HOW HONEST ARE YOU? Vintage Educational PSA {c. 1950}

We showcased SHY-GUY (1947) and SELF-CONSCIOUS GUY (1951), but now its time to ask yourself “HOW HONEST ARE YOU?”

A high school basketball team gets in a bit of a mix-up thanks to a nosy girlfriend who needs to ask herself the question. What you saw, and what you heard are very different things, and the coach does a good job to illustrate this while also give some sure-fire tips to make sure your honesty is top notch!

Again, some really great vintage style inspiration; true classic Americana all around, while also showing some wicked 1950s sports looks which are as hot now as they were then. Obviously they thought nothing of it at the time, but today these looks still fly!

Vintage style is alive and well – just look around and open your eyes and you will see!!!

So, how honest are you, people? Check out the video below from OLD TIME TV and let us know in the comments below!!!

E.O.F {STYLE IDOL} + MARK FRECHETTE +

What do all of our E.O.F. {STYLE IDOLS & DIVINITIES} have in common?

Perhaps its a lust for life? A certain je na sais quois . . .  the X-factor; whatever you want to call it, these men and women are imbued with a magnetic spirit that entices us to go above and beyond- and invoke our deepest self!

Over the years, we’ve truly learned that cool  is absolutely timeless, and classic style never fades, but it never hurts to give your own zest over to showcase why you stand out from the crowd.

This week we are featuring the effortless style of American actor Mark Frechette – best known for his role in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 counter-culture cult classic Zabriskie Point.

Notoriously casted by Sally Dennison during a year long search to find America’s new rebel icon – Dennison spotted Frechette, a handsome 20 year old carpenter, throwing a flower pot at a woman on the streets of Boston (while another account describes him arguing vigorously with a third floor tenant of an apartment building), and the rest is history.

“He’s twenty, and he hates”

Sally Dennison

Bad ass to the core, don’t let this pretty face fool you – this guy’s got attitude for daze.

His effortless cool is emphasized by a distinctly American edge – denim shirts, oxford shirts, khakis, piercing blues, and perfectly unkempt brunette hair all juxtaposed by a rebellious heart. Very much a U.S. incarnation of Alain Delon (another E.O.F. {STYLE IDOL} )!

Mark Frechette quickly became a sensation even before the film was released, with much fuss and anticipation over Antonioni’s take on the counter-culture movement spreading like wildfire throughout the States. Frechette appeared on the cover of LOOK magazine, Rolling Stone, and even shot an editorial for VOGUE magazine in 1969 solidifying him as the next great all-American hero.

{source}

However, a wild heart has no bounds, and while Frechette made two films after Zabriskie Point  in Europe ( Many Wars (1970) & La Grand Scofa Negra (1971) ) – his acting career was prematurely cut short by his bad ass antics.

Aiming to collect 5 million dollars to produce an American take on Dostoyevsky’s classic Crime and Punishment alongside Hungarian film maker Dezso Magyar, Frechette attempted to rob a Boston bank at gunpoint . . . unsuccessfully.

“[M]y first friend was Mark Frechette, protagonist of the film Zabriskie Point. We wanted to make a film, to adapt a part of ‘Crime and Punishment’ because we felt that America was like a Dostoyevsky-type world. Mark said that he would get the money in Boston. He phoned me every second day and always assured me that he almost had the money. One day he called me and said that he would bring the 5 million dollars the next day. Great! I was watching TV in the evening when it was announced that … Mark Frechette attempted to rob a bank at gunpoint … and was arrested.”

{source}

So who knows what could of come from Mark Frechette’s career if he had gotten away with the robbery, and produced his dream film?!

Things unfortunately got even worse for the matinee idol who died in Prison from a tragic weightlifting accident involving a 150 lb barbell that fell onto his neck suffocating him to death, and reminding us all the importance of having a spotter when lifting heavy weights.

He was 27 years old.

Classic, right?!

They say only the good die young…

That just ain’t right.

WHO DO YOU THINK IS WORTHY OF WORSHIP?

