Cannes Honours Alain Delon {STYLE IDOL} to the MAX!

Alain Delon was one of our first ever {STYLE IDOL} posts on The Eye of Faith, and quickly became and remains one of our most popular delves into classic timeless cool vintage style. It’s not a surprise – this guy just oozes bad ass nonchalant elegance, sophistication, and beauty!

He is always portrayed as a dangerous type, a rebel, a bad boy, a beautiful bad ass . . . but still very clean cut and classic.

So this year when we found out that the French bad boy would be honoured (and justly so) at this year’s Cannes Film Festival we were thrilled!

For his “wonderful presence in the history of film” the award is definitely  just, but delving back into his timeline of wicked looks over the past 50+ years it is impossible to deny his presence in the history of style, as well!

So, in honour of this God of Style we delved deeper into our archive of looks from an icon who is on the level of James Dean or Marilyn Monroe. We are fortunate enough to have him with us still today!

Not all the rebels die young…in fact, you can watch his acceptance speech here (it is in French):

We checked out this brilliant list of 12 of his best cult classics from DW to find some super vibes we hadn’t picked up on in our initial post 7 years ago (yikes!). From baroque to gangster, from dapper to scuba, modern playboy to Victorian dandy…he does it all!

One thing’s for sure …

No one rocks a cut on their face quite like him!

Bless his soul

{FAVOURITE FIND} 1930’s BAD ASS COOL DUDES PREP SCHOOL GROUP PHOTO!!!

These boys clearly know what’s up!

We love photos like these that go to prove the notion of ‘cool’ is absolutely timeless!!! We might argue that these guys bring ‘cool’ to a level that we barely even reach these daze. . .

We’re all consumed by our social media accounts, and the latest trend – meanwhile, these boys understand true camaraderie, having fun, looking good, and not taking life so seriously!

It’s fun also to imagine the in’s and out’s of these boys life outside the frame. They are, indeed, a very eclectic bunch, and who even knows what this photo was taken for?

We believe its some kind of class photo from a prep school, and judging from the wear on the photo, and their clothes – taken sometime in the 1930s. The handsome devil in the striped sweater vest in the centre of the group is obviously the ring leader. Love his buddies chilling on the stone orbs flanking the stairs.

Its photos like these that make you wish you could dive right into these photos and experience the moment – lucky for us, we have a singular moment captured forever with the magic of sunlight and silver.

We picture this framed for your home or workplace, or simply as some true style inspiration . . .

Making an Impact: “Don’t You Dare” by The Impacts {and the Mystery of “Kelly”}

Here’s a newly uncovered lost treasure we happened to find lying about. What a shame. This is one that is sure to have you grinding and grooving all the night through. Just shy of making you want to howl at the moon. This one’s called “Don’t You Dare” and it’s played by none other than The Impacts.

Hopefully we’ve all been there. That terrible yearning, the endless nights. Incredible emotions. Melting.

I am bound to a fate worse than death if I don’t have you around

Tell me how you really feel! The track really has the ability to bring you back. Back to a time. Back to a place.

Originally The Fogcutters, the band based out of St. Martin’s High School in Lacey, Washington delivers all the sadness and cool you could expect from the illustriously mysterious Pacific Northwest.

Locked in the bowels of a boarding school, the troupe of 8 would find constant challenge in having members from two States (Washington and Oregon), and the struggle to find a place to practice amongst the monks and cloisters of their privileged boarding Academy. The School on a Hill.

Usually when thinking “ivy style”, that ultimate mid-century academic cool you automatically think athletic. You think the jocks and their varsity jackets, cardigans, t-shirts- the whole bit. But with The Impacts you have that same All-American Vintage Academia with the radness only being part of a rock ‘n’ roll band can lend a young group of Dapper Dans! You have to admit, it just sounds good.

You might not always get the cheerleader, but who cares. They’re boring. They’d be doing homework instead of catching your shows. God knows how bad the world falls for a good boy band. Also, think groupies. Groupies. Catch a falling star, right?

The Impacts would make their run from 1961-1964 and ultimately consisted of 8 members. All have been accounted for except the 5th member, the original rhythm guitar. His first name unknown, all he is remembered as is his last name – “Kelly”

All in all, I get a real sense of mystery from these pictures, and this song. Not to mention, the mystery of “Kelly”, and his elusive first name. Have any clues or premonitions?

History {Is Made At Night} – The Poison Apple That Killed The Father of Computer Science

There is no doubt that the world would not be the same place if it hadn’t been for Alan Turing [b. 23 June 1912 – d. 7 June 1954]. In fact, you wouldn’t be reading this delectable morsel if it weren’t for the incredible genius of this British mathematician in developing the modern day computer.

