{MUSIC MINUTE} The Original “Stroll” circa. February 1958

“The Stroll” was a slow rock n roll dance popular into the mid to late 1950s embraced by cool teens across America. Classic concept: boys on one side, girls on the other – the paired up couples then strut their stuff down the line. A precursor to the iconic Soul Train Line … we can’t help feel something spooky watching these teens slowly glide down the line in one of the original “strolls” captured on television.

Getting major Lynch vibes here . . . not sure exactly what it is? Perhaps it’s their eerily slow movements, and often times, complete lack of expression. Maybe its the grainy quality of the video and wondering where exactly this was filmed – the atmosphere is so strange.

But most definitely the fact that all this is but mere memory, and who knows what became of these kids or where they are now…

We might never know.

But we’d love to know what you thought, so leave a comment below!

Until next time,

FEAR AND LOATHING! 90s OUTRAGEOUS TEEN MAKEOVERS

Who doesn’t remember those wild 90s makeover episodes of trashy talk shows ?? Well apparently, this is the first thanks to the one and only Jenny Jones!!!

We get so many nostalgic feels watching these bad ass teens rep their individual style to the conservative masses who just cannot fathom a lady wearing a leather jacket to a daycare, or cut-off jean shorts, and don’t get us started on baggy clothes!!!

The best part is – all these styles have become a normal part of most people’s daily style repertoire.

Punk, grunge, gang styles, urban vibes, valley girls, hippie vibes . . . its everything that we yearn for NOW!

It’s absolutely ridiculous how people try to control you through fashion (especially when they obviously lack the knack for it). It’s insane to think how people could get so offended by what you wear!

People like that need to take a hard look at themselves and realize what they lack is their own individuality. Choosing not to travel with the pack does not make you evil, no matter how many times society is trying to tell you otherwise.

I do have to say, there is one thing these ladies need to pipe up about:

Those bitches just don’t get fashion!!!

The best part is the ladies who are so pissed AFTER their makeover into what I guess was acceptable trendy teen clothing at the time (on loan from Urban Outfitters nonetheless) – these looks are just as much in style now, also – but definitely lack the originality and zest their true selves were invoking on the day to day.

This is the cyclical nature of our realm of course – {PAST} / {PRESENT} / {FUTURE} – all the same, really. The biggest challenge really is being true.

Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Be it to the max!!! You’ll be better off that way.

I promise!

In the meantime, enjoy this crazy video and feel the outrageousness of 90s teen fashion!

Until we meet again,

Diary of a Small Town: Vintage Dreams + Nightmares {Vintage Style Moody Mood Board Inspiration}

We have quite the tale in store for you today at The Eye of Faith. . .

This one is taken from the darkest depths of our imagination and tells the hidden tales of a quaint small town, not too far from where you sit. It could be any small town, but this one is brimming with mystery, and dare I say, perhaps even evil!

Things started out innocent enough, but there are certain places on this Earth where malevolent energies cluster and stay for many thousands of years. It is in the quiet of the country, far from the claws and chains of the city, that have provided families and individuals with the peace, calm, and safety they desire.

But often times, it is the unsettling chill of calm that can provide the most fright….

Even in a town where everyone knows your name, you never know the myths and legends being made behind closed doors or the grim memories lost deep beyond the trees at night. This one is all about wayward youth, rebellion, seduction, secrets, mysteries, beauty, and strength.

Please enjoy our Small Town Dreams & Nightmares . . .

With shows like CW’s “RIVERDALE” capturing our imagination, and a new season of “TWIN PEAKS” in our midst- it goes to show that while the big city is full of brights lights and noise, sometimes its our thirst for nostalgia, the whispers in the trees, and our love of mystery that truly excites our bones!

To our vintage dreams, and  to our vintage nightmares – this one is to a town not yet forgotten. Keep the mystery close, for you never know what clues you may stumble upon. For all you know, they might still need your help.

PHOTO BLAST!!! Time Traveller’s Academy {Vintage Style Inspiration}

Hitching a Ride with Time- Young and Wild 1960 - Vintage photo

The question of time travel is a query as old as time itself.

And while science struggles to bring to the forefront the pure mechanics of it all, lucky individuals throughout the centuries have inexplicably found themselves doing the time warp.

Indeed, countless stories of men and women lost between the vortex of the past, present, and future have erupted throughout history (you might remember our story on the Time Travelling Hipster), making the questions all the more difficult to answer in the end.

