STYLE {WISE} Romeo, Romeo . . .

Where for art thou, Romeo?

Ro·me·o
ˈrōmēˌō/
noun
noun: Romeo; plural noun: Romeos

1. an attractive, passionate male seducer or lover.

There’s nothing so timeless as a Romeo . . . its amazing after hundreds of years, a fictional character could still be so prevalent in our culture. I guess, not so surprising, considering he was created by the genius that is William Shakespeare.

He is a wonderful archetypal character of a beautiful boy, young and naive, but full of vigour, and somewhat tragic in the end….so, like many young men, which is what most certainly resonates. We recently acquired a really cool vintage theatre costume with some Shakespearean swag which got us thinking on the topic.

CHECK IT OUT IN THE {SHOP}

I don’t think many men can deny they have a bit of Romeo in them. I know for certain many men cannot deny they wish they were as bad ass as say Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann’s iconic 90s pop culture cult classic “Romeo + Juliet” which brought the tale to the beach and the streets and mansions of Los Angeles for a hyper technicolor MTV version that still resonates today, especially when it comes to style.

Do you remember the first time you watched the “Love at First Sight Scene” in the film with that glorious neon aquarium and that haunting “Kissing You” song playing…shit! I mean, come on!!! Claire Danes is especially gorgeous, and her sensitive acting abilities really shine through.

People would kill me for actually saying this, but they were robbed of Academy Award nominations, truly.

I’m not going to lie, we were pushing the tropical shirts long before every major fashion house started picking up the trend (see: +THE CASE FOR HAWAIIAN SHIRTS+), and we’re not upset about it…in fact, its so wonderful to see more guys take risks with their style because of inspirations like this!

While, Dicaprio’s gang chic Romeo is uber cool, we wanted to look back on some previous Romeos – most especially Leonard Whiting from Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo & Juliet”, which is hands down our favourite.

Quick shout out to Douglas Booth in the 2013 version – very handsome guy, but the film is redundant AF – so here’s a quick pic should suffice.

Zeffirelli’s film is unique, as it was the first time two unknown teenage actors were cast in the lead of such a massive Shakespeare production, and a world-wide search brought the world the ethereal youthful beauty of Olivia Hussey (she ain’t no hussy, but she did also star in the cult Canadian horror flick “Black Christmas” – you can’t miss those eyes) who was only 15 at the time, and the handsome Leonard Whiting (17) , who lets face it, really does look like Zac Efron.

Certified, he did it first!

Their chemistry is unpalpable, and the entire production is lush and dripping sophistication- Roger Ebert even went as far to say it is the best film of Shakespeare ever made. Respectfully it was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, and Director, and won for its gorgeous cinematography, and Danilo Donati’s sumptuous costumes.

It even inspired the fashion scene at the time with the two stars appearing in various fashion magazines rocking mod styles with a medieval flare. The two teens were definitely a big IT couple of the moment. So, if you haven’t seen this classic, do yourself a favour already!

Another Romeo might be the OG of movie star Romeos – Leslie Howard who starred opposite of Norma Shearer in George Cukor’s 1936 film. Neither of them really exude that youthful innocence, seeing as they are grown ass adults!

But, the vibe is full-on Hollywood glamour with a dazzle and flare that is just so fabulously extra, and sadly missed today!!! Also, very inspired by Leslie Howard’s perfectly coiffed hair!

We all know the story, so let’s just take a look at a few snaps to spark and inspire the Romeo vibe.

Hitching a Ride with Time- Young and Wild 1960 - Vintage photo

The question of time travel is a query as old as time itself.

And while science struggles to bring to the forefront the pure mechanics of it all, lucky individuals throughout the centuries have inexplicably found themselves doing the time warp.

Indeed, countless stories of men and women lost between the vortex of the past, present, and future have erupted throughout history (you might remember our story on the Time Travelling Hipster), making the questions all the more difficult to answer in the end.

Take for instance Miss Charlotte Moberly, the headmistress of an Oxford college, and her strange and most unusual tale. . .