{MUSIC MINUTE} LANA DEL REY’s “LOVE”: Is there life on Mars???

lana-del-rey-love-is-there-life-on-mars-the-eye-of-faith-vintage-inspiration-blog-shop-6

“It’s like she’s the only one that gets me”

                              {the internet}

We are proud to admit that we are absolutely obsessed with Lana Del Rey (along with the rest of the internet) – her melancholic croons and her unapologetic approach to bringing the {past} to the {present}, truly mirrors our own approach at The Eye of Faith to try and shape our {future}.

So, of course, we have been buzzing over her latest video drop just the other day for her new single “LOVE”. How apropos…

In true Lana style, her team takes us on a sweeping visual journey from grainy 1960s black and white realness to a dreamy extraterrestrial getaway for a pack of beautiful wayward youth. It’s like a picture from a dream; and no artist can really capture that mysteriously nostalgic vibe of needing to “escape our everyday” – I mean, who doesn’t want to escape to another planet with their best friends?

Truly breathtaking moments that conjure up feels from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and Lars Von Trier’s “Melancholia“. From floating trucks and many moons, to the spot on psych rock styling – this video is truly one of her greatest, and is not to be missed.

Vintage inspired posters of Lana Del Rey have been spotted plastered across the streets of Los Angeles, and elsewhere in California, so expect a big resurgence of the 21st Century’s truly unique Pop Diva this coming year!

Knowing how you feel about the things we love, we truly thought you’d appreciate “LOVE” by Lana Del Rey. Marvel at how so many inspirations truly have come to play to make this video come to life. That is what is so great, and important about staying {style-wise} – creatively, it can allow you to create a much richer and deeper experience which is exactly why we began The Eye of Faith in the first place!

So do enjoy the video below, and leave your comments when you are done, and stay tuned for more to come!

My Soul.
I summon to the winding ancient stair;
Set all your mind upon the steep ascent,
Upon the broken, crumbling battlement,
Upon the breathless starlit air,
“Upon the star that marks the hidden pole;
Fix every wandering thought upon
That quarter where all thought is done:
Who can distinguish darkness from the soul

-William Butler Yeats, excerpt from “A Dialogue of Self and Soul”

{MANIC MONDAY} Vintage “20/20” – “The Exorcism” circa 1991. REAL LIFE EXORCISM.

We wanted to start right out with the juice on this one, and take us straight into Part 2 of this disturbing segment from 20/20 back over 20 years ago. “The Exorcism” was the very first time the controversial rites of exorcism had ever been documented and aired on network television causing quite the stir.

20 years later the footage is as raw and disturbing as ever. Definitely beats the crap out of the Horror they try to feed you today. This kind of evil only exists in the twisted realms of our own reality.

Forget what you’ve seen – real life is always better {scarier}.

Question is: What do you believe?

Could the young 16 year old girl seriously be possessed by evil souls living deep in her body, or is this a battle of her rebellious teenage subconscious? This timeless battle between science and religion is carefully crafted by ABC correspondent Tom Jarriell with vintage appearances by the show’s anchors Hugh Downs, and the always stylin’ Barbara Walters.

Thanks to videoholics90s for the fantastically freaky clip! We’ll need to get our head back on straight after that, is for sure! Link from Youtube for the rest. Hope you enjoy!

{Music Minute} Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan”

In the spirit of the dunes we thought this timeless classic could definitely coincide. . .

This is an ode to Black Sabbath, the mystical heavy blues rockers from Birmingham who knew just the way to make their music crawl.

With the use of the occult and horror-inspired lyrics, and one-of-a-kind 1970s rock ‘n’ roll bohemian swag, we are definitely feeling a brotherhood with this unique quartet!

