{MUSIC MINUTE} “Blood and Honey” by Amanda Lear

So, lately we’ve been obsessed with the decadence and glamour of the 1970s disco scene, especially in Europe! And when we found this video by avant-garde superstar Amanda Lear, we found it to be the perfect combination of vintage awesomeness and spooky elegance!!!

We didn’t know very much about this divinity (don’t worry…we will be working on giving her an honored place on our altar of Style Idols & Divinities), but we have been delving into this marvelous woman’s life like no one’s business!

Here is a woman who hobnobbed with The Beatles, David Bowie, Brian Jones, Bryan Ferry, Andy Warhol…had the model looks of Verushka and the voice of Marlene Dietrich. Not only that, she was a close confidante to THE Salvador Dali, and remained one of his closest friends and muses until his death. She even closed Jean Paul Gaultier’s 1980s pop music muses collection back in 2013!

What is so wonderful about Amanda is her mystery . . . sometimes things are best left to the imagination, and Lear keeps this enigmatic quality to this day (her birth date and nationality is still unclear, as well as other rumors circulating)!

This is what we respect most of this bad ass woman! Just be yourself, and everything else will fall into place.

Until we meet again,

{MUSIC MINUTE} “GIGI IN PARADISCO” by +DALIDA+

Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti ( 17 January 1933 – 3 May 1987) better known as Dalida (داليدا‎)

+Before Beyonce there was Dalida.+

This exotic beauty of Italian descent and born in Cairo, Egypt rose to international fame throughout the 1960s and all the way to her suicide in the 1980s. A suicide over a broken heart only days after appearing in television interviews perfectly normal…love was her worst enemy in life.

She sold upwards of 140 million albums; Beyonce has sold 17 million solo, and 17 million with Destiny’s Child which really puts it into perspective (although, our girl Rihanna has sold upwards of 230 million records, so . . . ).

Special thanks to +THE ULTIMATE FASHION HISTORY+ Channel and its fabulous curator Amanda Halley for introducing us to this dazzling Diva. I’m sure we will focus on her again in future posts! The more you dive into her memory, the  more incredible she becomes.

There was actually a biopic released in 2017 about her which we are dying to see! Check out the trailer here.

This is a wonderful disco extravaganza from 1979-1980 (?) entitled “GIGI IN PARADISCO”. It’s a total odyssey of 1970s crazy euro party glamour!

+ FAVOURITE FIND + VIVA MAGAZINE {circa. January 1976}

VIVA MAGAINE: The International Woman’s Magazine {circa. January 1977}

Cover Photograph by the iconic HELMUT NEWTON (hence, the undoubtable chic-ness of this image).  Published by icons Bob Guccione and Kathy Keeton of PENTHOUSE fame, this is a prime piece of classic porn chic.

First coined in a highly influential New York Times article in 1973, porno chic describes a distinct period between 1969 and 1984 where American pornos were hitting the mainstream consciousness and pocketbooks hardcore. Andy Warhol kicked it off in 69 with Blue Movie, and films like Deep Throat, Behind the Green Door, Caligula, The Opening of Misty Beehtoven, A Night at the Adonis, and Flesh Gordon are among the films that encapsulate the Golden Age of Porn.

But it wasn’t just about the films. This period also saw a surge of amazing publishing prowess seen by magazines like PLAYBOY, HUSTLER, OUI, and of course PENTHOUSE dominated the scene, but for the first time publishers turned their attention to the female gaze, and offered pleasures like PLAYGIRL and VIVA with the male form objectified freely and openly to ease the tensions of the day.

I know it seems cliche to say, but its about the articles, too! Especially adult magazines of this period, you will find some powerful political, cultural, and historical content that just can’t be beat! Some of the articles included in this VIVA Magazine include:

The Blue Angel: Inside New York’s Naughtiest Night Club
Minnie Riperton Raps About Fashion
The Real Brenda Vaccaro
The Naked Cowboy
Dustin Hoffman & Robert Redford on set of “All the President’s Men”
Do You Have What It Takes to Be Happy?

Not going to lie; what really stood out to us was the top story on the cover: HOW TO MAKE LOVE LIKE A WITCH!

The things they targeted their demographics with back in these times is fantastic! Imagine if they had published topics like this today?? People would have a fit! But, seriously we need more of this!

That’s just what makes this piece so god damn amusing. Keep pieces like this for entertaining treats for your guests- some pop culture, history, and a little eye candy.

