The Future is Now! Retro 90s Sci Fi on the A/W 2018 Runways…

Back in 1999 a quirky cool show came out called ZENON: Girl of the 21st Century and now that we are actually in the 21st century its cool to see they weren’t so far off!

We always say the past informs our future, so when speaking on this idea of retro-futurism its so fun to notice visions of the future from the past, and usually in this context we speak often of a retro-future from the 40s, 50s, even 60s . . .but now we are seeing retro-future ideas taken from the 90s.

Jeremy Scott really took it there 100% with this vibe in his Autumn-Winter 2018 collection from the pastel millenial metallic palette with strokes of neon… to some really quirky weird sci-fi silhouettes.

The wigs brought me back to another 90s sci-fi gem which may be a bit more obscure unless you lived in Canada than guaranteed you watched this show if you grew up in the 90s: SPACE CASES!!!

The show first aired back in 1996, and has since stuck in our minds as a really rad adventure series featuring some cool talent. I think the plot was best summed up by Bethany on IMDB:

One day at an academy, 7 people sneak aboard a mysterious spaceship. The people consist of 5 students, who are Harlan, the athletic leader from earth; Catalina, the Saturnian rainbow-head with a sonic scream; Bova, the negative sour-pus Uranian who can generate electricity; Rosie, the happy Mercurian who radiates heat; and Radu, the Andromedan with super strength and hearing; the other two people are Mrs. T.J. Davenport, the principal at the academy and Commander Seth Goddard, who is their teacher/commander. While on-board they meet an android named Thelma who informs them that they are on a spaceship that is half living and called the Christa. Just when they meet up they become aware that they are approaching a hole that if they get sucked into, they will be stuck in space for 7 years. They eventually do and along their journey they encounter many hardships and enemies that they work together to overcome. They also meet some new people like Suzee (Catalina’s imaginary friend from another dimension who gets pulled into this dimension during a warp, putting Catalina in her dimension; she can read minds and has gills), Elmira (Sponge daughter of Warlard Shank), Warlard Shank (the arch enemy of them), etc.

Thorough analysis. Thank you Bethany.

The wigs immediately gave me some serious Jewel Staite as Catalina vibes; although, hers is just that much more with the multi-colored rings representing her home planet Saturn. Am I wrong?

Oh, and sorry about the strange captions in the two photos there. They are entertaining, nonetheless. Since it is a more obscure show, it was hard to find some great images, but I think you get the vibe, and especially with a few of the looks from Jeremy Scott’s AW 2018 show sandwiched between- I think the inspirations are undeniable!

Boy, Canadian television in the 90s was wicked…and man, Jeremy Scott’s interns must have been binge watching some serious shit, because you can’t deny that the painted ladies of Jeremy Scott’s Moschino Autumn-Winter 2018 show really give me crazy Rosie comparisons!

Granted, Jeremy Scott’s inspiration for this collection was Jackie-O, Aliens, and Conspiracy Theories so its not that far off…

Some other designers you can’t deny took a very similar route were Prada:

And, Maison Margiela Couture Autmn-Winter 2018 which was a symphony of hologram! Our jaws were dropethed watching one look after another walk down the runway.

If you have a chance, watch the actual show so you can see how magically these fabrics react to light- its magnificent and really shows the art of textile design and the incredible things being engineered today.

{Watch the Maison Margiela Couture Autumn-Winter 2018 Show}

Since we are on this topic, I wanted to throw in some pics of a few more Canadian 90s aliens from the cult show ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? – episode: “The Thirteenth Floor”!!!

Two kids get lured by stylish 90s aliens to a strange toy company that just happened to open on the 13th floor of their apartment complex where they usually play floor hockey…moral of the story is, if you think its weird a toy company opened overnight on the 13th floor of your apartment complex then just stay away!!! Especially when they’re dressed like that!

Never would I have imagined in 20 years I’d be talking about Are You Afraid of the Dark or Space Cases in the context of fashion and style…its actually kind of shocking how many designers landed on this vibe, but nevertheless its really interesting to have this kind of nostalgia prevalent in the scene, and no doubt we will be seeing more and more of this as time goes on.

The {past} repeats itself, even if that {past} is imitating the {future}!

Something about this vibe has always been in us, and we have been tending to lean towards this style many times – from metallic foil shirts, to PVC jackets, and definitely anything hologram! I guess, we like to be ahead of the curve, and it really goes to show the power in staying relevant with the past.

OPRAH’S CRUSADE AGAINST GRUNGE!

{Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage}

The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.

-Oprah Winfrey

Since the Golden Globes, Oprah is on everyone’s mind after a poignant acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony which has gone as far as having people saying “OPRAH FOR PRESIDENT!”

The model for elegant maturity and refinement for most, it has come to our attention that this Queen of the Screen really fought hard against something we totally take for granted – GRUNGE STYLE!!!

