{MUSIC MINUTE} “ZODIACS” by Roberta Kelly

Well isn’t that just too totally up our alley . . . Ms. Robert Kelly sings “Zodiacs” a funky 1970s disco-era tune about our favourite astrological symbols; all performed in timelessly popping canary yellow!

Sorry Beyonce, but looks like Robert Kelly was rocking this shade of yellow far before the Queen B helped this colour take over the style scene; but that’s just the name of the game! If it was cool once, its gonna be cool forever – so, lest we forget:

{PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE} unite!

Hold up, they don’t love you like WE love you Roberta!

Thanks for giving us this joyous tune. Hope you enjoyed it, too…

{MUSIC MINUTE} “Bad and Boujee” x “September” Soul Train Mash-Up!

when you try to be some lavish bitch, but you know you’re not.

The {PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE} are always in beautiful syncopation with each other, and we’re not just talking style! Yes, there is a rising popularity in shopping and wearing vintage (HALLELUJAH!), and more and more high fashion designers are ripping from vintage styles- but we see this trend in movies and music, too!

Would a show like “Stranger Things” even be as popular if it weren’t set in the 80s? And we keep seeing an influx in nostalgia everywhere you go.

Give it up for Ric Wilson‘s ridiculously awesome mash-up of Migo’s hit song “Bad and Boujee” with Earth, Wind, & Fire’s iconic song “September” for a wicked funky take on this song that never ceases to make you want to put on a wicked outfit and look fly AF.

Take a listen!

We know it’s not everyone’s cup a’ tea, but you can’t deny how perfectly these two jams sync up – not to mention how awesome it is always to watch Soul Train dancers shred the dance floor.

So, in this spirit, we were inspired by both the “Bad and Boujee” video, as well as the funkedelic soul of the 1970s to bring you a few options to invoke the spirit!

{MUSIC MINUTE} “Nothing but a Heartache” by The Flirtations

The Fabulous Flirtations- The Eye of Faith Vintage

the flirtations- mystery abbey - the eye of faith vintage

Nothing but a heartache every day  . . . must be nice.

We were drawn to this dynamic trio whilst listening to our favourite box set of Girl Group classics, and couldn’t resist but share this dazzling number with you.

The video is a rare promotional video shot for their single that depicts the beautiful Flirations amidst the mysterious ruins of what seem to be a church or abbey, the kind we are used to seeing when we picture romantic landscapes, or the English countryside. Northern soul was very popular in England, so perhaps, they made a trip across the water to shoot it.

Certain conspiracy theorists, might have some ideas, I’m sure. Music Industry. Need I say more?

THE FLIRTATIONS- vintage style inspiration- music minute- nothing but a heartache - 1968- the eye of faith

We like to let mysteries stay mysteries now and then . . . if anyone knows more about this, they should share it in the comment section below!

The song was originally record in 1968 by the South Carolina trio and peaked at #34 on the charts in the US, making it to #3 in Boston. The song was relatively popular world wide, but didn’t hit the Top 50 in the UK, settling at 51.

We picture listening to this song on a rain day . . .

Many young men and women must have shaken their tail to this over the years, so lets keep the tradition strong, and carry this fantastic song into the future!

We’ve been milling over 1960s girl group style the past weeks, so expect to see it make its way into our labyrinth of inspiration more and more over the coming days and hours . . .

E.O.F. Presents + THE SACRED ORDER OF THE GOLDEN DAWN +

sacred order 1

 AMINUS FACIT NOBILEM.

{“The Spirit Makes The Human Noble.”}

Getting ready for school or work, you might have noticed that day by day you are submitting to any number of rituals. Whether it’s washing your face or prepping for your day at the mirror, all these little things add up to make the recipe for the spell that will hopefully get you through the day. . .

This is a tradition as old as time itself. It seems so simple at first, almost unnoticeable if you haven’t thought about it, but our daily routines and the simple act of getting ready for the day is as powerful as any incantation.

sacred order 6

Focus is key, as you don’t want to invoke the wrong spirit for the day.  But if you are able to summon from deep within that one spirit that can transform you, and in turn, how you are perceived by the world, then you have a real chance of winning. But, making that metamorphosis is something only a genuine and true individual can truly take on.

For centuries, hundreds, maybe thousands, of secret societies have existed looking to possess the power of these sacred secret spirits. From the mysteries of Egypt and Ancient Greece, to Yeats’ and Crowley’s “Golden Dawn”, to the secret dormitories of the Ivy League, members of certain sacred orders have endured through the ages and kept alive this powerful knowledge.

The most powerful spirit they hope to set free is that of the ‘Rebel‘. The most courageous and strong of any being. The ‘Rebel’ is fearless and has been able to survive with its’ strong will, determination, and unwillingness to submit to anyone, or anything.

