But today, we wanted to showcase a strange new trend on the runways that was really epitomized by Moschino’s bondage inspired Pre-Fall/Winter 2018 collection: The Hidden Face!
Yes, indeed! Beautiful models covered in rubber latex so the only thing visible is their eyes and mouth mostly (very a la Season 1 of American Horror Story). For centuries people have seen faces in toast, trees, the moon …now it seems we are aiming to cover the face entirely…take a look at some pics below from the collection:
We weren’t too shocked however, because we had already been sourcing some strange style inspirations from the deepest depths of the web of +Larvatus Prode+ (“I wear a mask…”), and thought this would really appeal to our more adventurous readers who love when we explore the dark side of style!
Some cover up for modesty, others for pleasure, and many for secrecy and protection. Whatever the reason, these images truly fascinate us with their strange oddness and beauty.

According to the myth, she closed the jar leaving only HOPE inside.

It’s an age old tale going back to Ancient times, but the story is still permeating our landscape to this day.
Was Pandora just curious, or did she have a bit of a wild streak? You know how they say if your parents say not to do something, you’re going to do it. A little work of the Rebel Spirits, perhaps?
We wanted to make a {PHOTO BLAST} dedicated to the ultimate bad girl, and the many incarnations we saw of her. So please, enjoy!
It seems Summer is finally here, and with the warming weather we are sure to find ourselves in the midst of more and more adventure as the season rolls on.
Yes indeed, and probably for many, the joys of the Summer heat are sure to incite one or many exciting and unexpected journeys and voyages.
Whether they be jet setting the globe, or simply hopping the hoods of your own town or city, a true adventurer knows that as much as anything that looking good and feeling great on your exciting expedition is as much the fun as averting danger and uncovering sinister ploys against humanity . . .
So we couldn’t NOT visit the ultra-cool, hip, and happening, bad-ass, crime-fighting, science seeking, gun toting, mid-century realness of one we have always so admired- Mr. Jonny Quest.
Jonny starred in his own television series, created by Hannah Barbara (the folks that brought you “The Flinstones” and “The Jetsons“), called “Jonny Quest” which premiered in 1964 and would run for two seasons, ending in 1965.
The blonde boy in black and blue is indeed an unmatched original, with his sophisticated turban-wearing side-kick Hadji at his side, and his adorable pal Bandit; the two kick-ass kidsters found themselves against everything from ninjas, mummies, and giant robot spiders, to pterodactyls, and knife wielding scuba divers.
With careful wit, precise execution, charm, and a bit of luck they always seem to manage. . .
Also along for the ride, and taking part in festivities, are the equally style savvy father of Jonny, Dr. Quest, and his hunky white haired “bodyguard”, Race Bannon. Race is a strong and physical war vet who likes to spend his off-time in a bikini on the beach, while Dr. Quest takes his handsome ginger beard and lab coat inside to research new advancements in engineering, chemistry, and physics.
They make a great couple, if you ask me. And they take such great care of the kids (when they’re not putting them plain into the face of danger). . .
But, apart from the bizarre family dynamics described above, there’s no doubting that Jonny Quest has what it takes to be a bold and sophisticated taste-maker of today and tomorrow with his impeccably simple and classic get-up; one that can easily be recreated for yourself!

Though, there are plenty of options out there, the one that stood out for us was this Chunky Wool Knit Turtleneck by T BY ALEXANDER WANG ($265), because of its thicker knit that adds a bit more to the number. For the pants, we wanted to stay as close to Jonny’s light-blue washed denim look he has in the cartoon. With all the adventures he has been on, we figured this washed out and distressed look works great for achieving that true adventure spirit. We think we found the perfect pair here from Topman – The Bellfield Cabrera 5-Pocket Jean (£40.00).
5 Pockets are perfect for storing skeleton keys, pencils, chewing gum, notepads, compasses, anecdotes, pocket knives – all those things young adventurers would need for a good day of adventuring. Roll up the cuffs to stay truest to our vintage inspiration.
And last but not least, the shoes. Looks like our Jonny Quest look is almost complete! But not before we pick out the perfect pair of white sneakers to round out the look. Since Keds are so classic, and really became popular around Jonny’s time (the early 1960s), I can just picture Jonny kicking up his heels and running straight from whatever was chasing him in a pair of these puppies. They are always super affordable, durable, and timeless.
And that’s it! It was that easy. Now, the adventuring can begin, and vintage style can yet again win! ! !
If it aint broke, don’t fix it, they always say. The same thing goes for style. When we look back to the past at a great thing like Jonny Quest, we can’t help but let our style motors run on overdrive at the potential for greatness today with some of their amazing midcentury atomic takes on classic American sportswear and utilitarianism.
Everything about the cartoon was groundbreaking for the time, so in our heart we find ourselves beating to that same rebel beat, and wanting to keep this heritage alive and well. The graphic nature of the cartoon made for a revolutionary look on the screen (jet black was rarely used and never as heavily as before “Jonny Quest“, and the uber jazzy soundtrack was also another selling point towards a radical and refined new take on the adventure genre.
No doubt, a viewer could find new ideas and stories to tantalize and spark the imagination each and every time they watched the show, but very rarely are the characters’ unique and sophisticated sense of style brought to the forefront in this way.
That’s why we thought it important to see out this vintage style inspiration, the Jonny Quest way.

