+ 90S THROWBACK to HEROINE CHIC +

4c6b0-1990s-heroin-chic-l-hqhimw

Photograph by Davide Sorrenti

There probably isn’t an aesthetic that struck a chord so controversial in fashion as the notorious 90s inclination towards the new look: Heroine Chic. We are starting to see a bit of a return to this vibe in some of the world’s most prestigious runways, not surprising as the 90s is taking the 21st century by storm these days.

According to Wikipedia, heroine chic is defined as:

a look popularized in mid-1990s fashion and characterized by pale skindark circles underneath the eyes and angular bone structure. The look, characterised by emaciated features and androgyny, was a reaction against the “healthy” and vibrant look of models such as Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer

We found this throwback video of a 1997 episode of Fashion Television (I miss you!) on the death of fashion wunderkind Davide Sorrenti who had been one of the industry’s top photographers for this new look.

Taking photos of his friends in New york City inspired by the images of Larry Clarke and Nan Goldin, and coming from a lineage of art/fashion, he quickly became the go-to for this latest look until his untimely death at only 20 years old from . . . you guessed it!

HEROINE! (Not doing very well for the cause . . . )

According to top 90s fashion photographer Corrine Day  (who is often attributed with the rise of Kate Moss to iconic model status and poster child of this new look) in a 1997 interview for Vogue:

“We were poking fun at fashion” – Corinne Day, 1997

Out of the 80s which was all about glam and excess, Corrine Day in particular, stripped down her editorials to the basics, and instead of big butts, red lips, exaggerated bosoms, and endless hair; she chose young nymph-like beauties with a more natural essence and a bit of grit for a more realistic aesthetic that was really a rejection of the then standard of beauty.

It’s hard to get the joke when you use the words ‘Heroine’ and  ‘Chic’ together, and then you think of the deaths of so many talented young people (first supermodel Gia Carangi, actor and E.O.F. Style Idol, River Phoenix, rock star Kurt Cobain, and of course, ‘heroine chic’ proprietor Davide Sorrenti) during this time, making it impossible to reject the realities that this truly was a problem in the industry. However, I think it is a shame to bash the entire industry and pigeon hole this aesthetic and its creators and muses as – EVIL.

After all, in the end – they are images. You take them as you do, and thats that.

“Is Heroine Chic even real?”

That’s a brilliant question Jeanne Beker asks in this clip, and its what I kept asking myself as I watched it. After all, even Bill Clinton had something to say about this trend and its abuse on younger generations who could be susceptible to the cool factor of the fashion industry essentially embracing drugs.

However, it wasn’t the photographers or models or industry people coining the phrase, it was simply a term coined by the media which quickly turned into a frenzy – on the verge of a witch hunt.

There will always be that push against changing times, and interestingly enough today we are seeing the shift realized towards more “full” sized women in the mainstream of the industry. But, in the end, what does that prove?

It is always important to push healthy body image, but honestly, some of these girls (and boys, too) cannot help being that thin, so I always find it unfair this constant scrutiny on body types. Perhaps, the less we made an issue of either end of the scale, there wouldn’t have to be a problem at all.

The truth is we don’t want to accept each other for what we are, which is absolute crime.

In the end, I guess this clip posted initially by Dazed & Confused Magazine really just got me thinking, and would definitely have me thinking for a while.  There’s no denying this controversial era absolutely broke down walls in the realm of fashion imagery, and brought a rebellion to the forefront that continues to this day.

Nobody is perfect, and that’s what I think this era really tried to capitalize on in the simplest way.

Milla Jovovich interviews at Fashion Out Loud circa. 1996 ft. Davide Sorrenti

The elusive world of fashion will probably always have some sort of bad rep, and that’s fine.

But don’t be silly enough to only look at the surface.

Try to dig deeper in all aspects of life.

Until next time,

The Eye of Faith Presents +Hollywood Babylon+ September 12, 2015 @ 3pm SUPERCRAWL 2015

hollywood babylon large

It’s almost that time of year again! Supercrawl is going to take over the streets for three days of music, fashion, art, and FUN. Last year was a blast, and we’re so excited to announce that we will be taking over the Supercrawl Fashion Tent not once, but TWICE this year.

We will be debuting +HOLLYWOOD BABYLON+, our first contemporary collection on Saturday September 12 at 3pm in the Supercrawl Fashion Zone Tent, so mark your calendars and save the day. If you will be around and would like VIP seats to our show give us an email at the.eye.of.faith@gmail.com!