Take for instance Miss Charlotte Moberly, the headmistress of an Oxford college, and her strange and most unusual tale. . .

Charlotte_Anne_Moberly

It was August 10, 1901 and Miss Moberly had taken the afternoon to visit the palace of Versailles with her good friend, Miss Eleanor Jourdan, only to curiously find themselves, while wondering through the palace’s vast and elaborately decorated corridors, beginning to see many people dress in clothes of the 18th Century – including what Miss Moberly would swear was the late, great, Marie Anotinette. They recounted feeling dreamy and depressed, and their surroundings as flat and unnatural.

Everything suddenly looked unnatural, therefore unpleasant; even the trees seemed to become flat and lifeless, like wood worked in tapestry. There were no effects of light and shade, and no wind stirred the trees.
– Miss  Charlotte Moberly

It then seems as quickly as they found themselves interacting with these ghosts of the past, they were brought back to the present day, ending off their visit with a cup of tea at the Hotel des Reservoirs, and not mentioning it again until several months later when they began to research more heavily into the incident.

No parties were booked on that day, and they found that many of the landmarks they had seen were in fact missing from the present day layout of the palace. The two would publish their tale in a book entitled An Adventure, which was released in 1911 with much praise by various Paranormal societies.

It is a mystery unsolved to this day.

The Power of Time - Egypt - Giza - Lightning Bolt Strike

Time travel used to be thought of as just science fiction, but Einstein’s general theory of relativity allows for the possibility that we could warp space-time so much that you could go off in a rocket and return before you set out.

– Stephen Hawking.

Moustaches Dont fool us anymore- time travellers academy- vintage style

This is just one of many incidents throughout history that people have claimed to somehow slip through the borders of the present to live through the past, and sometimes even the future. There are little to no explanations to how these strange events occur, and perhaps its better off there never be. This phenomenon is known as a Time Slip.

Dating back thousands of years, stories of time travellers run amuck throughout world culture, and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. Who knows how many people have taken the opportunity to slip through the sands of time, and exist completely somewhere else as someone else. How long could this last for?

With future knowledge, these individuals might be set to live their life in a much more bountiful and exuberant way by leaving the present to stake claim on the past. Perhaps this is why man has always taken interest in this idea.

I mean, what better advantage in life would you have if you could simply turn back the clock and erase your mistakes? Stop wars. Cure diseases. But where would we be now if this was to happen?

Time Travellers Academy- Dress to Impress- Shock the System - Looking Good Was Never Easier

That’s the thing about the past. We wouldn’t be without it. So to change it, could be very dangerous. . .

Maybe time is a much more powerful entity that can pick and choose as it pleases whom it takes on its journey. Perhaps like any skill, it just takes some practice and training to accomplish. One things for sure, if we were part of the Time Traveller’s Academy, we’d be doing just fine, dressed to nines, looking spiffy in all that vintage clothing the past has to offer.

That’s why we decided to look back, and make it a mission to curate some images of the initiates who may have indeed slipped through the fragile barriers of past, present, and future. For selfish reasons, or style reasons, these are our friends who have locked themselves in the realms of history. What is their mission? What do they hope to find? Will they ever be free?

Time Travelling Wisdom- DARE

That’s just another unsolved mystery.

Obsessed! Vintage Summer Style Supreme, Straight from Cannes 2013: Alain Delon’s “Purple Noon” (1960)

Vintage alain delon- your destiny is in your hands - purple noon 1960

Every year the Cannes Film Festival whips around, you can guarantee to start feeling the summer start shining on in. Just picture the French Riviera, the movie stars, the palm fronds, and sail boats. Champagne in sandals . . . the works!

It’s like a nostalgia, really. I think everyone, once in their lives will make an appearance on that legendary red carpeted staircase. At least once in our many lives, I guarantee it.

Once again, the line-up of films is quite impressive, and the movie on everybody’s lips has got to be Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring” which brings together Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Katie Chang, Isreal Broussard as the real life clique of celebrity obsessed High Schoolers who made a splash in 2009 for their wild and childlike antics.

The Bling Ring Poster

People want what they can’t have, and these kids just took it to the extreme in a whole new level. Its a lot about insecurity and acceptance, and if you get these things you might get the acceptance you are yearning for.

