Music Minute – “The Black Dog Runs at Night” from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)

From the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, which is directed by David Lynch and written by Lynch and Robert Engels , we bring you a small piece of the soundtrack, The Black Dog Runs at Night.

The iconic television series from the 90s, Twin Peaks, was cut short during it’s second season due to fleeting ratings.  Though not short of fanfare, this sequel/prequel film was released in 1992 to cap off  storyline established during the shows run.

Attempting to wrap up the story of the small lumbering town in the woods would prove to miss the mark by certain standards.  With several actors unwilling to reprise pivotal roles, and a mixed up story line consisting of flashbacks, and leaps ahead in time, mainstream audiences had trouble wrapping their heads around the movie at the time of it’s release.

But die hard fan’s of the franchise will tell you this film is not to be missed!  Not only was the show great during its run, but this retelling of key events in the series gave the Twin Peaks fan’s a taste of what they so craved; closure!

With Halloween in the air, we are cultivating a mood not only for ourselves, but for you our readership! Special thanks to domtakis for his comment on a previous story and bringing our attention to this one-off track from the movies soundtrack.

With effective lyrics by David Lynch himself, and music by Angelo Badalamenti,  we appreciate the cool and eerie tone of such a short piece. Like all of Lynch’s work, this really packs a punch! Devilishly effective, and all together quite creepy, we love this!

Music Minute: “We’re all Water”- Yoko Ono (1971-72)

This music minute was brought to our attention by one of our friends, and the second we heard Yoko Ono‘s iconic cry, we knew we had a Music Minute on our hands.  We love strong artistic women who aren’t afraid to speak their mind.  Queen of the Lucid Dream, the track “We’re all water” truly draws the conversation… what do we all have in common? The thread of mankind linking us all together is simple! We are all Water!! (duh.)

An amazing recording with great musicians, Stan Bronstein is the KILLER sax player, Tex Gabriel is the other guitarist, Gary Van Scyoc is the bassist and Adam Ippolito is the keyboardist with Rich Frank as the drummer.  Oh, and did we mention it was produced by Phil Spector . Give this melodic jubilee a listen, and tell us what you guys think of The  Queen of the Peace Movement and Music Scene, Yoko Ono.

Sharing a similar experimental flavour as B-52’s smash “Rock Lobster“. We have to say this track somehow takes it to the next level with comparisons between iconic pop idols, and political figures.  From Chairman Mao to Richard Nixon, not to mention a few name drops of Marilyn Munro, Raquel Welsh, Lenny Bruce, and the Queen of England, this experimental jam really knocks our socks off and get’s our toe’s tappin’ BIG TIME.

{STYLE WISE} – 1940s Metropolitan Treasure Hunters

On four summer days in August of 1949, treasure hunters from across the globe gathered for the auction of the estate of Robert Ripley, famous cartoonist and collector of rare oddities.

With over 80 million readers of his famous Believe it or Not! series, it was rumored Robert Ripley received more mail than the President of the United States of America.So when the chance to rummage through the eclectic collection of this eccentric media tycoon in a public auction came, the treasure seekers all made their way to New York City!

Many treasures were up for grabs, some mundane, but others wildly fascinating and strange. Only someone with a real {EYE} could truly appreciate some of these remarkably unusual treasures – medieval torture devices, caskets, knives, and shrunken heads!

Most of the pieces were purchased by John Arthur, an entrepreneur from New York City, who then opened the first permanent Ripley’s Believe it Or Not! Odditorium in San Fransisco, California.

This, however, did not stop the other wildly fascinating visitors who sought a chance to own something remarkable and rare from the collection. Each day was just as full as the last, and lucky for us, photographer Ralph Morse shot the auction’s comings and goings for LIFE Magazine.

We are delighted to share some of these previously unpublished photographs of the ties, smoke, and dapper gals and gents who turned up for a chance to win! Most of all, it goes to show a great suit or a fine pair of sunglasses are vital tools for any auction scenario. Scenarios in general, really.

Today, Ripley’s Believe it Or Not! is the fastest growing museum chain world-wide with destinations popping up all over the globe. The latest addition to the Ripley enterprise is going to be a 130,000 sq.ft. aquarium, featuring a 1, 500, 000 gallon tank of water-  making it one of North America’s largest, right here in Toronto!

The site will feature and breed endangered and rare exotic water life from around the Globe, and is set to open in 2013. {Visit the website for more details!}

Enjoy the vintage musings!

Sincerely,

{theEye}
