The Future is Now! Retro 90s Sci Fi on the A/W 2018 Runways…

Back in 1999 a quirky cool show came out called ZENON: Girl of the 21st Century and now that we are actually in the 21st century its cool to see they weren’t so far off!

We always say the past informs our future, so when speaking on this idea of retro-futurism its so fun to notice visions of the future from the past, and usually in this context we speak often of a retro-future from the 40s, 50s, even 60s . . .but now we are seeing retro-future ideas taken from the 90s.

Jeremy Scott really took it there 100% with this vibe in his Autumn-Winter 2018 collection from the pastel millenial metallic palette with strokes of neon… to some really quirky weird sci-fi silhouettes.

The wigs brought me back to another 90s sci-fi gem which may be a bit more obscure unless you lived in Canada than guaranteed you watched this show if you grew up in the 90s: SPACE CASES!!!

The show first aired back in 1996, and has since stuck in our minds as a really rad adventure series featuring some cool talent. I think the plot was best summed up by Bethany on IMDB:

One day at an academy, 7 people sneak aboard a mysterious spaceship. The people consist of 5 students, who are Harlan, the athletic leader from earth; Catalina, the Saturnian rainbow-head with a sonic scream; Bova, the negative sour-pus Uranian who can generate electricity; Rosie, the happy Mercurian who radiates heat; and Radu, the Andromedan with super strength and hearing; the other two people are Mrs. T.J. Davenport, the principal at the academy and Commander Seth Goddard, who is their teacher/commander. While on-board they meet an android named Thelma who informs them that they are on a spaceship that is half living and called the Christa. Just when they meet up they become aware that they are approaching a hole that if they get sucked into, they will be stuck in space for 7 years. They eventually do and along their journey they encounter many hardships and enemies that they work together to overcome. They also meet some new people like Suzee (Catalina’s imaginary friend from another dimension who gets pulled into this dimension during a warp, putting Catalina in her dimension; she can read minds and has gills), Elmira (Sponge daughter of Warlard Shank), Warlard Shank (the arch enemy of them), etc.

Thorough analysis. Thank you Bethany.

The wigs immediately gave me some serious Jewel Staite as Catalina vibes; although, hers is just that much more with the multi-colored rings representing her home planet Saturn. Am I wrong?

Oh, and sorry about the strange captions in the two photos there. They are entertaining, nonetheless. Since it is a more obscure show, it was hard to find some great images, but I think you get the vibe, and especially with a few of the looks from Jeremy Scott’s AW 2018 show sandwiched between- I think the inspirations are undeniable!

Boy, Canadian television in the 90s was wicked…and man, Jeremy Scott’s interns must have been binge watching some serious shit, because you can’t deny that the painted ladies of Jeremy Scott’s Moschino Autumn-Winter 2018 show really give me crazy Rosie comparisons!

Granted, Jeremy Scott’s inspiration for this collection was Jackie-O, Aliens, and Conspiracy Theories so its not that far off…

Some other designers you can’t deny took a very similar route were Prada:

And, Maison Margiela Couture Autmn-Winter 2018 which was a symphony of hologram! Our jaws were dropethed watching one look after another walk down the runway.

If you have a chance, watch the actual show so you can see how magically these fabrics react to light- its magnificent and really shows the art of textile design and the incredible things being engineered today.

{Watch the Maison Margiela Couture Autumn-Winter 2018 Show}

Since we are on this topic, I wanted to throw in some pics of a few more Canadian 90s aliens from the cult show ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? – episode: “The Thirteenth Floor”!!!

Two kids get lured by stylish 90s aliens to a strange toy company that just happened to open on the 13th floor of their apartment complex where they usually play floor hockey…moral of the story is, if you think its weird a toy company opened overnight on the 13th floor of your apartment complex then just stay away!!! Especially when they’re dressed like that!

Never would I have imagined in 20 years I’d be talking about Are You Afraid of the Dark or Space Cases in the context of fashion and style…its actually kind of shocking how many designers landed on this vibe, but nevertheless its really interesting to have this kind of nostalgia prevalent in the scene, and no doubt we will be seeing more and more of this as time goes on.