Kate Chang for VARIETY

Also known as the “Hollywood Hills Burglars” and the “Burglar Bunch”, Vanity Fair would publish the iconic article entitled “The Suspects Wore Louboutins” by Nancy Jo Sales in March 2010 on the cusp of the newly exposed scandal that was rocking Los Angeles by storm {click here to read the original article}.

How could a bunch of teens possibly have the know-how to break into their most worshipped and idolized celebrities (names like Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Audrey Patridge, and Orlando Bloom) and steal upwards of $3 million worth of clothes and jewelry ? Easy, really – Google. The film hopes to shed light on the perils of our society, who raise our bright and beautiful youth to become celebrity obsessed criminals. It’s all just a bit of fun, they think, until things get serious. . .

The film is getting a ton of praise for Sofia Copolla’s acute and withdrawn directing sensibilities, as well as its crisp cinematography by the late and legendary Harry Savides. However, this is not the only film to deal with the same startling themes.

Purple Noon Vintage Poster 1960

Cannes Classics brings to light  a much-too-forgotten gem of a film, 1960’s”Le Pleine Soleil” (or “Purple Noon“) directed by Renee Clement and starring original E.O.F. Style Idol himself, Alain Delon, in probably his most provocative and stylish role.

You know the story, already, I’m sure. The story of Tom Ripley – “The Talented Mr. Ripley”. It was only 14 years ago that Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law starred in the lead roles of this classic thriller. Published in 1955, and written by Patricia Highsmith, the story would be the first in a slew of novels starring the notorious anti-hero, Tom Ripley.

Dapper Devil- Alain Delon- Purple Noon (1960)

What are you trying to say? I don't look as good as you . .

“Purple Noon” would be Delon’s first big starring role, and it is what he brings to the camera that makes his performance the most magical and mesmerizing take on Mr. Ripley’s misguided eccentricities.

The film was released to relatively positive reviews, mostly for Delon’s masterful acting, but disappointed for an abrupt ending caused by studio standards of the time who refused to see a villain get away with his crimes (which is where the 1999 film comes in and wins major points).

Dont Kiss and Tell- Alain Delon- Purple Noon- Class and Identity- 1960

Tom Ripley Diary Entries - classic style seen in Purple Noon

But, nevertheless, “Purple Noon” pays off with its on-point portrayal of the casual life, style, and luxury of the comfortably rich and famous. The menswear is sublime, and almost every shot is a tour-de-force of classic Mediterranean cool.

Alain Delon as Tom Ripley - la pleine soleil 1960

Tom Ripley is a chameleon of a man who begins to live the life of another more fabulous, and more wealthy man, and the best part is (for Ripley, least), this other man had a real knack for really great style. The rings, the loafers, the shirts, the jacket, the hair – it’s enough to make Daisy Buchanan break down in tears! How could he not want to take over this guy’s life?

This is the frightening paradox embedded within this maddeningly modern mystery.

When in doubt raid the closet of a discerning and wealthy friend

“He loved possessions, not masses of them, but a select few that he did not part with. They gave a man self-respect. Not ostentation but quality, and the love that cherished the quality. Possessions reminded him that he existed, and made him enjoy his existence. It was as simple as that. And wasn’t that worth something? He existed. Not many people in the world knew how to, even if they had the money. It really didn’t take money, masses of money, it took a certain security.”

-Patricia Highsmith, “The Talented Mr. Ripley”

Trying on all these clothes was tiring indeed - alain delon- purple noon 1960

Vintage Style Classic - Purple Noon 1960- Alain Delon- Idol Worship-EOF

Alain Delon as Tom Ripley- La Pleine Soleil Vintage

Take a look back and you can spot straight off the bat the timelessness of it all. It’s a film like “Purple Noon” that will stick in your memory forever, and become a staple repertoire of how you want to dress this summer: clean, cool, casual, and elegant. Those are just some keywords to keep in mind when venturing into these cool dark waters.

And even to a certain degree, become someone else if you have to. Moving through the streets with your cool clean shades on, feel the mystery embody you, and take to the streets like you’re about to buy them.

“Anticipation! It occurred to him that his anticipation was more pleasant to him than the experiencing.”

-Patricia Highsmith, “The Talented Mr. Ripley”

Moocher, Musician, Madman; Tom Ripley is an enigma in many respects, which makes him all the more powerful in his sinister quest. His behaviour can be criticised, but also, he can be completely understood.

