{MUSIC MINUTE} “ZODIACS” by Roberta Kelly

Well isn’t that just too totally up our alley . . . Ms. Robert Kelly sings “Zodiacs” a funky 1970s disco-era tune about our favourite astrological symbols; all performed in timelessly popping canary yellow!

Sorry Beyonce, but looks like Robert Kelly was rocking this shade of yellow far before the Queen B helped this colour take over the style scene; but that’s just the name of the game! If it was cool once, its gonna be cool forever – so, lest we forget:

{PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE} unite!

Hold up, they don’t love you like WE love you Roberta!

Thanks for giving us this joyous tune. Hope you enjoyed it, too…

{MUSIC MINUTE} “Bad and Boujee” x “September” Soul Train Mash-Up!

when you try to be some lavish bitch, but you know you’re not.

The {PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE} are always in beautiful syncopation with each other, and we’re not just talking style! Yes, there is a rising popularity in shopping and wearing vintage (HALLELUJAH!), and more and more high fashion designers are ripping from vintage styles- but we see this trend in movies and music, too!

Would a show like “Stranger Things” even be as popular if it weren’t set in the 80s? And we keep seeing an influx in nostalgia everywhere you go.

Give it up for Ric Wilson‘s ridiculously awesome mash-up of Migo’s hit song “Bad and Boujee” with Earth, Wind, & Fire’s iconic song “September” for a wicked funky take on this song that never ceases to make you want to put on a wicked outfit and look fly AF.

Take a listen!

We know it’s not everyone’s cup a’ tea, but you can’t deny how perfectly these two jams sync up – not to mention how awesome it is always to watch Soul Train dancers shred the dance floor.

So, in this spirit, we were inspired by both the “Bad and Boujee” video, as well as the funkedelic soul of the 1970s to bring you a few options to invoke the spirit!

DING DONG CHARLIE MANSON IS DEAD!

We’re not in Wonderland anymore Alice

-Charles Manson

Maybe we can all sleep a little more sound knowing that yesterday marked the passing of one of the world’s most notorious criminals – Charles Manson.

Infamous for bringing a dark turn to 1969’s Summer of Love co-ordinating a string of horrific murders in the Hollywood Hills of 7 highly influential and well-to-do victims including the heiress to the Folger coffee fortune, owners of a successful grocery chain, and iconic beauty – actress and model Sharon Tate.

You could say 8 victims total if you include that Tate was pregnant.

While he never committed any of the murders with his own hand – there is little doubt that his cult-like hold on his followers was so powerful that he was able to control and manipulate seemingly ordinary people to do some of the world’s most vicious atrocities using his strange magnetic quality, and the help of psychedelics like LSD.

{THROWBACK: “The Night Roger Sterling took LSD with Angela’s Mom from ‘My So Called Life’}

The three women also charged in the murders have all given chilling accounts of the murders, as well as the hold Charlie had over them.

{read Susan Atkin’s account of the murders from December 14, 1969}

And whilst Manson and his black witches were put away, they were spared the death penalty when it was deemed unconstitutional in California in 1972- Manson still garnered countless followers and fans who worshipped the man like a God. Most recently he was even engaged to a 20-something woman named Star, only later to call it off when it was revealed to him that their relationship was a ploy to acquire his body and set up a Lenin-esque tomb in Los Angeles after his death to make money.

All across the internet you can buy merch featuring his face and words, countless best-selling books about the man, his cult, and their crimes, successful feature films, and even an NBC series ‘Aquarius’ featuring the handsome Gethin Anthony as the cult-leader.

Most recently the popular FX series American Horror Story featured a scene in their latest season ‘CULT’ depicting Evan Peters telling his own followers about the legend of Charles Manson and the murders that incited his revolution. This episode aired only less than two weeks before his death, in a strange twist of fate with Peters also doubling as Manson, and series stars Sarah Paulson, Bilie Lourd, and Leslie Grossman as Susan “Sexy Sadie” Atkins, Linda Kasabian (granted immunity for her testimony at the trial), and Patricia Krenwinkle – California’s longest serving female prisoner.

Personally it felt a bit like a gross glamorization of a horrific act, and a bit of a gratuitous showcase of violence (which is very AHS these days), and the thought that these twisted fuckers could get any kind of glorification from something like this was disgusting.

We’ll post it here, and let you decide:

Then it was announced that Charles Manson was dead, and somehow it seemed like a door had been closed on all that, and maybe we can feel good that some strange twisted energy has been depleted from this world.

Or maybe, its only out there running rampant looking for its next conduit….either way:

Ding Dong Charles Manson is DEAD!

We collected some fascinating headlines from the murders and trials, and thought they made for a unique visual of the horror and terror these seemingly simple-minded and harmless people brought onto this world.

His legacy will live on for better or worse, and if there is one thing we can learn from Manson is that evil truly does exist in this world, and we can never underestimate its reach. He may have indeed incited some kind of wickedness when you consider all the messed up things that have begun to avalanche in our society.

