We-go-together-like-the-winter

{source}

Here in Southern Ontario things are getting grimmer by the day. Not that we don’t like Winter – you know us boys love the comfort of a slouchy silk shirt or a easy breezy Hawaiian, but Old Man Winter just won’t stop peaking his nasty head out to remind us we’re on his turf!

So, we’ve put together an eclectic gallery of vintage fall/winter menswear inspiration that you can use to muse, since there’s no point of running!

Sometimes a little inspiration goes a long way . . .

Soak up the inspiration! Classic looks never die. We make them new by adding our own unique spirit, so don’t ever be afraid to add yours!

{STYLE WISE – SUMMER EDITION} Surf Dudes with Attitude!

EOF Vintage Menswear- Summer Style - 1930s Surf Buddies

While not all the gentlemen seen in this series have surf boards in their hands, they all undeniably possess that wicked spirit of the surf.

Spontaneous, effervescent, and wild like the waves, these are men of the past who have found sanctuary in the beauty of the ocean, and have used its energy to conjure an unbeatable swag, and undeniable attitude.

We love looking through what people wore, and especially with swimwear, not much has changed. Whether shorts or speedos, the look and style of these basics can still be found today.

And while we don’t wear the one-piece suits anymore, or have to swim with tank tops; these looks are more and more interesting and intriguing. There is some unique stuff there that just needs to come back (striped one-piece, graphic swim tanks) into play!

EOF Vintage Menswear- Summer Style - 1930s Graphic Tank - Cool Swimsuit Dude- Moustache EOF Vintage Menswear- Summer Style - 1930s Stripe Bathing Suit

Especially with today’s climate, always drifting back to the past for inspiration, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of these influences in the mix in coming years. If not, we’ll just have to take it on ourselves. Either way – it’s happening.

Check out the amazing pictures we’ve found for you all to get in the swing of Surf, and the attitude that makes it timeless beyond the bleached blonde hair and tubular moods we automatically associate with this lifestyle.

So what do you think? Have things changed that much? There’s no time value on fun in the sun, that’s for sure.

Share you favourite pics with your friends or post to  your own blog

and help showcase {vintage} summer style!!!

Hope you’re keeping cool.

It’s hot.

roxy music- immortal style idols

These guys are legends, and their music echoes like the voice of a lost memory. Dreams, and fantasy, illusion, and grandeur – these are all summoned by their music. Formed in 1971, Roxy Music lives on today as one of the most popular bands there have ever been, and were even honoured by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “Immortal” in a list of their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

We’d have to go ahead, and add them to our Best-Dressed Artists of All Time list with their wild nod to the past injected with the blinding buzz of Glam Rock England. We included a few pictures of these Idols, and were hoping the song be a great way to settle down into the night.

Music Minute: “Penumbra” by Bobby Beausoleil and the Freedom Orchestra

Bobby Beausoleil- Friends with Satan

Bobby Beausoleil- Vintage- Tattooed King

Bobby Beausoleil has a bit of a bad rep. Bad rep could be an understatement, but it’s true.

It never helps to be friends with Charles Manson, or get caught up in a war against society,  but its sad to have this overshadow some of his greater achievements, like music. It goes without saying that he was a rebel to the extreme; a hardcore bad boy, his music translates a certain genius that was erased by his life’s tragedies.

Bobby Beausoleil - Do What Thou Wylt

This is a track that was recorded for the Kenneth Anger film “Lucifer Rising” (Anger is also an E.O.F. Style Idol).

Entitled “Penumbra”, and composed by Beausoleil himself, the track was not used for the film, but can be heard today along with the Freedom Orchestra to create a magical and mystic ride to other places. It’s definitely something to jam to, and knowing how the darkness delights you, I’m sure you will find this one truly intrinsic.

Bobby Beausoleil appeared also appeared in Kenneth Anger’s magic short, “Invocation of My Demon Brother”, alongside Anger himself, and the notorious Anton LaVey – the founder and High Priest of the First Church of Satan, and a staple haunt of the entertainment industry in California during this time.

The Pompadour.

