{STYLE-WISE} Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc

Google_Doodle_Eug_ne_Emmanuel_Viollet_le_Duc_200th_Birthday

Yesterday, French architect and theorist Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc {27 January 1814 – 17 September 1879} was celebrated by the Google Doodle for his renowned work in the advancement of his field, and his forethought in celebrating Medieval architecture in the modern day. His work was the antithesis of the popular style of the time period, and continued to be an inspiration long after his death in 1879 to many architects including Frank Lloyd Wright.

Using advanced technology unavailable to the masons and engineers of the time, Viollet-le-Duc implemented Industrial Age techniques to reinforce and celebrate the many marvels of his homeland including Chartres Cathedral and the iconic Notre Dame de Paris.

We always say the {past} influences the {present} in a way that shapes the {future}, and Viollet-Le-Duc seems to have definitely gotten the memo. For those who can take on board this eternal wisdom, be prepared for a far richer experience of the everyday than if you boldly ignore this blatantly evident truth.

And while the physical restorations themselves are a sight to behold, his meticulous hand-renderings are among the most wildly beautiful exhibits of man’s inherent genius and promise.

+E.O.F.+ LEGENDARY ISSUES No. 1

This week, we bring to you a set of most legendary fashion publications from the past 10 years. Legends are made everyday, and in the fashion industry, magazines are like Bibles on who to worship, and ideas are permeating throughout the scene.

For years we have collected some of the world’s most coveted publications for knowledge, inspiration, and for the chance to watch the timeline of fashion play out before your eyes. Everyone’s got to start somewhere, and some of today’s biggest fashion icons owe their notoriety to the photo shoots captured in these magazines.

We wanted to showcase these works for their superior craftsmanship and innovation, and also show off the timeline of fashion history right under our noses.

This issue of POP MAGAZINE from September 2008 will be the first of our LEGENDARY ISSUES.

POP Magazine - Naomi Campbell - September 2008

Featuring Naomi Campbell on the cover, styled by Miucci Prada herself, this cover marks a transition in fashion to a streamlined romanticism, marked by Prada’s 2008 revival of lace. This trend has since become ever popular for both women and men since.

The cover says “HOT NUNS” right on it, and boy do the people at POP really go the distance with this one. Entitled “NUN HEADS”, the beautiful fashion editorial showcases a strange interwoven tale of nuns in heat.

It’s nearly as provocative as Ken Adam’s “The Devils”, but pulls out all the stops to make it as fresh and fashion forward as ever. Starring Angela Lindvall, Guinevere Van Seenus, Missy Rayder, and Magdelena Frackowiak – this shoot is a powerful editorial that is legendary and iconic to this day. The nun inspiration also had a huge impact on the fashion world, in general, and really got a huge kick start with these images.

Shoots like that alone, are why you buy a magazine! But on top of that, there are plenty more shoots with stars like Amber Valletta and Naomi Campbell, herself. One of the highlights of the issue is a beautiful story shot by Ryan McGinley featuring Agyness Deyne jumping off of fire escapes in the snow. Beautiful.

And on the style knowledge front, the issue provides a beautiful summary and history of legendary Hollywood costume designer Adrian, who designed some of the most glamorous and iconic looks of the 1930s and 40s.

BURGER GIRL WANTS YOU…

If you have never heard of Benjamin Dukhan then please let me introduce you to one of fashion’s most intelligible of beings. His face has helped redefine the image of the male model, whom had always been young, spry, and smooth. While he is both young and spry, it is his scruffy hairiness that has helped make a mark for the man on the mainstream.

With a beard like Zeus, Benjamin has become a one-of-a-kind life force in the industry, walking for some of the biggest names out there, and bringing a manly elegance to each new look he dons. He has also shown up on The Eye of Faith in the past in our story entitled “My Demon Brother” walking one of his best looks in the Jean Paul Gaultier FW 2011 collection.

As well as his continuing stint as one of fashion’s staple faces on the catwalk, Benjamin Dukhan’s exciting multi-disciplinary background has taken him, and the industry, to new and unseen heights.

Beginning his career as a dancer, Benjamin has been able to fuse his love for movement with his unlikely chameleon nature in a continuing performance art piece called BURGER GIRL. As much an art piece as some sort of alter-ego or secret persona, the videos Dukhan and his collaborators have produced give rise to thousands of new notions of what it means to perform in front of a camera.

Not only is Benjamin pushing the bounds of what it means to be a “super model”, but he is also pushing the bounds of dance, art, video, music, and fashion to a world where each can see each other off and amalgamate into a singular dynamic art form.

So where do you come in?

Benjamin needs the help of as many people as he can to fund his latest BURGER GIRL project. Donated funds will go towards the production of his 10th and final video, “Vogue Positive” which will be featured on the official site, as well as on Youtube, and will most likely tour the European underground scene.

There are only four days left to make a contribution, so please check it out.

+You can make your donation here. +

Also make sure to check out his site to watch more original BURGER GIRL videos.

Benjamin is graciously awarding contributors with gifts according to the size of the donation, so best to give generously. It’s not everyday that a high fashion supermodel needs your help, so let’s pull ourselves together and do what we can for the sake of fashion, the sake of art, and getting these worlds closer and closer together!

Sincerely,

{theEye}
