Patti Quatro is HOT - EOF Style Divinity

We’ve always had a thing for Patti Quatro.

The statuesque brunette of the classic Detroit girl group, The Pleasure Seekers, and sister to Suzi Quatro, Patti is a triumphant figure who put the power of beauty, style, and girl power to the forefront of our culture, and helped propelled the things we take for granted in our contemporary world.

Thank the heavens for E.O.F. correspondent John Wisnewski, who got the chance to ask this Girl Group maven some questions about her captivating life.

 

JOHN: What was the first band that you were in, Patti?

PATTI:First band I was in was The Pleasure Seekers, started in 1964 when I was 16 years old and Suzi was 14, in Detroit Rock City. We grew our talent jamming with all our home boys…..Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, MC5, Alice Cooper, Iggy, etc…….all honing our craft as we played the teen circuits together.

JOHN: When did you join Fanny?

PATTI: Joined Fanny in 1973 at Xmas time…….first gig was the Whiskey at which John Lennon saw our debut, and we did “Oh Darling” for him.

JOHN: Patti, Fanny paved the way for future female fronted groups-  does Fanny receive recognition for this?   

PATTI: All our roots bands receive recognition constantly from magazines, interviews, fans, etc…..people who appreciate us forging the road for women.    Actually, Suzi and I started the earliest at 14 and 16 in Detroit……earliest heavy rocking all female band…1964.   Others started later, and were more soft/girly sounding.

We had that Detroit grit energy from growing up jamming with Nugent, Alice, Iggy, MC5,Seger, etc. We all paved the way…..me and my sister and our roots bands, as well as Fanny. Suzi and I and our bands were recognized in Detroit/Michigan’s Hall of Fame awards last year and the year before.

Hopefully Fanny will be at some point. But, Suzi has had more than a few honours for her contributions.

JOHN: Have yourself and Suzi Quatro ever played any live appearances together?
PATTI: We just played together when she was awarded her woman of valor award from MEOW in March….a huge conference here in austin, Tx and we played together for first time since 1990’s.

JOHN: Of all the performers and artists that you knew, were there any that you were very impressed by?

PATTI: Bob Seger — his humility, songwriting talent.

Jeff Beck — his pure joy of his instrument and support of women musicians in an era when women did not rock guitars and till today.

Jimmy Page — his enormous creativity on his instrument — pure talent.

JOHN: Could you name some of your favorite bands, Patti?
PATTI: Nickelback, Jeff Beck, Zeppelin, Joe Cocker, Halestorm, Gary Moore . . .

Hitching a Ride with Time- Young and Wild 1960 - Vintage photo

The question of time travel is a query as old as time itself.

And while science struggles to bring to the forefront the pure mechanics of it all, lucky individuals throughout the centuries have inexplicably found themselves doing the time warp.

Indeed, countless stories of men and women lost between the vortex of the past, present, and future have erupted throughout history (you might remember our story on the Time Travelling Hipster), making the questions all the more difficult to answer in the end.

Take for instance Miss Charlotte Moberly, the headmistress of an Oxford college, and her strange and most unusual tale. . .

It was August 10, 1901 and Miss Moberly had taken the afternoon to visit the palace of Versailles with her good friend, Miss Eleanor Jourdan, only to curiously find themselves, while wondering through the palace’s vast and elaborately decorated corridors, beginning to see many people dress in clothes of the 18th Century – including what Miss Moberly would swear was the late, great, Marie Anotinette. They recounted feeling dreamy and depressed, and their surroundings as flat and unnatural.

Everything suddenly looked unnatural, therefore unpleasant; even the trees seemed to become flat and lifeless, like wood worked in tapestry. There were no effects of light and shade, and no wind stirred the trees.

It then seems as quickly as they found themselves interacting with these ghosts of the past, they were brought back to the present day, ending off their visit with a cup of tea at the Hotel des Reservoirs, and not mentioning it again until several months later when they began to research more heavily into the incident.

No parties were booked on that day, and they found that many of the landmarks they had seen were in fact missing from the present day layout of the palace. The two would publish their tale in a book entitled An Adventure, which was released in 1911 with much praise by various Paranormal societies.

It is a mystery unsolved to this day.

This is just one of many incidents throughout history that people have claimed to somehow slip through the borders of the present to live through the past, and sometimes even the future. There are little to no explanations to how these strange events occur, and perhaps its better off there never be. This phenomenon is known as a Time Slip.

