The Future is Now! Retro 90s Sci Fi on the A/W 2018 Runways…

Back in 1999 a quirky cool show came out called ZENON: Girl of the 21st Century and now that we are actually in the 21st century its cool to see they weren’t so far off!

We always say the past informs our future, so when speaking on this idea of retro-futurism its so fun to notice visions of the future from the past, and usually in this context we speak often of a retro-future from the 40s, 50s, even 60s . . .but now we are seeing retro-future ideas taken from the 90s.

Jeremy Scott really took it there 100% with this vibe in his Autumn-Winter 2018 collection from the pastel millenial metallic palette with strokes of neon… to some really quirky weird sci-fi silhouettes.

The wigs brought me back to another 90s sci-fi gem which may be a bit more obscure unless you lived in Canada than guaranteed you watched this show if you grew up in the 90s: SPACE CASES!!!

The show first aired back in 1996, and has since stuck in our minds as a really rad adventure series featuring some cool talent. I think the plot was best summed up by Bethany on IMDB:

One day at an academy, 7 people sneak aboard a mysterious spaceship. The people consist of 5 students, who are Harlan, the athletic leader from earth; Catalina, the Saturnian rainbow-head with a sonic scream; Bova, the negative sour-pus Uranian who can generate electricity; Rosie, the happy Mercurian who radiates heat; and Radu, the Andromedan with super strength and hearing; the other two people are Mrs. T.J. Davenport, the principal at the academy and Commander Seth Goddard, who is their teacher/commander. While on-board they meet an android named Thelma who informs them that they are on a spaceship that is half living and called the Christa. Just when they meet up they become aware that they are approaching a hole that if they get sucked into, they will be stuck in space for 7 years. They eventually do and along their journey they encounter many hardships and enemies that they work together to overcome. They also meet some new people like Suzee (Catalina’s imaginary friend from another dimension who gets pulled into this dimension during a warp, putting Catalina in her dimension; she can read minds and has gills), Elmira (Sponge daughter of Warlard Shank), Warlard Shank (the arch enemy of them), etc.

Thorough analysis. Thank you Bethany.

The wigs immediately gave me some serious Jewel Staite as Catalina vibes; although, hers is just that much more with the multi-colored rings representing her home planet Saturn. Am I wrong?

Oh, and sorry about the strange captions in the two photos there. They are entertaining, nonetheless. Since it is a more obscure show, it was hard to find some great images, but I think you get the vibe, and especially with a few of the looks from Jeremy Scott’s AW 2018 show sandwiched between- I think the inspirations are undeniable!

Boy, Canadian television in the 90s was wicked…and man, Jeremy Scott’s interns must have been binge watching some serious shit, because you can’t deny that the painted ladies of Jeremy Scott’s Moschino Autumn-Winter 2018 show really give me crazy Rosie comparisons!

Granted, Jeremy Scott’s inspiration for this collection was Jackie-O, Aliens, and Conspiracy Theories so its not that far off…

Some other designers you can’t deny took a very similar route were Prada:

And, Maison Margiela Couture Autmn-Winter 2018 which was a symphony of hologram! Our jaws were dropethed watching one look after another walk down the runway.

If you have a chance, watch the actual show so you can see how magically these fabrics react to light- its magnificent and really shows the art of textile design and the incredible things being engineered today.

{Watch the Maison Margiela Couture Autumn-Winter 2018 Show}

Since we are on this topic, I wanted to throw in some pics of a few more Canadian 90s aliens from the cult show ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? – episode: “The Thirteenth Floor”!!!

Two kids get lured by stylish 90s aliens to a strange toy company that just happened to open on the 13th floor of their apartment complex where they usually play floor hockey…moral of the story is, if you think its weird a toy company opened overnight on the 13th floor of your apartment complex then just stay away!!! Especially when they’re dressed like that!

Never would I have imagined in 20 years I’d be talking about Are You Afraid of the Dark or Space Cases in the context of fashion and style…its actually kind of shocking how many designers landed on this vibe, but nevertheless its really interesting to have this kind of nostalgia prevalent in the scene, and no doubt we will be seeing more and more of this as time goes on.

The {past} repeats itself, even if that {past} is imitating the {future}!

Something about this vibe has always been in us, and we have been tending to lean towards this style many times – from metallic foil shirts, to PVC jackets, and definitely anything hologram! I guess, we like to be ahead of the curve, and it really goes to show the power in staying relevant with the past.