Who doesn’t want that easy life? The life of luxury and ease that you read about in the magazines, filled with all those expensive clothes, and beautiful women. Think about if you had the chance to exchange your life for someone else’s. . . would you?

Get your jacquard on

Vintage style rebellion- shirtless alain delon- Purple Noon 1960

The teens that formed “The Bling Ring” would have to agree, and are a mighty monument to the same themes portrayed in “Purple Noon”.

Isn’t it scary to think that over 50 years later, the same anxieties that were fiction, have now come full circle and are as real as ever. Patricia Highsmith was definitely onto something, so if you want to get a head start on the entire thought process make sure to check out “Purple Noon” this summer, and maybe rock the Ripley edge (minus the murder).

Music Minute: “Egyptian Shumba” by The Tammys

the tammys- vintage newspaper clipping

Word on the street is The Tammy’s are regarded as one of Girl Group history’s greatest treasures.

You may not have heard of them, but you’re not to blame, as this is just one of their remarkable gems they managed to leave behind for us all to hear. In fact, this single was all but lost until being found again at the beginning of this century.

“In the spring of 1964, it peaked at #30 on Cleveland rock music surveys, and #15 in Pittsburgh. It was popular at high school and college dances throughout the Midwest, but somehow never made it onto the national charts…”

This is one HELLUVA ride so make sure you’re ready to take this boundary defying and strange, weird, intensely out of this world experience known as “Egyptian Shumba” – an absolute favourite that totally goes with the jist of this place…

Stunning “CARRIE” Trailer Finally Uncovered! Plus I Dare You To Call Carrie White . . .

Finally! The moment we have all been waiting for is here! After months have simply have to watch the excruciating teaser showing Carrie’s entire town burning to the ground showing a blood-drenched Chloe Moretz out of control pissed at being bully bait at her prom, we finally have a legit, sold, 100% certified trailer for the film that also stars Julianne Moore as Mrs. White – Carrie’s maniacal, fanatic, evangelical mother driven to hysterics by her daughter’s blossoming psychic powers. . .

It’s a relief to know that this film is going extra lengths to really respect both the 1976 original, starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie as the terrifying mother-daughter duo), but also the novel that started it all, and kick-started Stephen King’s career as the world’s most popular author. And this version seems to be the perfect synthesis between the past, present, and eventually future of “Carrie”.

The film is excitedly updated to today, taking a contemporary spin on the story, allowing the creative team to touch on very real topics of cyber bullying and harassment in teen culture today. It’s no surprise really, considering the film is helmed by world-class director Kimberly Pierce who previously led Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny to Oscar nominations (and Hilary the win) for the 1999 classic, “Boys Don’t Cry”.

Carrie-poster-2013-version3

When “Carrie” was released in 1976, it sealed the deal for Sissy Spacek, and there’s no questioning the fact that Chloe Moretz has now sealed the deal on her fate, as well. The film has been pushed back to a later release date of October 18, from its original March release date (damn it!), which could be a good sign that this film is in contention for some big award coverage, and at least a smash hit for Halloween – probably both, though. After all, Julianne Moore is one of those actresses that should have already won an Academy Award in her life – so it’s only a matter of time, and “Carrie” could be it.

Same goes for Chloe Grace Moretz, who might be young, but considering Jennifer Lawrence’s recent win at the Academy Awards for Best Actress at the age of 22 – the chances don’t seem that unlikely for a star as consistent and talented as the young Chloe Grace . At the very least, a nomination will most likely be awarded.

carrie2013

But until that fateful day, the film’s marketing team seems to have set up plenty of goodies to get your “Carrie” fix until that bright, shiny day. You can check out the film’s Official Site here for downloads and other stuff, and be sure to visit YOU WILL KNOW HER NAME , the film’s uber imaginative Tumblr site that harks back to the film’s epistolary novel roots.

And if that’s not enough for you, you can literally call Carrie!

That’s right. You can call Carrie White at her home, The White Residence at: 207-404-2604.  Sounds freaky, but it’s true! You can call at receive any one of three recorded messages. Try it out if you don’t believe us, or listen below . . .

Between this film, “Stoker, and “The Great Gatsby” coming out this May – 2013 is already adding up to a really exciting year for film, and films that are infusing the past with all the excitement and innovation of today!

Hope you’re excited! Don’t piss off Carrie!