Our collection was inspired by the decadence and decay of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Combining a street chic attitude with the textures and ease of 1930s/40s leisurewear; looks range from a Hollywood starlet enjoying an afternoon cocktail by the pool to dangerous ingenues in metallic evening gowns that put a meaning to “if looks could kill…”

It’s a bit of a departure for us, especially if you have been following our side since the beginning, but we felt this foray into womenswear would be the perfect breath of fresh air for us, as well as a chance to stretch our creative muscles in a totally new ‘fashion’.

Our biggest pull to this collection was in fact Veda Pierce, the sophisticated, driven, and treacherous daughter of Mildred Pierce in the classic neo-noir “Mildred Pierce”. Here is a girl who is striving to be ahead of the norm, worldly and too classy for her own good.

She’s not afraid to do anything to get what she wants in life, and on top of it all she is devastatingly gorgeous and talented to boot. Perhaps a little too dangerous and manipulative for most people’s liking, but she definitely helped spawn our imagination when setting out on this unique opportunity to showcase what we are all about….summoning the {PAST} into the {PRESENT} to help shape the {FUTURE}….

It’s going to be a stellar show, and much blood, sweat, and tears have gone into putting our best foot forward in what can only be described as a bold new chapter in our fashion careers, so don’t miss out! If you’ve noticed that we haven’t been posting too much on our blog this summer- this is why!

Our second show will be on Sunday September 13 in the Supercrawl Fashion Zone Tent from 3p-5p and will be an epic spectacle of vintage fashion aptly named The Eye of Faith Presents A Vintage Showcase!!! That’s right folks, we will be curating a two hour long fashion show featuring nothing but vintage head to toe, and will be taking audiences on a ride through time and into the +BEYOND+!!!

We will definitely be posting updates as they come so make sure to FOLLOW US on INSTAGRAM  and TWITTER (@theeyeoffaith) or LIKE US on FACEBOOOK (/theeyeoffaithvintage) to stay informed on all the exciting things we’re up to these days.

I’m pleased to announce that we will be partnering up with Vintage Soul Geek to create this epic showcase of vintage glory, and will also start carrying some select pieces of our collection in their shop come September so watch out!!! More on that soon…but in the meantime, check out our inspiration mood boards for The Eye of Faith Presents a Vintage Showcase!!!!

Can’t wait to start getting back in the swing of things.

Anita Pallenberg: E.O.F. Divinity.

The Hollywood Actress may come and go; whether or not she leaves behind a handful of memorable performances, a Style Maven is iconic, and we see reflections of their taste decades after they’re gone. Beauty, class, and 1 of a kind style sensibility we find in Anita Pallenberg.

“I’d wear that [second-hand red fox fur coat] to modelling jobs with just my underwear, boots and a bag because you couldn’t leave your clothes lying around. The other models would steal them!” Anita Pallenberg

A model in the early 60s, Anita made her way into movies and rock and roll. Starring in such cult favourites as Barbarella, Performance, and Candy. We love her spin as the great tyrant in Barbarella, where her voice is dubbed yet her appeal cuts through the screen. This exotic alien villian is the perfect yin to Jane Fonda’s yang in the 1968 cult classic.

Style maven Anita Pallenberg’s influence over The Rolling Stones is clear. Being the mother of rock n’roller Keith Richards first 3 children, the two were never married. But, her influence during the Rolling Stones establishing days are evident up to this very day. Not only did she find partnership with Richards, but Pallenberg once courted the late founding member of the Stones, Brian Jones. Perhaps these men rubbed off on her, but we feel this gal held her own amongst these men. She charmed and captivated the boys and the world for years.

Whether yesterday or tomorrow we know the ‘look’ and ‘vibe’ of Anita Pallenberg will be appreciated forever, because an idols like this doesn’t come around just every day.

Sincerely,

+STYLE STAR+ El Principe Gitano, JJ Reyes !

style star jj reyes 3

The stars in the sky will shine bright tonight knowing that we pay tribute to one of their brightest young consorts. As we are always expressing here at The Eye of Faith, style is about the attitude, and bringing a truly individual edge that will set you apart from the rest, and the +STYLE STAR+ we have chosen this week invokes all these attributes and more.

JJ Reyes is a talented style savant from Seville, Spain, showcasing his passion for things fashion on his personal style blog El Principe Gitano. On top of JJ’s ultra rad and sophisticated take on style, his site is a beautiful escape to some of Spain’s most iconic and beautiful landmarks.

This handsome Gypsy Prince took the time to let us pick his brain on his unique style, the things he loves most, and the future seen through his most exceptional and unique eye!

style star jj reyes 4

First, a bit of an introduction to yourself. What is your name, and what do you do?

My name is JJ Reyes, I am studying Advertising & PR in Seville (Spain), where I live. I have a fashion blog titled ‘The Gypsy Prince’ (http://www.elprincipegitano.com) that I opened a year ago. It has more than 50.000 visits, with the intention of sharing a virtual space to show my ambitions, concerns, places, pleasures and even the people who usually are next to me.