Sacred Order 10

“The mystery religions were instituted in order to protect the marvels of the commonplace from those who would devalue them.”

                      {Peter Redgrove, “The Black Goddess and the Unseen Real”.}

Long ago, high up in the sky a rebel band of Angels existed, unhappy with their destiny. Instead of sitting pretty playing harps and twirling their fingers through their hair, they followed their leader, the bold Lucifer, and leaped down from the sky and into the river Styx where they still reside to this day, invulnerable to the world, and ready to play as they please . . .

Invoking the rebel spirit is one of the things we do best here at The Eye, and possessing oneself with the invulnerability of the River Styx will without a doubt work in your favor, no matter the circumstance. Who wants to be vulnerable anyway? Instead, own your destiny, and write a place in history for yourself.

We have explored the history of these sacred orders and secret societies and have been entranced by this tradition of rebellion. The deeper you begin to look, the deeper you can understand that we are in fact living in a {Rebel Society}.

+THE SACRED ORDER OF THE GOLDEN DAWN+ is about the invocation of this ‘Rebel’ Spirit, and the traditions of spreading this magical word, and the power imparted onto the individual, once freed from a life of waiting. The answers are all around us, and only the chosen shall see them.

sacred order 18

There is a warning, however, in summoning the ‘Rebel’ to pervade the soul: always remember that the ‘Rebel’ spirit doesn’t work for anyone, and once summoned, there is no guarantees how long they might want to stay, or the darkness they might uncover once you are shown the light.

Do you think you have what it takes to invoke the ‘Rebel’ spirit? If so, take a ride with   The Eye of Faith and lets aim for Styx!

E.O.F. Style Idol: Billy Idol {The ‘Idle’ Teen}

Billy+Idol

“A man is not idle because he is absorbed in thought. There is visible labor and there is an invisible labor. “

-Victor Hugo

New Wave just wouldn’t have been New Wave without this eccentric to pave the way through the 1980’s.  With a penchant for pastels, and bold black and white stripes, we thank this latest E.O.F. Style Idol inductee for being part of a fashion revolution for men, for being fearless, and for using that pelvis for the good of mankind.

We would like to introduce you to William Michael Albert Broad.

Having grown up in Stanmore, Middlesex, England, amidst the English countryside with a background in proper Boys Schools, this rebel rocker would boldly defy convention and using peroxide to pave his way, he would come to be know as the one and only Billy Idol.

As a boy, Billy’s family moved to southeastern London, where Idol attended Ravensbourne School for Boys. Billy also attended Worthing High School for Boys in West Sussex.

In October 1975, Idol went to Brighton Polytechnic to pursue an English degree, and lived on campus (East Slope), but left just after Year One. Billy’s academic ambitions would be cut short, as there was definitely a change in the air…

The world was shifting and popular culture was rapidly changing; the squeaky boy bands of the past were begging for a make-over!  Raw unbridled sexuality would be exactly what the doctor would prescribe…

“If your world doesn’t allow you to dream, move to one where you can”

– Billy Idol

The name Billy Idol was inspired by a schoolteacher’s description of the young Broad as “idle” – a bit of a slacker, non-chalant, “too cool for school”, as they say.  But it was his music ambitions and talent for performance that showcased the young man as anything but idle.

The stage name was also a nod to the pop acts that came before him. Billy Idol looked to history, comparing himself to his own idols like Billy Fury and Elvis.

“We were saying the opposite to the Clash and the Pistols. They were singing ‘No Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones’, but we were honest about what we liked. The truth was, we were all building our music on the Beatles and the Stones”

He then went on to join the Bromley Contingent of Sex Pistols fans; a loose gang that traveled into town when the band played.  Billy could see similarities between himself and the motley punk troupe.  He had a hunger for performing, and Billy knew he had to make his mark as an entertainer.

billy idol like flynn

Billy first joined the punk rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees (before the band had decided on that name) in 1976, but soon quit and joined Chelsea in 1977 as a guitarist.

It wasn’t until Billy would step out from the background and take center stage as front man of Generation X that the act from across the pond would make a huge splash in international waters. This quickly ushered in the ‘second wave’ of British invasion acts during the MTV era in the 1980s.

“I love it when someone insults me. It means I don’t have to be nice anymore.”

-Billy Idol.

By 1982, Billy made a splash on the club charts as a solo artist.  The single “Dancing by Myself” hit the pop charts like a comet!  With a string of hits like “Rebel Yell”, “White Wedding”, and “Eyes without a Face”, as well as a hit cover of “Money Money”, Idol Fever hit America in a huge way.