The {past} repeats itself, even if that {past} is imitating the {future}!

Something about this vibe has always been in us, and we have been tending to lean towards this style many times – from metallic foil shirts, to PVC jackets, and definitely anything hologram! I guess, we like to be ahead of the curve, and it really goes to show the power in staying relevant with the past.

Here are a few pieces in our {SHOP} right now that epitomize the 90s Back to the Future vibe that is taking over!

AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO A TAILOR MADE SUIT

essential guide to buying a suit

So, you’ve decided to buy a suit but need some tips on how to approach it all? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Here’s my essential guide to buying a quality tailor made suit. Enjoy.

When it comes to that all round suit that you can wear to pretty much any event (except a funeral), then you can’t go past a quality navy blue knit.  It goes with everything, too – and is essential to any man’s wardrobe.

Fabrics

High-quality menswear fabric is quite a niche market when it comes to suppliers, so be sure to establish where and what type of fabric is sourced.

If your store offers a wide range of quality fabrics, then this will indicate a solid and established relationship between store and vendor. Generally, English and Italian mills should also be in the equation here

Tailor from WOLF OF WALL STREET- ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO BUYING A SUIT- THE EYE OF FAITH blog

The Trim

In the tailor made suit business, it’s the little things that count the most; those nuances that stand out and provide real, long-lasting value.

Quality trims are essential and need to coincide with the fabric on offer. This includes buttons, internal linings and zippers. Other internal trim offerings also include chest and collar canvases, collar felts, sleeve heads and shoulder pads.

There will, however, be hard to establish until you’ve worn and dry cleaned your tailor made suit a few times. If it withstands the test of time, then you can assure you have been sold some quality trims.

tailor-shop-vintage-painting

Handmade

Nothing beats a handmade suit, particularly in areas like the lapel, canvas, sleeves and collar.

When a tailor adds their handmade touches to these specific areas, it adds another layer of dimension to the suit and allows for greater flexibility.

Like mentioned before, it’s those little nuances that will stand out and separate a good tailor made suit from an average one.

Steve McQueen- Vintage Style Idol- Eye of Faith Vintage-8

Number of Fittings

Some tailors will have a policy for how many fittings they will offer you as part of the tailored experience. Once that number is up, though, you will begin to incur additional costs.

Be sure to clarify this with your bespoke tailor before you commit to buying from them. Usually, this will depend on your body and how well you generally fit into off the rack garments as well as how well the tailor measures you in the initial consultation.

Post-Purchase

Alterations and guarantee are key. It’s super important that your tailor has some policies in place that ensure your tailor made suit provides long-term value.

With alterations, a good tailor should allow for natural body fluctuations that occur. If you lose or gain a couple of pounds then you should be covered. This is all within a reason, of course.

Lastly, a guarantee of some sort, either money back or 100% satisfied to ensure peace of mind is essential in the tailoring process. Experienced, skilled and customer focused bespoke tailors will usually have these post-purchase offers, however, it’s always worth checking out before committing to buying from them.

CONCLUSION

Buying a suit can be one of the most rewarding and life changing experiences for a man. After all, first impressions are everything in this world, and what better way than display your confidence than rocking the perfect suit.

Invest time in learning more about FABRIC and TRIMS, and be sure to research where HANDMADE bespoke tailors are in your neighbourhood, and once you get there, not to forget FITTINGS and any POST PURCHASE guarantees and alterations that are included with your new suit.

We-go-together-like-the-winter

{source}

Here in Southern Ontario things are getting grimmer by the day. Not that we don’t like Winter – you know us boys love the comfort of a slouchy silk shirt or a easy breezy Hawaiian, but Old Man Winter just won’t stop peaking his nasty head out to remind us we’re on his turf!

So, we’ve put together an eclectic gallery of vintage fall/winter menswear inspiration that you can use to muse, since there’s no point of running!

Sometimes a little inspiration goes a long way . . .

