We might not be familiar in the least with the name Josephine Siao, but in Hong Kong she remains one of the most beloved stars of all time. Starting her career as a child, she quickly became one of the biggest teen idols of the late 1960s, and made a very successful transition into adult roles.
Its easy to see why, especially in this insane music video of the young star covering American rock band Gary Puckett & The Union Gap ‘s classic song “Young Girl”. We loved the colours and retro-future vibes, as well as the insane 60s fashions, so wanted to bring this hidden gem to the forefront as is our mission here at The Eye of Faith!

This year we are super psyched to not have just one fashion show, but two at this year’s Supercrawl three day extravaganza where art, music, fashion take over the streets of downtown Hamilton! It has become an internationally recognized must-see event, and our Sunday show will be the cherry on the top of the cake for us at The Eye of Faith; getting the chance to showcase the undying awesomeness of all things vintage!
We put up a few tidbits of our +HOLLYWOOD BABYLON+ collection on the site, and also gave you a sneak peak at the mood boards for the {FIVE PARTS} of the Sunday Showcase, so be sure to mark your calendars and get yourself one of the 200 seats that will be inside the epic Supercrawl Fashion Zone Tent this year.
For those who have been following us, you know our philosophy is that of bringing the {PAST} to the {PRESENT} to influence the {FUTURE}, and we hope to really bring this ideal to life in the Sunday show. We have 24 models, and nearly 100 looks curated through our own collection as well as our good friends at Vintage Soul Geek, and Lost & Found Vintage!
The past is another land, not too far beyond our reach!
Lets invoke the spirits of style, and make the world a better place.
Found my In the Mood for Love soundtrack lying around at home.
It’s been a while since I’ve listen to it. I had boughten it high school, enticed by the album cover and vaguely noting some Awards buzz that had been circulating on the internet at that time, I thought my disposable teenage income was worth the $25 I remember it costing. . .
To say the least, I was enthralled immediately by the solemn tone of the soundtrack mixed with eclectic vintage oldies that ranged from Nat King Cole to this cool Chinese track entitled “Shaung Shaung Yan” by Dan Bai Ying.
It brings me to a place. I like that place. It conjures up images from the film which are as haunting as every Wong Kar Wai film always is.
He always brings a stylistic edge that is so cinematic, but simple, and absolutely graceful in its visual prose and chemistry in action. The film is a menagerie of mood through colour, and watch how drastically and dramatically colour plays a role in his movies.
This matched with the cuts and characters of the clothing chosen for each scene, and you have a virtual vortex of vintage inspiration before your eyes. . .
I like to conjure this film when I want to feel cool and relaxed but sophisticated and worldly.
Slick suits, hair, graphic ties, and sun glasses at night for the boys; and for the ladies, try some Asian inspiration with a glamorous 1960s edge that always gives off the ultimate sense of cool. Give everything a tropical edge to make it true.
Here’s some stuff in our {SHOP} that can help you get In the Mood for Love:
Dapper Vintage Classic Black, Grey, Multi-Colour Woven Tweed Tailored Sports Coat Mens Blazer – MEDIUM – $80
Vintage Midcentury 1960s Aloha Joe Tropical Hawaiian Luxury Beach Resort Party Shirt – XSMALL – $45
Pretty “In the Mood for Love” Hand-Crafted Silk Vintage Long Sleeved Asian Oriental Red Evening Cocktail Dress – SMALL – $125
Vintage 1960s Men’s Glazed Mid-Century “FLORIDA” Tie Clip with Palm Trees and Flamingo PLUS Stamped Original Vintage Snapshot – $15
Before Psy and K-Pop took over the world, there was Kyu Sakamoto – one of Japan’s brightest international stars, and the first Asian singer to have a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
The breakthrough hit was this one, called “Sukiyaki” and it reached number one in the US in June, 1963- and is still number one in our books!
Sadly, Sakamoto died in the deadliest single aircraft disaster in history, the tragedy of Japan Airlines Flight 123. But, songs like this will always make sure he is remembered and immortal.
Take a minute to enjoy…

As we spend our waking days on the open road, we come across so many new faces any given sunday. Each with a story, and a depth of compassion unique to each individual.
If one common thread runs true, it’s the restraint one can take to fit the ‘norm’. We’re constantly encouraging our readers to do away with this mask of normality, and craft a new facade, mirror’d in your own image. With qualities unique and true.
Time holds no barred, because this is a tale as old as time. Make your mark, and proudly wear the mask of yourself while starring back at your own destiny. Head no fear, temptation will be near. The strength you have in diversity will always stand beside you in your courage.
Old photographs tell the oldest tales perhaps the loudest. With mystery behind the eye’s, story’s we’ll never truly get to hear, yet an expression of a mask telling every detail.
“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”
-Oscar Wilde
So head our words, the world is full of so many pressures today, and it seems like everyday the numbers are growing, so the last thing you need is adding yourself to the equation! JUST DO YOU!
Find what makes you happy, and what sets you apart, then just let the freak flags fly. For two thousand years we have been obsessed with being unhappy with ourselves, and it’s about time we start to change that!
This music minute was brought to our attention by one of our friends, and the second we heard Yoko Ono‘s iconic cry, we knew we had a Music Minute on our hands. We love strong artistic women who aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Queen of the Lucid Dream, the track “We’re all water” truly draws the conversation… what do we all have in common? The thread of mankind linking us all together is simple! We are all Water!! (duh.)
An amazing recording with great musicians, Stan Bronstein is the KILLER sax player, Tex Gabriel is the other guitarist, Gary Van Scyoc is the bassist and Adam Ippolito is the keyboardist with Rich Frank as the drummer. Oh, and did we mention it was produced by Phil Spector . Give this melodic jubilee a listen, and tell us what you guys think of The Queen of the Peace Movement and Music Scene, Yoko Ono.
Sharing a similar experimental flavour as B-52’s smash “Rock Lobster“. We have to say this track somehow takes it to the next level with comparisons between iconic pop idols, and political figures. From Chairman Mao to Richard Nixon, not to mention a few name drops of Marilyn Munro, Raquel Welsh, Lenny Bruce, and the Queen of England, this experimental jam really knocks our socks off and get’s our toe’s tappin’ BIG TIME.
Twin Peaks fans will definitely remember Joan Chen as the exotic Josie Packard, but this talented beauty has appeared in dozens of feature films including the Academy Award winning film The Last Emperor.
Initially the role of Josie, widow of the Packard Mills, was intended for Isabella Rossellini, but as fate would have it, the remarkably stunning and poised young Chinese actress would step in and completely redefine the character, and become an integral role in the goings on at Twin Peaks!
As well as being a role model to Asian women looking to make a career in television and movies, Josie remains iconic for the grace and elegance Joan was able to bring to the character creating looks both definitive to the show, as well as inspiring the fashion of the era.
In short, we love her! So in celebration, we’ve pick out a few of our favourite Josie looks from the show! Hope you enjoy!
Joan Chen turns 51 today. So, make sure you are wishing her a very Happy Birthday!