Charlotte_Anne_Moberly

It was August 10, 1901 and Miss Moberly had taken the afternoon to visit the palace of Versailles with her good friend, Miss Eleanor Jourdan, only to curiously find themselves, while wondering through the palace’s vast and elaborately decorated corridors, beginning to see many people dress in clothes of the 18th Century – including what Miss Moberly would swear was the late, great, Marie Anotinette. They recounted feeling dreamy and depressed, and their surroundings as flat and unnatural.

Everything suddenly looked unnatural, therefore unpleasant; even the trees seemed to become flat and lifeless, like wood worked in tapestry. There were no effects of light and shade, and no wind stirred the trees.
– Miss  Charlotte Moberly

It then seems as quickly as they found themselves interacting with these ghosts of the past, they were brought back to the present day, ending off their visit with a cup of tea at the Hotel des Reservoirs, and not mentioning it again until several months later when they began to research more heavily into the incident.

No parties were booked on that day, and they found that many of the landmarks they had seen were in fact missing from the present day layout of the palace. The two would publish their tale in a book entitled An Adventure, which was released in 1911 with much praise by various Paranormal societies.

It is a mystery unsolved to this day.

The Power of Time - Egypt - Giza - Lightning Bolt Strike

Time travel used to be thought of as just science fiction, but Einstein’s general theory of relativity allows for the possibility that we could warp space-time so much that you could go off in a rocket and return before you set out.

– Stephen Hawking.

Moustaches Dont fool us anymore- time travellers academy- vintage style

This is just one of many incidents throughout history that people have claimed to somehow slip through the borders of the present to live through the past, and sometimes even the future. There are little to no explanations to how these strange events occur, and perhaps its better off there never be. This phenomenon is known as a Time Slip.

Dating back thousands of years, stories of time travellers run amuck throughout world culture, and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. Who knows how many people have taken the opportunity to slip through the sands of time, and exist completely somewhere else as someone else. How long could this last for?

With future knowledge, these individuals might be set to live their life in a much more bountiful and exuberant way by leaving the present to stake claim on the past. Perhaps this is why man has always taken interest in this idea.

I mean, what better advantage in life would you have if you could simply turn back the clock and erase your mistakes? Stop wars. Cure diseases. But where would we be now if this was to happen?

Time Travellers Academy- Dress to Impress- Shock the System - Looking Good Was Never Easier

That’s the thing about the past. We wouldn’t be without it. So to change it, could be very dangerous. . .

Maybe time is a much more powerful entity that can pick and choose as it pleases whom it takes on its journey. Perhaps like any skill, it just takes some practice and training to accomplish. One things for sure, if we were part of the Time Traveller’s Academy, we’d be doing just fine, dressed to nines, looking spiffy in all that vintage clothing the past has to offer.

That’s why we decided to look back, and make it a mission to curate some images of the initiates who may have indeed slipped through the fragile barriers of past, present, and future. For selfish reasons, or style reasons, these are our friends who have locked themselves in the realms of history. What is their mission? What do they hope to find? Will they ever be free?

Time Travelling Wisdom- DARE

That’s just another unsolved mystery.

VINTAGE RED CARPET ROMANCES: Brad Pitt + Juliette Lewis

It seems like ancient history now, but yes, the two were an item, and boy what a handsome item they be.

One of our most popular posts is our “VINTAGE RED CARPET ROMANCES: Brad Pitt + Gwyneth Paltrow” so we thought we’d roll back the clock even a bit further to the dawn of the 90s when Brad Pitt was still a enigmatic young rising star who had hitched himself with the outspoken teenage dream child, Juliette Lewis.

It seemed for a while that their rebellious attitudes and nonchalant coolness were to be forever, but by 1993 their relationship had fizzled out and Brad was on to the next.

Brad Pitt is a huge mega star now, but besides being a major sex icon for both men and women at the time, the more acclaimed star was most definitely Juliette Lewis. Despite being 10 years Brad’s junior, it was she who was nominated in 1992 for an Academy Award for her performance in Cape Fear (at only 18)!