Soak up the inspiration! Classic looks never die. We make them new by adding our own unique spirit, so don’t ever be afraid to add yours!

{STYLE WISE} What Men Want To Buy: Rad Sweaters from 1930s Catalogs!

1930s catalogue- what men want to buy- the eye of faith vintage

What men want to buy . . .

I guess not much has changed. Like you all, I’ve been out and about searching for Xmas treasures, and I swear I saw every single one of these pieces in almost every {Present} day retail store out there! It’s really amazing.

tommy-hilfiger-fall-winter-2012-campaign1Tommy_Hilfiger_FW_2012_Ad_Campaign_1tommy-hilfiger-aw-2012-advertising-campaign-5

Tommy Hilfiger Ad Campaign 2012-13; 1930s styles relived for the ages. . .

One big difference you’ll find, however (other than the incredibly low prices of the 1930s), is the quality of these garments would be resoundingly higher than the versions you can find in stores today. That’s why I try mostly to stick to vintage on a budget, because chances are if it’s lasted all this time in great condition, it’s gonna keep delivering year after year as it has since its inception. So when it comes to sweaters go big (price-wise) or go vintage.

Ads from the 1930s are beautiful, and I just picked out a few stand-out moments that display the vivid vibrancy of the clothes you could find of this time. Would love to see a bit ore of that come back . . . but, it always does!

You just gotta hang in there.

1933

This is a tear from a German catalog dating to 1933. I’m loving the layout they’ve got going on – c’est moderne. But, I also love how the sweaters are styled. As you can see…texture is key. Not to mention, striped cardigans are still the rage!

This is from the SUPREME Lookbook for Fall 2013/14.

1930s vintage sweater inspiration- the eye of faith vintage

Check out those bold colours, and I love the pop of green in the tie. Wish you could find more sweaters with a more generous opening at the collar to display shirts as finely as Jacques does. It’s formal, but relaxed. I like this outfit quite a bit.

1930s sweater vest -german catalogue photo- the eye of faith menswear

Again, the colours of this piece are spectacular. Set against the ivory knit, all those colours almost become neutral and could virtually be worn with anything. Love the pattern of the graphics, and the intricacy of it all. Sporting a dapper watch never hurts, either. I think guys don’t sport cool sweater vest enough these days . . . so why not get inspired?

1930s mens catalogue cover- sweater- the eye of faith vintage

This guy is cool. His sweater is even cooler. This one is all about texture, not to mention details. Check out those buttons at the collar – how amazing is that?! Paired with a polka-dot tie, it goes to show that classic looks don’t need to be dull to pack a sophisticated punch. In fact, it takes a bit of panache to take it to the next level.

Now lets put our {STYLE WISE}-ness to work. This is from our {SHOP}:

il_570xN.485020080_a2dq

We’ll take the spirit of these gems and imbue them into this piece which is a vibrant reclaimed vintage sweater from the 1960s by heritage brand LONDON FOG. It really packs that punch we were talking about using colour, pattern, and texture for a refined and sophisticated garment that doesn’t shy on making a statement.

It’s all about playing your cards right in life, and the one mistake you could make is playing it safe, because you’ll just have another hundred people one-upping you from the spotlight you deserve.

Classic doesn’t mean boring. It means timeless. Just as we have shown “What Men Want to Buy” in the 1930s is pretty much the same stuff you can find now. We can take the same spirit of our inspiration of 1930s sweaters and find them in great pieces like this great LONDON FOG sweater from our {SHOP}.

If you’re {STYLE-WISE} like that, you can also save a pretty penny by investing in clothes that will stand the test of time (and your washing machine, for that matter).

Elegantly Wasted: A Trip to the 90s with Hedi Slimane for Saint-Laurent

hedi slimane- saint laurent 2013- grunge and the nineties- fall winter- elegantly wasted- vintage style inspiration- hero

When it was announced that Hedi Slimane was to take the place of Stefano Pilati as creative director of the iconic label Yves Saint-Laurent, the fashion world was left wondering what new innovations the Swiss designer could bring to the brand. Then he dropped the Yves.