Dating back thousands of years, stories of time travellers run amuck throughout world culture, and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. Who knows how many people have taken the opportunity to slip through the sands of time, and exist completely somewhere else as someone else. How long could this last for?

With future knowledge, these individuals might be set to live their life in a much more bountiful and exuberant way by leaving the present to stake claim on the past. Perhaps this is why man has always taken interest in this idea.

I mean, what better advantage in life would you have if you could simply turn back the clock and erase your mistakes? Stop wars. Cure diseases. But where would we be now if this was to happen?

That’s the thing about the past. We wouldn’t be without it. So to change it, could be very dangerous. . .

Maybe time is a much more powerful entity that can pick and choose as it pleases whom it takes on its journey. Perhaps like any skill, it just takes some practice and training to accomplish. One things for sure, if we were part of the Time Traveller’s Academy, we’d be doing just fine, dressed to nines, looking spiffy in all that vintage clothing the past has to offer.

That’s why we decided to look back, and make it a mission to curate some images of the initiates who may have indeed slipped through the fragile barriers of past, present, and future. For selfish reasons, or style reasons, these are our friends who have locked themselves in the realms of history. What is their mission? What do they hope to find? Will they ever be free?

Music Minute: “I Was A Teenage Creature” by Lord Luther


Lord Luther aka Luther McDaniels was born in Panola County Texas and started singing gospel at an early age.

In the mid 50’s he started a Doo Wop group,  The Four Deuces. Based out of California, they recorded a few singles in 1956, including the hit single W-P-J-L. After the group disbanded in late 1956, he continued recording and releasing records under the name Lord Luther. This was his second solo release in 1958.

When thinking of the Renaissance, one might automatically conjure up images of Da Vinci, his Vetruvian man, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. It is a period in history renowned for its surge of creativity, knowledge, and innovation in areas of art, literature, music, architecture, and science.

It is a period that is also become more and more in vogue due to its resurgence in popular culture with T.V. shows like “The Tudors”, “The Borgias”, and the upcoming “Da Vinci’s Demons”, all putting their spin to this exciting and important moment in history.

But, what is rarely captured is the true birth of this period, and the movers and shakers who brought it all to life.

Perhaps its the fact that most art historians do not even know the names of most of the incredible artisans who painstakingly brought the churches of Florence to life with incredibly illuminated manuscripts, carvings, stained glass windows, and beautifully detailed panel paintings, between the years 1300 and 1350, that truly did start it all.

This is what Sasha Suda and the curators of the Art Gallery of Ontario‘s latest exhibition, “Revealing the Early Renaissance: Stories and Secrets in Florentine Art“, aim to bring to the forefront, allowing visitors to explore the lost masterworks that truly sparked a revolution, and would change the face of history forever.

In partnership with the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the curators have painstakingly worked on this exhibition for the past 10 years, travelling far and wide to analyze and bring overseas for the first time some of the most elaborate examples of work from this period that define the breaking point from the flatness of Medieval art to a more expressive and “humanized” perspective that has come to characterize the Renaissance.

Many of these pieces have been shut away from the public for centuries, making this one of the most impressive exhibits the AGO has ever premiered, and one that is sure to capture the imagination of all those lucky enough to visit.

Sasha Suda Talks Art With Culture Minister Michael Chan

Curator Sasha Suda talks art with Michael Chan, Ontario Minister of Culture, Tourism, & Sport.  

One might, at first, be intimidated by the prestige of such an exhibit, but fear not, as this portal on the past is as much a reflection of our present day, as it is the 14th Century.

Whether or not you know a great deal about Renaissance art, the exhibition is packed full of information, from the audio guide, to the i-pads strategically placed amongst the exhibition to give you the full backstory on some of the exhibition’s most intriguing pieces. The curators have created an easy to understand story, that truly captures all the excitement and mystery of the artists and the works they created amidst the social context of Florence during this period.

God is in the Details . . .

As you first step into the gallery, it may not immediately strike you how these works differ from the Medieval illustrations and paintings you are used to, but upon closer examination, you will find how rich, textured, and full of emotion each piece truly is.

They are not works of art to be admired from afar, but works that deserve an acute eye, and a willingness to get lost in the stories being told within them.

There is a certain excitement generated as you begin to see the layers of colour, and painstakingly small brush strokes that capture the most miniscule details of hair and embroidery. While our culture might be used to multiple images rapidly flashing before our eyes (surely a luxury akin to witchcraft for the men and women of the Renaissance), one must note that the multi-faceted panels and illuminated manuscripts are akin to the cinema of the Renaissance, with all the drama, suspense, horror, and spectacle you could expect from a film of today, with even a bit of special effects here and there.