Here are a few pieces in our {SHOP} right now that epitomize the 90s Back to the Future vibe that is taking over!

Could Ya KAMA SUTRA ?

The Kama Sutra is an ancient Hindu text written by Indian philosopher Vātsyāyana between 400 and 200 BCE, and is an in-depth manual on “virtuous and gracious living that discusses the nature of love, family life, and other aspects pertaining to pleasure-oriented faculties of human life” – however, today in popular culture it is probably most well-known for its comprehensive list of sexual positions.

From mild to wild and everything in between, the Kama Sutra is definitely an amazing resource to spice up your sex-life, and no one knew this better than the Victorians! Privately published by popular orientalist writer Sir. Richard Francis Burton in 1883, the erotic world of the Kama Sutra coupled with the discovery of the Khajuraho Group of Temples in the 1830s brought a special spice to the otherwise bland and well-mannered world of the Victorians.

Imagine the shock! Although, I’m sure we’re all aware of Queen Victoria’s kinks – having forced her husband Prince Albert to pierce his penis to help restrain it to ensure a flat front seam in his trousers….is this a myth? We might never know. But, we know that they were curious!

+CHECK OUT ACTOR RUPERT EVERETT’S JOURNEY TO DISCOVER THE WORLD OF SIR. RICHARD FRANCIS BURTON’S VICTORIAN EROTIC ESCAPADES+

We’ve covered the film Bram Stoker’s Dracula quite a few times on our blog for its insatiable style inspiration (courtesy of Eiko Ishioka’s special genius), and one of our favourite scenes involves Lucy and Mina giggling over a copy of the Kama Sutra.

[warning: clip in Spanish]

“So long as lips shall kiss, and eyes shall see,so long lives this ,and this gives life to thee.” …

Vātsyāyana

So, with these things in mind, we couldn’t help but take the opportunity to bring you a beautiful treasure from the {past} and invite it to the {present} to help invigorate the {future}!

This is a very rare and unusual piece that we are sure someone out there needs to rock!

{MUSIC MINUTE} “Bad and Boujee” x “September” Soul Train Mash-Up!

when you try to be some lavish bitch, but you know you’re not.

The {PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE} are always in beautiful syncopation with each other, and we’re not just talking style! Yes, there is a rising popularity in shopping and wearing vintage (HALLELUJAH!), and more and more high fashion designers are ripping from vintage styles- but we see this trend in movies and music, too!

Would a show like “Stranger Things” even be as popular if it weren’t set in the 80s? And we keep seeing an influx in nostalgia everywhere you go.

Give it up for Ric Wilson‘s ridiculously awesome mash-up of Migo’s hit song “Bad and Boujee” with Earth, Wind, & Fire’s iconic song “September” for a wicked funky take on this song that never ceases to make you want to put on a wicked outfit and look fly AF.

Take a listen!

We know it’s not everyone’s cup a’ tea, but you can’t deny how perfectly these two jams sync up – not to mention how awesome it is always to watch Soul Train dancers shred the dance floor.

So, in this spirit, we were inspired by both the “Bad and Boujee” video, as well as the funkedelic soul of the 1970s to bring you a few options to invoke the spirit!

E.O.F {STYLE IDOL} + MARK FRECHETTE +

What do all of our E.O.F. {STYLE IDOLS & DIVINITIES} have in common?

Perhaps its a lust for life? A certain je na sais quois . . .  the X-factor; whatever you want to call it, these men and women are imbued with a magnetic spirit that entices us to go above and beyond- and invoke our deepest self!

Over the years, we’ve truly learned that cool  is absolutely timeless, and classic style never fades, but it never hurts to give your own zest over to showcase why you stand out from the crowd.

This week we are featuring the effortless style of American actor Mark Frechette – best known for his role in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 counter-culture cult classic Zabriskie Point.

Notoriously casted by Sally Dennison during a year long search to find America’s new rebel icon – Dennison spotted Frechette, a handsome 20 year old carpenter, throwing a flower pot at a woman on the streets of Boston (while another account describes him arguing vigorously with a third floor tenant of an apartment building), and the rest is history.

“He’s twenty, and he hates”

Sally Dennison

Bad ass to the core, don’t let this pretty face fool you – this guy’s got attitude for daze.