That’s right. For over fifty years the brand has existed as YSL,a brand coveted for its luxury, craft, and intuition; and yet within a few moments under Slimane’s guiding eye, the brand switched from Yves Saint-Laurent, to Saint-Laurent Paris. A seemingly small change, but for fashion insiders, it seemed to represent a much grander prophecy.

Fall-Wint-2005-Dior-Homme-Ad-dior-131241_1150_821
Spr-Sum-2006-Dior-Homme-Ad-dior-131249_904_515

It should come as no surprise, however, considering Hedi Slimane is a designer who is known for being a somewhat of a revolutionary when it comes to fashion. He is the man that ushered a tidal wave of change nearly a decade ago when he was appointment menswear designer for Dior; making Dior Homme not only a coveted brand worn by celebrities from Brandon Flowers and Pete Doherty to Cate Blanchett, but seriously revolutionized mens fashion altogether. While most collections stuck to a very standard approach to mens styles, Slimane flipped it on its head exchanging boot cuts for skinny jeans, made suspenders cool, had young guys think hats are cool, wearing skinny ties, and switching their blazer for cropped motorcycle jackets.

whiteblackvotcrunwaymv3

On top of that, he single handedly changed the standard of beauty for male models, exchanging the buff All-American dreamboat for the skinny skater kid you see hanging out in the alleyway with his friends sneaking a joint and giving each other tattoos. What would have been referred to as the ‘Teenage Wasteland’ by our grandparents, has now turned into the standard ideal of luxury by fashion insiders, which you have to admit is pretty damn cool.

And if there’s anyone who knows cool its Hedi Slimane, who took a break from designing and took a dip into the realms of industrial design, exhibition design, curating, and of course his photography which he showcased on his site, the Hedi Slimane Diary.

elegnatly wasted-saint-laurent-paris-fashion-week-fall-2013-15

Now, Slimane has kicked it off with his debut menswear collection for Saint-Laurent in this latest F/W 2013 runway show, proving that he’s still got it in the bag when it comes to making mens fashion that feels fresh, cool, casual, with all the bad ass luxury of a world class rock star.

There’s plenty of vintage inspiration thrown in there too, with a definite ode to the 90s.

It’s a decadent rock n roll roller coaster of goth and grunge (very of the moment) that elevates the styles to a whole new level (being Saint-Laurent, after all). Plaid shirts, cardigans, ripped jeans, leopard print, fur coats, and oversized jackets – these are the new standards. Vive Revolution.

kurt cobain- pull the trigger- idol worship- vintage style inspiration

There’s definitely nods to the great, late, one-of-a-kind, king of sadness, rebel bad boy, Kurt Cobain in the mix. And while, we’ve seen this vintage inspiration dozens of times in the past, somehow Slimane is able to rejuvenate the look with unexpected combinations of texture, colour, pattern, and shape. And what might seem like odd styling choices, at times, only adds to the eclectic decadence.

You could even say it ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, as the anthem goes, but its more likely an invitation to  ‘Come as You Are’, when you think about it. No need to fuss or muss. Just throw it on, and march. That’s the best part for us, and the most alluring and beautiful representation of Cobain’s unique style we’ve yet to see.

river phoenix is classic cool- elegant rock n roll- who gives a fuck superstar- vintage style inspiration

river phoenix in plaid too - rock n roll style idol- vintage style inspiration

I see a little bit of River Phoenix in there, too . . . he was, of course, a forefather to that grunge look, and probably would have come to represent it even more if it weren’t for his untimely death. There’s also a little Jordan Catalano thrown into the mix . . .

elegantly wasted- jordan catalano

jordan catalano-plaid shirt realness-vintage style inspiration-elegantly wasted-saint laurent 2013

His F/W Women’s Collection is equally full of these rebel notions, and 90’s attitudes. You can spot inspiration everything from Courtney Love, ‘The Craft’, ‘Daria’, ‘My So-Called Life’, ‘Reality Bites’, ‘Poison Ivy’, Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bridget Fonda in ‘Singles’! It’s every fashionista’s dream collection, pretty much. Expect to see even more of this on the streets, and anyone who was doubting this particular breed of style, can suck it because this is Yves Saint-Laurent, baby – sorry, SAINT-LAURENT, baby!