That’s right people. I think Oprah hates GRUNGE; that iconic style that emerged from the late 80s which rejected the gloss and polish of mainstream fashion for a more relaxed, tattered and easy vibe and was popularized by designers Marc Jacobs and bands like Nirvana, R.E.M, and Pearl Jam to name a few. . .

from ‘Grunge & Glory’ shot by Steven Meisel {US Vogue / c. December 1992}

Flannel plaid, cardigans, army boots, ripped jeans – you’d have to be living under a rock to not be able to characterize this style, especially considering every mainstream fashion brand from Los Angeles to Seoul are touting the trend . . .

We say it time and time again, but style is absolutely cyclical. That’s why we always promote our mantra of seeking the {past} to influence the {present} and shape the {future}. I really wonder what Oprah would be crusading against these days . . . there would definitely be plenty of material for her to draw from.

Enough said, however, let’s take a look at just how much Oprah hates GRUNGE!

Makes me wonder what she would say about Grunge now? She really seemed to be not into that. Like, when she questions those cool black leather witch boots the teenage daughter gave her Mother in her own 90s Grunge Makeover.

The worst part is – they never look better!!! I totally prefer their personal sense of style over the manufactured cookie cutter that Oprah seems to be tied to, sadly.

Fun, nonetheless! Tell us what you think in the comments below!

{WEIRD T.V.} “Silent Twins: Without My Shadow” (1994)

So, its probably safe to say we all love a break from the status-quo when it comes to what to watch . . . we are all fed the same things via Netflix, cable, etc. but sometimes you find yourself thirsting for something off the beaten path that truly quenches that need for the weird, the wonderful, and the strange!

That’s why we are starting this new series we aptly have named {WEIRD T.V.}!

We know many of you fine viewers continue to come back to our site because we aim to offer something a bit more eclectic and unique than your average blog, and have been searching the depths of the interwebs for gems dying to be rediscovered!

We’re gonna present the first video in this series, “Silent Twins: Without My Shadow” which was a BBC special that premiered in 1994 about the strange case of  June and Jennifer Gibbons AKA The Silent Twins.

The bizarre story of these twin girls from the UK first caught our eye on the vlogosphere with several Youtubers telling the strange tale, but this first-hand account includes amazing insight from doctors and journalists who followed the girls’ case since they were young, as well as their parents, and remarkable excerpts from their many journals and short stories.

We don’t want to reveal too much, because the story truly unfolds in such an odd and fantastic way that you really just have to give yourself over to this oddity of a tale.

The story is UNBELIEVABLE! So, If you need a good weird before bed something to watch – this is IT!!!

Alas, we hope you enjoy our first entry into our {WEIRD T.V.} category, and hope you come back for more!

David Jones and The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men

Young David Bowie- Hunky Dory- Long Hair

Before he was Ziggy Stardust, before he was even David Bowie – there was David Jones, a long-haired boy with big dreams and a soaring sense of the world around him.

We found this really cool clip of the young David Jones being interviewed on the BBC at only 17 discussing his foundation: The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men.

Ultimately, I feel like this clip goes to show that you don’t become a rebel, you are just born one.

It’s all got to stop! They’ve had enough! The worms are turning. The rebellion of the long hairs is on it’s way!

Long Haired David Bowie

My, how things have changed! Or have they?

What’s your take on the perception of men who have long hair?!

Destroy, Annihilate, Burn! Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” Unlocked . . .

Farenheit 451 book burning vintage cover

“Fahrenheit 451” is a classic of contemporary American literature, and is one of the most widely read and popular novels of all time.

Written by the late great Ray Bradbury (author of some of favourite reads including “Something Wicked This Way Comes” and “The Halloween Tree”), this story warns of a society where original thought and ideas are deemed dangerous, reading obsolete, and knowledge is kept under wraps.

It is a nightmare of a world brilliant captured by Bradbury’s precise prose. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, no shame (although we do recommend it), but do make a point to check out this cool breakdown of the book and its themes provided by Academic Earth, who provide some great insight into the film’s plot and themes.

What Will Happen on Mad Men Season 6?

mad men season 6 jessica pare and jon hamm

It’s been a long winter without them, but lucky for us they are back!!!

Mad Men Season 6 finally airs tomorrow night with a special 2-hour season premiere, and all of our favorites back in the swing of their slick, stylish, roller-coaster lifestyles.

So many things happened Season 5, so if you need, there is a sweet video update on the AMC website. Also, expect a lot of surprises and plenty of changes (most especially the hair-dos!).

The cast and crew haven’t revealed much, but we definitely have a ton of questions about where this season will take us, like –

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH DON DRAPER?!

Mad Men Don

Last time we saw Don he was recently married to Megan, handsome as ever, in a sweet downtown pad, and a little down on himself for his cheating ways. How will things turn out for him with that? Will it only get worse? Some shots have emerged of Don and Megan on vacation in Hawaii, but knowing their relationship, things are likely to become volatile on a dime (remember when he left Megan at the Howard Johnson?)

