E.O.F. Snapshot of the Day {February 20, 2013} – James Dean’s ‘Life’ Mask {circa. 1955}

JAMES DEAN 1955 HAND PAINTED MASK - 1

We’ve learned there is a lot of crazy cool stuff on ETSY, but this one has to take the cake as the find (at least of the week)! Does he look familiar to you? He should. He’s a pretty steady regular here for us, at The Eye of Faith; after all, he is the one and only King of being bad, of embracing that rebel spirit and never letting go – JAMES DEAN.

That’s right, kids. This is a death mask of the true blue American icon, and idol of style for millions around the world, both during life and after death. Reminds me of the Elizabeth Taylor mask, Lanier Smith shared with us in the past, but this is, as I said – JAMES DEAN!!!

JAMES DEAN 1955 HAND PAINTED MASK - 2

Described here by the seller:

They were selling for $900 in California in 1955. That was quite a lot of money. Dean was beloved by many and right now still wildly popular among all generations. This mask was considered unusual because J. Leslie painted it, eyes and all by hand.

It is quite stunning and yes, these absolutely are James Deans features. They were made from the first mask created.

These are becoming much harder to find, it comes with a license plate that went with the plaster mask.

It states California-James Dean-1931-1955.

Incredible, huh ?! Sometimes you just have to take that search a little further, turn that corner to the next page, and bona fide gems like this are just waiting to say ‘Hey’ to their new owner.

At $395, it’s a little bit our of our league, and maybe a bit frivolous, but God I’d love to own it. As the seller also mentions:  “This is a must have for a true fan, it is as close as you are going to get to a dead man.

Perhaps that’s creepy, but at the risk that James Dean’s death mask will start talking mysteriously one night, I’d be willing to take those chances!

James Dean is our rebel icon. Live Fast. Die Young. And Always Look Your Best – Even in Death.

E.O.F. Style Divinity : Maila Nurmi AKA {VAMPIRA}

“Vampira is a kind of entity (and you can call her a woman though she is androgynous)  that survives in this world. I, Maila Nurmi, am not.”

-Maila Nurmi

This one is sure to petrify! If there is one woman who recognized the importance of standing out from the crowd, it’s Maila Nurmi [December 11, 1922 – January 10, 2008], or as most people would recognize her, the legendary Vampira.

Leaving Finland at the age of two, Maila would move with her family to the United States of America. After high school, she quickly gathered up her possessions and moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of the dream!

The blonde knock-out with razor-sharp cheek bones would soon be working with the likes of art legends Man Ray, Alberto Vargas, and Bernard of Hollywood. Then in 1951  upon attending the Bal Caribe Masquerade as Charles Addams’ cartoon character from The New Yorker, Morticia Addams, Maila would catch the attention of a local television executive searching for a new star.

On April 30, 1954 on KABC-TV at 11pm Dig Me Later, Vampira aired followed by The Vampira Show the very next night. From that night on, the legend of Vampira was in full swing inching its way up the time slots, and creating from scratch an entire sub genre of Horror-Hosts on television!

Unfortunately the series was cancelled in 1955, but Maila would retain her rights to the character she created. Maila would continue her fascinating career taking bit parts in several films as Vampira including “Sex Kittens Go To College”, “The Beat Generation”, and Ed Wood’s iconic “Plan 9 From Outer Space”.  She also shared a fascinating and close friendship with rebel icon James Dean.

Vampira is a rare character for its time. With her dark wit, and forbidden sex appeal, Maila became a one-woman crusade against the stereotypical portraits of women on television, and Vampira would more than help break the mould.

A combination of the Dark Queen from Snow White, Theda Bara, and Gloria Swanson’s menacing Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard, it was unlike anything the world had ever seen!!

However by the 1960s Maila Nurmi would no longer find herself the glamorous dark diva, and was instead filling her time installing laminate flooring and making custom hand-made jewelry for extra cash. I guess that’s just how it goes in Hollywood: the city of broken dreams.

Come 1981, Nurmi was called to KHJ-TV for a revival of the character she had created nearly 30 years prior. The station would go on to cast young actress Cassandra Petersen, who would create the spirited Elvira we all know and love. Nurmi would bring the case to court claiming Elvira infringed on Vampira’s “distinctive dark dress, horror movie props, and…special personality.”

Sadly Maila Nurmi passed in 2008 leaving behind her legacy for art, style, and above-all originality. In this fantastic interview with Time Magazine she explains the creation of her iconic alter-ego and how creating this facade would help battle her personal demons.

One thing’s for sure today: there will only be one Maila Nurmi. Perhaps it was just the times, but no horror-host does it with the same sense of danger, charisma, and worldly sophistication. This of course was all an act according to Maila, but you don’t get fired for upstaging Mae West for just standing there!

We’ve inserted a gallery of our most wickedly wonderful images we could find of our diety of the dark to enjoy! So please do!

This girl had something special: it was up to her to find it! So let this be a lesson to us all! Dreams come and go, but only you remain in the end. So always remember to stay true. You’ll only have yourself to thank in the end.

We’re feeling like a Vampira cocktail ourselves about now. So until next time!

Forever yours,

Vintage Red Carpet Romances: Brad Pitt + Gwyneth.

With the Academy Awards just later tonight, the world is buzzing to see the stars make their red carpet appearances. Jean Dujardin is sure to raise the bar on suaveness with his dapper European sensibilities, and everyone must be asking: WWRMW [What Will Rooney Mara Wear] ?!?!

Unwittingly we are all excited for the arrival of Hollywood’s most notorious couple: “BRANGELINA”. The stars have been together since 2005, after meeting on the set of the action-romantic-comedy “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. Pitt divorced “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston to be with Jolie, the Academy Award Winning Humanitarian Hollywood Sex Goddess, and we get that.

But, with so much hype over each and every appearance by the undeniably gorgeous couple, we couldn’t help but reminsece the days even before Pitt married the Friends star. We’re tlking pre-1997- when Pitt was a young Bad Boy engaged to a stunning young American ingenue: Gwyneth Paltrow.

Daughter of American director Bruce Paltrow, and famed theatre actress Blythe Danner- Gwyneth is the epitome of true american beauty. Together with Pitt, the couple exude nonchalant American cool, and ultimate Nineties Style. There seems to be a lot of fun happening, too.

Miss those days. It’s like youth on fire with these two. Their energy is obviously contagious between the two, and they really seem symbiotic to eachother . . . . most of the time, at least. All good thing must come to an end, and it’s always best to leave the relationship at a high, we get that.

Today the two seem very happy in their marriages. The couple called off their engagement in 1997, and never looked back. Brad Pitt is nominated this year for his performance in Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball”, and Gwyneth Paltrow…she shows up to stuff.

Keep your eyes open for the fashions of the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and keep your fingers crossed that the stars amp up their style senses (because we’re tired of everyone trying to look so perfect! Shake it up! ) Really wish we could be there!

Sincerely,

{theEye}