They don’t make them like they used to …

And I always get a kick with cigarette ads from this period. They are always so special and great. Like this one:

Just out in the park picking flowers and placing them in my pretty flower basket and smoking a cigarette. . .

+LADY BE COOL+

I don’t know how things have taken such a drastic turn. It’s rather sad, really…but luckily, we do have pieces like this to remind us of these lost times.

This is a rare item especially considering the super sensual and chic Helmut Newton cover, and VIVA being of lesser popularity as PLAYBOY or even PLAYGIRL. If you have any questions? Send us a message to the.eye.of.faith@gmail.com

{MUSIC MINUTE} “ZODIACS” by Roberta Kelly

Well isn’t that just too totally up our alley . . . Ms. Robert Kelly sings “Zodiacs” a funky 1970s disco-era tune about our favourite astrological symbols; all performed in timelessly popping canary yellow!

Sorry Beyonce, but looks like Robert Kelly was rocking this shade of yellow far before the Queen B helped this colour take over the style scene; but that’s just the name of the game! If it was cool once, its gonna be cool forever – so, lest we forget:

{PAST}, {PRESENT}, and {FUTURE} unite!

Hold up, they don’t love you like WE love you Roberta!

Thanks for giving us this joyous tune. Hope you enjoyed it, too…

GUCCI’s Karaoke Chic !

If you know us, like really know us….like really really know us; you know that we love a good ol’ karaoke jam session with our friends!

There’s nothing better – you get to let loose a little (often on a strange day such as a Tuesday), maybe get a little glossed and glam, be surrounded by the best people, sing your favourite songs, and feel like a downright rockstar. Best part is, anyone can do it, and because its karaoke – no one can judge!

We found it to be great for shaking those general nerves we all have, and that fear of looking silly. Once you are on that stage, you can let it all go, and just be free.

We even took it so far as to be hosting our very own KARAOKE CABARET every second and fourth Tuesday at The Casbah, which is an awesome local venue that immediately spoke to us with its red curtain lined stage and moody lighting – very David Lynch! We have a page dedicated to it on our site, so check it out.

But, what really got us was that one of our favourite luxury brands of all time GUCCI is up on the karaoke bandwagon right along with us!!! If we thought we got glossed and glam for karaoke, Alessandro Michele takes Karaoke Chic to a whole new level….

Check out these wicked cool videos via Gucci’s awesome Instagram page.

I’m telling you, when we first saw these we flipped out (in a good way)! Glad that karaoke is some sort of fashionable trend now, because damn is it always fun!

Maybe more people will get their butts of their couch, and join us for some karaoke fun times! Granted its on a Tuesday, but its great to break up that work week with a little irreverent joy.

At least, we think so . . .

Donna Summer Tribute: Where Do Disco Goddesses Go?

Earlier today, after battling cancer, the 1970s/disco icon Donna Summer passed. There is no doubt, she is up there playing for the Big Man. This is a woman that knows “She Works Hard For the Money”.

Summers was born December 31, 1948, and after doing background vocals for legendary rockers Three Dog Night throughout the 70s where she met producers Giorgio Moroder (scores for ‘The Never Ending Story‘ and ‘Scarface‘, ‘Call Me‘ by Blondie, ‘Putting Out Fire‘ by Bowie, the list really goes on…) and Peter Bellotte. She eventually signed a record deal in Europe, releasing Lady of the Night as her first album in 1974.

Donna Summers would soon begin to represent everything that is the era. The embodiment of all things decadently glamorous, the passion of the times; her songs have the ability to take you on a wild fantasy and really tell a story. Movies play in your mind. Like a sorceress of emotion, she powered through hits such as Last Dance (for which she would win a Grammy),MacArthur Park“, and the paramount of the decade She Works Hard for the Money“.

To find her signature sound, Donna practiced imitating Marilyn Monroe’s cooing.  She would also spend time in the dark moaning and groaning to warm up her voice before sessions. Everyone has their way. Donna definitely had hers.

“God had to create Disco, so I could be born and be successful”

Donna Summer.

There is no way to even separate the era from this icon of Disco’s heydey. When love was in the air, and the nights were long and extravagant. Lights flashing, Disco’s last dance has yet to be played thanks to hits like Ms. Summers’. So while records may burn in stadiums, and the world reminisces on the last days of Disco, it really lives on in the talent, beauty, and grace, Donna Summers leaves behind to this day.