With an electric look consisting of scantily clad chains and leather, with a gyrating pelvis and curling lip, only comparable to the King himself, Idol had the idol sex appeal like no other teenage dream, and successfully ruled the charts for over a decade.

Photo of Billy IdolIn 1990, Idol was involved in a serious motorbike accident that slowed down the shock rocker, and nearly cost him a leg.  He was also hit by a car when he ran a stop sign while riding home from the studio in Hollywood one night, requiring a steel rod to be placed in his leg.  Idol would go on to speak about this accident and credit it for completely changing his life.

Having spent years partying and crediting much time to white weddings, Idol didn’t want to waste anymore time.

billy idol idol

Due to the circumstance of the accident, Billy would have to pass on a movie role tailor made for the Prince of Peroxide.

Film director James Cameron had chosen Idol to play the T-1000 character in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and had drawn storyboards to resemble him.  Unable to perform major stunts, Idol was replaced by Robert Patrick.

And did you know?

Don’t You (Forget About Me)“, written by Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff, had originally written it with Billy Idol in mind, but the singer turned it down, leaving the song to Simple Minds, who made it a hit in 1985! The Breakfast Club would have been a very different film if the rebel-hearted singer had left his hand print on the flick.

Influencing youth to revolt to this day, bleaching one’s head peroxide blonde wouldn’t have the same impact if it weren’t for the one and only Billy Idol. And if you browse LOOKBOOK, or any other street style source, you will be finding kids rocking the edge just like Billy.

billy idol ziggy stardust

Wiktor Hansson as Billy Idol for Tush Magazine

Count on finding this rocker’s look mimiced in fashion magazines and on the backs of the style obsessed youth. Billy Idol is what every man fantasizes of being; a sexual being unrestricted by the bounds of society, a creature of vanity, insanity, and completely possessed by the spirit of rock n’ roll. He shows that it’s good to stand out from the crowd, and to be extraordinary.

With a touch of James Dean’s rebel ways, the natural class of Errol Flynn, and a wildly adventurous spirit, Billy keeps himself current to this very day, performing and touring the world over. We love this star  decked head to toe with crucifixes and chains, or wearing nothing at all. One thing is for certain,  he’ll always be our Teen Idol!

Don Draper Goes Medieval! Is Mad Men Don Draper’s “Inferno”?

Man Men - season 6 episoe 1 - don draper reading dantes inferno on the beach

Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost. . .

Those were the first words we hear Don Draper speak in the season 6 premier of AMC’s hit show, “Mad Men” which aired last night. Dante Alighieri’s legendary Medieval poem is not one’s expected choice to be reading on the beaches of Mauii, but for Don Draper it seems to have opened many questions of himself.

You could even point out that throughout the series, Don has endured through many of the nine circles of sin described in Dante’s “Inferno” (such as gluttony, lust, and sin), so to capture the man of perceived strength and self confidence bring alongside with him a poem about the author’s personal midlife crisis really speaks volumes. Don, however, doesn’t speak for another 10 minutes into the episode.

Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno” is a piece of Dante’s collection of poems known as “The Divine Comedy“. Written between 1308 and his death in 1321, the work is still seen as a pinnacle in literacy for mankind, and is still read today by students and scholars around the world. Split into three parts: Inferno, Purgatoria, and Paradiso; the story tells of the author’s descent into hell before ascending to paradise.

And as Don puts it, “Heaven is a little morbid. How do you get to heaven? Something terrible has to happen”.

As Dante had Virgil at his side, Don has Sterling; and like Dante’s muse Beatrice, Don seems to have found a new muse in his latest mistress who leant him the copy for his vacation. It’s strange life he is living, but luckily he notes he must stop “doing this”, before he never figures it out.

Dantes Purification on the Deserted Shore of Pergatory- The Divine COmedy - Dantes Inferno - Master of the Dominican Effigies (1325 - 1355) - AGO Revealing the Renaissance

We got a chance to see one of first illustrated copies of Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy” at the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Revealing the Early Renaissance: Secrets and Stories in Florentine Art, by The Master of the Dominican Effigies between 1325 and 1355. Today, it still one of the most important works written.

A season back, or so, Don criticized Universities as a “Medieval” system, in an almost dismissive way, so its interesting to see him now delving into the pinnacle of Medieval philosophy. I guess it’s always good to stay well-rounded. And 800 year old wisdom, is just as good as any.

One of the most famous publications of “The Divine Comedy” featured engravings by French artist Gustave Doré, offering fantastical and surreal visuals to compliment Dante’s classic words. We thought them a wonderful showcase to accompany Don Draper and his voyage of self-discovery, and maybe provide a little insight and intrigue into the world of Dante Alighieri.

Maybe we will go on one too. Anyone want to join us?

Everyone’s got a little figuring out to do.

Why not get lost a little on the way.

Until next time,