His effortless cool is emphasized by a distinctly American edge – denim shirts, oxford shirts, khakis, piercing blues, and perfectly unkempt brunette hair all juxtaposed by a rebellious heart. Very much a U.S. incarnation of Alain Delon (another E.O.F. {STYLE IDOL} )!

Mark Frechette quickly became a sensation even before the film was released, with much fuss and anticipation over Antonioni’s take on the counter-culture movement spreading like wildfire throughout the States. Frechette appeared on the cover of LOOK magazine, Rolling Stone, and even shot an editorial for VOGUE magazine in 1969 solidifying him as the next great all-American hero.

{source}

However, a wild heart has no bounds, and while Frechette made two films after Zabriskie Point  in Europe ( Many Wars (1970) & La Grand Scofa Negra (1971) ) – his acting career was prematurely cut short by his bad ass antics.

Aiming to collect 5 million dollars to produce an American take on Dostoyevsky’s classic Crime and Punishment alongside Hungarian film maker Dezso Magyar, Frechette attempted to rob a Boston bank at gunpoint . . . unsuccessfully.

“[M]y first friend was Mark Frechette, protagonist of the film Zabriskie Point. We wanted to make a film, to adapt a part of ‘Crime and Punishment’ because we felt that America was like a Dostoyevsky-type world. Mark said that he would get the money in Boston. He phoned me every second day and always assured me that he almost had the money. One day he called me and said that he would bring the 5 million dollars the next day. Great! I was watching TV in the evening when it was announced that … Mark Frechette attempted to rob a bank at gunpoint … and was arrested.”

{source}

So who knows what could of come from Mark Frechette’s career if he had gotten away with the robbery, and produced his dream film?!

Things unfortunately got even worse for the matinee idol who died in Prison from a tragic weightlifting accident involving a 150 lb barbell that fell onto his neck suffocating him to death, and reminding us all the importance of having a spotter when lifting heavy weights.

He was 27 years old.

Classic, right?!

They say only the good die young…

That just ain’t right.

WHO DO YOU THINK IS WORTHY OF WORSHIP?

LET US KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW!

+

ITCHING FROM INSPIRATION? GET THE LOOK!

Mark Frechette is all about being effortless and relaxed. To keep it fresh, play with different textures, and look for cool details like embroidery or subtle patterns like stripes.

Pair it with your favourite pair of jeans, and a pair of desert boots and you’re pretty much set.

The most important piece to gather is your bad ass confidence- the most versatile accessory. This will truly elevate the look, and any other spirit you wish to invocate.

Here’s some ideas by yours truly!

GIVE A GIFT THAT MATTERS IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE! MIJLO: A Better Knapsack

2b7ef10cbd93cc56d3989ac543a6390b_large

Like any legitimate secret society, we here at The Eye of Faith are dedicated to the sole purpose of bettering our world. We often refer to our mission in terms of style and through education of the {PAST} to help inform the {PRESENT} and thereby shape the {FUTURE}.

Apart from this, we’re also dedicated to the reduction of waste in landfills by reclaiming vintage pieces to be reincarnated and re-appropriated to today’s fashion scene, and enjoy a a new life in our {SHOP}. This green initiative is luckily something on many minds these days, and doing your part for the cause can help dramatically shift our destiny.

Another brand who has taken to the green is the wicked start-up MIJLO, which aims to not only provide well-tuned, timeless accessories for the world, but hopes to also make an impact on the environment through a dedication to sustainability.

8fcff3e625d843d166f62d96fe79d749_large

Here’s what they have to say:

At MIJLO, we believe that fashion doesn’t have to be fast, or disposable, or temporary….We believe a product’s lifespan should be as timeless as its design – simplicity and sustainability were an integral part of our design process.

Headed by designer Daniel Eckler, the brand is quickly making grounds in launching their product through a campaign on Kickstarter, and is already closing on $75,000 to get the wheels in motion.

And again, it doesn’t cost a million bucks to go green – in fact, only $39 and you get an exclusive Eco Print made from seed paper to literally watch your investment grow. How fucking cool is that?

I know I’ll be getting myself one of these this Christmas, and not only would you be getting a really rad knapsack for yourself or someone special, but you’ll also be helping an innovative team of design intellectuals grow, but you might just also save the planet.

You have until the 27th to make your mark. So please, check out the campaign on Kickstarter by clicking here and do your part to make this world a better place!

Give a gift that matters in more ways than one!