Hats off to you, Slimane. You bring the past to life in a whole new way, and that’s what makes us love you most. You show that fashion is about reinvention as much as invention, and to look to the past and give it a new spin is about as innovative as you can get. You remind everybody that everything old is easily new again with a little bit of imagination.

Your vintage inspiration is out of this world, and you keep reinventing, not just how we dress, but yourself, in many ways, which is both aspirational and incorrigible to all those of us who call ourselves dedicated followers of fashion….

So, Merci Beaucoup. Somehow, you’ve made me feel like we’re definitely doing something right. And remember, it’s not about being perfect; it’s what makes you imperfect that really counts.

E.O.F. Weather Report {Winter 2013/14}

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What we’re working with this winter . . .

So, the weather report is in, and things look grim. Not only because the weather is near infuriatingly cold, but also because black is back. With a vengeance. Then again, when is black not a thing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

{Sage}

Stuff like that kind of bothers me, because season after season you have to hear the reiterations of what’s in and what’s not (boho, metallics, white, nautical, army)…it all comes around. It all ends up being the same. I don’t believe in these rules, and instead choose to pick an inspiration as it fancies me in the morning.

Lucky enough for me, my penchant for black lately matches up perfectly with what’s in vogue, and twenty years from now, it would still.

Now don’t go on thinking that Canada is always awash in snow and always cold. In fact, we had a very mild Fall, and just the other week it still felt like Spring. But it seems like the Gods of Winter have begun to swell, and are very quickly taking over the lands, so when it comes to getting dressed to impress, we must always remember taking care of numero uno.

Aaron Duarte- EOF Weather Report (Winter 2013:14} - Detail on Accessories

{Rings and things make an outfit look right. Hats keep the ears warm.}

Goal is not to be cold. So I usually always make sure to wear a hat. Most often a toque (even though my hair has gotten lustrously long and I wish I could show it off more :-p).

I also always carry with me a pair of gloves; usually leather, and lined in fur if you can find them. Leather gives off a chic but tough vibe, and also doubles as protection from harm (as strangers will be more prone to think you could be a potential attacker). [here’s an idea]

Above all, the main piece that brings it all together is the coat. You need a coat that is warm, but you never have to compromise on style. I like to stick to leather, as I find it the perfect barrier to the cold winds and the wetness that usually results in winter. I have two main go-tos. One is a long leather hooded trench, and the other is a vintage 1980s number that is more of a bomber style with a detachable wool collar. Either/or give me the feeling of bad-assness that is essential to keeping up my spirit in this wild weather.

Aaron Duarte- EOF Weather Report (Winter 2013:14} - selfie

{At the Hawk & Sparrow Flea}

I never shy away from bright colours, and most recently have been obsessed with finding things metallic. My favourite being, a liquidy silver number that reminds me of Kurt Cobain’s Jean-Paul Gaultier look he sports in his “Heart-Shaped Box” video.

You can also work it out with accessories. I enjoy rings and things.

But, whatever the weather one must always feel at ease

with his or her own true spirit. The one that

wakes up in the morning with you.

Kurt Russell is totally bad-ass in John Carpenter’s 1982 Horror classic, “The Thing”. Playing a scientist at a base in Antarctica who stumbles upon an ancient evil that can hide amongst humans undetected, Russell conjures some real classic conservative cool even while he battles the odds in a sub zero hell-on-earth.

It’s all about the goggles, the big hats, the poofy jackets. And remember, sun glasses aren’t out-of-bounds just because it’s cold. Let them protect you from sun glare while you shovel and feel fucking cool while you do it. Not cold, because you’ll remember to wear a good scarf, and no, your beard does not count (but do grow it).

The point is to stay warm. Pick classic pieces and you don’t ever have to worry.  Even if you have to cover everything. I feel like there’s no real rules in winter when you need to stay warm.
