GIRL, UNINTERRUPTED : A Look Back on Angelina Jolie

Gia Angelina Jolie Gia Carangi Biography-837982

Earlier today, Angelina Jolie wrote a passionate letter to the New York Times which was published online revealing that the Academy Award winning actress had gone through a mastectomy in order to avoid the risk of breast cancer in her future. The letter is a bold and beautiful move that hopes to empower others to take their health into their own hands.

A quote from the actress reveals a remarkable truth to her circumstances, which may inspire many more people to get to the very “root” of their problems. Jolie discovered she carried the dreaded BRCA1 gene (a gene known to mutate to what we know as breast cancer) and knew what she had to do to ensure living a long and happy life:

I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.

The news has sparked a lot of conversation around the world on the subject, and once again, Angelina Jolie shows a maturity and compassion for humanity that is unmatched by any other celebrity in the world. She, is also absolutely stunning. So we thought we’d celebrate her beautiful future by turning to her beautiful past and presenting to you some of the best vintage Angelina Jolie realness we could find on this side of the internet.

Who knows how this decision will change all of our potential futures?

Check out the rest of her letter to the New York Times here.

EOF Vintage Angelina Jolie Realness 3

Polaroid of a Teen Witch ? She definitely has displayed a wisdom beyond her years throughout her life, and this latest announcement takes the cake, even for her. You just can’t go wrong with the simplicity of a polaroid. There’s something so present about this moment, as if she’s still just standing right there on the other side of that glossy plastic. Even in her youth she was an icon of individuality, so for that we will always have her at our altar.

Emanuelle Riva, Mon Amour . . .

Emanuelle Riva Goes Crazy in Amour Film 2012 Michael Haneke

85-year old French movie star Emanuelle Riva, star of this year’s unapologetic future classic “Amour“, is already making history as the oldest Actress to be nominated in her category at this year’s Academy Awards, and might just be going on to make history again if she wins- making her the oldest Actress to win the Best Actress trophy ever (beating Jessica Tandy’s record back in 1990 for the film “Driving Miss Daisy” at the age of 81).

And with a surprise win at this year’s BAFTA Award (just ask David O’Russell), Ms. Riva might just be on her way to that podium to accept for this year’s Academy Awards, set for February 24. In reaction to her nomination, Riva said:

Emanuelle Riva and Jean Louis Trintignant, 2012

“I am truly happy, touched, and honored to receive, today in New York, a nomination for the role of Anne in AMOUR by Michael Haneke. For me,  it is an immense gift, at this stage of my life, to be chosen by my sisters and brothers, for what I do as an actress. I never thought,  while working throughout the years in Europe and France, that one day, i would cross the Atlantic Ocean, come to the United States, and be nominated. It is quite surreal for me.  Shooting AMOUR with Michael Haneke was a complete joy for me, as I felt an absolute trust in him and we were in complete synch. Michael is the very music of his own film.”

[Awards Daily]

The film is nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Style enthusiasts will be excited to see what Ms. Riva busts onto the red carpet come the big night. But, just because of her age, don’t count her out on making an impression. She is French, after all.

But on top of that, she is a star that has been working in the industry overseas for decades upon decades.

Hiroshima mon amour

Leave it to the Academy to wait until one of the most talented actresses there has ever been is 85 years old to garner a nomination. One of the first films that ever made a real impact on my style, and on my creative outlook was the 1959 art-house film classic, “Hiroshima, Mon Amour“, which aptly starred the beautiful blonde French bombshell (indeed, she was!).

The film was directed my Alain Resnais (“The Last Year At Marienbad“), and written by the novelist Margeurite Duras, in one of the most incredibly poetic screenplays ever written.

Emanuelle Riva and Eji okada in Hiroshima Mon Amour

Emanuelle Riva Sexy in Hiroshima Mon Amour 1959 film

The film is fascinating as it travels in and out of the streets of Hiroshima, shot after the tragedy of the Atom bomb.

The film explores an interracial romance between Emanuelle Riva, a French Actress filming a war picture and her romance with the brilliantly handsome Eji Okada, and the culture clash that surrounds them in the beautiful ruins of the sad Japanese landmark.

The film is groundbreaking for the two as Eji Okada is given an almost European sophistication, not to mention a major dose of sex-appeal (something Asian men were not given in films at this time), and Emanuelle Riva bravely explores a plethora of conditions and situations as her character explores her past.

Emanuelle Riva shows off some major chops in this film – showing a range that could only be described as Award-worthy.

Sadly, the Academy was not up to snuff with their foreign film actresses, so it’s great today to see that so many talents from around the world are accepted into the limelight of fame and stardom no matter their age or race – what matters most is talent. And by gosh, does Emanuelle Riva have that!