It was at this Academy Awards show the young ingenue made her famous appearance in an Old Hollywood beaded ivory gown, flapper pearls, and corn rows. Talk about PUNK ROCK?!

So, what was the problem?

When asked by a fan at a concert for her band The Licks, “What was Brad like in bed?”, Lewis laughed hysterically retorting “He was no BIG deal, if ya know what I mean!”.

Something things just aren’t meant to be…but it’s fun to look back and check out some of their wicked threads. Brad Pitt brings grunge to Hollywood with true star quality, as well as looking like he hasn’t aged a hair, while Lewis is always breaking new bounds in her own funky, quirky, personal style.

I think I’ll definitely be dancing, today.

FAME, LOVE, and EXCESS: Behind the Scenes of Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind the Candelabra”

Scott Thorson and Liberace - Vintage Black and White photograph

Check out this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at “Behind the Candelabra”, HBO’s newest film by Academy Award winning director, Steven Soderbergh. The film is a decadent look back at the life of famed musician Liberace and his “tempestuous” six year relationship with his young lover and limousine driver, Scott Thorson.

The film is crashing the Cannes film festival, and is being eaten up alive by critics for its passionate performances by Michael Douglas (as Liberace, himself) and Matt Damon (as the apple of his eye), and the sumptuous reincarnation of Liberace’s over-the-top lifestyle.

Vintage Valentine’s Day Fashion + Life Crush: Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman

EOF- Paul newman and joanne woodward - a couple who toke together stay together too - vintage valentines day fashion idol crushes

Of all the Hollywood stars who hitched a ride with each other  in the highway of life, our most beloved, and favourite of them all has to be the All-American dream team of Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman.

Never a dull moment with the two. Despite their classic appearance, the duo definitely display some spunk in their relationship. When you go through pictures of the two, they are always laughing, or hugging, kissing, playing games – this is the kind of couple everyone wishes they were in their life.

And you know, they never ever did divorce (unlike so many other Hollywood heat-of-the-moment marriages). Instead, they were loyally by each other’s side all the way to the Newman’s death in 2008. The two would even open a hospital for children in their lifetime together, as well as starring in 10 films together (and 5 more that Newman directed but did not appear in). Yes indeed, there were quite the power couple.

In fact, before marrying each other, Newman was already a married man, and Woodward was dating the Dapper Dan of the Decade, Gore Vidal (the iconic writer and style aficionado). Vidal later claimed the entire relationship was a ruse to distract and entice Paul Newman to Woodward. I guess it worked, because it wasn’t long before Newman was filing for divorce and making the final arrangements to work it out with the talented Ms. Woodward.

The two both won Oscars: Newman in 1986 for “The Color of Money“, and Woodward in 1958 for “The Three Faces of Eve” (sort of a 1950s version of “The United States of Tara” – a great performance).

Yes indeed, it’s like they had everything. On top of it all, they always seemed to display such class and dignity. Both their style is never over-the-top, and especially Newman is always going for simple classics in his wardrobe. E.O.F. Style Divinity : Neile Adams AKA {WOMAN FROM THE SOUTH}

Ruby Neilam Salvador “Neile” Adams (born July 10, 1932) is a Filipino actress, singer and dancer who made more than twenty appearances in films and television series between 1952 and 1991. Most notably famous for being the first wife of iconic and enigmatic star, Steve McQueen, being married to the man from 1956-1972.

Neile was born in Manila, in the Philippines July 10, 1932 . Her mother, Carmen Salvador, was of German, Spanish, and Filipino descent, and her father was of English, Chinese, and Filipino ancestry. Her mother, a dancer, was the sister of basketball player and actor Lou Salvador. She was a girl on an island with star’s in her eyes, and the world was her oyster.

