a taste for the sinister, the strange, and the macabre. Seems like some of this year’s most talented and intriguing stars feel the same penchant for the other side of good- EVIL. No need to get worried though, they’re doing it in the most wicked style!

New York Times Magazine always goes the extra mile, and the Touch of Evil collaboration betwen some of the year’s most endearing talents showcases their chops (as well as some amazing cinemtagraphy by Ross Richardson, and on-point direction from Alex Pager) in a glorious collection of wicked supreme! Drawing from the world of film, each actor provides a short journey into the complexities of the different guises they inhabit.

Rooney Mara goes straight for the kill as a Burgess-ingnited sociopath, awakened and on the prowl. Fantastic, as her every blink, and expression (or lack there-of) create the harmonious face of a true-born killer.

Can’t wait to see her in the upcoming ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, and if this is any insight into the young actress’ talent, her punk-rock Lisbeth should be equally as bold and even more gutsy! Ladies, and gentleman: a star is born.

Speaking of newly formed stars, last year’s newborn Alice of Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, Mia Wasikowska, is a stinger as the “Homewrecker”. After a subtle and effective turn in this year’s ‘Jane Eyre’ , where she played the shy, sad, modest Jane; it’s nice to see her as the sexy vampy femme fatale who knows what she wants, and how to get it.

Another favourite is newcomer Jessica Chastain. You have to love Jessica Chastain! She has hit it out of the park with an amazing 7 films this year, one of them being our favourite- Terrence Malick’s meditative ‘The Tree of Life’, in which Chastain plays the loving mother of a family growing up in 1950’s Waco, Texas. Chastain plays the film’s matriarch with a moving grace, and exhibits remarkably powerful emotive properties in the face for which she has implored full force in her segment as the frightening “Fire starter”.

It’s amazing how many thoughts, ideas, and feelings seem to rush in and out of her gorgeous alabaster face. Love the hair and glasses too! Even when she’s setting the world on fire, she cannot manage to look less gorgeous. We know you must be tired, but we are looking forward to more!


Truly terrifying is Viola Davis, who made her turn this year as the loving Aibileen in this summer’s hit “The Help”, as a deranged ladybug obsessed healthcare worker (Oh my!). There is not one inch of the sweet and caring Aibileen in this facet of Davis, who’s every move down to the inch just oozes pure evil. That’s one we know we will be dreaming of tonight!

But let’s hear it for the boy! Brad Pitt really does have some class. And by class I mean he’s extremely well rounded and brilliant and handsome and … Anyway, safe to say, he’s not to be beat, and he triumphantly showed off his ingenous talents twice this year; first, as a cunning baseball manager in Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball”, and then a triumphant turn playing against type as a strict, buttoned-up patriarch in Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life”.

They say things always happen in threes, and cover star Brad Pitt impresses one more time making a killing, and diving straight into the chilling world of Lynch’s cult classic “Eraserhead” in a minute that can only be described as stark raving madness. Transformation, yet again, this man should be proclaimed America’s national treasure.

There are many more supreme turns by some of this year’s most talented performers at the New York Times Magazine website where you can view the entire gallery that features amazing performances from Ryan Gosling, Michael Shannon, George Clooney, Kirsten Dunst, and everyone’s favourite villainess, Glenn Close (Who can forget her unhinged Alex in 1987’s ‘Fatal Attraction’? Not us!), to name a few. So check it out! It’s definitely worth the look!