Also, never underestimate a starving artist scorned!

From the world of darkness I did loose demons and devils in the power of scorpions to torment.
-Charles Manson

{MUSIC MINUTE} The Original “Stroll” circa. February 1958

“The Stroll” was a slow rock n roll dance popular into the mid to late 1950s embraced by cool teens across America. Classic concept: boys on one side, girls on the other – the paired up couples then strut their stuff down the line. A precursor to the iconic Soul Train Line … we can’t help feel something spooky watching these teens slowly glide down the line in one of the original “strolls” captured on television.

Getting major Lynch vibes here . . . not sure exactly what it is? Perhaps it’s their eerily slow movements, and often times, complete lack of expression. Maybe its the grainy quality of the video and wondering where exactly this was filmed – the atmosphere is so strange.

But most definitely the fact that all this is but mere memory, and who knows what became of these kids or where they are now…

We might never know.

But we’d love to know what you thought, so leave a comment below!

{MUSIC MINUTE} Burt Bacharach “Theme from The Blob”

Indescribable… indestructible…      insatiable…                                 It crawls…                                  It creeps…                                  It eats you alive!

The 1958 film “The Blob” might just be the pinnacle of classic 50s B-Movie awesomeness! Check it out for the sci-fi camp, the american nostalgia, and above-all the wicked vintage style inspiration in every moment of the film.

E.O.F. {STYLE IDOL} STEVE MCQUEEN actually made his feature film debut starring in this flick! His brooding blonde badass-ness is still a refreshing sight on the screen. Funny enough, the star was 27 at the time of filming but playing a 17 year old!

We were enraptured recently discovering that Burt Bacharach created the film’s charming happy-go-lucky theme song, and wanted to bring it to the forefront!

B-MOVIE Style is coming to the forefront (GUCCI’s A/W 17 Campaign by Glen Luchford for one thing) so stay on the look-out for more of this essential vintage inspiration!

bonus

Steve Mcqueen was offered $2,500 or 10% of profits for his role in “The Blob”.

Tragically he accepted the $2,500; the film would go on to make over $40 million!

{STYLE WISE} ANTONIONI’S “ZABRISKIE POINT” +BLOW IT UP!!!+

Our latest addition to the altar of E.O.F. {STYLE IDOLS & DIVINITIES) was the impossibly stunning Mark Frechette, whose stardom originates as the handsome hero of Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 counter-culture cult classic Zabriskie Point.

We thought it apropos to delve into the fantastic and fundamental stylish-ness of this poignant and severely under-rated film.

Whilst the flower power movement is mostly seen as Woodstock, flower children dancing in parks, peace, love, and rainbows – the counter-culture movement that began to arise from the horrors of the Vietnam War and injustices in America was also an aggressive and violent force ready for radical change.

Parties like The Weathermen, Baader Meinhoff, and the Black Panthers fought for revolutionary change from the capitalist bourgeoise regimes that still run the world to this day.

Much the way Antonioni’s fashionable masterpiece Blow-Up captured the Swinging London of the mid-60s in his chic docu-stylized manner, Zabriskie Point aimed to shed light on this particular moment in time.

The film even features a cameo by THE political power-force and activist Kathleen Cleaver (who is also very due to be inaugurated to the rank of E.O.F. DIVINITY}!

The turbulently good-looking Mark Ferchette plays Mark, an armed student radical on the run from the cops.

While flying an airplane over the desert he spots Daria Halprin who plays Daria, a gorgeous bohemian goddess who may or may not have a thing for wealthy older business execs, and they engage in an erotic (and dusty) desert orgy.

Whilst a desert orgy might seem like a tried and true climax for any film- the real climax drifts dreamily to Daria’s increasing discomfort and disgust over bourgeoise attempts to redevelop the gorgeous Mojave desert.

What follows this moment of realization is a fantastical finale that tells a thousand thoughts, statements, and poetic musings through the universality of cinema.

This final moment cannot be denied.

SPOILER ALERT!

{WATCH THE FINALE BELOW}

If you watched the clip, you can see why Zabriskie Point  is really fuelling our psych-rock summer.

Would have to recommend musing over the desert love scene, if you’re in the romantic mood . . .

And whether you’re in it to take in all the timelessly cool/counter-culture chic/boho American stylings of costume designer Ray Summers or the epic psych-rock soundtrack that features a theme song by Roy Orbison, and tracks by the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, The Youngbloods, Patti Page, and the ultimate Pink Floyd– this film is ICONIC in every right!!!

Interestingly, both of the films stars were non-actors who both appeared in exactly three films.

Mark Ferchette was a carpenter discovered during a loud argument on the streets of Boston where he allegedly threw a flower pot at a woman, while Daria Halprin was spotted by Antonioni in the Jack O’Connell documentary ‘Revolution‘ which profiled the counter-culture movement in San Francisco.