An exquisite panel painting. Blood, gore, and devotion. The piece reads almost like an expensive 14th Century comic . . .

It”s all for devotion sake, of course; used to invoke prayer, meditation, deep-thought, or contemplation. There’s definitely that sense of entertainment in the midst, often showcasing the more brutal and tumultuous moments of martyrs and Christ: Agatha with her breasts being cut off, another martyr is grilled on coals in ecstasy, and check out any crucified Christ in the mix and you’re bound to see more than your year’s worth of blood squirt (the most impressive, hands down, being Pacino Di Bonaguido’s “The Crucifixion” from 1315-1320, whose flowing blood rains on the spectators of the scene, as well as a juicy squirt from the chest for the viewer).

And while, we might cringe at the sight of this, its patrons felt the bloodshed and pain was the human aspect of their faith, and that one day perhaps, they may themselves reach divination, as did their faithful predecessors.

Getting lost in each piece, you begin to see that this society was obsessed with their idols, and their chance to be a part of them was as easy as getting a master to paint them into a panel or manuscript. In essence, it equated a wealthy merchant to the status of celebrity, having made his way onto the pages alongside the kingdom of heaven complete with Christ, the Virgin, and all the many martyrs who gave their life to the dedication of their fate.

The most entertaining example of this is the Laudario of Sant’Agnesse; an illuminated choir book commissioned by the Compagnia di Sant’Agnese, a fraternity of merchants, for use in charitable events and prayer, and who are also illustrated along the margins of the music. This remarkable collection of 24 illustrated manuscripts have been framed and reunited for the first time since the early 1800s, and will be performed by musical guests Lionheart on April 6 in the Walker Court of the AGO (click for more details).

It is amazing to think that at one time, masters like Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Michelangelo must have set their gaze on these exact works to hone their own craft, and garner inspiration to create the masterpieces of the Renaissance we marvel at today. For when staring at the suggestive expression of Bernardo Daddi’s “A Crowned Virgin Martyr” (1334-1338), a glimpse of Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”  with her mysterious stare, and face full of subtle shadows that delicately sculpt her face, can definitely be seen,  which make the exhibition all the more exciting, and relevant.

In many ways, the exhibition brings to light that not much has changed in the world of art and commerce; citing the importance of banking and the prosperous merchant class to the creation of these vital works of art. Being so wealthy, members of the merchant class became so concerned that they may not  reach heaven, that they began spending their fortunes on commissioning buildings, and filling them with new art that expressed their hopes, fears, ideals, and emotions.

With prosperity, comes art – and not much has changed today, as many of the world’s most successful artists rely on wealthy investors and corporate big wigs to the cut the cheque on a commission. Perhaps they no longer fear purgatory for their sins, but they are most definitely keeping their fingers crossed that their commission could strike them big dollars, and in that way, achieve idol status, and a bit of heaven.

The exhibition has already been lauded by the Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times as one of the most important exhibitions in recent years, so don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel through time, and take in 90 once-hidden masterworks that came to redefine life as we know it today.

Music Minute: “Dear God” – XTC (1986)

Whenever we question our own reality and or think about our New Dracula Shades, this is one of the tunes that jumps into our Head’s and gets our toe’s tappin’.  We’re lover’s of the hippie glasses and  penchant for Hats, not to mention overall gentlemanly style of this English Invasion.

Not only is the message frank, but the statements linger and in a sea of pop act’s who sing about drivel, we find it very refreshing to find a group who aren’t afraid to say how they really feel!  Especially here at The Eye of Faith, a rebellious song questioning the existence of God is right up our alley!

From Swindon, England, XTC was active between 1977 and 2005. The band enjoyed some chart success, including the UK and Canadian hits you may recall; “Making Plans for Nigel” (1979) and “Senses Working Overtime” (1982)

First coming together in 1972, the core duo of Andy Partridge (guitars & vocals) and Colin Moulding (bass & vocals) went through many band names. Possible names being The Helium Kidz and Star Park, it wasn’t until 1976 the band settled on the name XTC.

With provoking lyrics like “Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
mankind after we made you? And the Devil too!” it’s no wonder this New Wave group stirred up quite the sensation with the God fearing crowd worldwide.

“I won’t believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You’re always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it’s the same the
whole world ’round. The hurt I see helps to compound that

and if you’re up there you’d perceive that my heart’s here upon
my sleeve. If there’s one thing I don’t believe in

it’s you….”
