E.O.F. STYLE IDOL: Speak of the Devil! Kenneth Anger’s Fornication with Fashion!

portrait of kenneth anger

Well, well…what have we here? Come back for some more?!

While we’re on the topic of Devils, it seems, we couldn’t resist bringing you this little niblit of the Film & Style Divine. Kenneth Anger. From “Invocation of My Demon Brother”, to “Fireworks”, “Lucifer Rising” , “Scorpio Rising”, and “Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome” – this auteur to the max has brought to the world an esoteric, rebellious, and divine sensibility to all of his works.

Inspiration we are still reaping today! Take for instance, Ryan Gosling’s iconic gold satin jacket with scorpion on the back in 2011’s “Drive” – it was Kenneth Anger’s “Scorpio Rising”, an experimental film made by Anger in 1963 about bikers, the occult, the underground, Catholicism, and Nazism that inspired the logo that would become synonymous with Gosling’s “Driver” character.

Kenneth Anger- Scorpio Rising- Detail

Throughout his work you can see his love for cinema, for art, for style, for fashion, for creative people that don’t see the world the way other people do. People who gather together to be the truest, and most extreme versions of themselves they can be. It takes a true creative mastermind to bring that into fruition.

Blending the world of the occult with pop culture and art-house cinema, Anger’s films are all one-of-a-kind, kaleidoscopic dreams (and sometimes nightmares).

Scorpio Rising- Dandy

Anger_Invocation

For instance, take “Invocation of My Demon Brother” from 1969. With music by Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones Mick, Yes), and cameos by some of 1960s California’s most notorious esoteric celebrities including Founder of the Church of Satan, Anton LaVey (making yet another appearance here at EOF), and Bobby Beausoleil (later charged in committing a first degree murder with members of the “Manson Family ).

Invocation of My Demon Brother” is a rare glimpse into a dark underground world, as well as a visual poem to the horrors of War, humanity, and nature itself.

There’s nothing really to be scared of here. Just a bunch of Hocus-Pocus…Movie MAGIC, if you will. It’s really lucky to recieve an entire commentary on the film by the artist himself, as there are not many interviews with the often recluse director.

Anger usually centres his work on ideas of the divine, spiritual, decadent, sexual, and supernatural. The now 86 year old auteur (Happy Belated! His birthday was February 3)  got his start in the glorious heydays of Hollywood Babylon itself, as the Changeling Prince in Max Reinhardt and William Dieterle’s 1935 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

Having seen the ins and outs of Hollywood and such a young age- a land full of magic, glamour, decadence, and of course, EVIL – it is fantastic to invite yourself into a Kenneth Anger piece, as you can always leave from it feeling a certain “je ne sais quoi”, as the French would say.

The French, and Europe in general, have always lauded this Prince of Darkness for his unique dark styles, as well as humor (yes, Humor!). Though it took upward of 40 years (40 YEARS!!!), the Fashion World finally seemed ready to let out a little Anger, and the American Auteur was given the helms of a short fashion video for Missoni’s “A/W 2010-2011.

We’re having that “je ne sais quoi” type of feeling again, how about you? If you want to learn more about the dark Prince of style you can visit his official website here. And to buy his masterworks, click here.

+STYLE STAR+ El Principe Gitano, JJ Reyes !

style star jj reyes 3

The stars in the sky will shine bright tonight knowing that we pay tribute to one of their brightest young consorts. As we are always expressing here at The Eye of Faith, style is about the attitude, and bringing a truly individual edge that will set you apart from the rest, and the +STYLE STAR+ we have chosen this week invokes all these attributes and more.

JJ Reyes is a talented style savant from Seville, Spain, showcasing his passion for things fashion on his personal style blog El Principe Gitano. On top of JJ’s ultra rad and sophisticated take on style, his site is a beautiful escape to some of Spain’s most iconic and beautiful landmarks.

This handsome Gypsy Prince took the time to let us pick his brain on his unique style, the things he loves most, and the future seen through his most exceptional and unique eye!

First, a bit of an introduction to yourself. What is your name, and what do you do?

My name is JJ Reyes, I am studying Advertising & PR in Seville (Spain), where I live. I have a fashion blog titled ‘The Gypsy Prince’ (http://www.elprincipegitano.com) that I opened a year ago. It has more than 50.000 visits, with the intention of sharing a virtual space to show my ambitions, concerns, places, pleasures and even the people who usually are next to me.

I am in love with everything about fashion and trends, a passion I show weekly on the blog through my different looks. I am also working as a DJ and model.

What would be your earliest fashion memory, and has it played a part in leading you to your fashion future?

I don’t think I will ever give an answer to this question, since I have no clear memory of fashion in my childhood. However, I can assure you it wasn’t until 14 years old when I began to focus my attention on fashion, which led me to an evident change of style in my early teen years.

When you wake up in the morning, what thoughts go through your mind while picking out your outfit for the day?

I always have in mind a specific garment that I want to wear, just that one. The other garments that go with it appears in my mind while I am standing in front of the closet. Obviously, the weather is an important element when I am choosing what I’m going to wear.