We’ve been seeing a lot of these, as of late, on our virtual style quests, and find this mythic hairstyle’s history absolutely fascinating. The hair-doe characterized by its voluminous waves and carefully coiffed height was first coined in the 18th Century after French aristocrat, Madame de Pompadour – the mistress of King Louis XV. EOF - Pomp and Circumstance- Gibson Girl The style was later revived in the later part of the 19th Century and onward through the First World War, and became synonymous with the “Gibson Girl” ideal of beauty popularized in this era. The do became a “Do” again, in vogue, as a much tighter version of it could be seen on Hollywood movie starlets of the ’40s like Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Bette Davis- Now, Voyager- Pomp and Circumstance EOF- Vintage Style Illustration- I like Your Hair, It Would Look Better on Me- Leather Warrior - Pomp and Circumstance However, it would be the 1950s that would totally turn the style around, and have the men sporting the look. Popularized by rock stars of the day like Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, and Billy Fury, as well as actors like James Dean.  The style was quickly taken up by youth culture and society’s outcasts to become a staple of counter culture style and individual beauty. The rest is history, as even today, hundreds of style obsessed and nostalgia driven guys (like ourself) pain away the day to get their hair high and enough waves to keep it up there. What do they say again? “The higher the hair, the closer to God”. In that case, we might be looking at the Tower of Babel of Hair with how popular the Pompadour is getting. MALEFICENT, MALEFICENT, MALEFICENT!!!

Maleficent

Maleficent has always been a character that has captured our imagination. Since childhood, the prima donna of Disney villains seemed to strike a creepy chord in a way that no other cartoon evil could.

It could have been her sultry voice provided by the insatiably listenable Eleanor Audley (check her out in all her non-animated glory below), or perhaps it’s the sheer imagery of that everlastingly long black cloak with those crazy twisted ram horns that make her the epitome of devilish delight to our child-like eyes.

Whatever it may be, there’s no denying the staying power of she. It’s been 55 years since Disney first released its vivid version of Sleeping Beauty based off of Charles Perrault’s La Belle Au Bois Dormant, and the Grimms Brothers’ Little Briar Rose, and in the spirit of regeneration the {past} has made its way to the {present} yet again in a epic retelling of the story as seen through the eyes of the maniacal maven herself. . .

Maleficent.

It’s a name that will be on everybody’s lips in a few short months with an early release in France & Italy on the 28th of May, and the rest of the world, including the US on the 30th. It’s months away, but we can’t stop drooling over the new trailers which are feast for the senses in themselves, showcasing Elle Fanning’s angelic beauty as the Princess Aurora, and the Queen herself, Angelina Jolie taking the screen as the iconic villainess.

It’s bound to be a huge hit, and much praise shall be given to the cast and crew for creating this movie magic marvel. . . there’s no doubting it. Plus, how can you go wrong with Angelina Jolie leading the whole thing?

What strikes me most is that the film being told through the point of view of Maleficent will no doubt shed some light on why she decided to become so damn mean. I think I kind of get it – I mean, she was totally shafted from attending Aurora’s birthday party. That IS pretty rude, don’t you think? I guess we will just have to wait for all the insight . . .

In the meantime, you will find us getting drunk on another amalgamation of the {past}, {present}, and {future} with Lana Del Rey’s sweeping take on 1959’s Sleeping Beauty’s original love theme “Once Upon a Dream” based off a theme from Tchaikovsky’s 1890 ballet. With the cooing of her Monroe-esque voice, there was no one more perfect to elevate this classic to a place that resonates today, and beyond . . .

Listen to it below!

Don’t you love that feeling? Of having dreamt the moment before it happens . . .

I get that feeling a lot these days.

STYLE {WISE} : Rebel Noir, and “Crime in the Streets” (1956)

eof style wise - vintage menswear supremo - crime in the streets 1956

This 1956 classic had movie star Sal Mineo playing a street wise gang member just a year after his Oscar nominated turn as a misunderstood teenager in the legendary “Rebel Without a Cause”.

The film also featured a young bad-ass John Cassavetes before he was pawning off Mia Farrow to Satan or directing his own killer films.

The look of the film is, what we like to call, Rebel Noir :

“Crime in the Streets” promised to tell “the whole story of the Rock’n’Roll generation”, which seemed to be on everybody’s mind. Who were these outcast teens in their washed denim pants, flashy sports coats, and slicked back hair? I’m sure somewhere deep down inside there’s a reason behind the madness.

The film plays better than one might expect, and is definitely a classic of the 1950s street gang film genre. Definitely a must see for real players of vintage style reincarnation. All the time. Anytime.