Emanuelle Riva - Hiroshima Mon Amour Still

She is an actress that deserves to be recognized, and whose beauty we are lucky to have been captured on film over sixty years ago . Granted, she is very beautiful still, even at 85 years of age, but it’s really great to glimpse the actress in her younger years, watching her take big risks and break huge grounds. If it weren’t for her risky performances in the past, there probably wouldn’t even be the possibility of the range we see now for female actors in the industry.

Beauty can be summed up in many ways, but most importantly, it is this attitude of unwillingness to coincide with the expectations of the norms that is the most beautiful aspect of any human being there can be.

Fingers crossed for Emanulle Riva come the big night (if not her, we’d love to see little Quevenzhane Wallis take the prize!).

Until next time!

Emanuelle Riva, Mon Amour . . .

Sincerely,

Commercial Break: Night Gallery (1970-1973)

From the creator of The  The Twilight Zone , Rod Serling, came a tv series exploring stories of horror and the macabre.  We pay homage to the nearly forgotten series that was Night Gallery.

Serling served as both on-air host of Night Gallery and was a major contributor of scripts during the series 3 season run.   But like most series that are ahead of their time, the series attracted criticism. Called out for its use of comedic blackout sketches between the longer story segments in some episodes, and for its splintered, multiple-story format, which contributed to its uneven tone.

By the final season, Serling, stung by criticism and ignored by the show’s executives, all but disowned the series.

Well, it sure was sweet while it lasted…  For those who love the series, the final and third season will be released on DVD this year, April 10th.

We Will Endure to the End

Perdurabo [Latin]:
Verb. (First-person singular future active indicative of perdūrō)

“I will endure to the End”

Aleister Crowley (Oct. 12, 1875 – Dec. 1, 1947)

These are the wise words we at The Eye of Faith have adopted for the upcoming storms, as we at E.O.F. celebrate our one month anniversary! A big thanks to our followers for bringing their great insight, great thoughts, great taste, and above all- great support!

We haven’t been able to update for a while due to the newly arrived winter chill. We knew about it’s bite, but had forgot about it’s sting! Luckily we had the proper armour and shield waiting…Couldn’t not just say a big thanks, and look forward to bringing in more thoughts, ideas, and most of all a touch of E.O.F. style, and class.

A big warm salute to A.C. up there (Aleister Crowley; occultist supreme), and his fabulous magic motto we have up for display to remind us of the fight:

The fight to keep going, the fight to pursue, and the endurance to handle it all, too. On the same note, a high-five to the big J.C. (Jesus Christ) on display there too. He likes to see the world through the crystal, because he likes to see it refract. It’s the only way to see all sides at once…

I think he could relate to Crowley’s (and our own) quest for endurance. Don’t we all?

Jessica Phyllis Lange (born April 20, 1949)

FX’s groundbreaking and highly original series American Horror Story is unlike anything I’ve ever seen for primetime television. Making it’s way to your local tube courtesy of the folk who brought us Glee, American Horror Story is a robust tale of the classic haunted house told with all the delightful twists a well accomplished horror story should take.

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck paint an image of our America as a gruesome playground for all the spirits (good and bad) to play, but never forgetting the stylish panache it takes to make it in America.

Apart from the fabulous house itself, the actors are a joy, most especially two-time Academy Award winner Jessica Lange who makes her turn as the sassy, cunning, and often caniving neighbour, Constance. In her first regular stint on television, her remarkable performance makes you wonder why she hadn’t done it sooner!

Lange has always been an actress working to sink her teeth into unique, and strong characters. Never shying from the toughest of acting challenges, Lange commands in biographical content such as Frances (1982), where she plays controversial film star Frances Farmer, and Sweet Dreams (1985), where she recounted the life of beloved country icon Patsy Cline. Both films garnered her Academy Award nominations, for which she has earned 6, winning two (Best Actress- Blue Sky (1994), Best Supporting Actress- Tootsie (1982)).

While her performance in American Horror Story isn’t elgible for Academy Award nomination, you can definitely smell Emmy while watching her play the screen with her majestic grace, insatiable voice, and signature style all coming to play in one of television’s finest performances.

Funny enough, Jessica Lange began her career as a model working for Wilhemina before she was discovered by iconic producer Dino De Laurentiis (Barbarella, Blue Velvet) to star in his latest blockbust feature- 1976’s remake of the silent classic, King Kong. While the film was a box office hit, it was virtually panned by critics. Click for a look.

Don’t worry, Jessica! Look how far you’ve come! And if you haven’t seen the show yet, get on it, because you don’t want to miss out on all the fun!

Isn’t she gorgeous, ladies and gentlemen? Let’s give her a round of applause! Comment below.
