Paradise Found: Adventures in the South Pacific

“Ah, to think how thin the veil that lies Between the pain of hell and Paradise.”

-George William Russell

We like to think of The Eye of Faith as our own special island. Seeing these brave young men embracing nature, the islands, the beach, flowers, and  sky made us quite nostalgic for the faded dreams of these long lost memories.

Faded technicolour dreaming and utilitarian practicality make this look fresh and easily reinventable. So, let’s all find our own Bali Hai this Spring and Summer!

“I seen another world. Sometimes I think it was just my imagination”

-Terrence Malick, The Thin Red Line

Commercial Break: Cape Fear (1991) and (1962)

We have to take a moment to remember 1991’s Cape Fear.  Frankly, one of our FAVOURITE performances by Robert De Niro.  Not to mention our beloved Juliette Louis as sultry young daughter,  Jessica Lange and Nick Nolte make up a disturbed family struggling through some tangled up legal woe’s… to say the least.   We admire Martin Scorsese and have to applaud this throwback to pulpy, sexy, retro flicks.

Not to be forgotten, originally done in 1962 and in black and white, every bit of this flick is as exciting as the 1991 version.   Starring the legend Gregory Peck,  each scene is more suspenseful than the last.  We would highly recommend getting your hands on this one, and have a popcorn night snuggled on a sofa!

And a strange twist would have it, or we guess inevitable claims of fame, both actresses who played the young daughter have/had musical careers!  Juliette Lewis tours as Juliette and the Licks, and Lori Martin had a record deal!  Who’s better, you decide!

Have you seen either Cape Fears?? And what do you think of Lori vs. The Licks?

Bad Girls Do it Well!!!

Sometimes it pays to be bad. Seems like British recording artist M.I.A. is always flipping someone off.  Her latest cry of bad girl BADNESS at this year’s Super Bowl, where her middle finger made more of a stir than even her performance.

It was no surprise here at E.O.F. when that illicit middle finger jumped to attention at the end of her verse for Madonna’s single, “Give Me All Your Luvin”, that featured her with fellow female hip-hop star, Nicki Minaj.

After all, M.I.A. has been paving the way for “bad girls” everywhere for nearly a decade now. Did nobody listen to her rap during the song: “I’mma say this once, yeah, I don’t give a shit” ?!!

For nearly a decade now she’s been conquering the landscape for bad girls everywhere.

A little swag, a pop of colour- trust M.I.A. to get it done.

It had been a while since she had exploded on the scene with her dynamic sound. A cool mix of afro, indo, elctro, alternative, and hip hop sound- she is definitely one of the true artists of the past ten years, who also  gives a distinct new definition to “World Music”.

More than that, M.I.A. is a constant activist. From genocide in Sri Lanka, to Palestine, and even African Americans in the U.S., M.I.A. is not one to sit idly on the sidelines as the world shatters before her feet. Not just that, but M.I.A. is a warrior of free speech, and an enemy to censorship and oppression. We’re dealing with a woman of power and action, and is that so bad?

With her latest music video “Bad Girls”, M.I.A furthers her frontier as a woman of power and action. The video transforms the rubble and ruin of the desert into a rapper’s paradise.

Rebel women in animal printed silks, vivacious neon, and drag racing desert gangsters. While the song is called “Bad Girls” it’s really about EMPOWERMENT and LIBERTY.

“Bad Girls” are not as much Bad, as they are Free.

All around the world it seems women are taking action into their own hands.

With 55% of the workforce in America being female, and the recent uprisings in the Middle East by women’s rights activists, it seems more and more ladies are grabbing destiny by the balls, and are not afraid to fight for it!

For so long, women’s roles have been dedicated to cleaning the house and caring for the family, and more and more these roles are being switched or lost altogether.

Living in North America it is easy for us to forget the unique advantage we have over our predecessors; things like microwaves, electric irons, food processors, toasters, vacuums, dishwashers, washing machines, television, computers, and cell phones have made our world a much easier place, and have contributed a hundred-fold to the advances in our society towards women’s rights.

However, the concept of “freedom” extends far beyond the idea of voting or going to work. While women have gained so many freedoms, women in nations such as Egypt and Iraq are fighting for their everyday rights and liberties.

Recently Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, a 20 year old media student drop-out from Cairo, posted nude pictures of herself on a personal blog in “screams against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy”- her bold action, in a country that deeply frowns against nudity of any sort, has started an outrage amongst both liberals and conservatives who do not know what to make of her actions. (for more)

Many fundamentalists accused her of being “mentally sick” and urged for her arrest. Others, agree that while her actions sudden, the immediacy of her art and message are powerful and signifying change all over the Middle East.

As Aliaa boldly stated on her blog to all naysayers:

“Hide all art books and smash naked archaeological statues…Then take off your clothes and look at yourselves in the mirror, then burn your body that you so despise to get rid of your sexual complexes forever, before subjecting me to your bigoted insults or denying my freedom of expression.”

Fiesty. Looks like a little M.I.A. has seeped into her.

While M.I.A. surely isn’t the first “Bad Girl” to hit the scene, we have to salute the Rebel Queen for defending the things that should value most: human life, liberty, freedom of expression, and love. Sometimes you have to be ‘bad’ to get your point across.

Living in such a noisy society,  it’s easy to get lost in the chaos.  So take it on yourself to ask what matters most to you, and to a better tomorrow. Then flip the bird, and promise you’ll fight for it! You are Supersonic! Like Uranium!

