{DIVA WARS} Raquel Welch vs. Mae West

We’ve been getting thoroughly entertained by these “Diva on Diva” videos by Clippety on YouTube, and this one is a real interesting treat.

Two icons of sex and beauty brought together for 1970s camp classic “Myra Breckinridge” based on the controversial novel by the iconic Gore Vidal.

The film, like the novel, broke many boundaries tackling transexuality and machismo attidues in Hollywood, but was pretty much panned universally, and some consider it the worst film ever made.  But, you have to give Raquel Welch much credit for taking on such a cutting edge role, and it really makes us love her so much more!

Myra Breckenridge is the antithesis of sex symbol. She’s revolutionary; she’s a warrior.
-Raquel Welch

The themes and tone the film exhibit would never fly today, so it really is a treat to watch!

So, take a look at what Raquel Welch had to say about working with Mae West, an icon of sex from the 1930s! 40 years between their stardom, you’re only bound for a little drama!

Divas be divas . . . but they have the right, don’t they?

YOU, ME, AND ANGELYNE! L.A. ICON’S TRUE IDENTITY REVEALED!

Everyone knows Angelyne.

A staple of Los Angeles culture, and a precursor to the “famous for being famous” antics of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian; this mysterious blonde bombshell exploded in the 80s with the wish to be famous. You can’t miss her wild billboards or that sexy pink corvette. Even if you don’t know her name – you know here. Trust me. You do!

I love the term Hollyweird, and Angelyne definitely lives up to Los Angeles’ reputation for eclectic characters and unbelievable tales of transformation.

Always a lady of mystery…not much has ever been known about her; The real her, at least.

Most of the time, you can’t make up stories as intriguing and mind rousing as simply searching for the truth. That’s exactly what Gary Baum chronicles in his latest article for The Hollywood Reporter which has got the internet buzzing!

+CLICK HERE TO READ THIS AWESOME ARTICLE+

While, I feel a little sad that her mystique has been stripped away, there’s no denying that we are only going to experience an even bigger renaissance of Angelyne and all her bright pink glory.

I wonder how she feels about all this? There are many paparazzi videos of her on the internet, and she seems to hate that kind of attention. Either way, this article does not detract from her legacy as a patron saint of Hollywood….

Everything about her IS Hollywood. The dream to be a star. To be worshipped. Iconized. And of course…the fakery of it all. It’s not a bad thing. I think its empowering to be able to be whoever you want to be.

And that’s why she remains a hero to so many people. In fact, we had posted the original article on our FACEBOOK page (GIVE US A LIKE for cool stories, inspirations, and updates), and we
got a lot of response! I had promised a few people I would share this crazy documentary on Angelyne I had found while perusing the depths of Youtube, so thought why not just feature it on our site!

Angelyne definitely has a place here at The Eye of Faith. She is mysterious, enigmatic, beautiful, rebellious, independent, weird, and definitely has a singular sense of self that people would only ever even dream to attain.

Angelyne is still alive and well today and pushing her persona to the max, so do her a favour and follow her on Instagram! I was absolutely shocked at how little followers she has on there! So don’t waste the moment, people!

+FOLLOW HER HERE+

Above all else, I feel like Angelyne represents the magic of the feminine. The mystique a woman can harness and use as power in their life. From nothing to something….that’s magic, in itself.

+E.O.F. STYLE DIVINITY+ PATTI QUATRO ! ! ! PLUS {GET THE LOOK}

Patti Quatro is HOT - EOF Style Divinity

We’ve always had a thing for Patti Quatro.

The statuesque brunette of the classic Detroit girl group, The Pleasure Seekers, and sister to Suzi Quatro, Patti is a triumphant figure who put the power of beauty, style, and girl power to the forefront of our culture, and helped propelled the things we take for granted in our contemporary world.

Patti Quatro Ericson on July 25, 2011

Thank the heavens for E.O.F. correspondent John Wisnewski, who got the chance to ask this Girl Group maven some questions about her captivating life.

JOHN: What was the first band that you were in, Patti?

PATTI:First band I was in was The Pleasure Seekers, started in 1964 when I was 16 years old and Suzi was 14, in Detroit Rock City. We grew our talent jamming with all our home boys…..Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, MC5, Alice Cooper, Iggy, etc…….all honing our craft as we played the teen circuits together.

JOHN: When did you join Fanny?