A prophet of mathematics, with a natural inclination to numbers and science, Turing entered King’s College in 1931 and graduated Honors in Mathematics pioneering the working model for the Turing Machine, which operated on “Algorithims” that would make computing any mathematical problem conceivable. Obtaining a PhD from Princeton in June 1938, Turing  furthered his concepts introducing oracles that could plan and solve complex problems that the Turing Machine was unable to compute.

It wasn’t until war time that Turing’s incredible genius would truly be implored, joining the German code-breaking team at Bletchley Park in September 1938. Using his profound wizardry in the realm of numbers, Turing was able to develop a statistical approach using computing machines to decode the impossible German Enigma-codes. This would ultimately provide the Allies with a major advantage in winning the war.

Turing was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services during wartime.

Turing also applied his mathematical brilliance in the fields of biology, imploring mathematical thought to the idea of pattern formation in nature. He also used mathematics to develop the foundations for the science behind morphogenesis – how biological forms come to be.

So in short, a {Hero}.

However, although interesting, it’s not his mathematic, scientific, or civil achievements that really caught our attention. It is, in fact, his mysterious and bizarre death.

It all began quite innocently – the way these things always begin. After being victim to a petty burglary of his home in January of 1952, police investigations opened the flood gates, revealing Turing’s homosexuality, which in fact was illegal in the UK at this point. Wanting to evade going to prison, Turing was able to go on probation after agreeing to a chemical castration that would require him to take injects of stilboestrol, a synthetic estrogen hormone.

Perhaps the injects caused moments of weakness or uncertainty, as various mood disorders and physical ailments have now been attributed to stilboestrol. And while he is recorded as throwing “such a jolly [tea] party” for a neighbour and her son four days before he died, he was found in the most macabre of circumstances: laying in bed with a half-eaten apple at his side.

If this sounds like fairy tale, don’t be mistaken, the past is a twisted and dark place, but there’s no denying the comparison to Turing’s death and the story of Snow White and The Seven Dwarves – Turing’s recorded favourite fairy tale. Novelist David Leavitt quotes that the mathematical genius took “an especially keen pleasure in the scene where the Wicked Queen immerses her apple in the poisonous brew.”

Many have speculated that Turing may have soaked the apple in poison as an homage to his favorite tale of dark pleasure and deceit, others (his mother particularly) have asserted that Turing was in fact just careless when it came to storing his lab chemicals. Whatever the truth may be, the circumstances surrounding Turing’s untimely demise are as fascinating as his science. His death was ruled a suicide, but recent discoveries seem to point in other directions.

Perhaps it was just a way to say good-bye to a cruel world, unwilling to accept the man, no matter how great his genius. He was but the innocent, and it was a truly unjust society that would poison the likes of such an incredible mind.

Luckily, Turing’s legacy lives on every we look. From this computer screen, to our televisions, and phones, the airplanes in the sky, the subway beneath my feet – all these things and more would not be possible without Turing’s ingenuity and courage to innovate.

Can we say ‘Hello 21st Century’!

Sincerely,

Formed in 1971, Roxy Music lives on today as one of the most popular bands there have ever been, and were even honoured by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “Immortal” in a list of their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

We’d have to go ahead, and add them to our Best-Dressed Artists of All Time list with their wild nod to the past injected with the blinding buzz of Glam Rock England. We included a few pictures of these Idols, and were hoping the song be a great way to settle down into the night.

We’ve been seeing a lot of these, as of late, on our virtual style quests, and find this mythic hairstyle’s history absolutely fascinating. Getting Down To Business! Stylish Business Fashion for Men

When it comes to fashion, men often find it rather challenging to create their own style.

The reason for this, arguably, may be that men’s fashion is more streamlined with often fewer options to create an individual look and style. This is especially true in business fashion, where the dress-codes for men tend to be exactly defined.

While clearly defined dress-codes make the selection for the right business attire easier, they also hold one decisive disadvantage for the stylish and style-conscious man: this uniformity makes it a lot harder to create an individual style.

This is where stylish men’s accessories come into play. They provide a subtle way of underlining one’s own style and sense of fashion in the often rigid business world. This is why, when it comes to stylish business accessories, the devil is in the detail.

Getting Down to Business- Boyer- by-the sartorialist

Hereby, the tie that one wears in combination with the suit can be a statement in itself.

The tie is the part of the business attire that shows the largest variation in colors, patterns and styles. When picking a tie, it should provide a contrast to the shirt, which can be created by observing some color matching patterns. The style-conscious man will seek to stand out in the streamlined business fashion by either wearing a stylish shirt or a unique tie.

On the contrary, brands like Cartier are more popular than ever before, since they provide an essentially manly accessory that combines technology, fine craftsmanship and art.