Do you have any go-to inspirations or style idols you look up to in your own style?

I don’t. I just want to have something from these three groups: 90s, Bloggers and Disney. I want the camera equipment of Chiara Ferragni, I want Pocahontas’ black long hair and I also want to make love to 90’s Kate Moss and Johnny Depp couple. I really think that my own style is the mix of random elements that apparently have no sense together to create the perfect look.

What has been your most important lesson in life when it comes to your own personal brand of style?

Biggest lesson in fashion life is undoubtedly swimming at the middle. The best thing is to stay there, between austerity and excess.

Where are your favourite go-to spots to go for killer fashion and style?

I am a big fan of Spanish brand ZARA. It gets to you every single huge prèt-a-porter trend from the catwalk to their worldwide stores.

You’re walking down the street and stumble upon a time portal that will take you anywhere you want to go in the history of time. Where do you decide to take it, and why?

90s. I want to make love to Kate Moss and Johnny Deep couple.

Here’s a fun one. You’ve accidentally conjured up an angry spirit who won’t get the hell out of your closet. You want to call the cops, but you know they won’t believe you so you pull out your exorcism kit and go to work. What is the one thing you are hoping to save from your wardrobe?

Doc Martens boots, I can’t live without them.

What is the worst fashion advice you’ve ever heard or been given?

The worst fashion advice is when your friend is tired of shopping with you and put on her “It’s okay, it fits you well’’ face when you are trying some clothes, because all that she wants is you to buy those fucking jeans so she can leave the store.

Any thoughts of the future of mens fashion and/or fashion in general, through the eyes of J.J. ?

Skirts. A Texas conservative man wearing a Givenchy skirt, that could be a great accomplishment for men’s fashion industry in the future.

{Let’s do the Time-Warp Again} Best of the 80’s in Menswear Spring 2013

The best fashion is timeless, so no surprises here at the Eye of Faith we are always trying to reinvent the classic’s through modern interpretations of the best basics!  We love to pick out different era’s and reference those ‘era-descent’ influences in our current looks.  We are so happy to see the latest runway shows from around the world are straight up our alley!

From London-town, to Paris and Milan, there is an undeniable 80s influences in most of the shows from this coming Spring 2013 Season.

Weather it’s through unconventional Metallics or lace, or acid washed hair, dyed to perfection.  We love when we can see the past turn it’s cheek and rock it’s way into a jagged-edged future.

A wise man once said “Everything’s already been done”, but we hate to think there isn’t room for anything new at all! We aren’t talking about reinventing the wheel here, but we do miss the days of David Bowie’s gender bending orange head of hair, and Billy Idol’s undeniable sexual swagger.

The greatest idols of the 80s are back in a big way, and all their razzle and dazzle is back on display though the Spring 2013 Menswear season (Through you’d swear this might be 1983).

Staring with one of our all-time favourites, Burberry Prorsum is always classic at it’s finest, with Christopher Bailey at the helm, we are always captivated by his modern spin on tradition.  Described as an exercise in contrasts, this Spring collection has a bit of everything—matte versus shine, traditional versus tribal, strict versus oversized. Mylar-esque metallic trench coats and shiny silk shirts play off the brand’s fitted wool suiting. Classic outerwear pieces evolve as well, with Bailey interpreting mac jackets in the new fabrications and turning the classic bomber into a cropped cocoon, worn over a business suit. Bailey explores new territory, while keeping one well-burnished foot firmly planted in the house’s heritage.

Anne Demeulemeester always kills it for us, with a spin at modernist edgy, and classic vampire fashion.  What’s more nostalgic of the glam decadence of the 80s than gothic-chic suiting, and lush fabrics fit for Royalty.  Running the gamut from solids to stripes to prints, and relaxed silhouettes, Ms. Demeulemeester’s spring collection seethes with a dark-prince edge—indeed.  From Prince to Keith Richards, any rock star, past and present, would rock these looks on stage.

Comme des Garçons always has been an absolutely innovative brand season after season, so no surprises here that they would take influence straight from the Laboratory.  So maybe the nod to 90s cartoon Dexters Laboratory isn’t so totally 1980s, but you can’t deny us the bold black and whites and orange coloured hair are straight out of a 80s hair catalogue in the best possible way (Annie Lennox anyone?!).  Every look included matching trouser-and-shirt combos with topcoats: in sterilized white, pinstriped, with toggles, or with doodled print panels, with a slender silhouette billowing down below the waist.  Menswear at it’s finest, Dexter’s Laboratory‘s eponymous kid genius would be proud.

After that, we want to run out to the nearest vintage store, and try to scrounge up some pieces that will elevate us to an 80’s icons level!  If you need us we’ll be Dancing with Ourselves, and watching every season of Jem and the Holograms.

We hope you’ve found inspiration in our recap of the latest show’s, with a touch of the past. Remember even if it’s ‘been done’, we know it can be done better! The 80s wouldn’t of been possible without the emblematic era’s that came before.  Honour the past, present and future!