PATTI: Joined Fanny in 1973 at Xmas time…….first gig was the Whiskey at which John Lennon saw our debut, and we did “Oh Darling” for him.

JOHN: Patti, Fanny paved the way for future female fronted groups-  does Fanny receive recognition for this?

PATTI: All our roots bands receive recognition constantly from magazines, interviews, fans, etc…..people who appreciate us forging the road for women.    Actually, Suzi and I started the earliest at 14 and 16 in Detroit……earliest heavy rocking all female band…1964.   Others started later, and were more soft/girly sounding.

We had that Detroit grit energy from growing up jamming with Nugent, Alice, Iggy, MC5,Seger, etc. We all paved the way…..me and my sister and our roots bands, as well as Fanny. Suzi and I and our bands were recognized in Detroit/Michigan’s Hall of Fame awards last year and the year before.

Hopefully Fanny will be at some point. But, Suzi has had more than a few honours for her contributions.

JOHN: Have yourself and Suzi Quatro ever played any live appearances together?
PATTI: We just played together when she was awarded her woman of valor award from MEOW in March….a huge conference here in austin, Tx and we played together for first time since 1990’s.

JOHN: Of all the performers and artists that you knew, were there any that you were very impressed by?

PATTI: Bob Seger — his humility, songwriting talent.

Jeff Beck — his pure joy of his instrument and support of women musicians in an era when women did not rock guitars and till today.

Jimmy Page — his enormous creativity on his instrument — pure talent.

Celebrity and Cigarettes

“Stardom can be a gilded slavery. “

-Helen Hayes.

Calling all fans of Hollywood Yesteryear! What have we got here for you, today?!

Talk about bang for your buck! Deep inside every pack of Turf Cigarettes were a pair of these collector trading cards featuring all the studios’ biggest and brightest stars of the day! Many of them are legendary to this day, and have remained icons of style, grace, talent, and ultimate stardom and celebrity. Trading cards like these were a common marketing device since the 1920s paid for by the Studios to stimulate the allure of the “star”.

What a fascinating way to market these names that include heavyweights like Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Errol Flynn, Fred Astaire, Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Gregory Peck, Frank Sinatra, Katharine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, and of course Joan Crawford. These are names we all recognize and revere for the impact they continue to make on pop culture today. They are also a constant reminder to the potential for Hollywood Glamour in us all.

Best of all, the collection of cards include names of stars we may not immediately recognize. Names like Myrna Loy, Dorothy Lamour, Christine Norden, Phyllis CalvertAnton WalbrookRhonda Fleming, and Kieron Moore, may not be immediately familiar, so lest we forget!

Makes you wonder why they don’t do things like that today! It’s the least they could do for the millions of people smoking cigarettes around the world (besides CANCER). I mean, a little novelty never hurt anybody!!!

Not sure how many stars these days would accept being thrown into a pack of cigarettes, but things were much different for the star of yesteryear and the star of today. Despite this, what stars do you think would appear in a pack of cards today?

Special thanks to Immortal Ephemera for sharing this awesome collection! Click for more.

“I see stardom very clearly as a construct that’s been created in order to sell things.”

-Julie Christie.

19th Century Tattooed Dandy- Vintage Rebel Photograph- Punk History at The Eye of Faith

“So What” it says. “Who cares?”

The reclaiming of the body by man and woman by taking ink to their skin has always been an aspect of any of our cultures. It has always been a “thing”, as one calls it, and it continues to thrive in our culture, becoming more and more popular in all of the world’s hemispheres . . .

For god sake, even young boy bands are appearing covered in tattoos (Harry Styles of “One Direction” most recently)! In fact, even neck tattoos and other extremities that could only have appeared in our grandparents most horrifying nightmares, are becoming more and more the norm, so how cool/crazy is that?

1920s Tattooed Sweetheart - Beauty is Boudnless- Vintage Style Inspiration- Rebel Society

You can find them all around the world from the streets of Brooklyn to the jungles of Papua New Guinea. The meanings are countless, and the styles evolving everyday. And with technology, and a renewed interest in sanitation, the process has become a lot cleaner, but probably not a bit less painful.

Indeed, we live in times of plenty, so let’s take a moment to look back on some of the more courageous people in the past who were not afraid of trying to make the world and more unique place that embraces our individuality and celebrates it to the highest degree.

Please enjoy this ode to some of the Tattooed Sweethearts who paved the way . . .
