Music Minute: Ghosts – Japan (1981)


While sitting in our favourite local cafe, Cool Hand of a Girl,  we heard a favourite melody and it reignited our love of gothic new-wave (Not that we’re saying the flame ever went out). We were in fact listening to Japan.

Forming in 1974, it would be this band from South London who’d help usher in NewWave.  Achieving success in the late 1970s, early 1980s, they have been cited as an important influence on 1980s synthpop bands such as Duran Duran and Camouflage.
They would forever be associated with the ‘New Romantic ‘ fashion movement, an association which would always be denied by Japan.

In the early 80s, the group would garner their most notable success with “Ghosts“.  From the 1981 album ‘ Tin Drum, it reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart in 1982.   Although it was their biggest hit, this was not enough to stop the band splitting only a few months later.

Close Up: “Mad Men” Season 5 – Ties, Rings, and Things

They always say: “God is in the Details” and every time there is the opportunity to watch AMC‘s pinnacle of television drama, “Mad Men” we are boldly reminded of this fact! So here goes our “Close Up” of some of the ties, rings, and things the men are wearing this season.

Five episodes into the long awaited fifth season (almost a year and a half!) and Matthew Weiner and his talented team have already lifted the bar, and continue to raise it as the seconds count down on each new episode.

Full of all the racism, sexism, cigarette smoking, adultery, feminism, and homophobia that characterizes the era, Mad Men has made success from context and exploited it against our own. It’s fun to see the evolution of the characters, changing or not changing with the ticking of the clock.

The men of Sterling Cooper Draper Price (Say that three times fast) haven’t much changed, but the evolution is there in their wardrobe. We are beginning to see the times liberating the characters and their style. There is a casualness, a cool that stemmed in America from the Beat movement, and an undeniable pull from the European art flicks of Fellini and the French New Wave.

Speaking of French New Wave, we have the bright return of talented Canadian actress Jessica Paré as Megan, Don’s new 20-something wife. Pare is such a talent; so charismatic, and just strikingly gorgeous. She had her screen debut in Denys Arcand’s “Stardom” where she played a normal Canadian girl who becomes a high fashion supermodel. [FASHION LOVERS WATCH TRAILER]

On the other end of the scale, Betty is still around residing in her “haunted mansion” (a grim corner property definitely rivaling the Gothic grandeur of the house in American Horror Story ) with her politician husband, and three children. With a house that big, it’s no surprise Betty is feeling engulfed by this new marriage.

Everyone is worried about her, mostly because she’s fat.  Compared to the dainty used to be model Grace Kelly look-a-like, this Betty is shocking. It’s really fun to see her like this, though. Count on an Emmy Award for those prosthetics! Absolutely Freaky! My guess is she’ll stay this way for a while.

One of the other delights is definitely Sally Draper. She’s no little girl anymore. She’s in that fantastic age where your mind is opening to different facets of the life that surrounds you. Growing up is hard, and I’m guessing this isn’t going to come naturally to her. Especially between homes, the dynamic between her parents is definitely straining, and she’s managed to pick up some angst and attitude from them on the way.

Vanity Fair‘s James Wolcott made his case for T.V. over the movies of today in a recent article:

As movie theaters switch from film to digital projection, home flat-screens take up a wall, Blu-Ray discs exhume masterpiece-painting volumes of color and intricate detail from popular releases, and the unholy moviegoing experience cries out for human-pest control, cinema has lost its sanctuary allure and aesthetic edge over television, which as a medium has the evolutionary advantage. Movies will never die, not as long as a director like Terrence Malick can make every green blade of grass sway like the first dance of creation, but TV is where the action is, the addictions forged, the dream machine operating on all cylinders. As I write this, the Academy Awards are a few days away, with The Artist the odds-on best-picture winner. Does anyone think The Artist is better than Mad Men?

I guess everyone knows the answer to that… And if this season is any proof, Wolcott is definitely onto something! Mad Men indeed transports you, and the best part is it doesn’t ask you to go any farther than your living room to take a trip through time.

Mad Men is truly such a treat. It is really the perfect dichotomy of performance, writing, and production. After an episode, or entire day, there are definitely a million things you can take away. For a true vintage nut, this latest season of Mad Men is off to a great new start, and it’s hard to get enough!

E.O.F. Style Idol – Alain Delon

Upon a recent viewing of “Rebel Without a Cause” it completely struck us at E.O.F. that there was a certain style divinity that doesn’t recieve enough attention for his incredible panache, and undoubted influence on men’s style and fashion. Call him France’s own James Dean– Alain Delon may just write the books on how to be a truly stylish and effortless specimen of a man.


In history, the legend of James Dean was born on the faithful day of September 30, 1955 causing an international frenzy- and in moments, an idol of rebellion and male beauty was born that seemingly grows stronger everyday. There is no doubt, the rebel icon has paved the way, but it is an individual like Alain Delon who triumphantly carried the torch onward. And while James Dean’s memory lives on, this week’s profiled style star literally lives.

It’s everything to do with everything; his French charm, a je na sais quois, that particular brand of swag and easiness the French seem to bring to anything. Whether dolled up in a suit, or stripped down to the bone, Delon delivers his unique brand of masculinity. Perhaps it’s all in the eyes. People always seem to look better smoking cigarettes.

Dean was an eagear student of Sade, as should be any fallen angel-boy, but it seems Delon took a more jovial path in life following more in the footsteps of Casanova! He worked the screen with leading ladies like Marianne Faithful, Jane Fonda, and Brigitte Bardot. Better than that, his real-life romances were with some of the world’s most gorgeous faces- Romy Schneider, Mirielle Darc, Rosalie Van Breeman, Nathalie Barthelemey, and a love-child with none other than Nico herself. Quite the busy boy.



Discharged from the navy in 1956, Delon would be discovered by legendary producer David. O. Selznick (Yes, of ‘Gone with the Wind’ lore) who would kick off his career provided he learn English. Delon would stay in France and in 1960 would star  in a dandy adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’, in a French picture by the name of “Purple Noon”.

This film is one of the singularly most stylish films you might come across when it comes to men’s fashion. Delon’s Ripley is a tour-de-force in quiet angst and alienation, not to mention practically picture perfect, and would pave his way in the limelight as one of the world’s most enigmatic and dashing leading gentlemen.

The dapper Delon would continue to grace the screen in other groundbreaking and style-wise pictures as Luchino Visconti’s “The Leopard”, Michelangelo Antonionni’s “Eclipse”, Jack Cardiff’s “The Girl on a Motorcylce”, Jacques Daray’s “Le Piscine”, Louis Malles’ , Roger Vadim’s, & Fellini’s “Spirits of the Dead”, and of course, the ultimate embodiment of loner, drifter, outsiderness in Jean-Pierre Melville’s “Le Samourai”, a dark crime film fusing film noir with samurai and fantasy notions. Each film is rich in style inspiration and fashion and film history.


Delon was an instant smash and a puller of all heart strings. With his dashing looks, and unapolgetic demeanour, his rebel attitude gave French luxury a brand new flavour, as well as giving us here at the EOF plenty of amazing pictures to share with you! Use these as inspiration for a lifetime.

Keep it classic, keep it fresh, and keep it fun inside. Adapt a closet full of leisure, that make you feel comfortable, while at the same time easily make you the Prince of the Party. The secret to Delon’s success really lies deep within his own core. An unwillingness to be anything but true to himself. That is ultimately what reads through most, and is an important lesson to being the ultimate you.

So rent all his movies today, and show the world how dashing, dapper,  and ultimately divine a bad boy can really be! As an E.O.F. Style Idol, Alain Delon’s timeless style is  definitely here to stay.