But the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor and all Hell broke loose in Manila.  Japanese occupation began and Neile and her mother were taken prisoner and were put in a concentration camp on the grounds of Santo Tomas University where they would spend three terrifying years.
Liberated by America, Neiles family would find freedom in the United States, she’d enrol at the Katherine Dunham School of Dance.  With a prize scholarship and exotic beauty, Neile Adams could feel her dreams waiting for her around the corner.  She became a model for crime and detective magazines (which Steve McQueen would modestly do around the same time, the pair never meeting at these shoots).  It was a decent way to make money but embarrassed her mother and she quit speaking to her.

She’d bump into a young, blonde actor around restaurants, but the two didn’t formally meet until Neile was on a date with actor/producer Mark Rydell.  McQueen would privately make it known to Rydell that this young exotic gorgeous woman, Neile, was going to be his! The two fell madly in love, opening each other’s eyes to new worlds and passion neither had known before.  The two lovers would marry November 2, 1956, only four short months after meeting.

The pair starred in a memorable episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents  television series in 1960 called “Man from the South” based on a short story by Roald Dahl.  Though Neile’s charisma and clear star potential always shines through in any scene, it was her husband who insisted his wife give up her day job on stage and film, and take on the full-time duties of being a housewife.  Without hesitation, the young budding starlet succumbed to her man’s ego and a custom of the times,  and gave up on her own dreams of stardom and used her own already established Hollywood connections to help Steve McQueen’s acting career get off the ground, and thrive.  For years, as his career failed to ignite, he leeched off the successful dancer’s money — spending her earnings on new cars, drugs and other women.

When he landed a small role in the film of Harold Robbins’s trashy novel, “Never Love A Stranger”, only days passed before he embarked on an intensely sexual affair with the film’s leading lady actress Lita Milan — and then proudly told his wife about it.  According to Neile: ‘Lita would be the first in a long line of flings that would plague me throughout our married life. OK, I thought, I can handle it — I have to — as long as he doesn’t flaunt it.’

Full of inadequacy and doubt, the young dancer settled into a life of staying home to raise her two children with McQueen, and evenings of seclusion, boiling up high grade Peyote Steve would by from the Navajo Indian, while Steve would disappear getting stoned off cocaine, LSD, amongst other experimental drugs with his abundance of Hollywood-hanger-ons.

McQueens philandering ways would prove to save his life on one fateful day.  He was invited to a party at Sharon Tate’s house on the afternoon of August 7, 1969, which he had every intention of attending, until a phone call from a blonde mistress of his at the time distracted him from the festivities.  He barely avoided the Charles Manson Massacre, where Sharon Tate, amongst others he knew well and others he never knew where all savagely murdered.

The constant betrayals and drug fuelled arguments would prove to be more devastating for the once infectiously loving couple.  Neile Adams could no longer live within a tumultuous marriage and a life of disillusioned success.  After incidents of adultery accusations, loaded gun death threats and an escalating abusive marriage she would be the one to file for divorce and the two would be divorced by 1972.   Neile remained to be one of McQueens closest confidantes until he would pass away from lung cancer in 1980.

“My life and times with Steve had spanned twenty-four years. More than half my life at the time of his death. They were over now. Gone. Finished.

That he loved me and that I had been the most important person in his life, I have no doubt.  That I loved him and that he had been the most influential person in mine cannot be denied.

Good-bye, my friend. You are missed. It sure was one hell of a ride.”
Neile Adams.

Neile would go on to find another love for herself.  She met Alvin Toffel at a luncheon for her friend, Princess Grace of Monaco. He was as interesting a man as he was handsome and confident enough to live with and support Neile’s memories of the iconic Steve McQueen. He was an air force fighter pilot  and an engineer with the Gemini and Apollo Space programs. He and Neile married on January 19, 1980 and would remain husband and wife for the rest of his life when he passed in 2005.

Neile has written an in depth and honest perspective about her life and marriage to McQueen in her Memoirs, My Husband My Friend. She also offers many commentaries in various Steve McQueen specials, always honouring the memory of her late and beloved husband.   We wanted to take some time to honour and appreciate Neile herself who lived through so much and still shines bright like a true star.