The two make for a beautiful All-American bohemian brunette couple, whose enigmatic bond is as mysterious as it is inspiring…

They gained the status of the first counter-culture couple, and actually maintained a real life romance, which later led to them getting a string of magazine covers, TV appearances, and even joining a cult together.

After all, a couple that joins a cult together stays together!

”It put me in a kind of lifestyle and situation that in many, many ways I wasn’t ready to deal with,”

-Daria Halprin

Halprin would later leave the Fort Hill Community that was founded by musician Mel Lyman, who was known as the Charles Manson o the East Coast,  while Ferchette was arrested for armed robbery and died in prison from a weightlifting accident joining the notorious Dead at 27 crew.

Whilst the film garnered lack lustre reviews at the time for its meandering plot and docu-surrealism which may have just been a little too ahead of its time.

{watch it now}

But, that’s what’s great about exploring the {PAST} you have the opportunity of looking at it through the lens of the {PRESENT} and hopefully keep the dialogue going into the {FUTURE}.

In a world as messed up today (if not more than)- a film like Zabriskie Point is a fearless reminder of the people who almost 50 years ago cried for change, the timelessness of true style, and the dreaminess of the desert . . .

Where did this courage and fight go in our day to day? Have we really been brainwashed to believe everything will be OK?

Sometimes it feels like you just might pull a Daria, too?

Talk about American beauty . . . do yourself a favour and watch this film!

{MUSIC MINUTE} “Woodstock” – Joni Mitchell

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
I’m going on down to Yasgur’s farm
I’m going to join in a rock ‘n’ roll band
I’m going to camp out on the land
I’m going to try an’ get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe it’s the time of man
I don’t know who l am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devil’s bargain
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Because the Sky is Blue it Makes Me Cry!!! ‘VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS’ TRAILER {Luc Besson, Supermodels, and Rihanna OH MY!}

Luc Besson,
Supermodels,
and Rihanna
OH MY!

In case you didn’t know, trailers have been dropping for Luc Besson‘s latest visual masterpiece “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” which stars burgeoning stars Dean DaHanne and the supermodel who continues to break the mould (as well as continually be a major bad ass)- Ms. Cara Delevingne.

Based on the French comic series first published in 1967 and reappearing again in 2010, Valérian and Laureline ; the trailer is full of astounding moments that dazzle the eyes (that PALETTE, though?!) and are all the more amplified by the surge of emotions provided by the addition of the very first original recording by the Beatles to ever appear in a movie trailer!

Sounds like a big feat, but apparently all it took was for Luc Besson to ask Paul McCartney himself.

I just asked! We reached out to Paul McCartney, and he asked, ‘What is the film?’ and then he said yes! I never met him – I wish I could, to thank him. From what I heard, he’s seen a couple of my films…There is a vibe that I think, from what I heard, made him say, ‘For this one, because it’s at least new and fresh.’ So I think that he likes that. He likes to be part of something new.” {source}

While the French director certainly isn’t a stranger to the genre of science fiction, count on today’s advances in technology breaking the walls down for true aesthetic mastery, much the same way he did years ago with the stellar 90s masterpiece “THE FIFTH ELEMENT“!

I mean, who can forget that DIVA MOMENT!!!

OH, and have you spotted HER yet?

According to most conspiracy websites, the Queen of Witches herself: RI RI , GOOD GIRL GONE BAD , MISS SUNSHINE . . . RIHANNA where you at?

Well, if you’re asking yourself that question, here’s the second teaser to drop this week to get another look!

Alright, if you haven’t spotted it yet, lets post our own little teaser below, just because . . .

+SORRY NOT SORRY+

Music Minute: Krzysztof Komeda “Rosemary’s Baby Interlude”

Rosemarys-Baby-p01

Setting Up For Stan- Rosemary's Baby- Scream

“A chance to sit quietly and find out who you are; where you’ve been and where you’re going.”

-Ira Levin, Rosemary’s Baby

{published in 1967}

I called this an interlude because of its sauntering sweet nature between the high stakes and drama that is”Rosemary’s Baby”.

Polanski’s iconic film had many claiming he had beckoned the murder of his glamorous superstar wife, Sharon Tate just months following the film’s release, with this chilling tale of a wife sold to a coven of witches to give birth to the child of Satan!

The track is featured in a montage of Rosemary’s gleefully completing the contemporary turn-over of her new apartment (just before receiving a visit from her eccentric neighbour, Minnie).

The myth of the curse on the film was further perpetuated when John Lennon was murdered just outside the historic and now notorious Dakota building (below) just across the street from Central Park in New York City.

Seting Up For Satan- Rosemary's Baby-The Dakota

in·ter·lude

noun \ˈin-tər-ˌlüd\

3. a musical composition inserted between the parts of a longer composition, a drama, or a religious service

So enjoy this brief interlude, and sail away with this new vintage classic. . .
