Voyage of Discovery: Living “Barefoot in Paradise”

Known as the most beautiful restaurant on the beach at Wakiki, The Queen’s Surf was a highly popular restaurant and nightclub in Hawaii throughout the 1950s and 60s, gaining popularity as the yearnings for the mythologies of paradise became more and more prevalent in popular culture!

Tourists from all over flocked to The Queen’s Surf for the music, a tropical drink, amazing traditional Hawaiian food unlike anything served on the mainland, and most of all, the “Hula Cop” who entertained nightly at the famous Barefoot Bar.

The “Hula Cop” was none other than Sterling Mossman, a native Hawaiian who was famous for his wild double life; by day he acted as a Detective for the Honolulu Police Department, and by night would make the transformation to ultra suave and charming impresario and ambassador of Hawaiian culture at the Barefoot Bar.

The Mossmans have always had a special place in Hawaiian culture as a family dedicated to bringing their island’s traditions to the public forefront. In the 1920s, the Mossman family had owned and operated the “Lalani Hawaiian Village”; the first of its kind, an outdoor venue that displayed and sold traditional Hawaiian gifts and objects to tourists – it was closed with the outbreak of WWII.

The Queen’s Surf was a one-of-a-kind experience that is still remembered today for its Hollywood calibre entertainment (with Sterling Mossman doing much of the entertaining himself), and their fantastic full course traditional Luaus; held on the beach, they would definitely give tourists something to remember their trip by. A true taste and feel for life on the islands…

This visceral and enchanting experience, both luxurious and primitive, was something new, right on the brink alongside books, films, and TV Shows set against Hawaii’s lush landscape.

Excited to encapsulate on the growing curiosity and interest towards all things Hawaiian, Sterling Mossman was approached by friend and businessman Clarence Hara who seeked out Mossman to use the “Barefoot”  in the design of a new label of clothing dedicated to the Hawaiian life and style!

Decorating the walls of the Barefoot Bar were “Barefoot” symbols on signs, as well as wallpaper decorating the space. These “Barefoot” symbols became the signature for a new label inspired by Mossman, called “Barefoot in Paradise”…

“Barefoot in Paradise” was a brand known for it’s unique prints, high quality fabric, and attention to detail. It was everything you would expect from the brand that represented the “Hula Cop” – fun, fresh, dynamic, stylish, and most of all, tasteful.

In fact, Sterling Mossman (and his Barefoot Gang) would only continue to rise in popularity as novels like John Michener’s “Hawaii” became huge hits, and TV shows like the 1959 series Hawaiian Eye (based loosely on Sterling himself)  took the airwaves by storm!

Mossman would later appear in an episode of the series, as well as being featured in the pilot of Hawaii-Five O in 1968, in a set modeled after his famous bar.

Sadly, on December 31,  1969 the Queen’s Surf closed its doors, and in 1971, the historic building was demolished leaving only the memories of luaus past and legends of Hollywood glory. Over 700 people showed up for the chance to sit in the bar for one last time, and the chance to rub shoulders with a star.

Go Barefoot, as the brand is called today, still exists sans the actual “Barefoot” logo that had given birth to the brand. In the 1970s “Barefoot” sold their logo to the iconic surf brand Hang Ten, and carried on with producing Hawaiian shirts – but something was different. Somehow, it was just not the same.

Today, there are those who still reminisce about the good ole days at the Queen’s Surf. Perhaps you have your own stories. We’d love to hear them if you do. For more information, TikiCentral has been a great resource in learning more about these legends and contains tons of information on other pop culture tidbits regarding Tiki and Polynesian culture!

At the Eye of we are proud to include an amazing piece from the genesis of the “Barefoot in Paradise” brand. This rare shirt is an early example of the brand’s commitment to quality and material, as well as their daring approach to graphics and design.

The shirt features a menagerie of motifs dedicated to the concept of voyage and discovery; no doubt an ode to the many voyagers who made their way to the islands of Hawaii, turning it into the bright and culturally diverse haven it is today.

A piece of history that explains history in a fun and exciting way! You definitely do not see that very often.

All this history makes me thirsty for a Zombie, though!

Hope we capitalized on a few interesting points…

Part of the fun with vintage clothes is the stories behind them, so we are more than pleased to give you the upper hand when it comes to finding something {amazing}!

Thanks a lot for reading! Hope we got you smelling those fresh cut pineapples and cool ocean breeze for the rest of the day! If you have any questions or stories, email the.eye.of.faith@gmail.com

E.O.F. Snapshot of the Day {February 20, 2013} – James Dean’s ‘Life’ Mask {circa. 1955}

JAMES DEAN 1955 HAND PAINTED MASK - 1

We’ve learned there is a lot of crazy cool stuff on ETSY, but this one has to take the cake as the find (at least of the week)! Does he look familiar to you? He should. He’s a pretty steady regular here for us, at The Eye of Faith; after all, he is the one and only King of being bad, of embracing that rebel spirit and never letting go – JAMES DEAN.

That’s right, kids. This is a death mask of the true blue American icon, and idol of style for millions around the world, both during life and after death. Reminds me of the Elizabeth Taylor mask, Lanier Smith shared with us in the past, but this is, as I said – JAMES DEAN!!!