I am in love with everything about fashion and trends, a passion I show weekly on the blog through my different looks. I am also working as a DJ and model.

What would be your earliest fashion memory, and has it played a part in leading you to your fashion future?

I don’t think I will ever give an answer to this question, since I have no clear memory of fashion in my childhood. However, I can assure you it wasn’t until 14 years old when I began to focus my attention on fashion, which led me to an evident change of style in my early teen years.

style star jj reyes 8

style star jj reyes 9

When you wake up in the morning, what thoughts go through your mind while picking out your outfit for the day?

I always have in mind a specific garment that I want to wear, just that one. The other garments that go with it appears in my mind while I am standing in front of the closet. Obviously, the weather is an important element when I am choosing what I’m going to wear.

style star jj reyes 10

style star jj reyes 6

Do you have any go-to inspirations or style idols you look up to in your own style?

I don’t. I just want to have something from these three groups: 90s, Bloggers and Disney. I want the camera equipment of Chiara Ferragni, I want Pocahontas’ black long hair and I also want to make love to 90’s Kate Moss and Johnny Depp couple. I really think that my own style is the mix of random elements that apparently have no sense together to create the perfect look.

What has been your most important lesson in life when it comes to your own personal brand of style?

Biggest lesson in fashion life is undoubtedly swimming at the middle. The best thing is to stay there, between austerity and excess.

style star jj reyes 11

style star jj reyes 7

Where are your favourite go-to spots to go for killer fashion and style?

I am a big fan of Spanish brand ZARA. It gets to you every single huge prèt-a-porter trend from the catwalk to their worldwide stores.

You’re walking down the street and stumble upon a time portal that will take you anywhere you want to go in the history of time. Where do you decide to take it, and why?

90s. I want to make love to Kate Moss and Johnny Deep couple.

Vintage 90s Johnny Depp and Kate Moss

Here’s a fun one. You’ve accidentally conjured up an angry spirit who won’t get the hell out of your closet. You want to call the cops, but you know they won’t believe you so you pull out your exorcism kit and go to work. What is the one thing you are hoping to save from your wardrobe?

Doc Martens boots, I can’t live without them.

style star jj reyes 5

style star jj reyes 2

What is the worst fashion advice you’ve ever heard or been given?

The worst fashion advice is when your friend is tired of shopping with you and put on her “It’s okay, it fits you well’’ face when you are trying some clothes, because all that she wants is you to buy those fucking jeans so she can leave the store.

Any thoughts of the future of mens fashion and/or fashion in general, through the eyes of J.J. ?

Skirts. A Texas conservative man wearing a Givenchy skirt, that could be a great accomplishment for men’s fashion industry in the future.

And wouldn’t that be a sight for sore eyes . . .

Thanks so much to JJ Reyes for taking the time to sit down with {theEye}, only at The Eye of Faith!

Fashion Feline. Vintage Vixen. Mystic Muse.

We celebrate all the independent states of Kate, who turned 39 today!

Amazing to see her beauty has not faded a bit since she first appeared on this iconic cover of THE FACE Magazine in 1990!

In fact, it is her unique beauty that stood apart then, and still stands apart to this very day, which is why she is already a legend at not even 40.

We expect this real life Wonder Woman will continue breaking ground for the next 39 years to come.

Kate_Moss-David_Sims

“You lie, in faith; for you are call’d plain Kate,
And bonny Kate and sometimes Kate the curst;
But Kate, the prettiest Kate in Christendom
Kate of Kate Hall, my super-dainty Kate,
For dainties are all Kates, and therefore, Kate,
Take this of me, Kate of my consolation;
Hearing thy mildness praised in every town,
Thy virtues spoke of, and thy beauty sounded,
Yet not so deeply as to thee belongs,
Myself am moved to woo thee for my wife.”

Kids on the Street, Kids on the Beat…Beat Kids! Beat Kids!

Kids these days, kids those days…it’s all the same! Somehow kids and teens have garnered quite the reputation as being completely out-of-control! But something in us says that we absolutely love it!

Anyone who knows The Eye of Faith knows that we’ve always had an affiliation with rebellion, and for us the plight of the angry teen is engrained into our folklore. We wanted to put together a style-wise post inspired by the kids who own the street. Big or small, guy or girl, these kids have a way to them that just can’t be beat.

These young guns all demonstrate the resonating power of appearance, and that if you’re looking for defense from the big bad world sometimes style can be your greatest weapon.

Who wants to be young forever, anyway? Don’t worry, it gets better.