Definitely looking forward to seeing his new office in the brand new space they purchased at the end of last season.

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MEGAN DRAPER?!

Mad Men Megan

Megan, the vivacious, ex-secretary turned copywriter, young wife of Don Draper was last scene on the fancy set of a commercial she landed, and with her exquisite French beauty, chances are she really will make it as an actress. Or, she may just find herself floundering. Who really knows. Definitely looking forward to her new Priscilla Presley-style hair-do!

Hopefully there will be some new Zsou-Bisou, Bisou . . .

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH SALLY DRAPER?!

Mad Men (Season 5)

Last time we saw Sally she had her period, kissed a boy, and started to look and act like a really cool young woman. Let’s hope she keeps it up. Or maybe she’ll get pregnant. That would be a shocker . . .

WHAT ABOUT ROGER STERLING?!

Mad Men Roger

Last season we witnessed Roger Sterling tripping. Literally tripping – on LSD, with Angela Chases’ mom. And he pretty much took to it for the rest of the season, to the point it ripped apart his marriage with Jane. LSD is just one of those things. It didn’t seem to stop him, however, as it seemed to give him a whole new perspective on the way he looked at life. I guess, we’ll just have to stay tuned to see how this new perspective on life affects him this sixth season.

WHAT ABOUT JOAN ?!

Mad Men Joan

Last season Joan was left with a baby, and got back her job at Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Price. She had to deal with some crazy shit, but that didn’t stop this brassy ginger bombshell. Does anything ever? She seems to have secured them a pretty sweet new office space (two stories high), so there will be plenty of things (and people) for her to put into place.

WHAT ABOUT PEGGY?

Mad Men Peggy

Peggy has got herself set up at a new agency, with her own office, and higher paying salary. Everything should be good, but she still has a bit of questioning in herself going on. On top of that, her strange relationship . . . Peggy will probably one of those characters they really have fun with this season.

It’s always fun to see her make mistakes, and try to be as cool as everyone else around her.

AND WHAT ABOUT BETTY???!!!

Mad Men Betty

If anyone forgot, Betty Draper was FAT. Like fat suit, fat. Fat. Fat. Fat. She was doing weight watchers, and trying to watch what she ate, and slowly but surely she was getting a hold of her awkward eccentricities, that she had previously tried to ignore or weigh out. I think she’s gonna come back this season hotter than ever, and probably bitchier too.

Mad Men Season 6 Promo Pictures

I guess the answers to our questions are just 24 hours away, and if you want to know, make sure to tune in for the special 2-hour season premier on AMC at 9/8c ! ! !

Can’t wait to analyze and pick apart this entire new season, so stay tuned for plenty of ‘Mad Men’ goodies!

Until next time!

Sincerely,

{theEye}

Jessica Phyllis Lange (born April 20, 1949)

FX’s groundbreaking and highly original series American Horror Story is unlike anything I’ve ever seen for primetime television. Making it’s way to your local tube courtesy of the folk who brought us Glee, American Horror Story is a robust tale of the classic haunted house told with all the delightful twists a well accomplished horror story should take.

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck paint an image of our America as a gruesome playground for all the spirits (good and bad) to play, but never forgetting the stylish panache it takes to make it in America.

Apart from the fabulous house itself, the actors are a joy, most especially two-time Academy Award winner Jessica Lange who makes her turn as the sassy, cunning, and often caniving neighbour, Constance. In her first regular stint on television, her remarkable performance makes you wonder why she hadn’t done it sooner!

Lange has always been an actress working to sink her teeth into unique, and strong characters. Never shying from the toughest of acting challenges, Lange commands in biographical content such as Frances (1982), where she plays controversial film star Frances Farmer, and Sweet Dreams (1985), where she recounted the life of beloved country icon Patsy Cline. Both films garnered her Academy Award nominations, for which she has earned 6, winning two (Best Actress- Blue Sky (1994), Best Supporting Actress- Tootsie (1982)).

While her performance in American Horror Story isn’t elgible for Academy Award nomination, you can definitely smell Emmy while watching her play the screen with her majestic grace, insatiable voice, and signature style all coming to play in one of television’s finest performances.

Funny enough, Jessica Lange began her career as a model working for Wilhemina before she was discovered by iconic producer Dino De Laurentiis (Barbarella, Blue Velvet) to star in his latest blockbust feature- 1976’s remake of the silent classic, King Kong. While the film was a box office hit, it was virtually panned by critics. Click for a look.

Don’t worry, Jessica! Look how far you’ve come! And if you haven’t seen the show yet, get on it, because you don’t want to miss out on all the fun!

Isn’t she gorgeous, ladies and gentlemen? Let’s give her a round of applause! Comment below.