JAMES DEAN 1955 HAND PAINTED MASK - 2

Described here by the seller:

They were selling for $900 in California in 1955. That was quite a lot of money. Dean was beloved by many and right now still wildly popular among all generations. This mask was considered unusual because J. Leslie painted it, eyes and all by hand.

It is quite stunning and yes, these absolutely are James Deans features. They were made from the first mask created.

These are becoming much harder to find, it comes with a license plate that went with the plaster mask.

It states California-James Dean-1931-1955.

Incredible, huh ?! Sometimes you just have to take that search a little further, turn that corner to the next page, and bona fide gems like this are just waiting to say ‘Hey’ to their new owner.

At $395, it’s a little bit our of our league, and maybe a bit frivolous, but God I’d love to own it. As the seller also mentions:  “This is a must have for a true fan, it is as close as you are going to get to a dead man.

Perhaps that’s creepy, but at the risk that James Dean’s death mask will start talking mysteriously one night, I’d be willing to take those chances!

James Dean is our rebel icon. Live Fast. Die Young. And Always Look Your Best – Even in Death.

+21 SWEATERS+ from THE EYE OF FAITH

Lucky number 21, it seems…

Do you have what it takes to make it through those long, cold, fall, and winter months? It may be all sunshine now, but you know that it is coming. I can hear it’s whisper just softly over the wrestling hum of the passing trains…

There aren’t many lucky people out there who can decide their own fate. I’ll take it that you are a lucky one who can…

The mall may me overflowing with stock, but something deep inside of you can’t commit spending another hour roaming its glass walls and shiny floors. Nothing seems to stand out anymore. You think you might need a coffee. Try to commit once more, and no, you’re back to the beginning again.

That combative force is trying to tell you to be free. Believe in me, you have to be free.

Now, in honor of the Fall we have permitted 21 new looks to our collection of stuff in the {SHOP}. What better for the months ahead, than to have for yourself the perfect sweater. A truly versatile article of fashion clothing. If you’re smart about it, a good sweater is something that can truly last a lifetime. If you haven’t been truly concentrating, you might trick yourself to buying a piece that isn’t ready to last even a year.

It’s one of those things, but we were committed to not only find some select pieces which stand the test of time for their inherent style, but also ones that have shown they have held up over the many years with hardly a trace of wear. Guaranteed if it has lasted between 30-60 years, it is most likely going to last another.

If you’re like us, you believe a great stand out sweater can really make an impact, and it’s important to have a lot of them. You can dress them up with a pair of nice pants, or be really casual in jeans…you can layer shirts underneath them, heck, you can even layer knits on top of each other! The combinations really are endless….

There’s a fascinating article about knits for men at Clothesonfilm. Check it out to learn more about the history of knitwear, and how sweaters were used to create the perfect anti hero of Tom Hardy for the film “Lawless“. (click here)

And ladies, don’t be shy either! A sweater is a sweater. If you like it – go for it! Go big or go home.

Speaking of going big, we naturally don’t expect you to have to go over the top with your budget when it comes to looking good. That’s the great thing about vintage! You can really find some great things out there – best part is we make it easy to look good and save. Each sweater ranges in price from $24 – $60.

We’re also running a promo for 25% OFF ALL SWEATERS until the 10th of October. So best check out the ones you like now, because who knows where it might be going. Use code SRETAEWS when you’re ready to CHECK OUT!

So whether you want one or them all, we definitely believe we have +21 SWEATERS+ that really say F%#^$@ ! It all comes back to what we were saying with having choice. You make yours.

E.O.F. Approved: 1800s Adirondack Black Bear and Brown Buffalo Coat

Searching the ‘cyberworld’ for great vintage finds is not always an easy task.   In an over-saturated industry it takes a lot of time to weed out the gems from the stones.   But we’ve stumbled upon a great site with some choice vintage menswear pieces as well as womenswear.   Today, we wish to draw attention to Time Warp – Vintage, and this amazing coat of  black bear fur and brown buffalo cuffs and collar from the Adirondack Mountains.

According to Timewarp; “THE LODGES IN THE ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS BECAME POPULAR AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR THE CITY DWELLERS IN ABOUT 1860, AND IT WAS VERY WILD AND RURAL TO THEM. TO GET THERE, THE PEOPLE HAD TO TAKE A TRAIN AS FAR AS IT WOULD GO, AND THEN A HORSE DRAWN BUGGY OR CARRIAGE WOULD PICK THEM UP AND TAKE THEM THE REST OF THE WAY. SOME TRIPS WERE 10 MILES OR SO WHICH MIGHT TAKE A GOOD 2 HOURS. THIS COAT BELONGED TO THE LODGE AND WAS GIVEN TO MEN TO WEAR IN THE CARRIAGE ON THE COLD COLD TRIP UP THE MOUNTAIN.”

This is the type of hide we’d like to have in our possession for a potential new ice-age!  Perhaps one hundred or two hundred dollars out of our price-range, we can still appreciate the beauty and structure of such a historic hide!

Sincerely,
