+E.O.F.+ LEGENDARY ISSUES No. 1

This week, we bring to you a set of most legendary fashion publications from the past 10 years. Legends are made everyday, and in the fashion industry, magazines are like Bibles on who to worship, and ideas are permeating throughout the scene.

For years we have collected some of the world’s most coveted publications for knowledge, inspiration, and for the chance to watch the timeline of fashion play out before your eyes. Everyone’s got to start somewhere, and some of today’s biggest fashion icons owe their notoriety to the photo shoots captured in these magazines.

We wanted to showcase these works for their superior craftsmanship and innovation, and also show off the timeline of fashion history right under our noses.

This issue of POP MAGAZINE from September 2008 will be the first of our LEGENDARY ISSUES.

POP Magazine - Naomi Campbell - September 2008

Featuring Naomi Campbell on the cover, styled by Miucci Prada herself, this cover marks a transition in fashion to a streamlined romanticism, marked by Prada’s 2008 revival of lace. This trend has since become ever popular for both women and men since.

The cover says “HOT NUNS” right on it, and boy do the people at POP really go the distance with this one. Entitled “NUN HEADS”, the beautiful fashion editorial showcases a strange interwoven tale of nuns in heat.

It’s nearly as provocative as Ken Adam’s “The Devils”, but pulls out all the stops to make it as fresh and fashion forward as ever. Starring Angela Lindvall, Guinevere Van Seenus, Missy Rayder, and Magdelena Frackowiak – this shoot is a powerful editorial that is legendary and iconic to this day. The nun inspiration also had a huge impact on the fashion world, in general, and really got a huge kick start with these images.

Shoots like that alone, are why you buy a magazine! But on top of that, there are plenty more shoots with stars like Amber Valletta and Naomi Campbell, herself. One of the highlights of the issue is a beautiful story shot by Ryan McGinley featuring Agyness Deyne jumping off of fire escapes in the snow. Beautiful.

And on the style knowledge front, the issue provides a beautiful summary and history of legendary Hollywood costume designer Adrian, who designed some of the most glamorous and iconic looks of the 1930s and 40s.

Magic Movie Moments: Powell + Pressburger’s “Black Narcissus”

+

“I don’t want to go away. I want to stay here like this for the rest of my life…”

+

Michael Powell + Emeric Pressburger’s 1947 film Black Narcissus is crammed full of magic movie moments – moments unlike any other you are bound to see in any other film.

Moments where you would swear, instead of a movie, you might actually have stumbled upon an epic painting come to life, or perhaps you caught yourself awake in a dream.

The film is set high in the cliffs of the Himalayan mountains where a group of five nuns have sequestered themselves to begin an order in this strange new land. Nothing ever seems to go quite as planned for these seeker’s of God who exhibit more than their true colors in their time spent trying to maintain and repair their adapted home.

It is a story of human will and sacrifice (as most stories with nuns are), as well as examining the cultures of Christianity, and Western beliefs and attitudes. The film also explores spirituality (as most stories with nus do) to a large extent, and the various ways in which almost supernatural forces come to play in our daily lives.

Despite being over 60 years old, the film’s unconventional themes and characters carry it straight into the 21st Century and beyond. In fact, we’d be very lucky to receive a film with as much intellect, suspense, and overall beauty in this day and age…Powell + Pressburger never ceases to impress me, but there definitely is an undeniable touch of magic and mystery that make this film an absolute great.

Jack Cardiff’s dynamic cinematography is definitely a major contributing factor to the film’s devastating beauty. Like a canvas, Cardiff paints every frame with an attention to detail only a true artist could bring, upping the ante for the film altogether. As much as the light paints the scene, Cardiff uses shadow and color to exquisite effect.

“There’s something in the atmosphere that makes everything exaggerated…”

+

Enjoy this clip of the film’s epic climax if you dare…and don’t be afraid of the haunted feeling you may achieve. It’s actually quite refreshing.

We were lucky enough to catch this on TCM‘s queue of timeless and obscure movie classics, but you can also find Powell + Pressburger’s Black Narcissus available on DVD & Blu-Ray through the Criterion Collection packed full of amazing extras. Check it out today.

{Photoblast} Holy Fashion -Our Holy Grail.

We’ll say a lil’ prayer for you during this Photoblast.  Some symbolism you may recognize, some sights should be new! We’re feeling nostalgic for holier times… Although we’re certain we’d be burned as a Witch!

Thank our goodness, we are alive today to bring you some inspiration to say a little prayer for us! Let us be saved from this unholy hell, and bless’d our soul for whose past we grieve, but who’s future is shining and bright!

We’re sure the pearly gates are more beautiful in Death than any sights on this land, but we’d be lying if we acted as if we didn’t adore seeing Faith in Fashion and splendor in this land.

Sometimes controversially cliche, we don’t get too bored when it comes talk of God and Jesus Christ. We’ll turn our cheek and listen to the street and love what fashion houses are turning out.  We do love throwing on a wide brimmed black hat, Rosary and grabbing a Crucifix for a danced filled night out!

Thankfully we know what’s good fun, and what will get us into trouble.  We may have a Dark Side, but for heaven’s sake, we’re not Demonic! We trust our Angels to guide us along in every bold decision and choice.  And you can trust in The Eye of Faith to Graciously Guide you through the coming days.

Together we shall roam, we shall reach deliverance! Where would we be if it weren’t for our terrific readers? Follow the Eye, and no angel or demon would deny you of being a true divinity.