Enjoy the pictures. They are a collection of things we really thought brought out the best ideas of M.I.A.’s ultra-wicked new music video. Visit her site for more details.

Sincerely,
-The Eye x

Gender Bender: You’re in Androgyny

“As you know, I’m androgynous. I can wear a jacket that most guys wouldn’t put on. But you make it in guys’ sizes, and suddenly they’re wearing them. I think styles should get back to getting people to wear things that look so good that they don’t care.”
Steven Tyler

As a matter of fact, the hottest model of the season is no other than Andrej Pijec HIMSELF.  Yes, for anyone who’s been living under a rock, the photo above is an Aussie male!  The fashion world just loves an oddity.  Pijec has been appearing in the hottest shows for the past couple seasons, and is nabbing every campaign,  he’s a true sensation.  He recently riled up some naysayers when he was named FHM’s 98th hottest FEMALE by public voters!  Unfortunately the people’s choice was revoked by the Magazine who received an onslaught of frustration and confusion.

We say, if you’ve got it, flaunt it!  Are we going to dress as a woman tonight? Maybe not tonight… but we can still appreciate the diverse beauty the world has to offer.  We say let the people speak,  dammit!  Boy Girls and Girl Boys are here to stay.

Until next time,

E.O.F. Style Icon: Buster Keaton

Known as the ‘Great Stone Face’, standing at an astounding 5’5″ we honour a style icon, Buster Keaton. Unconventional, timeless, and one of a kind comedic sensibility, this man’s legacy is more than just dissolving film and a steely gaze. From a time where men had to be men, Buster found a spot for himself amongst film royalty, with a unique perspective to comedy, and a whimsy to his overall performance nobody could replicate. Watching old reels of this pro, we know we’re witnessing true magic.

“Tragedy is a close-up; comedy, a long shot.”
Buster Keaton

“Silence is of the gods; only monkeys chatter.”
Buster Keaton

Born Joseph Frank Keaton VI, by Vaudville performer parents Joe Keaton and Myra Keaton in Piqua, Kansas on October 4, 1895. The family soon came to tour the Vaudeville scene touring with a medicine show with one of the most dangerous acts about how to discipline a prankster child. Joseph adopted the nickname ‘Buster’ given to him by up and coming Illusionist Harry Houdini himself. Keatons father threw his son down a flight of stairs, where the Illusionist would pick up and dust off the young unharmed boy, referring to the fall as a “buster”.

Business savvy Joe Keaton recognized the appeal of a great show name. Developing in showbiz would lead a young Keaton to search for work in New York where Buster met successful film star and director Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbunkle. This led to Buster being cast in a short The Butcher Boy in 1917, an appearance that would launch Buster Keaton’s film career.

A true individual, Buster would never hesitate if he saw potential for a laugh, whether through some kind of physical comedy stunt (often insisting to do his own stunts which wasn’t common at the time), or going as far as dressing in drag.  This showman brought a fresh spin to the fading Vaudville scene.

Always relevant with the keen sense to know times are a’ changin’, and with a clear baritone voice and stage past, he had nothing to fear over the inevitable transition  of silent movies to ‘talkies’ .   Buster  wanted to bring his signature style to a new generation.  He came to remake many of his past works from the directors chair with modern actors shot for shot.

Having an eclectic and interesting upbringing, style was never something to shy away from for Buster Keaton. Buster busted out of the box with his outlandish and fun fashion choices, be it a tailored tuxedo, or a disheveled clown get-up. His charm and wit always will resinate through his work.

“I gotta do some sad scenes. Why, I never tried to make anybody cry in my life! And I go ’round all the time dolled up in kippie clothes-wear everything but a corset . . . can’t stub my toe in this picture nor anything! Just imagine having to play-act all the time without ever getting hit with anything!”
Buster Keaton

Having battled his own demons being an alcoholic, as well as having some failed marriages under his belt. His personnel was riddled with up’s and down’s, as is the biz. He would come to have a few children from different wives, but it was in 1940, he met and married his third wife Eleanor Norris, who was deeply devoted to him, and remained his constant companion and partner until Keaton’s death.

He was deservedly honoured with an Honorary Academy Award in 1960 for his unique talents and contributions to the film industry. Buster really did have it all, and we think his star is still shining bright today. Special thanks to fuckyeahbusterkeaton who has a great tumblr full of great Buster content!

He passed away at his home, peacefully in his sleep, shortly after playing cards with his wife.

E.O.F. Style Idol: Frankie Avalon, Teen Idol Worship

“I think today’s music absolutely stinks. I really do mean that.”

Frankie Avalon (b.1940).

Don’t worry, we know. Considering today’s reigning teen idol is Mr. Justin Bieber – you know him- it’s easy to see Mr. Avalon’s remorse. Sure the boy from Stratford has plenty of swag, but to Frankie Avalon I’m sure he’s no Teen Angel!

Frankie ascended the throne of Teen Supreme  starring in “Beach Party”with Beachgirl Extraordinarie Annette Funicello, the first of five official “Beach Party” films that would spin “Beach Party” mythology into the public realm, and without a doubt kick fashion’s ass.

frankie avalon

Frankie Avalon was far too much a sweetheart to ever kick anyone’s ass, but his die-hard all american 1960s summer fashions definitely do all the talking anyone needs.

It would be this single released Feb. 2, 1959 , “Venus”, that would debut a young gentleman from Philadelphia’s sparkling talents. Couldn’t imagine the Biebs crooning so cool.

So please enjoy…1959-style!

Sincerely,
