{MUSIC MINUTE} “Bad and Boujee” x “September” Soul Train Mash-Up!

when you try to be some lavish bitch, but you know you’re not.

The {PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE} are always in beautiful syncopation with each other, and we’re not just talking style! Yes, there is a rising popularity in shopping and wearing vintage (HALLELUJAH!), and more and more high fashion designers are ripping from vintage styles- but we see this trend in movies and music, too!

Would a show like “Stranger Things” even be as popular if it weren’t set in the 80s? And we keep seeing an influx in nostalgia everywhere you go.

Give it up for Ric Wilson‘s ridiculously awesome mash-up of Migo’s hit song “Bad and Boujee” with Earth, Wind, & Fire’s iconic song “September” for a wicked funky take on this song that never ceases to make you want to put on a wicked outfit and look fly AF.

Take a listen!

We know it’s not everyone’s cup a’ tea, but you can’t deny how perfectly these two jams sync up – not to mention how awesome it is always to watch Soul Train dancers shred the dance floor.

So, in this spirit, we were inspired by both the “Bad and Boujee” video, as well as the funkedelic soul of the 1970s to bring you a few options to invoke the spirit!

+STYLE STAR+ El Principe Gitano, JJ Reyes !

style star jj reyes 3

The stars in the sky will shine bright tonight knowing that we pay tribute to one of their brightest young consorts. As we are always expressing here at The Eye of Faith, style is about the attitude, and bringing a truly individual edge that will set you apart from the rest, and the +STYLE STAR+ we have chosen this week invokes all these attributes and more.

JJ Reyes is a talented style savant from Seville, Spain, showcasing his passion for things fashion on his personal style blog El Principe Gitano. On top of JJ’s ultra rad and sophisticated take on style, his site is a beautiful escape to some of Spain’s most iconic and beautiful landmarks.

This handsome Gypsy Prince took the time to let us pick his brain on his unique style, the things he loves most, and the future seen through his most exceptional and unique eye!

style star jj reyes 4

First, a bit of an introduction to yourself. What is your name, and what do you do?

My name is JJ Reyes, I am studying Advertising & PR in Seville (Spain), where I live. I have a fashion blog titled ‘The Gypsy Prince’ (http://www.elprincipegitano.com) that I opened a year ago. It has more than 50.000 visits, with the intention of sharing a virtual space to show my ambitions, concerns, places, pleasures and even the people who usually are next to me.

I am in love with everything about fashion and trends, a passion I show weekly on the blog through my different looks. I am also working as a DJ and model.

What would be your earliest fashion memory, and has it played a part in leading you to your fashion future?

I don’t think I will ever give an answer to this question, since I have no clear memory of fashion in my childhood. However, I can assure you it wasn’t until 14 years old when I began to focus my attention on fashion, which led me to an evident change of style in my early teen years.

When you wake up in the morning, what thoughts go through your mind while picking out your outfit for the day?

I always have in mind a specific garment that I want to wear, just that one. The other garments that go with it appears in my mind while I am standing in front of the closet. Obviously, the weather is an important element when I am choosing what I’m going to wear.

style star jj reyes 10

style star jj reyes 6

Do you have any go-to inspirations or style idols you look up to in your own style?

I don’t. I just want to have something from these three groups: 90s, Bloggers and Disney. I want the camera equipment of Chiara Ferragni, I want Pocahontas’ black long hair and I also want to make love to 90’s Kate Moss and Johnny Depp couple. I really think that my own style is the mix of random elements that apparently have no sense together to create the perfect look.

What has been your most important lesson in life when it comes to your own personal brand of style?

Biggest lesson in fashion life is undoubtedly swimming at the middle. The best thing is to stay there, between austerity and excess.

style star jj reyes 11

style star jj reyes 7

Where are your favourite go-to spots to go for killer fashion and style?

I am a big fan of Spanish brand ZARA. It gets to you every single huge prèt-a-porter trend from the catwalk to their worldwide stores.

You’re walking down the street and stumble upon a time portal that will take you anywhere you want to go in the history of time. Where do you decide to take it, and why?

90s. I want to make love to Kate Moss and Johnny Deep couple.

Vintage 90s Johnny Depp and Kate Moss

Here’s a fun one. You’ve accidentally conjured up an angry spirit who won’t get the hell out of your closet. You want to call the cops, but you know they won’t believe you so you pull out your exorcism kit and go to work. What is the one thing you are hoping to save from your wardrobe?

Doc Martens boots, I can’t live without them.

style star jj reyes 5

style star jj reyes 2

What is the worst fashion advice you’ve ever heard or been given?

The worst fashion advice is when your friend is tired of shopping with you and put on her “It’s okay, it fits you well’’ face when you are trying some clothes, because all that she wants is you to buy those fucking jeans so she can leave the store.

Any thoughts of the future of mens fashion and/or fashion in general, through the eyes of J.J. ?

Skirts. A Texas conservative man wearing a Givenchy skirt, that could be a great accomplishment for men’s fashion industry in the future.

style star jj reyes 1

And wouldn’t that be a sight for sore eyes . . .

Thanks so much to JJ Reyes for taking the time to sit down with {theEye}, only at The Eye of Faith!

Rock On El Principe Gitano!

INDIA INSPIRATION.