Which is exactly how this MGM Studios Promotional Film for a film by Renee Clement starring Alain Delon, Jane Fonda, & Lola Albright begins. (You love it already!)
Alain Delon, a favourite style star, is at his prime as the ridiculously handsome criminal on the run from the French Underground ( Yikes! The French Underground!), and Jane Fonda (“a foremost star of Europe”) is fiestier, sexier, and younger than you’ve ever seen her! Amazing!
One of the most interesting aspects is definitely getting to see some of the filming process! Check out how they shoot some incredible action right in the sea! No CG this time Movie!
The film was released as ‘Les Félins’ in Clement’s home country France, while in the US and UK it was released under two DIFFERENT names: “Joy House” (US), and “The Love Cage” (UK).
Promotional shorts like this one for MGM Studios, were not uncommon for the 60s, but you gotta love the special oomph the devil they chose to narrate this has with the gusto and punch he adds to his script. Maybe that’s the best part, but see for yourself!
I like that they mention “creating a spine chilling thriller is a painstaking, often dangerous business…”, as we at The Eye of Faith experience this almost everyday creating spine chilling thrillers in our minds for you to enjoy!

A slew of scandal has shaken the entertainment industry this year with release of Quentin Tarantino’s much anticipated new film “Django Unchained”, which tells of a newly freed slave and his journey with a bounty hunter to free his wife from the grip of a brutal plantation owner.
Tarantino, who is no stranger to controversy, is receiving criticism for his screenplay which uses the “N-word” (you know the one all the rappers throw out like Mardi-Gras beads from a parade float) over 100 times throughout the film, which is set in 1858, amidst the horrors of slavery in the Antebellum South.
While the film is visually stunning, and has received accolades, including 5 Academy Award nominations (Best Picture, Supporting Actor – Christoph Waltz, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Sound Editting), and a Golden Globe for Best Original Screenplay, many nay-sayers, including high-profile names such as director Spike Lee, are completely opposed to the film, claiming “It’d be disrespectful to my ancestors to see that film. That’s the only thing I’m going to say. I can’t disrespect my ancestors”.
And while the film is Tarantino’s most successful to date ( $186.76 million worldwide, topping his last effort, the WWII action flick “Inglourious Basterds”), the film can’t seem to get a break.
What it comes down to is that the past was a very scary place. One that to this day conjures deep and unsettling emotions.
On a similar note, contemporary American artist Kara Walker (best known for her silhouetted figures of Blacks and Whites living in dystopian disharmony in the romance of the Antebellum South) has also come under fire (once again) for another politically, racially, and sexually charged depiction of the horrors many African Americans faced prior to the Civil War that included a depiction of a black woman performing oral sex on a white man.
The drawing entitled “The moral arc of history ideally bends towards justice but just as soon as not curves back around toward barbarism, sadism, and unrestrained chaos” (2010), features bold and brash figures, in Walker’s signature drawing style, and are hurried across the picture, which has the community of Newark divided, after the drawing was covered by a cloth after its hanging on Thanksgiving in the Newark Public Library.
Just days ago, the drawing was reinstated to the walls of the New Jersey library, on the grounds that “The library should be a safe harbor for controversies of all types, and those controversies can be dealt with in the context of what is known about art, about literature, democracy and freedom,” according to Library trustee, and history professor at Rutgers University, Clement A. Price.
Granted, the African American experience is a sensitive issue, but as Price notes “”Should we be depicted sentimentally, romantically?” or “Should some of the grotesque realities be depicted in art or movies?” Kara Walker has also been invited for a presentation at the Library on the topic of artistic freedom and her role as a black artist to society.
Rather than shy from the harsh realities of this atrocious period in history, Walker’s work attacks it head on, and has gained respect worldwide as an artist who is unafraid of the truth of the matter. In fact, it is the “N-word” that started off the young artists’ career, adapting the persona of the “Negress” and exploring the racism, sex, violence, and mythos associated with African Americans throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, when slavery was at its height in both Canada and the US.
Through careful research, imagination, and pure fearlessness, Walker is able to uncover the hidden truths of the society we live in. On her own work, Walker says “I think my work sort of minimcs the past, but it’s all about the present. Oh, some great artist in the past, Courbet or somebody, said there’s no historical art that isn’t about present…” and “The work is two parts research and one part paranoid hysteria.”
Much like Walker, Tarantino’s vision of pre-Civil War America is based on a history that has been amplified, as so our 21st Century eyes and ears can hear and see the past in a clear light. In our world today, racism is no way condoned by anybody, but to forget about such a turbulent aspect of our society on the grounds that it is racist is completely naive. This controversy might be a sure sign that our society is in deep denial and conflict over the world we live in.
By shying away from the past, we do ourselves a complete disservice, and deny ourselves the chance to experience the present in its true form. Context is everything, and when dealing with the Antebellum south, the context is not going to be pretty. We should not try to make a romance of the tragedies that have preceded us. To do so could be the most racist thing of all. And we should not try to hide from younger generations the truth, when it has taken so long for us to uncover it.
2013 has been called a year of forgiveness, where past wounds can heal, and new dreams can be achieved. My dream would be to see a society that can own up to its past, and be OK with it – can that change the past? No. But it can allow for healing and forgiveness to those who are up in arms about it.
As for Tarantino in the matter, he brags to the L.A. times “Even for the movie’s biggest black detractors, I think their children will grow up and love this movie. I think it could become a rite of passage for young, black males.” Not only this, but think of Django as a hero who can represent overcoming the most difficult of challenges, and to give power to anyone in the world who feels they have been under the strains of any sort of oppression.
We can rise above. So, suck it up, 21st Century! It’s time to grow a pair!