Pictures loaded by Graham Young, Birmingham Mail. The first ever picture taken of Black Sabbath taken in 1968 of Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, on a bank of grass close to Portland Road, Edgbaston. One hundred prints have been made at £495 each. Jim Simpson says: "If any one band can claim to be the originators of Heavy Metal, then that band is Black Sabbath. Strangely, Heavy Metal was not a term used in those days, though Sabbath certainly prided themselves on being heavier than any of their so-called rivals. In fact, their early publicity claimed, “Black Sabbath, the Heaviest Band Around. Makes Led Zeppelin sound like a kindergarten house band.” Quite how the Sabs changed from being a perfectly good blues band into the musical phenomenon that we all know and love is shrouded in mystery. It all started with Geezer Butler who contributed the band’s name as well as many of the songs. Their music developed naturally from then and it’s hard to indentify exactly what directly preceded it. Hendrix, yes, to a limited extent, but that only partly explains it. Whatever, Black Sabbath are THE Birmingham Rock Band. Ask yourself this. Who is the world’s most famous Brummie? Without doubt, it’s Ozzy. {STYLE WISE} Wild for Kicks! ‘Beat Girl’Est Tres Chic!

Wildforkickssoundtrack

From the cusp of 1960’s culture came a film documenting wild teen tomfoolery and squaller.  Daughter of local divorced architect father, was born Jenny; an impressionably sexy young woman who falls into the towns scene of beatnik culture and electric youth.

When Jenny’s divorced father Paul marries a Parisian woman named Nichole, Jenny’s distaste for the new woman in her life is immediate.  Her now ‘mother’ is not much older than vibrant Jenny which infuriates the teased haired beauty.  In a tit for tat attempt to expose Nichole’s seedy past, Jenny begins a journey into the dark side that is deeper than she could ever have planned for.  Discovering Nichole’s root’s in the unsavoury night scene abound with strippers and rock’n roll, Jenny is determined to undermine and manipulate Nichole to get whatever the fuck she wants.  Bad girl antics ensue while attracting the attention of Kenny, owner of the dance hall.

Full of cheese-ball rebels and hot girls this flick from 1960 delivers action and vulgarity.  We surely recommend this one if you are in the mood for a badass black and white.  We know we can never get enough of greaser culture and faster kill pussycats, this flick may just get you to buy a leather jacket and bleach your hair platinum blonde… but we suggest avoiding games of ‘chicken’ despite the peer pressure.

Until next time,

E.O.F. Presents +KNIGHTS OF THE SANDCASTLE+

knights of the sand castle 1

+KNIGHTS OF THE SANDCASTLE +

There once was a mysterious band of knights who roamed and raved their days and nights along the banks of the cool dark waters. Young and wild, they howled at the moon like the wolves, and on the clear days when the sun seemed to sparkle like diamonds on their faces, they stood sullen like statues of antiquity before cawing and cooing outrageously to their peers.

They sat watching the crowd waves roar; the boardwalk full of walking visitors, strange and new from far away places, that would all turn away in disdain from the boys of summer, sensing somehow their mighty position above it all . . .

knights of the sandcastle 4

knights of the sand castle 3

They weren’t there for the sights and sounds, instead vying for an order of things far from the distressing quarrels of everyday society.

Simple positions shared amongst them all. One assigned to watch, another to distribute, another to discover, and the rest to play by the rules. No one over stepped a turn at the bottle, for each one knew that their last could be any day.  Neville, one of the leaders, would say, ‘Never shy from your true colours’ and these they would display with unbroken pride.

knights of the sandcastle 2

knights of the sandcastle 6

Your honour was earned by the friendships you garnered and gathered.

Some say they had magic on their sides; magic powers taken from the ages, used to ensure their place along the sand dunes. Others say they made friends easily, but were actually ghosts playing games on the common folk.

Only one place in the world for them. A sacred fellowship that haunts us all to this day . . .

I like to imagine seeing them there every time I go back to the seaside. Guarding their little corner of the Earth, and protecting the small sliver of paradise they managed to claim as their own.

knights of the sandcastle 5

Sometimes I can hear them sing their favourite tune; a memory that wavers from faded dream to brilliant exuberance.

 It was a familiar one made their own by one of their musically gifted initiates –

“Going down to Stoney End.

 I never wanted to go down to Stoney End.

Momma let me start all over!

Cradle me Momma!

Cradle me Again . . . “
