Fly Me To The Moon! 1967 Cosak by Dormeuil Mens Suit Advertising Campaign

The competition for mens suiting was fierce throughout the 1960s – an absolute essential piece of every working man’s wardrobe, while also a time that signalled the decline of this timely tradition.

More than ever, ad men and women were looking for new and exciting ways to capture the attention of dapper gentlemen around the world.

This 1967 Ad Campaign for Cosak by classic French textile company Dormeuil displays the fun they had doing just that!

Obviously inspired by James Bond or any of the other number of mens genre media / plus the overall futurist movement of the 60s; the campaign features a well-dressed man in several of the classic suit designs alongside a bombshell blonde, and it appears they are prepping to go to space…or are in space already? Not quite sure all the exact subtleties of the scenario…its all very entertaining and more than that – stylish as ever!

These images appeared in Tailor & Cutter magazine, and were found courtesy of Voices of East Anglia.

We were drawn to these images while doing some research finding we were lucky enough to have a Dormeuil cloth suit of our own. We recently uploaded it into the {SHOP} so click here to check out the listing, or scroll below for a quick look!

What are the secrets locked deep in history that are haunting us each and everyday? Who are the makers of today, and who shall we become tomorrow?

The Original Roller Skater

The aspirations that seem to be engrained into our soul are to finally climb out of the epic pits of insanity that we collectively call humanity. Nothing ever seems to make sense. In fact, it is impossible not to feel in RAGE!!!

We’ve always been left simply searching…

Perhaps you search the aisles of the school library for some sign of truth, or perhaps you are wise enough to search the labyrinth of light in the sky for a pattern or sign to guide your every wake. The riddle of the sphinx, has it ever been solved? Or is it simply that it’s question has never even been asked . . . ?

What is it about the night? What do we achieve when we dream? This is a journey by man, a mystery that never ceases to delight. Deep in our dreams, we have found our very own {MASTER MASON} waiting patiently for our arrival. Waiting for us to say we’ll stay.

But that would be like laying awake in the shadows you can actually see at night.
We can go about our day to day and never once seek the layers beneath the fragile surface of time and our past . . .

In fact, it continues to live on and on forever, like something eternally true.

Go about your day to day. Seek the seekers in the shadows.

Lets find the {MASTER MASON} that’s within us all…

MARLENE DIETRICH- DEVIL MAY CARE- the eye of faith vintage

Marlene Dietrich is one of those timeless idols of style that will always be remembered. Owe it to the fact that she always acted an individual – this was not a woman to rely on when it came to playing by the rules. In fact, she made her own, and when it came to her style, it was nothing typical of Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s.

Sure, she had plenty of glamour and glitz, but she fused this with an androgynous flair that left men and women addicted to her. Overall, there is a mystery and sensuality that goes hand in hand when speaking to Marlene Dietrich’s style, life, and music – which is the key reminder that staying true to who you are deep inside is the most timeless thing anyone can do.

{MUSIC MINUTE} “Ouija Board, Ouija Board” by MORRISSEY

Vintage Morrissey and his typewriter - style and mens fashion - the eye of faith

There’s a saying that goes:  “You either have it, or you don’t”.

And although, most people these days would love to believe they have it, there is definitely one person you can look back on and say they did “have it”, and equally today too, we are still singing their praises – MORRISSEY.

That sweet croon, and wicked wild hair-do, not to mention that beautiful romantic new wave styling he was always sporting. Striped and houndstooth blazers were never a challenge. Always a little stripped down and casual, that’s the rockstar in him.

Hordes of Mexican teens have adopted him as their Jesus, and Carrie Bradshaw’s little sister has a hamster named MORRISSEY on “The Carrie Diaries”. He’s definitely not one of those forgotten ones.

Young Morrissey -Vintage Mens Fashion Style- the eye of faith

We came across this lovely wonder, and decided immediately to make it our latest {MUSIC MINUTE}. If you’ve never heard it, you might be expecting something a little creepy from the title, but the song gives a lot more love and tenderness than you might ever expect from a song called “Ouija Board, Ouija Board”.

The record needle is currently hovering over anything and everything with an occult theme, so whether it was today, or twenty years ago, this song is destined to be a, dare I say it, cult classic.

Please enjoy this very special {MUSIC MINUTE}!

{Music Minute} “Shaung Shaung Yan” by Den Bai Ying

Found my In the Mood for Love soundtrack lying around at home.

It’s been a while since I’ve listen to it. I had boughten it high school, enticed by the album cover and vaguely noting some Awards buzz that had been circulating on the internet at that time, I thought my disposable teenage income was worth the $25 I remember it costing. . .

in-the-mood-for-love-1

in-the-mood-for-love-2

To say the least, I was enthralled immediately by the solemn tone of the soundtrack mixed with eclectic vintage oldies that ranged from Nat King Cole to this cool Chinese track entitled “Shaung Shaung Yan” by Dan Bai Ying.