The fashion world is a buzz for Karl Lagerfeld’s oppulent Maharajah musings in his latest collection for Chanel, Pre-Fall 2012. A grand opus to all the glamour and societal decadence you could imagine to spill from Monsieur Lagerfeld’s vivid fashion fantasies he has delivered for the last four decades.

His nod to the heyday of the royal courts of India and the evening moods of the British Raj are a spectacle [not to mention the venue itself- a feast for the eyes, done up in true Maharajah decadence], with his models donning Goan dreadlocks, and sporting nose and ear piercings of the Devadasi- he brings all the formal elegance of the court, plus a bit of rock and roll nasty to the entirety.

Mr. Chanel must have had the pleasure of viewing Ernest & Young’s “Maharajah” exhibition, which we had the pleasure of viewing last year at the AGO. Lagerfeld quotes his collection “a concept of India. More Chanel than India. The Parisian version of an India that doesn’t exist”, and we’re definitely taking the voyage.

What’s wonderful is the mix of pattern, texture, and playing with ornamentation are what really take the cake, and that’s what really makes it real rich France . . . for which Monsieur Lagerfeld is by now, a Crowned Jewel. Didn’t know he was such a Bad-Ass, or at least, his girls reflect that.

Moreover, the collection included several takes of menswear that are equally sublime in both craftsmanship, and ornamentation. We love the classic strokes, precise details and accessories, and utopian Eurasian decadence come to life, not to mention the same Bad-Ass appeal as forementioned. Lagerfeld succeeds in creating further modern mythologies of man.

Guessing it ultimately depends on your own personal Bad-ass-ness in the end of things.

Start getting ready for the forthcoming of gems, rhinestones, pearls, and paisley. Any proper Dandy knows all it takes is getting dressed in the morning. We’re seeing it tomorrow, so why not start your outfit today. Call it culture clash; more than East meets West. The Jewel in the Crown. God Save the Queen. A little Tikka Masala while we’re at it.

“All the people like us are we, and everyone else is They.”

Being shy is no mood for a king- nay, a Maharajah. Mixing textiles, patterns, and exotic jewelry with a British academia aesthetic is a surefire way to kickstart the look into the new year. Doesn’t have to be campy, at all, and treading the line between the exotic and the everyday always leads one to a higher ground. The look is spiritual and sublime, decadence and oppulence supremo.

India has been on our mind since French model extraordinaire Patrick Petijean took on the role with Nathaniel Goldberg back in 2008, fusing the wild jungles of India’s core with a fine aristocratic edge simply only for the wild at heart.

Trends come and go, but strokes of inspiration are interventions from the divine. So here goes some images to help make you walk the walk. All taken from the past, sharing with us for a newer tomorrow.

[CAUTION: In no way do we support Imperialism, the by-product of Colonialism. Imperialism was born out of the ignorance and disregard to the beautiful ethnic and cultural diversities existent in our world. Many lives have been trampled and destroyed by the armies of Imperialism- India is no exception. The world is not meant to be owned, operateted, and managed. The heydey of Imperialism is long over, but the results and consequences are still being seen today. We must learn from the past, as so greedy power-hungry leaders cannot do the same wrongs today. The war for resources is on, and we cannot make the same mistakes again.]

E.O.F. Approved: Vintage Mens 1940s/1950s Tiger Sweater

Anyone who thinks vintage shopping is all drab and dust has got it all wrong. Case in point, this handsome 1940s/1950s era ‘Bud Berma’ Sweater with Tiger!

‘Bud Berma’ is one of the original purveyors of menswear in America, and while I’ve mostly seen your typical flannel checks from the brand, this is definitely one rare and unique catch! We’re always on the hunt, like vintage fashion predators, looking for the coolest finds.

Be the one on the prowl! Love the emerald green tiger everywhere, and definitely love those Varsity stripes. This is Academic style with an edge. You could take your look anywhere with this one: clean cut, grunge, rockabilly, punk, or preppy- it’s all up to you how you’re feeling. Definitely something fun to accessorize too. You’ll be turning heads, for sure!

This super cool find is currently up for grabs, but don’t take too long, there seems to be a lot of interest! Click here for it to be yours.

E.O.F. Approved: Vintage ‘Flying Tigers’ Jacket

The famous Flying Tigers fighter squadrons of WWII definitely were a group of bad-ass troops! Being the “1st American Volunteer Group” (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force between 1941-1942. While most of the news in the U.S. came back in defeat by Japanese Forces, the ‘Flying Tigers’ used innovation, skill, and above all style, to make a crash landing fight to victory. Some also argue the men as mercenaries working under hefty contracts from the Chinese Government. Either way, we have to admit these men had some guts.

Check out this extremely rare WWII Avirex A-2 Chinese Air Force Bomber Flight Military Leather Jacket (say that three times fast). Such great condition, and with a story to tell too. Takes a real hero to pull this one off.

When looking for vintage leather pieces, always look for that beautiful distressing that happens to leather when it’s been worn. Why spend a lifetime getting a jacket to the most perfect soft wear, if you can get one whose already had a lifetime of use? And in this case, very exciting use!

Check out the Blood Chit tag at the back! This is the most fascinating bit of history sewn on the back with the Blood Chit used to identify a friend. Love seeing clothes as a communication tool on such a huge level.

Keep history alive, and rock this coat with a slick pair of dark denim jeans, and a simple white t-shirt. Couldn’t even imagine a cooler coat.

Want it? Check it out.
