Dandy “Dracula” [an Ode to Ishioka]

“They say you are a man of good… taste. “

-Dracula, Bram Stoker’s Dracula

As fore mentioned in our last post, we are developing quite the affinity for a certain dreamboat of the dark side, and it seems like more and more of the masses have also come under the dandy wrath of Dracula.

With the passing of ultra-talented and internationally acclaimed costume designer Eiko Ishioka (passed on January 21 at the age of 73), we are finding our world more and more drenched with the dark nightmares and dreamscapes her fantasies conjured in designing for Coppola’s visionary 1991 film, Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

A nightmare fantasy realm of dark mystery, elaborate exoticism, blood, seduction, and intrigue which would not have been the same without the remarkable talents of Ishioka who would go on to win the 1992 Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

While her spirit will be missed, the designs she created are of constant value, for they provide much inspiration and insight into reinvention, and taking the reigns on one’s image. Choose a jump point, and really explore it.

That’s what we’ve been up to. Since we’ve been in this dark mode, and with Dracula on the brain, we pulled some pictures to explore OUR take on the Prince of Darkness explored in true E.O.F. style.

DEDICATED TO EIKO ISHIOKA [ R.I.P. 1938 – 2012 ]

Sincerely,

– The Eye x

I was just wearing a hat…Some people like it and some people are like ‘what is that?’ At the end of the day I feel good if I’m expressing myself.

His infamous Grammy hat auctioned to Arby’s for $44,000 (to charity), and has instilled the power it takes, and the power that comes from adorning your crown with an impeccable piece of headwear that lets everyone know what you are talking about.

What we are talking about are HATS! Hats. Hats. Hats. Can’t get enough of them these days . . . it seems that we as a whole haven’t been able to get enough of them those days, either. We’ve scoured the past for some of our favourite vintage style inspirations when it comes to the art of wearing a hat!!

Commercial Break: Dracula’s Daughter (1936)

More sensational than her father! Starring Gloria Holden, this is Dracula’s Daughter! Ostensibly based on a short story titled “Dracula’s Guest” by Bram Stoker,  this film was even mentioned in Anne Rice’s novel The Queen of the Damned.

Dracula’s Daughter may not have been successful upon its original release but it garnered cult status over the decades for being such a stand out film.  Modern critics have noted the strong lesbian overtones of the film, overtones that Universal acknowledged from the start of filming and which they apparently exploited in some early advertising.

EOF Approved: Brand New “Dracula” Shades

Check out these amazing specimen of a spectacle we were able to pick up recently! Aren’t they a blast?!

Currently foreseeing hundreds of days of pleasure and riot had in these cool new specs. Definitely digging a sort of Bram Stoker’s Dracula meets Something Wicked This Way Comes carnival creepshow kind of vibe with these ones.

Thought this would be a good opportunity to show off the iwickedly peculiar MAGICA SEXUALIS we just happened to stumble upon. A very exciting and rare addition to our dark collection. The book documents the many strange and fascinating sexual practices that have been attributed to magic and witchcraft (Not a bad subject to brush up on…).

We are very lucky to own a first edition of the book printed in 1934, featuring some immaculate cover illustrations designed by Aubrey Beardsley. They don’t make them like they used to, is for sure.

So, it’s looking like this one is a real two-for. Started you off with one thing, and then you got two. Forgot to show the best part of our brand new bad boys, though!

They do THAT! Bet you didn’t see that one coming…or you did. Either way, gotta love them. A serious pair of shades is a must, especially if you need your talisman to work without anyone seeing!

Wish I had one for everyone, but I think these ones are going to have to be serious keepers.

Till next time,