It brings me to a place. I like that place. It conjures up images from the film which are as haunting as every Wong Kar Wai film always is.

He always brings a stylistic edge that is so cinematic, but simple, and absolutely graceful in its visual prose and chemistry in action. The film is a menagerie of mood through colour, and watch how drastically and dramatically colour plays a role in his movies.

This matched with the cuts and characters of the clothing chosen for each scene, and you have a virtual vortex of vintage inspiration before your eyes. . .

I like to conjure this film when I want to feel cool and relaxed but sophisticated and worldly.

Jack is Whack- Behind the Scenes- Chinatown (1974) - Vintage

The scene almost comes out of nowhere, but its an integral piece of the puzzle in what is arguably one of the best films ever made.

Roman Polanski’s 1974 classic “Chinatown” was written by Robert Towne (who won the film’s sole Academy Award for Original Screenplay) and starred Faye Dunaway and the never better Jack Nicholson in a poignant reconception of the classic film noir that took the genre from the dark wet streets of the cold bitter city to the overheated dry spell of a Los Angeles bathed in tones of gold, cream, and pastel hues.

jack- jake gittes- chinatown (1974) - menswear- vintage- style wise- eye of faith

There had never been a hero before or since who spent most as much screen time with an obtrusive bandage covering his face, and yet still just be as dapper.

For the film, legendary costume designer, Anthea Sylbert, designed and crafted most of the pieces from scratch to ensure the perfect fit and tonality with the film’s washed-out summery palette. For Dunaway’s character, Sylbert took inspiration from classic noirs such as “Double Indemnity” and “Mildred Pierce”, but it is truly the stunning menswear for Jake Gittes who receives most of the love in the wardrobe department (which is very very rare, and much appreciated on our part).

anthea sylbert sketch- jake gitts- chinatown

menswear inspiration- the eye of faith- jack nicholson- jake gittes- chinatown-1974

Indeed, Sylbert has chosen only the finest materials to work with in crafting clothes for Jake. Three-piece suits made of quality wools, silks, and linens with wide lapels indicative of the period (1937). Best of all, you will never find him in your run of the mill suit – it always has some brilliant colour story to it, and with the summer heat, Jake isn’t afraid to embrace lighter colours (camel, khaki, sage – you should follow suit).

And what would a three-piece suit be without a crisp, clean, and modern fedora? Jake definitely has some serious style in spades.

Evelyn Mulwray and Jake Gittes - Vintage Style- Chinatown (1974) - The Eye of Faith - style wise

While watching the film, keep an eye out for impressive pocket square and necktie combinations. It’s a great way to pick up a few tips and garner a little inspiration. Don’t be afraid of pattern, and aim to stand out from the crowd.

There must be over a dozen separate looks over the span of the film, but that’s just the kind of guy Jake Gittes is. He knows the power of style, and what it means to dress to impress. After all, it’s much easier to go where you need, and get what you want, like that.

So let’s take a few pointers, and look at why almost 40 years later, “Chinatown” is the ultimate go-to for vintage style inspiration this summer!

Getting Down To Business! Stylish Business Fashion for Men

When it comes to fashion, men often find it rather challenging to create their own style.

The reason for this, arguably, may be that men’s fashion is more streamlined with often fewer options to create an individual look and style. This is especially true in business fashion, where the dress-codes for men tend to be exactly defined.

While clearly defined dress-codes make the selection for the right business attire easier, they also hold one decisive disadvantage for the stylish and style-conscious man: this uniformity makes it a lot harder to create an individual style.

EOF Getting Down To Business Fashion- Marlon Brando Ties His Tie

Matching tie and shirt

This is where stylish men’s accessories come into play. They provide a subtle way of underlining one’s own style and sense of fashion in the often rigid business world. This is why, when it comes to stylish business accessories, the devil is in the detail.

Getting Down to Business- Boyer- by-the sartorialist

Hereby, the tie that one wears in combination with the suit can be a statement in itself.

The tie is the part of the business attire that shows the largest variation in colors, patterns and styles. When picking a tie, it should provide a contrast to the shirt, which can be created by observing some color matching patterns. The style-conscious man will seek to stand out in the streamlined business fashion by either wearing a stylish shirt or a unique tie.

When it comes to accessories, there is arguably nothing more stylish than wearing a unique and timeless watch.

While today there are many precise timekeeping devices available, trademark watches have lost none of their appeal in modern times. On the contrary, brands like Cartier are more popular than ever before, since they provide an essentially manly accessory that combines technology, fine craftsmanship and art.

These features make premium watches the confident and style-conscious man’s best friend.
